san jose. this was in the santa teresa neighborhood and that's where kron four's will. tran is standing by with the very latest on the investigation and the conditions of those officers will. >> well, we do know that one officer james was treated and released the other officer at last check still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. i mean, they came obviously with bulletproof vests. they wear underneath their uniform and get these 2 officers were still hit by a suspect inside the extended stay america right behind me, james, more officers are actually arriving to the scene. now we are close to 12 hours after they arrived and they are still here throwing more recent. it's to it. we do know there will be a news conference at 1 o'clock this afternoon. so this is what's going on right now. let me get you closer to the scene. officers are focusing on 2 locations. >> the front of one building as well as the parking. so

they're walking back and forth looking for evidence, looking to talk to witnesses. many of those witnesses, of course, were inside the hotel at the time. let me show you video when this all went down 10, 30 last night when they got a call of a disturbance at the extended stay, america. that's when they arrived. but those officers had no idea that somebody was going to open fire on them. we understand that this all unfolded on the 3rd floor. they came there according to investigators. the suspect fired shots at the officers. the officers fired shots back. ultimately 3 people were >> 2 officers as well as the suspect. now i got a chance to talk to a woman who was inside at the time. she actually thought she heard fireworks and thought it was a dream. it wasn't. >> and then all of a sudden about 2 later and bam. and i'm like, okay, i thought it was my friend or my daughter's

friend. go to the door to yell at them. it was a cop. like what's going on their video. yeah, to reject like everybody's going on. shelter-in-place looking door. stay down. is that the most you can all i could see was blood and blast outside the room. so i don't know if it was in the room or in the hallway. i know that there's one lane out and one way out and you have to have your key and everything checking through. >> now, i can tell you that 2 officers were rushed to 2 separate hospitals. one apparently deals with trauma a little bit better than the other and a lot of officers if they did not come to this location, they went to the hospital to offer comfort and aid to that officer as well as the officer's family and friends. the suspect's name not being released at this particular time. why that suspect opened fire in the first place. obviously, that's still part of the investigation. and yes, shootings take place from time to time, james. but in this

later on today, especially along the coastline. so do know that as for temperatures, we're back up into the low 70's already for vacaville in brentwood, mostly in the 50's to 60's elsewhere, though, so slowly seeing temperatures building back up into those upper 70's for some inland areas that we've been seeing a lot of lately tomorrow, a full 20 degrees cooler and along with some rainfall that will break down for you in the forecast. back to you, ok, john, thank you. it is 10, 0, 4, back to the headlines now in the east bay. police have arrested a hair stylist some disturbing. >> crimes conquer. police say the owner of chi hair salon committed these acts including rape kron four's. dan thorn has the story. >> investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. police say

who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. that's my reaction is just, you know, ab so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children park crown for went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn

kron. 4 news. >> in the north bay, a second lawsuit now has been filed against benicia unified claiming that school districts swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug at this new lawsuit, which is pretty similar to the first one, looks to hold the district accountable for hiring former teacher matthew shelton. the suit, which was filed by 3 additional youths claims that the district failed to report shelton's alleged abuse of students all to protect its reputation. shelton is charged with 7 counts of molesting a child is due in court for a preliminary hearing on monday. meanwhile, police are asking for your help in finding a man accused of killing 2 people in a hotel in livermore. this is johnston, vasquez of oakland. police say that he should be considered armed and dangerous. investigators tell us they found a man and woman shot to death in a room at the laquinta inn near 5.80, last saturday. and they believe the

vasquez new one of the victims. and he's palo alto man has died and 3 children now recovering after a crash on a san jose freeway. the chp says the driver was speeding on state route 85 wednesday night when he veered into the median and struck the guardrail, the children ages 8, 4, 2, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. teachers in campbell now are asking leaders of the campbell union high school district to keep money to you to keep leaving. they say teachers are experiencing. obviously the high cost of living in that area. a lot of them are leaving. there's a teacher shortage in the district really can't aff rd to lose any more. >> and so i can do hope that the teacher can for the district reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and

their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> well, teachers are also calling for summer class sizes to be or for class sizes to be smaller. and 4 approved classes for english language learners as well. we have some new data from the oakland police department which shows that violent crimes have dropped, which is good. kron four's theresa stasi takes a closer look, though, at also what needs to be improved. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating. we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. rape was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%.

>> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like. getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city and the shape that is it that that's bishop bob jackson with axes, gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is is where the people live.

competition in the rental market heats up. >> ok, 10, 16 is the time. let's get over to the weather center. we've got a job with a look at what's shaping up to be pretty fantastic friday. john, good morning. gorgeous out there today. we are seeing lots of sunshine, green hillsides here from the east bay hills. just a nice day to venture out. definitely the warmest day of this weekend's forecast is today. so if you'd like the past few days, get out there for this one. tomorrow is a big cool down where were sitting on satellite radar. you can see all that cloud cover up to our north. that's your storm system. slow centered up in the gulf of alaska. it is a cold system transporting all that air our direction that cooler air along with some rainfall tomorrow. today, though, we're smooth sailing a little bit windier this afternoon and a few more clouds towards the very close the day. but today is a good one. you got the green light to get out there tomorrow. it's just the green on the radar that we've got. and you can see that pushing in during our predawn hours tomorrow morning, taking us through the

rest of the morning. some pretty solid rainfall at that, especially during our morning and midday hours across the bay. tomorrow's rainfall totals will actually amount to very similar totals that we typically see for the entire month of may. so we're getting a lot of work done out of the way. the very start of the month. mother nature's not procrastinating with this one. that doesn't mean it's maybe not the easiest a to plan any outdoor activities. if you're heading to the sierra anticipate a lot of snowfall up there. a winter weather advisory goes into effect 11:00am tomorrow morning impacting i-80 highway 50 lake tahoe down through yosemite national park and mammoth lakes as well. once you head above 7,000 feet in elevation will actually see 6 to 12 inches of snowfall. and this does mean chain controls will likely be in effect starting tomorrow. today, an easy travel day up their travel back on sunday. enjoy all that snowfall on saturday. today's daytime highs will be in the 60's to 70's. nobody's quite getting to 80 degrees today

making today just subtly cooler than yesterday was but still very warm and definitely shorts and t-shirt worthy south bay temperatures, mid 70's for you, san jose at 76. well in the east bay, anywhere from low mid to even upper 70's. a few spots like conquered antioch. pittsburgh will be close to the 80 degree mark. just not quite getting there today. tomorrow, a full 20 degrees cooler for some inland areas and a pretty big cool down for the rest of us too. one day of rainfall in this forecast, we do clear out for sunday for cinco de mayo, but staying cool for the end of the weekend, temperatures will gradually climb through next week. james john, thank its 10, 19 and downtown. first thursdays is officially back on in san francisco. >> that's at series of 12 monthly block parties filled with food filled with fun. and a lot of people showed up for the first one kron four's rob nesbitt. was there. >> organizers were inspired by what they saw oakland with first fridays there. this is the first first thursday in

downtown san francisco. they have second street closed up all the way from market down this direction to howard street. we have vendors concerts live music and arly a lot of people. >> by midday thursday, volunteers and city workers were busy closing down second street in san francisco and preparation for downtown first thursday, a monthly street party to be held the first thursday of every month. and the idea of many you t o. >> white is in san francisco have something that we're doing in our downtown that's that's us. that's uniquely the owner amenities and executive director of the city joy fund has organized live music. djs drag performances, martial arts and more for first thursday with the goal of attracting 10,000 people to downtown once a month. the reason why this is important is because we need to get people to create new memories downtown to remember how close it is and how easy it is to get there and how much there is to offer for folks. downtown business owners has spent the last few months preparing for first thursdays, including david scott mabry and michelle delaney who own

>> we're back at 10. 25 and the city of san francisco has been accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay. so the environmental protection agency has filed this federal complaint against the city yesterday alleging that the city has dumped more than 1.8 billion gallons of sewage into creeks into the bay into the ocean. sewage, as you know, contains diseases like e-coli that can cause severe illness. so this is pretty serious matter. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with water, recreation and work to protect aquatic life. well, several major retailers have now pulled weighted baby

sleepers from store shelves. the cdc is advising against the use of these baby products with these beads that are built into the fabric the agency says there just isn't enough research to know if these products are safe or effective. critics believe they can restrict breathing and movement manufacturers of the weighted sleepers, however, are denied allegations. new this morning, 100,000 dhaka recipients will soon be able to receive federal health care benefits. the biden administration says that starting in november they can enroll in health plans through the federal insurance marketplace. or other basic health plans. dhaka, which is a deferred action for childhood arrivals, allows young adults were brought here to the u.s. as children, temperature to temporarily legally stay here in the u.s. and most dhaka recipients get insurance through their jobs. but this new plan is set to cover those who are not insured. >> it's really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know.

on surveillance video. funding live. >> and then days will be a car. and then. open the and then forced me and then kicked. morales says the suspect then went after his friend, a 78 year-old man and pushed him to the ground before getting back in his car and driving on. why do you think someone would do that? >> i don't because made plans talking about the best will in the eu and then. >> the open the door. mireles says the suspect parked his car in front of their workplace. both men are security guards who have worked here for decades. the incident happened just before 10, 30 wednesday morning in the area of post and kearny streets near union square. i'm just glad to hear that he's okay. serious battle stopped by to check on morales after hearing about the incident. those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of these people. we know both morales and bethel say they have not experienced any problems all working in the area over the years candid like being in the financial districts. there is. there's

some interesting characters that wander by been the. >> just keep on wondering by. so it's it has been much of an issue. >> and police say this is an active investigation are still determining if this was a hate crime. gayle ong kron, 4 news. >> thank you, gayle. 10. 31 is the time and just into the kron 4 news room just moments ago, mayor matt mahan and san jose spoke to the public about that shooting that we've been following this morning in which 2 officers were injured while they were engaging with the suspect. one of those officers are still in critical condition this morning at the hospital. we have the mayor's comments prepared. take a listen. >> last night to says it loose officers were shot in the line of duty. 2 families got the call. i was trying trade would never come. we've got a reminder of courage it takes. what on the actor city every day. knowing that you give

your life act the community. no words that convey how grateful i both of our officers and they did to see the warrant. >> the suspect was also injured in that shooting we're still waiting for an update on that person's condition. but they were taken to the hospital as well. the other officer, the second one who was hurt was released from the hospital earlier this morning. so they're recovering now at home. we will keep you updated on air and online as this story develops. again, we are expecting the police department to hold a press conference at 01:00pm with much more detail into exactly what happened. so stay tuned. kron 4 will bring that to you when when it occurs. 10. 33 is the time redwood city police arrested a man suspected of harassing a teenage girl while she was walking home from school. police say 46 year-old neal porous drove up next to this 14 year-old on clinton street and asked if he could hit on her. he also asked her to come closer to his vehicle.

police later tracked him down. thanks to home security footage nearby that captured his vehicle. porous has since been arrested. now on suspicion of contacting a minor with intent to have. cinco de mayo preparations are underway in the south bay. san jose. police are taking a different approach to the festivities this year after facing backlash from what they did last year. it was in 2023. the law enforcement blocked off highway ramps near the parade over concerns of potential vandalism and sideshows. but some of the community called those closures and the reasons behind them an example of cultural and racial bias. opportunity to talk to the public about some things that occurred last year that we want try remedy this year. >> we have a couple of closures that are going to curl. that includes only one freeway off ramp closure, which will be 6.88 king road will be on may 5th specifically for a parade. that is the situation i did that we have anticipated preplanned freeway road closures. >> the department is going to be closing down. barack obama

boulevard and west santa clara street for a car show that will be from 9 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon. tomorrow and then taking place that very same day. the salsa festival. that event is forcing a one-lane closure of south market street surrounding plaza de cesar chavez from about one in the afternoon till 9 o'clock at night. meantime, the richmond, san pablo, cinco de mayo parade that was scheduled for tomorrow is actually being postponed because of the rain that we're expecting. the parade planning committee said the weather would just make it a little too unsafe for everybody. so they decided to postpone it. the festival on sunday, though, is still going to go on as planned. the weather looks great for that day. but as for the parade, it's going to be postponed. they say, until september. in the east bay, a concrete base comic book store plans to give out thousands of free comics as part of their annual event. we're talking about the flying colors comic store its been in the community for more than 3 decades. but unfortunately their time, at least at this current location is coming to

francisco. the gun buyback program is going to be held at the san mateo superior court building on mission road. officials say they're going to be offering $50 for non-functioning guns, $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles and $200 for any ghost guns. again, you can stop by anytime tomorrow between 10 in the morning and noon. no questions asked turn in the rifles of the weapons and you'll get the cash. well, san mateo county sheriff's deputies have received some special training on how to help people with autism. earlier this week, a psychologist who gave a workshop on how law enforcement can better interact with people who have autism, whether they're in a crisis state are just in everyday situations. people with autism can sometimes be more difficult to recognize without training and experience. so they wanted officers to have that. the training also included a virtual reality portion where they can experience life-like scenarios. 10 39 is the time. and for more than a year, as we know, the sparkling lights

the bay bridge. but we're going to wrap around the cable with a note on both sides so we can deliver a static equity around the bay. you know, really not just to the pet houses in san francisco, the north bay, but, you know, all the way down into the bay view, hopefully over the oakland, alameda berkeley, richmond and the new emerging neighborhoods of treasure island and why the the new version will be called bay lights 3.60. >> if all goes well, they'll be up by march of 2025. >> a new design. a bigger show, but it will still take a lot of work. >> then we need to get up on the bridge and which is not easy to do as we as we take the old lights down, we'll put the new lights up in one big pass. we need to work with the traffic engineers to make sure that we're proposing is safe. and and then the artist needs to get up there and really spend as much time as he needs to program the lights and that she the level of beauty that i know that's already there, but he thinks he can take it even further. and then we'll have our grand lighting. >> how exciting was. catherine heenan reporting and that project they say needs a total of 11 million dollars in donations to make it happen. they raised all but the last
