>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. thanks so much for joining us on kron. 4 news at 6. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. that breaking news is in the north bay tonight where interstate 80 is a mess shut down in both directions in fairfield because of a standoff. >> with someone who police believe is arms, police think the suspect was involved in the shooting earlier on want. yes, he hp says it all started on southbound at 101 near

windsor. and then about 3 o'clock. this afternoon, the car was spotted in rohnert park. >> and that's when police chased the driver to the area near the richmond. sandra fell bridge. the suspect eventually led officers eastbound on 80 toward fairfield, which is where the standoff began. and here's a look at some citizen app video. >> of the scene. this is from a short time ago. they have a couple bear cats there. the armored vehicles trying to get as close as they can trying to andathe situation as quickly as they can because interstate 80 being shut down in both directions is always troublesome, especially though on a friday with so many people trying to get around. the chp has issued a severe traffic alert because of this standoff on 80. this is right where interstate 80 intersects with 6.80, in fairfield again, all lanes in both directions are currently blocked. yeah, people are just stuck. so here's a look at how traffic is fairing in that area right now. a lot of red.

>> drivers are advised to expect to use alternate routes and really, you just want to avoid this area. there's no estimated time for reopening the roadway. we do have a heading to the scene. we're going to update you as soon as we learn more. in other news tonight, a san jose police are sharing more information, including the name of the man who shot 2 officers late last night. he's been identified as 33 year-old kevin briones. the shooting happened around 10, 30 last night. >> at the extended stay, america hotel on sending not avenue in san jose. the city's police chief says at least one of the officers returned fire on briones. chris rob nesbitt joins us now live from outside the police department with the latest. rob, what are you finding out? >> vicki and grant, according to police, a woman with the restraining order against briones called 9-1-1 when she found out briones was outside her hotel room. the 33

year-old fired shots at 2 responding officers. >> this was the scene outside of san jose extended stay america hotel thursday night when police say 33 year-old kevin briones shot 2 police officers according to chief paul joseph, a woman at the hotel called police after breonna's knocked on her hotel door. her children ages 8, 10 15 were also in the hotel room. >> what we had was an armed, dangerous felon showing up in the middle of the night at the hotel room where domestic violence survivor and her 3 children were with a with a pistol chief. joseph says the woman had a restraining order against briones and he was on probation with 2 felony warrants out for his arrest. 2 responding officers had an exchange with briones at the hotel. >> one with one euro police experience and the other with 3. this is body camera footage from their exchange when chief joseph says briones pulled a gun from his duffel bag and shot both officers. the second officer immediately pulled. >> the more seriously injured officer to safety immediately began assessing him for

injuries when to apply a tourniquet before he even realized that he himself had been shot. at least one of the officers fired shots of briones who ran down the hotel hallway and jumped out of a 3rd floor window. >> he was found by officers hiding in bushes outside the hotel. the 33 year-old is now in police custody at the hospital where he's in stable, but critical condition. both officers were also taken to the hospital. one was released friday morning while the officer with one year of experience remains in critical condition. last night's events offer a stark reminder. >> of the solemn oath they take to protect and serve our city and the immense personal risk. they assume as they carry out their jobs each day, the woman inside the hotel room and her 3 children were not harmed during the shootout. it's clear to me that these lives were all in grave danger. and these officers of the reason they survived this horrific and traumatic incident. >> chief jonah says that briones was using a stolen handgun. the chief also says that in the city of san jose,

12 officers have been shot at in the last 15 months. 5 of those officers were hit by bullets. reporting live in san jose. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. rob. yeah, those very disheartening. statistics dangerous out there for those officers. >> thanks for that report. >> another big story tonight is the weather as we have a lot of rain headed our way. it's been so nice. warm, sunny skies, but things are changing as we look live there now lawrence, what we call this cognitive dissonance. it's so nice out there. and yet you're saying, you know, jumping up and down, it's going to be yeah, super rainy tomorrow. what a huge contrast we're going to see not just from the rain but just the temperatures alone. we're going to drop a good. >> 15, maybe 20 degrees around the bay area. temperature wise. we're seeing the changes now beginning to kick in the year. we start out some fog in the morning along the coast. we cleared out a bit now that front approaching its deep in the marine layer. and here we go, we're going to see more clouds as we head through the night tonight and tomorrow on the way. well, we'll see that storm system roll in moderate

to some heavy rainfall coming in tomorrow morning, especially. i think it's going to turn the showers as we head toward the afternoon, maybe an inch inch and a half across some of the mountain tops a half an inch to an inch in the valleys down the urban areas. that means in the cities where we live. that is a lot of rain. and especially this time of year, we're going to see probably more rain in one day than we usually see for the entire month of may. morning rain is going to turn to showers late in the day with a chance. some isolated thunderstorms. so here we go clouding up along the coastline now, but that storm system still has a little ways to go. but very impressive. looking up in the gulf of alaska, bring some rain already in the pacific northwest. not here just yet, but that's going to be dropping down overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. and that will get things going. you're going to hear this one as it comes through. we're going to see some gusty winds accompanying this storm as a rolls into the bay area. taking you through the night. there you go. there's your morning. you can see all the yellow, some orange showing up around the bay area. that's modern to some heavier amounts of rain in the early morning as we head toward the afternoon, things begin to taper off a bit by 2 o'clock. you're talking more scattered

showers across much of the central. the north bay still heavy rainfall in the south bay in the monterey bay. and then that scoots on out overnight. but we're not only going to see a lot of rain around the bay area. there's going to be a whole lot of snow. in fact and a credible about of snow. and this year. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. thank you, larry. it's new tonight at 6, a man was arrested in rohnert park after police say. >> he hit a child while they were crossing the street and then just drove off. it happened around 8.30, this morning on snyder lane at high ball creek. that's near rancho cotati high school. police say they were able to find the suspect. thanks to video a witness recorded officers have identified the person as 22 year-old on help. martinez, he's now facing several felony charges. the victim, he's expected to physically be ok. >> now to the latest on the pro-palestine protest happening on campuses here in california and uc berkeley protesters who set up an encampment and i've had it up

for several days now. they're negotiating with school officials. so far, no agreement that would end the occupation on campus. there. the group also wants the university to financially divest itself from israeli interests. and one students and teachers to be allowed to speak freely about the conflict without fear of punishment. >> meanwhile, in southern california, cleanup efforts are underway after an early-morning encampment raid at ucla campus yesterday. more than 200 people were arrested and then released crews have been making repairs and cleaning up the remnants of a week-long encampment. no word yet on if classes will resume at ucla as scheduled next week. meanwhile, more than 5,000 uc alumni from all 10 campuses. >> have signed a letter pledging to stop donating money to the school. the group uc alumni for palestine. of the signatures are from alumni in graduating classes as far back as 1966, the letter asks

the university system leaders to divest from the u.s. military and companies profiting from what they say. israel's oppression of palestinians. the letter also asks for special protection for students, staff and faculty who condemn the state of israel and uplift palestinian resistance. you stay with kron 4 on air and online for the latest on that war in the middle east from campus, protests to the war itself in gaza. the latest on the hostages you can head to our website kron 4 dot com. >> 4 people are arrested in san francisco after a car burglary and police chase happened just after noon wednesday near steiner in grove street and alamo square. police say that they noticed the suspect's car was involved in a robbery in the richmond district back in april. and when they tried to do a traffic stop by the car just took off. and that's when police say 3 people hopped out, ran off and the driver just kept going. officers later found and arrested the driver of the other suspects

were also arrested. this is what police found in the car, a gun and thousands of dollars worth of stolen items, including camera equipment. the suspects are facing several charges. alameda police are warning residents to be on the lookout for a permit application scams. they say that collars would request payments for permit fees saying that they're required under the permit center's new system. police say that residents and business owners can verify the authenticity of the call by reaching out to the city's permit center. the fire that destroyed to the famed horn barbecue restaurant in oakland is now being investigated as arson by the fire department. not a huge shock, but the fire happened just a few days before thanksgiving. >> and it was early in the morning owner matt doherty said his flagship restaurant was targeted by arson. and today officials confirm that saying it was deliberately set. no word tonight on a

suspect. meanwhile, horn barbecue reopened last week as part of horn's other restaurant maddie's old-fashioned in downtown oakland. so the 2 restaurants are now at the same property. could 2 there? >> oakland's first fridays is underway. the monthly event kicked off just a few minutes ago. so you still have time to get there. it is on telegraph avenue between 27th and 22nd streets goes on until 9 o'clock. tonight, the monthly event was on hiatus for some 3 months because of financial issues. but organizers say they are really glad it's back because first, fridays help celebrate the arts culture and community of oakland. >> the cinco de mayo parade in richmond and san pablo that was set for tomorrow has been postponed because of expected rain. organizers say the weather would have made it unsafe for people in the parade. but they say don't worry the festival sunday will go on as planned. supposed to be cool. but sunny sunday, the

parade, though, again, postponed to was supposed to be tomorrow. it will be rescheduled to sometime in september. >> outdoor drinking may become legal in san francisco under a new legislation by city leaders that would create the kind of entertainment zone on front street between california and sacramento street in downtown in that zone, local businesses could operate and sell alcohol as part of a special outdoor event series. it would be the city's first entertainment zone. the mayor says it's also a way to empower local businesses and bars. >> and hang out with your friends and have a beer. and listen to music without going through some lengthy city process sound permit drama, stuff. i am trying to get rid of the bureaucracy which takes away the fun in what so many are small businesses are trying to create to continue to ensure that the vibrancy

>> she says chinatown needs foot patrols in the early morning. specifically employees go to run errands. she also says that the community deserves more arrests and prosecution of those committing the crimes and endangering the public. the easiest. they use the >> so then just >> kron. 4 news reached out to the local police department. they say that they have an active and open investigation into this case. terry says stasio kron 4 news. >> in daly city, 3 people were arrested after police say one of them pushed a loss prevention officer. well, trying to get away during a robbery. it happened last month at the tj maxx store in at a shopping center. police say that the officer confronted the suspects. well, they were taking sensors off purses and then stood in front of the exit to stop them from leaving. and that's when police say one of the suspects told another suspect to push the officer out of the way.

officers say that they were able to get away with 2 purses, but the suspects were they are found stealing from another store. all 3 suspects are now facing charges. all right. time for a little weather check here as we get to one of those birds eye view shots from a shaky cam. usually that would some kind of wind out there or dance party. hard florence, what say i say a little bit wind up there today. for sure. things are changing right now in the atmosphere and they're going to change drastically. >> in the next 24 hours, going to be amazing to see as the storm system really a very late season. pretty powerful storm for this time of year. go to come rolling in. so not only we going get the rain here? well, if you have plans to go up the high country, you better be aware this is going to bring a lot of snow up there right now. just some partly cloudy skies. you're looking toward half dome right now. still some snow over the mountain tops. we're going to see a lot of snow here in the next 48 hours in the high country right now, looking up at 80 and a 50 yard greater

lake tahoe. looking good right now. you see some white up there that is not clouds. that's actually snow up there right now. but clouds are not that far away. the temperatures check this out. i want to see this right now. we're in the 50's even some 60's around a good part of lake tahoe. by the time we get into sunday, going to be topping out for highs only in the 30's. so a big change is really coming your way in the high country. you can see out here, the storm system originated the gulf of alaska and got the cold speckle clouds out here. all that cold air from alaska to become dropping down in the state for tomorrow. and that's going to bring a tremendous amount of rain here and a lot of snow in the high the watch is now become a warnings in the high country as we're expecting that storm system to roll on in bringing some heavy snow into the foothills all the way down the sierra nevada. so if you're traveling anywhere toward the tahoe area, 70 valley, maybe the bridgeport area further south, a mammoth lakes do expect lot of snow on the high country. so here it is as we head toward tomorrow morning that rain moves in the bay area. that snow begin to pick up by 11 o'clock in the morning in the high country as

we head throughout the day. that is only going to ramp up a lot of snow. in fact, some places maybe a good foot. maybe a foot and a half of snow may be the highest peaks, maybe as much as 2 feet of snow across the high country. it's a lot of snow from a thanks, lawrence. san francisco is accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay over the last 10 years. >> the environmental protection agency filed a federal complaint against san francisco yesterday alleging the city is dumped nearly 2 billion gallons of sewage into creeks, the bay and the pacific sewage contains diseases like e-coli, which can obviously cause severe illness. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with recreation activities and interfering with protecting aquatic life. >> senators are sounding the alarm because a program to help out low-income families before the internet has expired. it provided families $30 a month to help pay for internet bills. our washington

correspondent basil john has the story. >> more than 20 million americans have a tough decision to make either pay a more expensive internet bill or disconnect from their service provider. you cannot live in modern america without access to high-speed internet. the affordable connectivity program, a federal program to help struggling americans afford internet access, ran out of money. vermont senator peter welch says congress can't let this go on. this progrem has made a huge difference. he and ohio republican senator jd vance introduced a bill to extend the program so people can work from home where kids can do their homework. unfortunately, a requirement of living in the 21st century. the program ran out at the start of the month. the fcc announced a partial extension with the reduced discount for may, but nothing after that. we ought to find some way to continue to sure that people in ohio can can access new york democratic senator kirsten gillibrand is on board with an extension through the end of the year.

it would provide 7 billion dollars for the program has broad bipartisan support and we're hoping to get included in the faa bill that we're negotiating this month. texas republican senator john cornyn agrees the program is necessary. wants to avoid cases of fraud or mismanagement. want to make sure that the tax dollars that are being spent support the program are being spent wisely. welsh promises during the extension congress can work to further improve the acp reporting in washington. i'm basil, john. >> we go one-on-one with republican u.s. senate candidate steve garvey capitol correspondent eytan wallace. i'll speak with garvey about wh

>> may is asian american native hawaiian pacific islander heritage month. a new study called why we lead is out and more than 2000 students participated in that study. it looks at the effects of leadership on young asian women we're identifying youth. the study seeks to break down stereotypes like the model minority. it found that schools are vital for a a h p i use but are also places that service areas of bias and prejudice. the study says to counter this schools can create mental health initiates raise awareness on campus by amplifying students experiences. it starts a conversation and allow students to feel heard. >> study participants, i'm not seeing leadership the same way that their teachers do generational immigration
