season. taryn kern hits this one deep off the right. bombs away. that was stanford's third homer of the night. the cardinals would take that one 7 to 3. it's not going on. exactly. and pac 12 tournament the final one ever for softball. next week at stanford. >> that'll be fun. yeah, well thank you. thanks guys. >> next at 11, a wet weekend in the forecast for the bay area. after several days of warm weather, rain is expected to move in across the region. the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. it's been a warm start to may, but temperatures are expected to cool down as rain and wind are expected to make landfall in the coming hours. hello again! i'm crystal bailey and i'm greg lee. >> a cold front is just off the coast of the bay area. ktvu mark tamayo tracking the current conditions. mark, when should we expect that rain to start falling? >> well, the north bay, we're thinking around six in the

morning or so, but then throughout the morning hours, that rain band will gradually move to the south. this was the scene today, though it has been quite the stretch of sunny and relatively warm days, so it's going to be an abrupt change. as we mentioned, as we take this into your saturday forecast, but no longer in the 60s, 70s and the 80s, we'll barely make it up into the lower 60s for tomorrow afternoon. so there's the system on the satellite, not just talking about a few sprinkles. we could have a few heavy downpours out there. rainfall expectation is about a half an inch to possibly an inch. winds ramping up around 25 to 35 miles an hour. and we have a winter storm warning in the middle of spring for the sierra. they are going to pick up significant snowfall, possibly over a foot for the higher peaks of the sierra. so here is the satellite . and the radar. as you can see, the clouds moving in the radar is really focused up to our north, right around eureka, right around cape mendocino. but this activity is approaching the bay area. first thing tomorrow morning. so overnight there's a chance of some rainfall. but tomorrow morning the rainfall will pick up and it will gradually spread to the south

and it could be heavy at times. we'll talk more about the big change for tomorrow. then it will gradually warm things back up in the five day. we'll have the full update in just a little bit. >> all right, mark, see you soon. a reminder that you can track this weekend's weather by downloading the ktvu weather app. there you'll find an interactive radar and hourly forecast. that app is free to download. this weekend's rain. not the only thing having an impact on weekend travel plans today, a tense standoff near fairfield shut down all lanes of interstate 80 for several hours. the suspect, allegedly involved in a freeway shooting earlier in the day, hospitalized tonight by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. ktvu zac sos was in fairfield tonight speaking with drivers who were stuck in that traffic for hours during this confrontation between the suspect and law enforcement. >> the swat teams are going through options that they have right now to try to get the individual to surrender his weapon and ultimately surrender. a chopper overhead on i-80 in fairfield friday amid an hours long standoff between a potentially armed suspect and

law enforcement. >> the highway temporarily shut down in both directions just after 330 in the afternoon. >> what you're seeing is the solano county sheriff's office and the fairfield police department are utilizing their armored vehicles. >> two hours later, the suspect rushed to the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> the swat teams did utilize, gas. they did utilize some less lethal options to try to get him to surrender. >> chp officers began pursuing the suspect just after 11 in the morning, when a call came in about a freeway shooting on southbound 101 and santa rosa. no one was hurt, but officers were able to track down the suspect's license plate to a silver toyota corolla and a rohnert park shopping center. officers pursuing the car onto the highway. >> one of the agencies involved, at some point along the way, was able to successfully deploy a spike strip, which ended up flattening 1 or 2 of the tires.

so it appears that eventually he he understood he wasn't able to go any further and just chose to stop where he is. >> amid the standoff, traffic was backed up for miles filled with commuters and travelers heading out of town for the weekend. >> we've been on the road from three hours for three hours from san jose. we're just trying to get to davis. >> brian baer caught up in the standstill while trying to get to a funeral with his family. >> went up a few miles that way, but it was all crowded there. so we finally listened to a traffic report, which then said there was some standoff up at cordelia. so we decided to reverse and start going a different direction and see if we could go around. >> michelle just trying to get home from work. >> i'm just sitting here waiting for him to open them because i live in fairfield. got to go on 80 to get to fairfield. i had things i needed to do tonight, but you know, what are you going to do? >> understanding about the delays given the challenging situation officers faced? >> citizen safety is first. absolutely. >> as for the investigation into all of this that has been turned over to the solano county da's office in fairfield, zac sos,

ktvu fox two news. >> new at 11. the drug maker amneal pharmaceuticals has agreed to pay $273 million to settle claims it helped fuel the country's opioid epidemic. the attorneys general in more than a dozen states, including california, accused the company of failing to monitor and report suspicious opioid orders. if a judge approves a settlement, amneal will pay more than $90 million and supply $180 million worth of opioid overdose reversal products such as narcan. amneal is the same company california is partnering with to produce the opioid overdose reversal drug, not naloxone. governor newsom announced the partnership earlier this week. and police in san francisco arrested a woman in for running an illegal gambling operation. the 45 year old woman from oakland is accused of running her operation on ellis street, near larkin street in the tenderloin district. police say officers

made the arrest yesterday and located and seized more than a dozen illegal gambling machines, a loaded firearm, cash and drugs at the address. she was booked into the san francisco county jail on multiple felony charges. >> a postal worker was robbed while on duty in oakland. it happened around 1230 yesterday afternoon in the city's adams point neighborhood. the worker was leaving an apartment when an unknown man jumped out and stole her postal keys. a postal inspector says it's likely the robber had been tracking the carrier's movements. >> this is somebody who knew what he was looking for, set up, targeted the carrier, set up to give himself the best chance of. of getting away. >> this latest holdup happened exactly two months after another carrier was robbed. just blocks away. >> and in oakland, fire officials say they are now investigating a november fire at horn barbecue as arson. the popular restaurant reopened at a different oakland location last week after a fire shut it down for more than six months. the building was deemed unsafe to

use following the fire and closed off because of the damage. now, firefighters say evidence found at the scene has revealed someone may have set the fire intentionally. the owner, matt horn, says the restaurant was defaced and vandalized the day before it burned down. >> a heckler clashed with protesters at stanford tonight in a heated exchange. the man could be seen shouting at the group and pushing a student outside a pro-palestinian prayer vigil. this is protests at colleges around the country have turned violent in recent days. ktvu joey horta has what the university and protesters are saying tonight. >> get off of me! >> a counter-protest shows up to a pro-palestine prayer vigil during a protest at stanford on friday night, and is caught on cell phone video shouting and pushing a protester. he is then seen resisting law enforcement commands at his escorted away with the help of campus security, before talking to ktvu. >> i said to them, they came and put me in cuffs. >> the heckler is then put into

a patrol car and take it away, leaving protesters frustrated. >> we can't even grieve peacefully. >> the group that includes students and professors have been camping out at white plaza for over a week at are concerned about their safety. >> people keep shouting at us and people take pictures of us trying to dox us. and of course, i don't feel safe. >> social media is abuzz with images of an unknown person on campus this week wearing what's described by stanford as a hamas headband. the university contacted the fbi after seeing the photos. a spokesperson for the university saying, we find this deeply disturbing as hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the u.s. government, not justifying it. >> i'm saying that it's not us. we don't even agree with it. >> dozens of tents are set up at stanford university's white plaza, where pro-palestine demonstrators are calling for the university to cut ties with companies supporting israel's war against hamas. >> a palestinian life is also worth the same value as any

other life on earth. >> the university encourages peaceful expression of free speech, but is aware of campus outsiders taking part in the protest who could face arrest? according to the university, overnight camping is not allowed on white plaza and those students could be disciplined. right now, it's unclear if this man is a student here at stanford or if he was detained or arrested at stanford, joey jordan, ktvu, fox two news. >> more than 2400 people have been arrested during recent demonstrations on college campuses across the country. while some of the protests have ended, many continue. the university of vermont announced the u.s. ambassador to the united nations would no longer be giving an address to graduates later this month. the protesters wanted ambassador linda thomas-greenfield removed from the ceremony because of her role in the u.s. vetoes of multiple un ceasefire resolutions, as.

911. call came in at 330 yesterday afternoon. fire crews found the girl's father giving cpr when they arrived. the twin girls were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. >> kids under the age of five are our most vulnerable, but we do have people drowning of all ages, and so we want to make sure that we're setting them up for a lifetime of safety around water. >> water safety experts recommend having adult supervision when children are in the pool. they also recommend a pool fence, life vests and swimming lessons. >> in hawaii. maui county is filing a lawsuit against major cellular carriers over the deadly wildfires last august. the county is suing verizon, t-mobile, spectrum and at&t. it says the company has failed to

properly inform police of widespread service outages during the fires. the county says if it had known, it would have used other methods to get an evacuation effort out to people. in lahaina, 101 people were killed in those fires in southern california, public health emergency has been declared in long beach because of a localized tuberculosis outbreak. >> health officials say at least ten residents of a hotel in the city have been infected, and one person has died and nine others have been hospitalized. 170 people who may have been exposed are being screened. health officials say declaring a public health emergency will streamline the health department's ability to secure resources for screening and potential treatment. tb is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs. it spreads from one person to another in the air as an infected person coughs or speaks. if left untreated, it can be fatal and you can hear about the west coast's top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday through friday, or find around

the clock coverage at west coast rap.com in san francisco, pier 39 and fisherman's wharf is seeing a historic number of sea lions. >> it comes 35 years after these marine mammals first made their appearance along the city's waterfront. >> as ktvu tom baker shows us, the influx of these animals is bringing in crowds from across the world. >> it's one of pier 39 largest sea lion gatherings, and just in time, they first showed up after the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, drawing enough people then to save the fisherman's wharf area from the post-quake recession. they're doing the very same thing now post pandemic. >> oh, just look at the crowds that are here today. it's been like this for days now since the news got out that we now have this incredible resurgence. >> unlike seals, sea lions have plainly visible external ear flaps. experts say they're here because their favorite food, anchovies, are plentiful, right

states conference of mayors in the united states capitol. there they met with housing and urban development officials to address housing and homeless issues. during her trip, mayor tao says one of her top priorities was to secure more hud housing vouchers, also known as section eight vouchers for the city of oakland. these vouchers provide rental assistance to eligible households, allowing them to afford housing on a private market. small business owners in california are seeing a rise in operating costs. goldman sachs recently surveyed 10,000

business owners throughout california. the investment bank survey found 46% of small businesses say they have had to raise their prices in the last three months, 73% of owners say inflation has added pressure to their business. despite these costs and pressures, 63% of owners say their business is growing at or above pre-pandemic levels. >> one of the nation's largest cybersecurity conferences is coming to san francisco next week. i and its risks are expected to be the main topic of discussion. we spoke with mickey boland, who is attending the conference with the redwood city based cybersecurity platform about tech companies response to ai risks. >> these companies are completely unprepared. they really are unprepared. they're not understanding the risk to their business, the harms that can be created. and then they i think they're in denial in some sense of how sophisticated and good this technology is.

>> the rsa conference will wrap up on thursday, may 9th. >> due to this saturday's forecasted rain, the 39th annual cinco de mayo celebration in downtown hayward has been postponed. the event is now scheduled for saturday, september 14th, where there will hopefully still be the same festive offerings like performances from local groups and various mariachi bands. and for more on these rainy conditions expected over the weekend, we're going to hear from meteorologist mark tamayo. >> yeah, that's the biggest challenge with these systems that come in, come in in may because we always, always have like these big events and just the outdoor baseball games, softball games, stuff like that. and unfortunately the rainfall will be getting in the way for tomorrow. take a look at the highs from today. those a beautiful sunny day. some patchy fog though. redeveloping near portions of the coastline and another warm day. 60s and 70s a sharp drop off in those numbers for your for your saturday. so lots of cloud cover tomorrow morning and the rainfall picks up. could be heavy at times and afternoon highs struggling to make it to the 60 degree mark.

sunday should be dry with partly sunny skies. so that's the headline. tomorrow though, the rainfall develops first thing tomorrow morning and in the sierra this will be a snow producer with 6 to 18in of snow for the higher peaks and snow levels coming down, starting out around 7000ft, coming down to around 6000ft. so the winter storm warning this begins 11 a.m. saturday until 8 a.m. on sunday, and snowfall projections , those numbers really going up, possibly over a foot right now, the satellite and the radar, you can't see a lot of activity up to our north in terms of rainfall right around eureka, right around cape mendocino. and this on track to approach the bay area overnight here is our live camera looking out toward sfo where we have the cloud cover. it looks like some lower clouds back in the picture. we're going to bring in all the cloud cover over the next few hours. so tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies. and here is the saturday rain timeline. as you can see things picking up, especially by mid-morning into the early portion of the afternoon. and then by 4:00 we could probably scale back on the activity. so the bulk of the

activity coming in late morning and into the early afternoon. rain develops. so tomorrow morning, overnight temperatures in the 40s and the 50s, this area of high pressure, this was the source of the warm weather today it's moving on out of town as this cold front moves in this will bring in the cloud cover and the rainfall first thing tomorrow morning. here's the forecast model 7:00. you'll notice this is 10:00 tomorrow morning. there's the chance we could have a few isolated thunderstorms with this pattern setting up. and then into the afternoon hours. some breaks in the activity might have a chance to get outside tomorrow afternoon for your saturday and sunday. probably just a sun cloud mix. highs for tomorrow will be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. you will definitely notice that cooldown in your saturday forecast on sunday. partly sunny skies and a bit of a warming trend back to a springtime weather by tuesday and wednesday of next week. >> mark. thank you all. prepare for getting my umbrella for this weekend. now britney spears and her boyfriend paul solis allegedly got into a fight at a los angeles hotel this week, and now tmz sources say there is

oakland and san francisco hosted a prom for their teen patients. ktvu amberleigh shows us how the hospital is making everyone feel special at this one of a kind prom. >> say cheese a night to make milestone memories for young patients at benioff children's hospital oakland. this is the 2024 prom. >> i'm 20 years old. my senior prom. i did not get to attend because i was in the hospital and i was really upset. >> janiya smith tells me she suffers from sickle cell anemia. she has been in and out of the hospital during the past year, coping with the disease that gives her chronic pain. it's honestly a wonderful feeling, like i just love getting dressed, getting all dolled up. >> it helps me especially like it's a good distraction for when you're in pain to like when you look better. you also feel

better. >> the event is more than a prom professional stylist volunteered their talents to perform makeup magic from patient to princess, out of their hospital beds and into a pop up salon. >> it's a lot less stressful, like down here with like, a bunch of just people who aren't all like doctors. and also it's like i'm going to be able to hang out with other people who are here. >> patients say the pain and fear that comes with coping with their conditions are tempered by the joy of preparing for and attending a prom with others who share a similar experience. >> it means a lot to me right now because it's made me feel better, and i've been feeling really bad all week. >> the princess project donated dresses and the patients get to keep them. one teen tells me her illness has caused her to miss going to school, and that it's difficult to make friends, have fun, and i guess live like a normal person. the prom and all that comes with it was free. janiya offers words of encouragement. >> just stay strong and know that you got it and it's going

to be tough, but you'll get through it. >> the patients tell me this is a night they'll cherish for a long time. organizers say this prom is made possible with the help of donations and the work of volunteers at benioff children's hospital, oakland. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> oracle park will be rocking tomorrow with the patter of over 500 pairs of feet. it's called the big climb. more than 500 people will power up some 1700 steps at the giants ball park, all to raise money and awareness for the leukemia and lymphoma society. >> the money goes to research, which is lifesaving. clearly, new treatments are happening, but cures are happening, which is really exciting. the other really important thing the money does is it helps patients right here in the bay area. so we take care of patients and their families with financial assistance with education about their diseases. even nutrition help. >> the goal is to raise $450,000 to stomp out blood cancers.
