well, that breaking news this morning comes to us from the south bay where 2 police officers. >> caught in a shootout with a suspect as they were responding to a disturbance call overnight. san jose. that's right. it happened in the senate to rescind neighborhood. >> kron four's will tran is live in the area with the latest now. will you've been covering this for us all morning long? >> what's the latest there? >> more information. i just spoke to a witness about 5 minutes ago and she told us that the shooting appears to have taken place on the 3rd floor. she thought she was dreaming at the time. matt, then it was not a dream when she went to investigate, you heard at least 5 shots. she went to the 3rd floor and she said she saw blood in the hallway as well as shattered glass. we will have her interview coming up at 9 o'clock. but let me show you seen video. this will get you a little closer from my location. this is where i can only stand at this particular time because they won't allow us any closer.

>> but you can see plenty of police officers in front of 2 buildings. this is at the extended stay. america off a road in south san jose. so they've been years pretty much since 10, 30 last night. there is a possibility that they might have taken at least one other person into custody. so i'll try to clarify that. we did see somebody handcuffed, but we're not sure if it's related to what happened at around 10, 30 last night. so let me show you the video from 10, 30 last night officers. they got a call of a disturbance at this particular area. the officers arrived had no idea that the suspect was going to open fire on them. and that's exactly what happened. the officers returned fire altogether. 3 people were hurt. 2 officers, one suspect. we do know that all 3, of course, were taken to local hospitals. one officer treated and released. that's the good news. moderate

injuries. however, at 8 o'clock this morning, current time right now. >> the other officers still in the hospital, life-threatening injuries and the suspect also life-threatening injuries that let me show you video of the hospital. this actually is taking part at 2 scenes. one here off course at the extended stay the other at the hospital has so many officers heard of the news either they responded to the scene or they went to the hospital to office support to the officer as well as his or her family. it appears they are still there at this very moment. i can tell you that many people they were told to stay inside shelter-in-place. do not leave your room. and the person that i talked to, she said that the officers are only allowed them allowing them to come and go from one location so they can make sure this scene is preserved for the investigators. stay with me. coming up at 9 o'clock, i will have her reaction when basically breaks it down for

noticeable coastal breeze pushing in from the north and west. and that will come along with that cooler and wetter weather for your saturday. that just means you've got to enjoy your friday this weekend. temperatures in the 50's right now of eventually giving way to a lot of 70's this afternoon. people like this past week's whether you're really going to like today's forecast tomorrow is a whole different ball game and i'll talk about it. still ahead, michael. >> thanks, john. and good morning, everyone. that time is 803. taking a look at roads this morning. things actually look fairly good. for the most part. you can see this overall view and taking a look at some drive times for you this morning. if you're heading over towards the maze, crockett to the maze. 26 minute commute. walnut creek to 5.80. it's a 12 minute commute. castro valley to the maze. 25 minutes as well. and then we've got san leandro to the maze at 23 minute taking a live look at that bay bridge. actually, it's the best it's looked all morning. those metering lights are still on, but it's only 14 minute commute into the city. a live look at the san mateo bridge. 19 minute commute there. and

everything seems to be flowing and it's the same for the richmond. sandra fell bridge 15 minute commute over that. lastly, we've got that gorgeous golden gate bridge. it is a 22 minute commute into the city. i will send it back to 2 at the desk. all right. thank you very much, michael. well, in the east bay, police have arrested a hair stylist accused of disturbing crimes conquered. police say the owner of chi hair salon. >> committed several assault, including rape, proper stance or has the story. investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. >> police say who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. that's my reaction is just, you know, ab so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes

exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children are kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> 806, is the time. and in the north bay, a second lawsuit. now it's been filed against benicia unified claiming the school district swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. so this new lawsuit, which is similar to the first one looks

to hold the district accountable for hiring former teacher matthew shelton. the suit filed by 3 additional youths claims the district failed to report shelton's alleged abuse of students to protect its reputation. shelton is charged with 7 counts of molesting a child is due in court for a preliminary hearing on monday. >> in the east bay, police are asking for help finding a man accused of killing 2 people at a hotel in livermore. this is just an vasquez of oakland. officers say best case should be considered armed and dangerous. investigators tell us they found a man and a woman shot dead in a room at the quinta inn. near 5.80, last saturday. they say that kids knew one of the victims. >> well, teachers in campbell are now asking leaders of the campbell union high school district to use money to keep staff from leaving. the teachers say with the area's high cost of living and ongoing teacher shortage, the district really can't afford to lose any more teachers. >> and so hope that the teacher can for the district

reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> and teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improved classes for officials are kicking off a program that they hope will revitalize the downtown area. they're going to be launching 5 new pop-up stores. the shops will open at 5 vacant storefronts. it's all part of the city's storefront activation program, which they hope will help reduce commercial vacancies and improve public safety. all 5 pop-up shops that are opening or women owned. they're going to celebrating a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 o'clock this morning. >> and new data from the

oakland police department shows violent crime has dropped their yeah. crawford's theresa unpacks the data and also looks at what still needs to be improved. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating where we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. rape was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. but the department of violence

prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like. getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city and the shape that is it that that's bishop bob jackson with acts, gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is is where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> so many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have

still centered the gulf of alaska but plunges on in tomorrow. and temperatures will along with that. so today a warm one tomorrow, a wet and cool. one whole different situation. 24 hours from now today is going to be nice and clear a bit of a blustery breeze at the coastline. tomorrow we will start to see a few predawn sprinkles across the bay area early morning hours. rainfall picks up in picks up quick for the north bay around 05:00am to 06:00am and then drifts into the rest of the bay area late morning with some really heavy showers late morning into the middle of the afternoon. rainfall tomorrow could exceed in some spots. your a long averages. so a month's worth of rain in just one day. flooding risk very minimal. but it is going to be slick and maybe not the best day to plan a whole lot outside the sierra getting another dose of snow. a winter weather advisory was low elevation is 5,000 feet starting tomorrow at 11:00am

from the lake tahoe area through yosemite over to mammoth lakes, all areas that we do like to head up to on the weekends. sometimes just make sure you've got those chains with us chain controls are likely to be in effect, especially come saturday. snow level drops to 5,000 feet. once you get above 7,000 feet, anywhere from a half a foot to a foot of snowfall is possible and that those very mountaintops could see even more than that. that includes donner summit and echo pass on highway 50 and on i-80. as for temperatures today, today is going to be a pleasant one, not quite as warm as the past few, but that's okay. 60's to 70's is not a bad place to spend the afternoon and it is going to be a whole lot cooler than this tomorrow. so take full advantage of your friday temps in the south bay in the mid 70's for your daytime highs. low to mid 70's for most of the east couple of us, though, like concord getting up to the upper 70's at 78 antioch in vacaville are very warm spots at 79 today.

tomorrow, as much as 20 degrees cooler than today. along with that rain sunday, clearing out just in time for cinco de mayo. it's going to be a lot cooler, though, for the finish your weekend. gradually warming back up through next week. michael, thanks, john. love you're seeing this morning. the time is 8.16, everyone. and taking a look at your roads. everything's moving pretty smoothly for the most part on this. >> gorgeous friday morning. taking a look. livermore to dublin 12 minutes dublin to fremont 15 and if you're taking 8.80, san leandro to milpitas 30 minutes, we're still seeing residual delays. there was an accident there about an hour and a half ago. but still kind of a slowdown in the hayward area. so keep that in mind milpitas to sunnyvale. 7 minutes, taking a look, antioch to concord. 32 minutes. it's normally congested there around this time of the morning. if you are using westbound 80 crockett to the maze, 26 minute commute. not bad. you're turning off and taking the richmond. sandra fell bridge. well, that's a 15 minute commute over into the north bay that bay bridge. look at how clear everything

there looks completely smooth. those metering lights are still on, but it's only a 14 minute commute into the city this morning. taking a look at that southbound 80 oakland to a highway. 38, as i told you, some residual delays, but still only 11 minute commute there. taking a look over towards the south a little bit. those heading into fremont from dublin, 15 minutes. and lastly, we'll take a look at that san mateo bridge. it is 17 minutes on to the peninsula. send it back to to the desk. michael, thank you. >> 8, 17, 18 now is the time and developing news this morning. tensions have been growing out at u c berkeley where pro palestinian demonstrators are now starting to clash with supporters of israel. the palestinian supporters say they've been negotiating with the university, but both sides haven't come to an agreement yet that will end this occupation among their demands. they want the university to financially divest from israeli interests and condemn the israeli government for what it's been conducting in gaza. they also want students and teachers to be allowid to speak freely about the conflict without fear of punishment. as for the

actual encampment outside of sproul hall. well, things have been largely peaceful. that was up until wednesday night when someone stole an israeli flag from counter-demonstrators and that led to a fight. >> person not from the site, signed kind of approach to design his group in so students formed a line between the 2 groups tried try to keep tensions down. but still the person managed to grab a israeli flag and talk on so there was a little scuffle as they flock to the fight. >> the university of california's police department says an attempted robbery of a flag and a physical assault did fact happen right around 7 o'clock wednesday night. and that led to 3 people being injured. we reached out directly to the university about what happened. and in a statement, they say that police are currently investigating, but that they do condemn violence of any kind between protesters and counter demonstrators. meantime, more than 5,000 uc alumni from all 10 campuses signed a letter pledging to

stop donations. that letter is asking university officials to divest from the u.s. military and companies profiting from what they say is israel's oppression of palestinians. >> for your money, gen z is turning to trade schools over traditional four-year colleges. right now there is a 37,000 there are 37,000 jobs that are lacking in the trade industry. and many gen x-ers are looking to fill that void. experts say the trade industry is attractive to the younger generations because it can give them the opportunity to streamline their ticket to the middle class without taking on large amounts of debt. >> being automotive tech, i could have on work at different dealerships from honda mercedes benz and not allow them to learn and adapt to all the companies of and me doing this. i can pass it down to my kids. >> experts say one of the reasons the industry is seeing a spike is the influx of electric vehicles. they say

that's creating a growing need for the automotive technicians industry across the country. >> well, downtown first thursdays is officially back in san francisco. yes, pretty exciting. it's a series of 12 monthly block parties filled with fun and food have made food as but takes us there. >> organizers were inspired by what they saw oakland with first fridays there. this is the first first thursday in downtown san francisco. they have second street closed up all the way from market down this direction to howard street. we have vendors concerts live music and clearly a lot of people. >> by midday thursday, volunteers and city workers were busy closing down second street in san francisco and preparation for downtown first thursday, a monthly street party to be held the first thursday of every month. and the idea of many you o. >> why isn't francisco have something that we're doing in our downtown that's that's us. that's uniquely the owner amenities and executive director of the city joy fund

has organized live music. djs drag performances, martial arts and more for first thursday with the goal of attracting 10,000 people to downtown once a month. the reason why this is important is because we need to get people to create new memories downtown to remember how close it is and how easy it is to get there and how much there is to offer for folks. downtown business owners has spent the last few months preparing for first thursdays, including david scott mabry and michelle delaney who own one 11 minute gallery. they've seen other businesses close around their art gallery since the pandemic and hope the monthly street party is here to stay was working really hard to make really fun things happen everybody in the and make the fun things happen that we all moved here for. >> so i want everybody to like get enjoy their city. first thursdays are free, but organizers are encouraging people to register online through eventbrite with 6,000 people already on the list. but that's a lot. really cool. good for business and

>> 25 is the time new this morning. 100,000 dhaka recipients will soon be able to receive federal health care benefits. >> the biden administration says that starting in november they can enroll in health plans through the federal insurance marketplace or other basic health plans. dhaka, which stands for deferred action for childhood arrivals allows young adults who are brought here to the u.s. as children to temporarily legally stay in the u.s.. most dhaka recipients have insurance through their jobs. but this new plan is to cover those who are not currently insured. the city and county of san francisco is accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay. the environmental protection agency filed a federal complaint against the city yesterday alleging that dumped more than 1.8 billion gallons of sewage into creeks into the bay and into the ocean. sewage contains diseases like e-coli, which can cause severe illness. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with water, recreation activities and interfering with the protecting of aquatic life.

well, bay area air quality officials are accusing tesla of persistent air quality violations. they say the car companies emitting harmful contaminants into the atmosphere. the chemicals apparently are coming from the paint shop operations there. tesla's fremont facility. officials now seeking an abatement order to require tesla to come up with a plan to lower those emissions if it moves forward, the public will be able to attend the hearing and comment on the alleged violations. we're going take a break. a 27 the time coming up on the kron. 4 morning news. if you recently applied for a permit in alameda. >> you could need to watch out for a new scam that's trying to target. you will have details on that in a moment.

you know, flying colors. comics has been in the community for more than 3 decades, but their time at their current location has run out. yeah. a kron four's philippe djegal takes a closer look at what's going on. >> the countdown to free comic book day will culminate with a big batch of flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord saturday. it's may the 4th be with you. star wars so there may be some characters from a galaxy far, far away. will also be an emotional day for joe field and his loyal customers who have been shopping in his store since it opened 35 years ago. >> his lease is up at the end of the year and he has not been offered or renewal. we hope there isn't a closing date. we hope that there's more of a transition day and that's what we're working towards as field explores options to settle down at another store front. he is proud of what his business has brought to the community how the comic book event. he found 23 years ago has spread worldwide. >> andrew has been purchasing comic springfield, most his

planned. john's been talking about the weather being great on sunday. the parade will be postponed, they say, until september. so we'll look forward to it. them. meanwhile, miles preparations are underway in the south bay and san jose police right now are taking a different approach to festivities after they backlash from last year in 2023, a law as we know, blocked off highway ramps right near the parade over concerns of potential vandalisms in sideshows. but some of the community called those closures and the reasons for them an example of cultural and racial bias. opportunity to talk to the public. >> about some things that occurred last year that we want try remedy this year. we have a couple of closures that are going to curl. that includes only one freeway off ramp closure, which will be 6.88 king road will be on may 5th specifically for a parade. that decision should event. i did that. we have anticipated preplanned freeway road closures. >> well, the department will be closing barack obama boulevard and west santa clara street for a car show from 9

in the morning till 4 in the afternoon and taking place that same day is the salsa festival. that event is forcing a one-lane closure of south market street surrounding plaza de cesar chavez from one until 09:00pm. >> we're learning more about 2 security guards, one almost 60 years old and the other almost 80 who were attacked in downtown san francisco on wednesday morning. that attack was caught on camera just before 10, 30 near union square. watch this. this funding >> and then days will be a car. and then. open the bill and then forced me and then can we. >> 59 year-old bob morales, you just heard from there says that the man shown in this video attacked him and went after his friend, a fellow security guard pushing that man to the ground before getting back in his car and driving off a person who lives in the neighborhood. stop by to check on those 2 security guards after hearing about what happened here. >> those really disturbing to

see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know. >> raleigh says he has not experienced any problems while working in this area over the years as a guard. police say this is an active investigation and are still determining if this was a hate crime as those 2 men are elderly and asian. and now to an update on a stnry we first brought you on the kron 4 morning news on thursday morning. some scary moments for a woman and her daughter who found themselves caught in the middle of a cross fire in oakland. now, police there are working to find out what led to the shooting and who is responsible. we spoke with the family of the victims. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove >> it all happened near 9th 9, rather 98 and cherokee thursday morning near bishop o'dowd high school. the woman's husband tells us she tried to drive away, but their suv was hit by another car,

eventually flipping onto its side. as you can see there, the woman and her daughter managed to crawl away from their vehicle, mostly unharmed. they were taken to the hospital just as a precaution. police are investigating and have not yet identified any suspects or a motive. anyone with information is asked to please contact oakland police. >> meanwhile, alameda police are warning residents about a scam targeting permit applicants. authorities say the scammers are pretending to be city workers and the calling up these victims and requesting payment for those permit fees. officials say the city will never call you and request payment of the phone. they say if you get a call like this and you think you're being scammed contact the city and report it. >> for national small business week, apple launched its first ever made for business series highlighting small business owners. the event kicked off at apple's union square location last night. it was streamed around the world. the first business to be showcased was the filipino fusion restaurants in us to stick.

after responding to a disturbance overnight in san jose. it happened on santa teresa road or in that neighborhood kron four's will tran been on the story for us this morning. joining us now live with the very latest on the situation. >> well, >> police officers are still on the scene and when it's all said and then they could be here throughout the morning and into the afternoon, making it more than 12 hours after arriving to this location. you can see the mobile command unit right behind me. there are dozens of police officers taking over this area. now, let me give you a little bit closer to the scene. officers. they are focusing on 2 areas, one in front of one building and the other in the parking lot. so they've been walking back and forth pretty much throughout the morning. looking for evidence, hoping to talk to witnesses. they actually arrived here at 10, 30 last night. me show you video of that. it was a disturbance call to san jose police officers came here and this is in south san joff
