this news 11. >> good friday evening. thanks for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 11. i'm noelle bellow. our top story tonight, a rare one rain in may. it seems like winter not completely done with us just yet here in the bay area. kron four's lawrence karnow here. he's been tracking this storm since early this week, actually since like last week you are saying we might get this storm and it has come together, lawrence. yeah, you know, we have some rain in may. that's not that unusual. but >> boy, the fact that this is going to be such an intense storm that is very unusual.

and it's coming with a lot of cold air. so we've got the clouds gathering already outside. tonight, we saw that fog push in as we started to see that ramp up and head of the cold front that we've got that storm system that's now bearing down on the bay area. some clouds already beginning to move in across the bay area. and much of northern california starting to see a couple raindrops moving in as well. see that right there. some showers already beginning to move in the far northern california. you can see where that storm is coming from, right from the gulf of alaska. that means this is going to be a cold system dropping in the bay area, unusually cold for this time of year. and of course, this week we've been basking in temperatures in the 70's and the 80's. it's been beautiful all around the bay area tomorrow. we're going to be lucky to get out the 50's and a good part of the bay area, too. all right. here's the latest on the forecast model. you can see that storm system rolling down about 7 o'clock in the morning rolling into the north bay, some moderate some heavy amounts of rainfall by 9 o'clock or so stretching across the central bay, bringing more rain and then on and off as we head to the middle of the morning by

the afternoon, it tapers off. but we're going to see more than an inch of rain in parts of the bay area and hopefully drying out after that. well, back to you, lawrence. thank you to a big story now we've been following all this evening. a freeway shooting suspect is dead and interstate 80 back open after an hours-long shutdown due to a standoff kron four's. dan thorn reports. >> it was an absolute traffic nightmare for thousands of bay area drivers along i-80 as well as a heart pounding situation for officers dealing with this standoff. and police say it all started as a chase with the shooting suspect. traffic is once again moving on. i-80 in fairfield friday night. both directions were shut down for hours as police faced off with the driver of this silver toyota corolla, chp says the suspect was wanted in connection with a southbound lanes of highway e 101, near windsor friday morning. chp says a black suv was shot, but no one was

injured. the suspect was later spotted around 03:00pm in rohnert park and led police on a chase on the highway. 37, then back to 101, southbound. and then across the richmond, sandra fell bridge. the driver then took off and 80 eastbound in came to a stop at the core. delia junction in the area of green valley road and 6.80, after his tires were blown out by spike strips. chp solano county deputies and fairfield police surrounded and approached the suspect after an hours long standoff at 06:45pm. chp says the situation was resolved. chp has confirmed that the suspect has died. and initial report was that it was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the solano county district attorney's office is now handling the investigation in fairfield, dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> we do actually have an update and we just got word a minute ago that that suspect

is actually still alive and in critical condition. they have not been told what hospital the suspect is out, the suspect is alive still in critical condition. that's the latest from chp. and we'll continue to update you online and on air tomorrow morning during kron, 4 at 7. san jose police officers continue to get shot at at an alarming rate. the latest incident happening just last night when 2 officers were shot by a suspect at a hotel. police say this man, kevin briones shot them at the extended stay. america hotel in south san jose near 101, a woman with a restraining order against briones called police when she realized he was outside of her hotel room, her children ages 8, 10 15 were also in that room. >> what we had was an armed, dangerous felon showing up in the middle of the night at a hotel room where domestic violence survivor and her 3

children were with a with a pistol. the second officer immediately pulled the more seriously injured officer to safety and immediately began assessing him for injuries. want to apply a tourniquet before he even realized that he himself had been shot. last night's events offer a stark reminder of the solemn oath they take to protect and serve our city. >> and the immense personal risk, they assume as they carry out their jobs each day. >> one officer was released from the hospital today. the other is in critical condition. at least one of those officers fired shots back at briones who is now in police custody at the hospital. the woman and her children were not hurt, according to police, 12 officers have been shot at in san jose in the last 15 months. following that shooting, residents were told to shelter in place. one neighbor describes what happened. >> all of a sudden about 2 later. >> and it was a cop him like what's going on their video,

like everybody's mind. what's going on? shelter-in-place looking door, stay down into the low as you can. all i could see was blood and blast outside the room. so i don't know if it was in the room or in the hallway. >> that shelter in place lasted about 90 minutes. of course, stick with kron. 4 on air and online for all of the latest breaking news. be sure to download the free kron 4 app. you can get push alerts sent directly to your phone. when news breaks. city and county of san francisco now accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay. the environmental protection agency filed a federal complaint against san francisco yesterday alleging the city has dumped more than 1.8 billion gallons of sewage into creeks, the bay and the pacific ocean. so which contains diseases like e-coli, which can cause severe illness. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with water, recreation activities and protecting aquatic life. 4

people have been arrested and thousands of dollars worth of stolen property have been recovered insan ancisco on wednesday. officers responded to reports of a car burglary near steiner and grove streets right by alamo square. police tracked down a car with 4 suspects inside following a brief chase. all 4 men were arrested. officers found a gun and thousands of dollars worth of stolen property including camera equipment inside the car. the men face charges, including burglary carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a loaded gun with the intention of committing a felony. some faculty members in new at u c berkeley are officially supporting the students protesting the war in gaza. in a statement from the board of berkeley's faculty association, they're condemning any violence towards the protesters say protesting is a basic human right. student encampments have been up since last monday. they're negotiating with school officials. but so far no agreement has been made to end that occupation on campus. 22 year-old man

arrested in rohnert park after police say he hit a minor while they were crossing the street and then drove off. happened around 8.30, this morning outside or lane near rancho cotati high school. police say they were able to find that suspect with video recorded by a witness. officers have identified him as angel martinez. he's now facing several felony charges. the victim is expected to be okay. cinco de mayo preparations in san jose are all squared away with a parade low-rider cars and live music all planned for this weekend. this year celebration is nearly a year in the making as the low rider council of san jose worked with the city to make things safe and seamless kron. 4 s jack moment reports from downtown san jose. well, it's a isn't even in till sunday, but already preparations are underway. as you can see behind me, there's a road closure set up right here on santa clara street. that's for a car show that starts at 09:00am saturday at

>> welcome back. a man in hayward arrested after investigators say he shot a man and then buried the body. witnesses say that shooting happened one week ago on april. 26 near san antonio and heyman streets. but those witnesses didn't report the shooting until 2 days later, an initial search of the area from police came up empty. then this tuesday, the suspected shooter was seen riding an atv near the train tracks on tennyson road and love big court. police say they tried to stop him but he would them on a chase to a home near lassen and chance streets. are you one inside a garage and barricaded himself? they say after hours of negotiation, andres sanchez peacefully surrendered and was taken into custody. that same day investigators went back to thooting location. they found the victim's body covered with dirt and debris. the victim's identity has not been released. sanchez is facing multiple charges including murder. it's a story you'll only see right here on kron 4, a mcdonald's in

oakland has been shut down by the alameda health department after workers allege a rat infestation. kron 4 was in the parking lot of the mcdonald's located at 13, 30 jackson street in oakland today when a health department employee started turning customers inside and in the drive-thru away from the restaurant, we asked what was the cause of the store closure and this was the response. >> from the health department, they have some sanitation the season. they need to clean up. what did you find you mind telling >> this all comes as 6 mcdonald's employees are actively on strike from the location due to what they say are unhealthy, working conditions. take a look at this video captured inside the restaurant by a worker where you can see a live rat sitting on the counter and eating something the mcdonald's employees say they found rat eating food prepared for the customers. the workers have now filed a formal complaint

to cal osha with the help from the california fast food workers union. when i saw that he is i was his is disgusting. >> and so this is problem not just the employees working on these conditions, but also for coastal the communities affected. >> today, we also spoke with the alameda county health department about the concerns we were told the location did receive an annual inspection back in february and that no violations were found. once we shared some of the allegations made by employees, the department said they would be sending an inspector by to investigate. and of course, that is what we saw today. we did reach out to mcdonald's earlier before the store closure. they sent us this statement from the owner and operator joseph wong. it reads in part, quote, it's important employees have a safe place to come work. when we became aware of the issue, we immediately contacted pest control and continue to work with them to address this. the

fire that destroyed the famed horn barbecue restaurant in oakland is now being investigated as an arson. the fire happened just a few days before thanksgiving last year. so look at the aftermath of the restaurant. since then owner matt horne has maintained his restaurant was targeted by arson. and today officials confirmed that saying it was deliberately deliberately set. no word tonight on a suspect horn. barbecue did reopen last week as part of horns. other restaurant matty's old-fashioned located in downtown oakland. let's get check of the forecast safe. heard some people had wanted to barbecue this weekend. tomorrow is probably not the day to do it. this is a live look at sfo tonight wheryou can see it is. >> really gotten misty and foggy out there. lawrence karnow here with more on the timing of this storm coming through. yeah, you know, barbecue you can walk rate that thing up and keep warm and that's a big change.

there's going to be in the temperatures outside. >> it is going to be unusually cool throughout the entire weekend. but rain is on the way. looks like it is on now on final approach will be here within the next 5 to 6 hours least in the north bay. and that start to stretch across the rest of the bay area. but fog has moved in now. tonight, a sign of changes are on the way and you see front off the coastline coming around gulf of alaska, unusually strong storm for this time of year to be bearing down on the bay area. but here we go. it is coming with those cold temperatures. let's time it out for you as we head through the night tonight. tomorrow morning. there you are. just around 8 o'clock in the morning. you see the heavier amounts of rain moving in the north bay, in the yellow, in the orange pockets of moderate to heavy rain, then sliding further south as we head toward about 10 o'clock or so winds gusting along the coastline, maybe some 30 plus mile hour gust along the coast as we head toward the middle of the day, the heaviest rain will be located in the south bay as we head toward the middle of the day. and then by the afternoon, we start to get on the backside of the front and then maybe some partial clearing and some scattered showers, maybe an isolated thunderstorm. but rainfall

totals going to be impressive. some places, maybe upwards of an inch of rain, especially over the coastal range, maybe twice the normal amount of rain for the entire month. and one storm in may. all right. well, they've got some winter weather advisories to deal with. 2 lot of snow in the high country. and so we've got winter storm warnings up there. they could see upwards of a foot foot and a half, maybe 2 feet of snow across the highest peaks. temperatures. they're going to be a major story to this weekend. you got that rain tomorrow. 50's in the san francisco long gone are those temperatures in the 70's and 80's temperatures running well below the average for this time of year may be about 57 degrees in redwood city for the southwest. temperatures hovering in the 50's tomorrow maybe we squeak out a low 16. that's about it. you can see some of the blue our computer models picking up even colder temperatures over the mountain tops only in the 40's for highs in may. that is extremely cold. in fact, as we get in toward looks like sunday morning could actually see some overnight lows in the 30's that is very, very cool. all right. couple days, here we go. we keep things way down tomorrow. we've got that rain. a cool day on sunday, but

mostly dry. then we start to warm up next week back in the 70's and the 80's by the middle of the week. that's what we like to outside just a little closer over the next couple days. it's going to be chilly. yeah. hopefully this helps us fire season now and all this rain, this is beneficial rain. that's for sure things aren't they? >> driverless cars are coming to the peninsula waymo now it plans to expand its services south to sunnyvale. the california public utilities commission approved the expansion back in january. the pilot program will only be available to waymo employees at first who will be able to order writer only trips anywhere from san francisco down to san mateo and burlingame. this weekend, a street fair in oakland to celebrate asian american and pacific islander heritage month. the today fair starts at 10. 45 on 10th street in oakland's chinatown near madison and jackson streets about 2 blocks from the lake merritt bart station. there will be a bunch of local vendors and lying and dancers
