beginning with that breaking news. 2 police officers shot after responding to a disturbance overnight in san jose. that's right. it happened in the santa teresa neighborhood. kron four's will tran is live in san jose with the latest on this. >> well, you've been following this story for us all morning long with the latest. >> 8 and a half hours into it and more officers actually coming to the scene. this is been shut down as the motel hotel. well, it's now a crime scene. let me step out of the way before i show you video that went down at around 10, 30 last night. let me give you live pictures coming from this location. so i will zoom in and it looks like the officers are focusing on 2 areas. you can see the front of the building, right? there are plenty of officers there. and then plenty of officers. let me just slide over a little bit here. and you can see officers in the parking lot right there. so they've been taking pictures looking down

at the ground. so a lot of evidence that still needs to be collected. and look at this. look at all those police cars at this location. doesn't of them still here after responding to reports of 2 of their fellow officers were shot. and then let me show you video. this all went down at around 10, 30 last night when officers came to this location here. it's the extended stay. america to a disturbance call. they were going to obviously check it out when all of a sudden shots ring out from the suspect. the officers, they returned fire. ultimately 30 people were rushed to the hospital. we do know that those 2 officers were hit by gunfire. that's when they called for backup. and that's why so many officers came to the scene and still remain at the scene. let me show you video of the hospital. we understand that the officers went to individual hospitals. so they went to 2 different ones, one treating the trauma the other for injuries. and

here's the reason why we do know that one officer treated and released for his or her injuries. moderate injuries. that is the good news. however, the second officer still in the hospital this morning with life threatening injuries as well as the suspect. the suspect's name not being released to the public at this time or why the suspect even open fire on those 2 police officers. but we do know that the suspect also has life threatening injuries this morning. as far as this scene here, it is been locked down since 10, 30 last night. you can see all this police officer street behind me. this is at brighton all road in the street. right behind me is san ignacio avenue, lots of activity. and i thought it would de-escalate. but it seems now that the sun is up and more officers are here and now that they can clearly look at the ground collect evidence, more officers actually are coming to this location. back to you. >> okay. we'll thank you very much for that.

to the desk. michael, thank you. >> all right. well, in the east bay, a hairstyle is now under arrest and accused of some disturbing crimes have conquered. police say the owner of she hair salon committed several assaults, including rape kron four's. dan thorn has more. investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. >> police say who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. that's my reaction is just, you know, ab so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for

families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> in the north bay, a second lawsuit has been filed against benicia unified claiming the school district swept teacher abuse allegations under the rug. so this new lawsuit, which is similar to the first one, looks to hold the district accountable for hiring former teacher matthew shelton. the suit filed by 3 additional students are youths claims the district failed to

report shelton's alleged abuse of students to protect its reputation. shelton is charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. he's due in court for a preliminary hearing on monday. >> in the east bay, police are asking for help finding a man accused of killing 2 people at a hotel in livermore. this is john sutton, vasquez of oakland. they say that's because should be considered armed and dangerous. investigators tell us they found a man and woman shot dead in a room at the look into in near 5.80, last saturday. they say that his new one of the victims. in the south and east palo alto man is dead and 3 children recovering after a crash on a san jose freeway. the chp says the driver was speeding on state route. 85 wednesday night when he veered into the median and hit a guardrail. the kids ages 8, 4, 2, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >> well, teachers in campbell are asking leaders of the campbell union high school district to use money to keep staff from leaving. the

teachers say that with the area's high cost of living in ongoing teacher shortage, the district really can't afford to lose any more teachers. >> so hope that the teacher can for the district reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> well, teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improved classes for english language learners. happening today, san jose city officials are kicking off a new program to revitalize the downtown area. they're launching 5 new pop-up shops. the shops will open at 5 vacant stores. it's all part of the city storefront activation program and it aims to help reduce commercial vacancies, which they believe will improve public safety in the end, all 5 pop-up shops opening are women owned.

they'll be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 o'clock this morning. >> well, new data from the oakland police department shows violent crime has dropped. it has yet force theresa updates us now on this data and also takes a look at what still needs to be improved. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating. we're we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. rape was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into

the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless per team looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like. getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city and the shape that is it that that's bishop bob jackson with axes, gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is is where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes.

today is the last of ouh drier warmer days before our cold front comes in tomorrow morning. and right now this low is centered up in the gulf of alaska. dives in tomorrow. cools us down very noticeably and results in a rainfall and mountain snow for us now, the timing of this rainfall is not going to arrive until tomorrow morning. so as for today, we're looking really nice. futurecast showing those dry skies today. increasing cloud cover towards the latter half of the day today. and rainfall really moves in during your predawn hours tomorrow on into around 06:00am right here. some heavy rainfall moving into the north bay and moving into the rest of the bay area. after that towards the middle of the day. so definitely going to be active day for your saturday. one to plan out some indoor activities, maybe so rainfall will range anywhere from a half an inch to even an inch of it in for a lot of areas. this will exceed your monthly averages in just one day's time. so pretty significant system. the sierra also getting a solid dose of snow. winter weather advisory

now, it is not looking too great. everybody is pretty much stop and go. the metering lights are on. they've got a car that is also disabled on the right hand side of the lane. but i will have more drive times for you coming up in the next half hour. we'll send it back to you. >> all right. thank you very much, michael. 7.18, is the time the city and county of san francisco is now accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay environmental protection agency filed a federal complaint against san francisco yesterday alleging the city has dumped more than 1.8 billion gallons of sewage into creeks into the bay into the pacific ocean. so which contains diseases like e-coli, which can cause severe illness. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with water, recreation activities and protecting aquatic life. >> for your money this morning, more bad news coming out of tesla and the monthly jobs report was just released jane king is live at the nasdaq with those stories and more. good morning to you.

>> hi, stephanie. good morning. so the jobs report was good for wall street. not so good for main street. we added 175,000 jobs was less than expected. so it looks like the job market is softening a bit. the unemployment rate went up to 3.9% of the areas of the economy that jobs, health care, social assistance and also transportation and warehousing. well, tesla employees got pink slipped a week ago. now the summer internship program is a victim of cost cutting summer interns have been posting on linked in that they already spent thousands of dollars on housing in preparation for the opportunity. this is all quite a forms that says there are rescinded offers and this affects more than 3,000 university in college students. well, home buyers are turning more to just double rate mortgages. this mortgage rates have been over 7% for the 3rd straight week. the share of arms made up nearly 8% of total applications for the weekend april. 26 with the mortgage bankers association, which was the highest share this year

plaza and hall there things have been largely peaceful up until wednesday night. that's when someone stole an israeli flag from counter demonstrators and that led to a fight. >> person not from the site is signed a kind of approach to design a scoop in so students formed a line between the 2 groups tried try to keep tensions numbers. still the person managed to grab a israeli flag and talk on so there was a little scuffle as they fought to the fight. >> no, the university of california's police department says in attempted robbery of a flag and physical assault did happened just before 7 o'clock wednesday night. that led to 3 people being injured. we did reach out directly to the university about what happened. and in a statement, they say that police are currently investigating and they do condemn violence of any kind between protesters and counter demonstrators. >> it's really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know.

>> we're back at 7.25. and sad to report here. but a man died after being involved in a single-vehicle crash on southbound 101 just north of west side road in healdsburg was yesterday afternoon. the chp says the driver for whatever reason veered to the right went off the roadway, tumbled down an embankment rolling over the whole time.

the chp says they found that person inside the car. he already passed away. ty don't know what caused that person to leave the road. they don't think the car is going very fast, but they're investigating. meanwhile, 2 people robbed the letter carrier of their postal keys in broad daylight. now there's surveillance video showing the postal carrier. this was just after 12:30pm, in the afternoon thursday on euclid avenue in oakland. >> investigators say the 2 suspects approached the care. you can see there in the background just he left this gated area. >> they forcibly stole the keys and ran off the u.s. postal inspection service is offering a reward now up to $150,000 for any information leading to an arrest. in this case. >> happening tomorrow, residents on the peninsula can exchange their guns for cash in south san francisco. the gun buyback happens at the san mateo superior court building on mission road. officials plan to offer $50 for non-functioning guns. $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles and $200 for ghost guns. you

really has been a really nice morning seeing the sun rise at around 6 o'clock. and now we're seeing that nice glow there as well. you can make it not just above the shot there, but it is a little breezy out there right now. godejohn with the forecast. a drop yet a little breezy and just to compliment of a little bit of cloud cover as well out there. >> we are definitely seeing bright skies behind me at the golden gate bridge. but if you look at the bay bridge right here, what you've got is that nice sunrise in just a little bit of the evidence of that marine there pushing in across the bay area. today's daytime highs will be a little bit cooler tomorrow is when the real cool air gets here. tomorrow's also and we're going to start to see some showers today. dry that cool northwesterly wind continues to push in along the coastline. daytime highs today will reach the 70's currently, though it's the 50's out

let's get to that breaking news story this morning. the 2 police officers that were shot while responding to a call overnight. san jose. that's right. it happened in the senate to recent neighborhood and that's where we're going to find kron four's will tran. he's been following this story for us all morning will. what's the latest? >> well, let me show you what's going on. it has not de-escalated more officers are at the scene and actually started arriving. maybe about a dozen or so starting at around 07:30am, in the morning. so they are still investigating. let me step out and show you live images from the scene just to show you what's going on. so it looks like right there. look at all those officers, as i mentioned. so they are not leaving whatsoever. they are in front of the building here. and this is at the extended stay america. so they have taken over the front. they've actually taken over this entire neighborhood as it's a crime scene. so look at the scope. >> of the

>> all right. looks like we're having some audio issues with, though, will signal that we're going to try to reconnect with him. but again, from what we understand from the san jose police department, there was this call last night on san a show avenue as police responded, they confronted a person and at some point that person apparently opened fire on the 2 officers. that was an exchange of gunfire. police going back and in the end, both those police officers and the suspect were taken to the hospital. one officer was released. the second officer, though, did sustain a more moderate injuries. and that officer is still recovering this morning. we understand that he has been stabilized so that at least some good news. the suspect was also taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. that person also now worse told stabilized, but still in critical. so that is the very latest least on the conditions of the people. clearly, police are still on scene. they're still collecting evidence still putting together the pieces. they will need to determine exactly what happened out there. and again, once we'll reconnect a signal will go back out live to once

again for another update. all right, james. and we also want to add 2, but several roads are also closed during this time as police investigate the shooting. a san ignacio. >> avenue is closed from bernal wrote a great oaks boulevard and westbound bernal wrote a shuck from monterey road to san ignacio avenue. all right. we guards, one almost 60 years old. the other almost 80 attacked in downtown san francisco wednesday morning. the attack was caught on camera just before 10, 30 near union square. watch this. >> this funding and then days building a and then. open the bill and then forced me and then we. >> 59 year-old bob morales, who you just heard there, says that the man shown in this video attacked him, then went after his friend, a fellow guard pushing that man to the ground before getting into his car and driving off. now a person who lives in the neighborhood step by to check on the 2 victims after hearing about this incident.

>> those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know. >> morales says he has not experienced any problems while working in the area as a security guard over the years. police say this is an active investigation and are still working to figure out if this was a hate crime. >> an update now to a story we first brought you on the kron 4 morning news thursday morning. a scary moment for a woman and her daughter who found themselves caught in the middle of a cross fire in oakland. police are working right now to try to figure out who was that opened fire in that area. we did speak with the family member, the the father of the child that was in that car. here's what he had to say. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off. >> yeah. so it's all happened right near 98th and cherokee

thursday morning, right near bishop without high school. the woman's husband, as you just heard, told us that she tried driving away as soon as she heard the gunfire. but her suv was struck by another car that was speeding in the area, flipping the issue be on its side. the woman and her daughter managed to crawl out of that vehicle and rimrock leslie were not harmed really. they were taken to the hospital just as a precaution. police are investigating so far they haven't identified any suspects or motive behind that gunfire. redwood city police have arrested a man suspected of harassing a teenage girl while she was walking home from school. so police say 46 year-old neal porous drove up next to this 14 year-old on clinton street and asked if he could hit on her. he also asked her to step closer to his vehicle. now he was later tracked down by police. thanks to neighboring home security cameras that recorded his vehicle for us has since been arrested. now on suspicion of contacting a minor with intent to have. >> happening conquer based comic book store plans to give

and again, one of the big breaking news stories we're following this morning comes to us from the south bay where we have to san jose police officers that have been shot last night. they were responding to a call. this in the area right around the extended stay america. in fact, it was in that parking lot. one of those officers that went to the hospital has been released this morning. the of those still in critical condition. that's the latest word from police. these officers were investigating was only described to us as a disturbance call on saint ignatius avenue when they came into contact with this man they had an exchange. one point. they say that man opened fire on the 2 officers. the police returned fire and in the end, all 3 had to go to the hospitals around 10, 30 last night. but like i said, one of those officers released, but the other still in serious condition, as is that suspect. so we're still waiting for more clarification on exactly what happened. we know the police are still at the scene. they're collecting evidence. our own will tran is
