so your bathroom stays continuously fresh for 45 days. that's the power of febreze small spaces. >> is asian american pacific pacific islander heritage month. and a new study just came out. it's called why we lead and it looks at the impacts of leadership on young asian women by looking at their diverse backgrounds and identities. and we're joined now by simon marais and the co-ceo girls leadership. she led the study. thank you so much for joining us. thank you. said that to be here. so over 2000 students participated in this study, what did you learn about the students and what stands out the most to you from the study? >> well, thank for the interest in this study. we learned quite a bit about asian american native hawaiian and pacific islander girls and gender expansive view than this first national study. one
2:45 pm
is that most of them 77% identify as leaders. now or aspire to lead in the future. second, their culture and lived experience really impact their definition of leadership. so students, study participants, i'm not seeing leadership the same way that their teachers do. >> generational immigration status. >> very influences their experience in schools. so, for example, 90% of first generation study participants have experienced by us compared to 64% of 3rd generation participants. >> they back up a once step here. how did they defined leadership? what is it that they think is a leader makes a leader of qualities of leader. >> what how did they figure out what that meant to them?
2:46 pm
>> they question the other is it wasn't one answer because there isn't one monolith in the identity, but we definitely saw scenes and the themes from the young people really centered on community. that leadership was working together to take care of community to stand up for community that really it was their relationships with other people and the interdependence ease that we're motivating their desire to >> so how did the study break down stereotypes like being a model citizen? what did it show? >> the study didn't really look at being a model citizen. and i think part of what it more so when it got up the downside of being considered a model minority, which is, you know, an often estate type nhp i use and how that really
2:47 pm
render them invisible and their differences, differences of ethnicity, of income, religion, of we're really embraced by that model home minority stereotype. >> and did this study reveal what schools are doing too support them and trying to become leaders show like how their parents are the people who they are, you know, their coaches, how they are empowering the students at all. >> definitely. yeah. that this study had some really interesting findings was school school was both a primary place of community really only second to family. school was a source of support, but it was also where a lot of these partisans participants were experiencing bias. so 38% of those experience by us had experienced it from up here. and 29% from a teacher or administrator. so i think we came away seeing that there's a big opportunity for teachers
2:48 pm
here in particular teachers. and i would also add sports coaches. although this study really focused on teachers that 68% of teachers were aware of how immigration status was impacting young people, but only one in 5 were actually talking about it in their classrooms. and so i think there's there's a great opportunity here to help give teachers the language that permission, the confidence to talk about all these different intersections of identity that are really shaping the confidence in the leadership identity of and hpi girls and gender expansive. and so how after? >> gathering all this information, how do you think we can try to uplift? ah, asian leadership. >> i think there's a few different things that we can one is really dive into understanding that generational status that makes such a difference. >> we can expand or definitions of say a girl leadership where i'm co-ceo we
2:49 pm
define leadership as making others better as a result of our presence and making that impact last. in our absence, i think this study really highlighted like who is defining better. better better for ourselves. better for each other. better. for those who are impacted for the communities that we serve. so i think really expanding our definitions of leadership that might we might have inherited from a culture of individual and really bringing in an understanding and a respect for collectivism values of collectivism and definitions that come from more collectivist cultures. can you say one more time how we can make other people around us bather by our? >> by our presence? is that what it was? yeah, exactly. leadership is making others better a result of my presence. i love that. we're going to take that. put in a pocket. use it every day. all right. i'm on the code ceo of
2:50 pm
girls leadership. thank you so much for joining us to talk about the study. appreciate your time. thank you for the invitation. appreciate it very much. and kron 4 will be honoring and highlighting asian american pacific islander heritage month. month-long here during the month of may. and make sure you watch our special coming up thursday may 23rd at the end of the month. that airs at 06:30pm. for national small business week. apple launched its first ever made for business serious, highlighting small business owners event kicked off at apple's union square location last night. it was a streamed all around the world. >> the first business to be showcased was the filipino fusion restaurants in your sig. the co-founder was joined by a golden state warriors, the hype man, franco, fun to talk about how the popular food truck grew into a very popular brick and mortar restaurant. and the owner says that he's just thrilled to be recognized by apple on a global scale, especially at the beginning of a api heritage month.
2:51 pm
>> it's an honor, you know, i think we're here right in the middle of san francisco in union square. this is not only like a a worldwide event, but it's obvious all also the first the first of its kind. so we're kind of like, you know, warm it up for everybody come after us. >> apple plans to highlight other small business owners at stores throughout the month. and we're taking a look now at the east bay years. walnut creek traffic building, no wind chill wipers here, but pilots, here's can really go over when things are going to be cloudy and rainy for tomorrow. yes, so cloudy tonight and rain coming in in the overnight hours. but really we're kind of feel the first part of tomorrow. i think for the most part, notice that high pressure that was keeping us warm and sunny as moved out and low-pressure sitting too. >> the northwest of us, that means we still got the nice clear skies out there. beautiful sunshine. but obviously you can see just kind of lurking up here. is this front. they will ultimately start to bring us some showers as we get into the overnight hours. but a pretty nice night ahead of us. before we get there and a look right now, temperatures, you can see those blue skies right
2:52 pm
here as we look at the golden gate bridge in traffic looking pretty good, too. by the way, san francisco in the 50's got 60's in oakland. but you can see we've got some nice upper 70's in our inland spots in the north bay and the east bay. so looking pretty good. so our high pressure has moved out. low pressure is getting ready to roll in. so the sunshine and warm temperatures will give way to clouds tonight and that will become showers ahead of this front as we get into the overnight. and then tomorrow behind this front comes some very cool air. this is a very classic low-pressure system. kind of frontal passage as this happened. stormy weather ahead of it. cooler ayr behind it. so here's future cast to show you the clouds picking up as we get into the night tonight. and then we get to the early morning hours. that's about 06:00am. you see all that starting to roll through the north day? a few of these cells could have thunderstorms embedded in them. there's about a 10 to 20% chance. this is 09:30am, in the morning. so this is really up in about tomorrow. that rain rolling through the south facing a little more of in the afternoon. and then just a little bit of residual shower possibility as we get through the afternoon by the evening.
2:53 pm
this should all start to clear out before it's all said and done is get pretty decently sized system here. looking out for between about a half an inch, an inch of rain across the bay area. some of our coastal mountains could see higher numbers than that. and then there's this. the temperature san jose rather napa today. look at route 74 degrees about where they should be this time of year by tomorrow. the highs are just in the 50's and that's not just napa, folks. that's a lot of us are going to be seeing those temperatures in the 50's. maybe 60 degree mark. if you're lucky you'll get to 61 or 62. but that's about it. and then sunday, we will at least clear out get rid of the rain. but we don't start warming up really until we get into next week. but you can see it is quite a run of sunshine and warmer temperatures on the other side of the weekend. thank you, kyla. up next, a special offer the oakland a's are giving to fans hoping to catch some of the teams. >> last few games at tthe oakla
