pro-palestinian mural is vandalized once again. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730, and the artist says this is the sixth time that this mural in san francisco has been altered. >> good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes, and i'll start with that mural in the noe valley neighborhood. each time the artist says he cleans it up and repaints it. our crystal bailey is here now with more on what's being done about it. crystal. well heather, the latest incident happened just yesterday. >> and today the muralist tells us his work has been vandalized so many times. security cameras had to be installed. it's just another occasion that shows how the war across the globe is contributing to tensions here at home. muralist and cultural activist chris gazzaley says he painted his pro-palestinian mural on his friend's building in noe valley about five months ago. >> it was painted to raise awareness about what's happening. i put up the names of the companies that are profiteering from this, from the war on gaza, he says. >> the mural stands as a

reminder of the families who have been killed in gaza on monday, after the sixth time it's been vandalized. he's covering a swear word with a sticker and sharing his disappointment. >> yeah, it hurts like to see it get vandalized, but it's nothing compared to the pain that my people are going through in gaza. >> it's happened so many times. security cameras were installed this time they caught the person in the act. this video showing what appears to be a woman writing over the mural. it's really in san francisco is the worst. >> it's disgusting. the scribble says, bring back our hostages. >> i was just sitting on my break and i saw a woman come by with a sharpie, and she was writing, and i wasn't sure if she was part of the team or i didn't know she destroyed it, you know, without any hesitation, in broad daylight, gosar says the incidents have been reported to police. >> meanwhile, people in the community say they are not surprised. >> we're so divided over here. who the #### are we to tell other people? you know, get it together? >> polarization is well baked in

at this point and things like this are only going to exacerbate it. >> it's just been kind of interesting to see, yeah, how much people have in common. but then when it comes to this issue, there's such a huge divide. >> and while some folks disagree on the message of the mural, i myself, if i were completely say pro what that message is, i still might not put it up. most everyone agrees vandalism is not the answer. >> i like to leave art the way it is, because everyone's trying to save their own thing. >> there's got to be like open conversation. and i think it's just a shame to see, those things done in this way. >> i'm against anybody doing wrong to anybody. >> and the artist says that he thinks each time the mural was vandalized, it was done by a different person, but he plans to repaint next week. >> yeah. as we've been finding out over the last couple of months, crystal, there is just a complicated mix of emotions surrounding the israel-hamas war, and those emotions really are driving, you know, the

behavior of similar to what we're seeing. >> that's right. and people in the community think that this vandalism is going to continue specifically on this mural, as long as the conflict in the middle east continues. >> yeah, because it is what's driving those emotions that i was talking about. crystal bailey thank you. free, free free palestine. >> free palestine. >> well, hundreds of protesters filled malcolm x plaza on the san francisco state university campus today, students calling for an end to the war in gaza, as well as for the university to divest from companies doing business with israel. those students moved from the plaza to a nearby grassy area, where they started an encampment, joining those on other campuses, including stanford and uc berkeley. here in the bay area, media representatives for the protesters say the encampment will send a message to school administrators. >> was mainly the divestment that we're concerned about is the divestment on the behalf of the california state university system from the israeli military

. >> the university issued a statement saying it respects the rights of community members to protest while preserving a safe campus environment. pro-palestinian protesters at sonoma state university also show no signs of leaving, and encampment was set up there on friday and more people joined over the weekend. this group also calling for a ceasefire in gaza and that the university divest from companies supporting israel. the university released a statement saying that it's primarily concerned with the safety of its students, faculty, staff and visitors. it also says it supports the right to free expression. earlier today on the four, we spoke with political science professor lisa mueller, who said that her research shows that peaceful protests are more likely to win public support. >> it's one thing to block a road or or set up an encampment, and it's another to physically harm other people. and based on the social science that we have so far, when protesters initiate actual violence, this almost

always backfires on them. whereas when they experience violent repression, this can turn public opinion in their favor. >> mueller said that institutions can be seen as repressing students rights when they crack down on peaceful protests. and be sure to stay with us right here on ktvu for continuing coverage of the war in gaza. we are staying on top of the reaction to the conflict from all communities here in the bay area. well, when it comes to the drug crisis in san francisco, officers say their latest crackdown in the tenderloin is bearing results. police say a one day operation resulted in 60 arrests, two illegal guns seized and 260g of narcotics taken off the streets. the operation, which happened on wednesday, is part of a year long effort by police to dismantle the drug trade in the tenderloin and south of market neighborhoods, authorities say just since last may, they have made more than 3000 arrests for drug activity. well, california is purchasing its own opioid

overdose reversal drug. it is a lower price generic version of narcan. the state is buying the drug called naloxone, from a new jersey based pharmaceutical company, for about 40% below the market rate. the reversal drug will eventually be available under the state's cash for rx program. state health officials say it will be given to first responders, university and community organizations at no cost. >> incredible impact that this drug can have at saving people's lives. how easy it is to use, how important it is to make it widely available. so we have it as a tool to save lives everywhere in our state. >> for more on the impact of this purchasing agreement earlier today on the four, we spoke with michael michael snow from the group hep pac, the hiv education and prevention project of alameda county, with more access to the actual medication in more persons knowing how to

a gun onto campus, the district says. a student at bethel high school was in possession of a gun. staff members were able to confiscate the weapon and the student left campus. no one was hurt and police are now searching for that student. bethel high and neighboring wardlaw elementary were placed on lockdown as a precaution, and students were dismissed at their normal times. the san jose police officers association is calling on the department now to increase the mayor's security detail after his bodyguard was attacked while the mayor was doing an interview. >> i believe having another second set of eyes, second set of hands there, maybe they could have done some different tactics

health care provider says that online tools that were installed on its websites and mobile apps were involved. kaiser says about 13.4 million people will get a notification. kaiser says it is not aware of any misuse of any personal information. earlier today on the four slashnet ceo patrick carr told us that kaiser members should change their passwords. >> we use what's called multi-factor authentication on those passwords. you receive that one time code on your text message to identify who you are, use that, that, that really ensures that your accessing your applications, your information, so someone else cannot access it . >> kaiser says patients names indications that they were signed into a kaiser account and their health related searches were involved in this breach. but no usernames, passwords, social security numbers or financial account information was involved. new at 730 tonight, planning has resumed on a major renovation of part of

terminal three at sfo. it was a project that was delayed at the start of the pandemic back in 2020. the san francisco airport commission has reauthorized funding now for the project to renovate the western portion of terminal three, which is home to united airlines. the project will renovate and expand gate eas, provide seismic retrofitting, add international capability to more gates, and also improve concessions. the airport confirms construction will begin in july. work is expected to be finished in 2028. avello airlines is celebrating its third anniversary in the skies. the low fare airline began operations three years ago today, flying between burbank and santa rosa. the airline's main base of operations has been in burbank ever since, but on wednesday, avello will open a crew base in santa rosa, employing 50 crew members locally. this week, avello will begin flights from san jose to boise. carlos montana, salem, oregon and tri-cities, washington. that's in addition

to those existing flights to burbank, las vegas and palm springs. okay we started off our workweek with a really nice monday, although a bit windy out there. rosemary. >> yes, the winds are beginning to die down, but we'll be on and off over the next few days. our pattern isn't changing a whole lot. enjoyable temperatures though. we have some nice weather out there across the bay area. temperatures are beginning to cool as the sun is setting, giving you a live look here at san francisco, and you can kind of see how the sun is coming in from an angle and bouncing off the buildings there. the storm tracker two here with you, showing you the pattern that is in place. the pattern that is expected to continue. we have areas of the pacific northwest with wet weather, snow in the cascades moving into idaho, montana and then sinking in to the intermountain west. california is dry, at least for now, as well as the desert southwest. moving in closer, though, what we do have is that northwest flow and the gradient tightens at times due to the storms that are to the north of

us. and as we talked about a little breezy and windy this afternoon, likely to see the winds kick up a little bit again tomorrow. but right now, fairfield reporting 15mph. it is a little windier along the peninsula and areas like sfo still reporting a very strong gust at 41mph in san jose, the airport there reporting a gust to 32 into tonight and through tomorrow, the systems continue to just ride through the pacific northwest. and then on the backside of california, we continue in the northwest flow until we get to friday. things start to get a little bit more interesting as the storm seems to break down the ridge. the high pressure kind of scoots west and we have a system that drops in in time. right now it looks like for saturday, and as i roll you through the back end of the weekend into sunday now we still have the possibility of scattered showers. all the models are not agreeing on this and this is going to change. we still have several days to go, but right now we may have a little bit of wet weather on the weekend. if you do have plans, something to consider. right now it's very bullish showing us an

for $360 billion bond measure for the november ballot. now the bond was spent $167 billion to help finance improvements to zuckerberg san francisco general hospital laguna honda and the chinatown health clinic. it would also include $50 million to increase the number of shelter beds and transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness. $70 million for street safety and repaving and $25 million to renovate harvey milk plaza in the castro and hallidie plaza near the paypal bart station. the proposal needs approval from the board of supervisors to put it on the november ballot. the mayor is expected to formally introduce this at tomorrow afternoon's meeting. the salvation army is preparing to renovate and expand its san jose campus to try to help provide more housing to those in need. 74 temporary units will be available to house the existing

residents of the salvation army's emmanuel house, which will be redeveloped and remodeled. it will also include another new housing complex on the campus to help address the housing crisis in santa clara county. >> i think it's really beautiful that we'll see all the different pieces coming together. the long term vision has that interim housing overnight shelter as well as permanent housing as part of the vision. so we're seeing all these pieces come together and allowing someone to come directly in from an encampment to be stabilized, connected to services, and then on the pathway to something more permanent. >> the project will take ten years to complete. santa clara county is providing $4 million to help pay for the project. the san jose city council is set to vote on a proposal in june to commit $1 million for it. rite aid has confirmed that three of its bay area stores will be closing. the three stores are the san jose location near story road and white road, the location in union city and the union square marketplace, and
