last night. and you can see all those cars behind me. it seems like it happened right there at the motel. the extended stay america. that's where they are focusing their attention. this is awful but no road. and san ignacio avenue, only police officers, of course, are allowed at this particular location. let me show you video. this all went down, as i mentioned at around 10, 30 last night when the officers responded to a disturbance call when they got to the scene. unsuspecting lee, someone shot at them. they returned fire at the suspect. we do know that all 3 were hit. that's when they called for backup, which is why you see so many police officers at the scene. let me show you another scene. so those 2 police officers and the suspect were rushed to local hospitals. we do know that one officer is still fighting for his or her life listed in critical condition. life-threatening injuries. same goes for the suspect at

this particular time. the suspect's name not being released to the public or why this person decided to open fire on those particular officers. we hope to have a news conference a little bit later this morning to get an update. but again, the very latest update which happened shortly before 5 o'clock this morning. the good news is one officer was treated and released for his or her injuries. the other one still in the hospital and this scene here. so many people were inside at the time. stephanie. james, i saw some of the guests come out to their cars to grab something. and when i did see that they were escorted by police officers. so they are keeping a close eye on the scene because this motel at 10, 30 last night, suddenly became a crime back to you. >> thank you very much. we'll come back to you throughout the morning for updates appreciated. yeah, absolutely. in the meantime, let's go ahead and check in with john for a look at the weather this morning. that's right here at

601. we've got whether that's looking pretty good for friday ahead of a big storm this weekend job yet today, the last of these warmer days, these drier days that we've been seeing. >> we are about to see a huge switch up come tomorrow involving some rain, some mountain snowfall and much colder temperatures. we're sitting this morning. just take a look at the sunrise view from the embarcadero. gorgeous way to start the day. i promised you little bit of fog yesterday and there you go just a little bit still getting a sunrise, though we are seeing radar currently showing overall clear conditions and we're certainly remaining dry today. a bit blustery at the coastline. those winds do continue closer to the coast. calmer conditions for the rest of us temps in the 40's to 50's right now. very similar start to where we were the past couple of days. temperature wise later on today. not quite as warm but similar still rising well into the upper 70's tomorrow. everything changes. i've got those changes for you in your full forecast. michael.

>> thanks, john. good morning, everyone. the time is 602. right now taking a look at traffic will if you're heading out this morning and you're using 8.80, you may want to start moving a little bit quicker to head out the house. we've got a traffic collision on southbound 8.80, in hayward. it's near industrial parkway. just north of there. it's causing some congestion. a chp is working to get things out of the way there. but there are some lane closures. so keep that in mind. if you're heading anywhere towards the south, they're just southbound on 8.80, taking a live look right now at the bay bridge. it's a 10 minute commute over that those metering lights are on. and that's an is slowly coming up. taking a look at the mateo bridge, 13 minutes over that. not too bad this morning that richmond, sandra fell bridge a seven-minute commute over that. and lastly, that golden gate bridge, it's a 19 minute commute into the city this morning. we'll send it back to 2 at the desk. all right, michael, thank you. 603, is the time. and in the east bay, a hair stylist now arrested and accused of disturbing. >> crimes conquered. police say the owner of she hair salon committed several assaults, including rape.

>> kron four's dan thorn brings us the latest. >> investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. police say who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. my reaction is just, you know, ab so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her.

investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> alright, 604 is the time in the north bay. a second lawsuit now has been filed against benicia unified claiming the school district swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. so this new lawsuit, which is similar to the first one looks to hold the district accountable for its negligent hiring. a former teacher, matthew shelton, the suit filed by 3 additional youths claims the district failed to report shelton's alleged abuse of its students and concealed his actions to protect the district's reputation. shelton is charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. he's due in court for a preliminary hearing on monday. civil

litigation isn't scheduled until september. so we'll be following this story. elsewhere in the north bay, a second lawsuit was filed against. well, this is that same story that we were talking about where allegations are that the school district's swept accusations under the rug. and again, we're looking this to proceed later on in the year. so we're hoping will be able to follow this again in september when it arrives in court. >> in the east bay, police are looking for help finding a man accused of killing 2 people at a hotel in livermore. this is john sutton, vasquez of oakland. they say that kids should be considered armed and dangerous. investigators tell us they found a man and woman shot dead in a room at the into and near 5.80, last saturday. they say his new one of the victims. in the south bay, a man is dead and 3 children recovering after a crash on the south san jose freeway. the chp says the driver was speeding on state

route. 85 wednesday night when he veered into the median and hit a guardrail. they say that driver died at the scene. the kids ages 8, 4, 2, were taken to the hospital with some minor injuries. investigators say the driver and the kids are from east palo alto. >> well, teachers in campbell now asking leaders of the campbell union high school district to keep money to keep staff from leaving. so the teachers say that with the area's high cost of living and ongoing teacher shortage, the district can afford to lose any more teachers. >> and so i can hope that the teacher can for the district reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improved classes for english language learners. happening

today, san jose city officials are kicking off a new program to revitalize the downtown area. they're launching 5 new pop-up shops and the shops will open at 5 vacant storefronts. it's all part of the city's storefront activation program which aims to help reduce commercial vacancies. they say this will improve public safety overall, all 5 pop-up shops opening are women owned and they'll be ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 o'clock this morning. >> well, new data from the oakland police department shows violent crime has dropped its actually some good news from forestry says stasio unpacks the data and what still needs to be improved. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating where we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023.

>> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. rape was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city and the shape that is it that that's bishop bob jackson with axes, gospel church. he says

some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is is where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have you that the numbers could could skyrocket. james deadly, a criminal justice professor at san francisco state university and former san francisco police deputy chief says while data shows a downward trend now it doesn't predict the future. >> and that can be troubling. in the meantime, joe, she says that they will continue to work hard and help oakland become better. >> we also realize that a large part of community safety is how people are feeling and

team right now. first pitch is at 3.40. >> all right. lots of exciting news around the bay area this morning. well, i'm speaking of that. weather is always a big talking for especially when we've got changes on the horizon. yeah, ashleigh, one last day to get out their job before the rain know that mother nature keeping us on our toes just like she did through april may is bringing variety with it. today is going to be a nice and sunny one. again, we are seeing a little bit of fog in a few spots. not so much. the golden gate bridge, though. a nice view right there. there is some marine layer pushing back into the bay this morning. we are just a touch cooler than yesterday. big cool down comes tomorrow with this next system along with a cold front that pushes in really from the gulf of alaska. >> bringing in that cooler arctic air our direction in along with it. some pretty decent may rainfall. timing of all this, not until tomorrow morning. so we do have a consistently dry day for us today. little bit of cloud

cover, especially increasing towards the latter half of the day today. tomorrow morning, a few sprinkles during a pre-dawn hours. and then rainfall really arrives after the sun comes up tomorrow. this is all going to add up to around 3 quarters of an inch of rain for most of the bay area. in many cases, this will be their tie or exceed your monthly averages for may in just one day's time. so this is a significant system for this late in the year and for the sierra. we are looking at a winter weather advisory going into effect tomorrow morning at 11 through 11:00pm tomorrow from south lake tahoe. on 3 yosemite over to mammoth lakes. all those well traversed areas getting need chains for those as specially on saturday, snow level drops to 5,000 feet in elevation and above 7,000 feet. expect widespread anywhere between a half a foot to a foot of it. so this is some decent snowfall and even higher snow levels in those highest elevations, multiple feet at the very crest of the sierra nevada. today, though, still

that break from the rain. we've got another nice day for you. good friday to be getting outside, enjoying as much as you can its first fridays in oakland today. thank goodness the rain is holding off until tomorrow. daytime highs in the south bay in the mid 70's east bay. temperatures low to mid 70's for you. as for oakland, you'll be at 70 degrees today. our warmest spots, antioch in vacaville, just shy of 80 degrees today. santa rosa at 78 tomorrow's temperatures only low 60's and that's what the warmest this is a cold system pushing through. so it is a dramatic change and we stay cool into sunday. even though we drive back out next week, gradually warming back into the 80's by next thursday. michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. the time is 6.17, taking a look right now at your roads. things look pretty good. we did have some accidents this morning, but they have since cleared up and that was on 8.80. you can see leandro to milpitas 30 minute commute and that is where they were dealing with the

collision. but always been clear. livermore to dublin, 11 minutes, dublin to fremont 14 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. 6 minutes. not too bad. taking a look. and the antioch area, 17 minute commute from there to concord and those were using westbound 80 conquered or excuse me crockett to the maze. it's a 17 minute commute. once you get over towards richmond, sandra fell bridge and you're utilizing its going to be 8 minutes to get over towards the north bay. if your take in the bay bridge this morning, 11 minute commute means to fremont street into the city. those metering lights are on. taking a look at southbound open highway. you can't oakland to highway 2.38. excuse me. you can see an 11 minute commute keep in mind. there was an accident over towards the hayward area on 80 southbound. so keep that in mind, dublin to fremont 14 minute commute. and lastly, a look at that san mateo bridge. it is a 14 minute commute over that will send it back to you to the desk. all right, michael, thank you so much. the city and county of san francisco is being accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay.

>> the epa filed a federal complaint against san francisco just yesterday alleging the city dumped over 1.8 billion gallons of sewage into creeks, the bay and the pacific ocean. so which can contain diseases like e-coli, which can cause severe illness. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with water, recreation activities and the well being of aquatic life in the bay. a bay area. air quality officials are accusing tesla, persistent air quality violations. they say tesla is emitting harmful, harmful contaminants into the air. the chemicals they say are coming from a paint shop that's operating at tesla's fremont facility. officials are seeking an abatement order to require tesla to come up with a plan to lower emissions if it moves forward, the public will be able to attend a hearing and comment on these alleged violations. >> we're more developing news now. tensions are boiling over uc berkeley where pro-palestinian protesters have clashed with people there to support israel. the

palestinian supporters say they've been negotiating with the university, but the 2 sides haven't come up with an agreement just yet that would end this occupation on campus. among their demands. they want to use the university or they want the university to financially divest from israeli interests, condemn what the israelis are doing to the people of gaza and they want students and teachers to be allowed to speak freely about the conflict without fear of punishment. as for the actual in camp and outside of sproul hall, things have been largely peaceful until wednesday night. that is when counter protesters got an israeli flag stolen from them leading to a fight. now, the university of california police department says in an attempted robbery of a flag and physical assault happened just before 7 o'clock wednesday night. and that led to 3 people being injured. we did reach out directly to the university about what happened in a statement. they say police are currently investigating and they condemn violence of any kind between protesters and counter protesters. president biden

now speaking out about a wave of college protests that we have seen sweep the nation. my and police have now arrested more than 2000 pro-palestinian protesters. >> in recent weeks, our washington correspondent raquel martin joins us live now with the latest on this recall. good morning. well, yesterday was all president biden trying to strike a balance on one hand, he says that the country is built on the bedrock of protest and free speech, but is unequivocally condemning those who are choosing violence and vandalism. order must prevent president joe biden is hoping to simmer escalating protests across college campuses to right to protest. >> but not the right to cause chaos in his first formal speech on the matter thursday, the president condemned those who turn to violence to voice their disapproval of israel's military campaign. in goes up, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations. not of this is a

peaceful protest. but on capitol hill, republicans like missouri senator eric schmitt say the remarks come too late. it's despicable. took him a week to start talking about this. south dakota republican senator john thune says he wants the president to go further to protect jewish students who say they've been targeted since the start of the war frayed. >> to walk across their own campuses. this week the house passed legislation to expand the legal definition of anti-semitism. is a big win >> for jewish americans. >> new york republican congressman mike lawler who led the charge says doing so will help the department of education crackdown on allegations of jewish hate on campus. the bill passed with broad bipartisan support, but opponents including jewish democratic new york congressman jerry nadler warned the expanse of language could be weaponized speech that is critical of israel alone. >> does not constitute unlawful discrimination.

1, 1, just north of west side road. we'realng about the healdsburg area. happened yesterday afternoon. chp says the driver veered to thht off the roadway, went down an embankment and roller. chp says they found that person inside of the car. they say they don't know what caused the man drop off that road. but did say the car wasn't driving that fast. 2 people robbed a letter carrier of their postal keys in broad actually have surveillance video showing when it happened. take a look. this was a little after 12, 30 in the afternoon thursday on euclid avenue in oakland. investigators say 2 suspects approached the carrier as they were leaving a gated area and forcibly stole their keys. u.s. postal inspection service is offering a reward now up to $150,000 for any information leading to an arrest. well, happening tomorrow, residents on the peninsula will be able to exchange their guns for cash in south san francisco. the gun buyback program is

this half hour. the fact that we have 2 police officers now that have been shot after responding to a call overnight in san jose. >> right. it happened in the santa teresa neighborhood. kron four's will tran is live for us in san jose with the latest and we'll you've been following this story for us all morning. what can you tell us now? >> while more specifically, it happened right behind me at the motel. the extended stay america right behind me. you can see police officers to my right police officers to my left. they have been here since 10, 30 last night. the scene shut down to the public as they are still investigating it. there are dozens of police cars at this location as the extended stay turned into a crime scene at 10, 30 last night. now, let me show you video. this all started because the officers were responding to a disturbance call when all of a sudden they had no idea that the suspect opened fire on them. they returned fire on the suspect. ultimately, 3

people rushed to the hospital to officers as well as the suspect. here is the update. one officer treated and released for his or her injuries. the other officer life-threatening injuries at this time as well as the suspect. in fact, we've got video of him arriving at the hospital. one person, one officer actually had to be taken to a trauma center because that's how they have to specialize on his or her injuries at last check, critical condition but still alive from the injuries. as far as what happened, why the suspect opened fire on the 2 officers. well, that's still part in the investigation. and we're hoping to hear from the san jose police department in terms of a news conference a little bit later on this all happened off of burnout road. and san ignacio avenue. that's where the extended stay is across the street. there are plenty of shopping stores. there's a lucky's. there's a starbucks. so this is a very busy area for now. this area.

you can see a lot of civilian cars there. a lot of people are inside had no idea that officers are outside getting shot and appears right there, stephanie and james, look at that. officers are collecting evidence as we speak. back to you. >> all right. clearly a developing situation out there. we'll thank you for the update. >> we're also learning more about 2 security guards, one almost 60 years old. the other almost 80 who were attacked in downtown san francisco on wednesday morning. that attack was caught on camera just before 10, 30 near union square. watch. this from with >> and then days building a car and then. open the bill and then forced me and then we. >> 59 year-old bob morales says the man shown in this video you can see him attacking 2 of those victims. you can see a fellow one of bob's colleagues trying escape

the situation. the man who was involved, you can see him pushing morales to the ground before getting back into his car and driving off. now a person from the neighborhood stop by to check in on the 2 victims after hearing about this incident. >> those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know. >> morales says he has not experienced any problems while working in the area over the years as a security guard. police say this is an active investigation and are still working to figure out if it was a hate crime. >> well, an update now to a story we first brought you here on the kron 4 morning news thursday morning. some scary moments for a mother and her daughter who found themselves caught in the middle of a cross fire in oakland. right now, police are working to find out what led up to the shooting and who was responsible. but we spoke to the family of the victims to get there. reaction to what happened. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the ca while the gunfire was going.

yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off. >> all happened near 98 and cherokee. this was thursday morning right near bishop o'dowd high school. the woman's husband tells us that she tried to drive away when she heard gunfire in the area. but their suv was hit by another car speeding past and flip that suv onto its side. that woman and her daughter managed to crawl away from the vehicle virtually unharmed. so little bit of good news there. they were taken to the hospital as a precaution. police now investigating. but have so far not identified any suspects or a motive. anybody with information about what happened is asked to contact oakland police. meanwhile, redwood city police have arrested a man now suspected of harassing a teenage girl when she was walking home from school. police say 46 year-old neal porous drove up next to this 14 year-old on clinton street and asked he could hit on her. he also asked her to come closer to his car. he was

later tracked down by police. thanks to a neighboring home security cameras that captured his vehicle for us has since been arrested on suspicion of contacting a minor with intent to have. >> happening conquer based comic book store plans to give out thousands of free comics for their annual event. you know, flying colors. comics has been in the community for more than 3 decades, but their time at their current location has run forcefully to call has the story. >> the countdown to free comic book day will culminate with a big batch of flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord saturday. it's may the 4th be with you. star wars so there may be some characters from a galaxy far, far away. will also be an emotional day for joe field and his loyal customers who have been shopping in his store since it opened 35 years ago. >> his lease is up at the end of the year and he has not been offered or renewal. we hope there isn't a closing date. we hope that there's more of a transition day and

an accident earlier on southbound lanes of 8 80's. so just keep that in mind. it's already been cleared up, but we're still seeing those residual delays will be sunnyvale. seven-minute commute, taking a look over at the antioch to concord area. it's 30 minutes we normally see that can just sit around this hour every morning. and those who are in the area. if you're heading down over towards crockett things look good for you. once you get to crockett, you're on westbound 80 to get to the maze. 19 minute commute. not too bad. once you're in that area, if you decide to turn off and take the richmond, sandra fell bridge. it's a 12 minute commute over that things. look good there. that bay bridge. well, it's a parking lot per usual, but there's also a disabled car on the right hand side of the lane. if you're heading into the city. so 17 minute commute from the maze to fremont street, just keep that in mind. but at least you've got the gorgeous and beating down on you 70. oh bridge. 21 minute commute over that on to the peninsula. and lastly, that golden gate bridge coming in at a 19 minute commute. send it back to 2 of the best. michael, thank you so much. all right. now let's turn our attention

that we're following this morning out of san jose where we've received word that to san jose police officers were shot last night while they were responding to a disturbance call. we understand one of those officers has since been released from the hospital. so some good news there. but the other officer, as we understand it is still in critical condition. we have police at the hospital. we also have police still at the scene of that shooting. we're again. this was a disturbance call in the saint ignatius avenue area of san jose. they apparently came into contact with a person who at one point opened fire on them. they returned fire and when the dust settled, we have these 2 officers that were struck by bullets. this was all about 10, 30 or so last night. they say 2 officers again hit while the officers were firing back, that was in that exchange of gunfire that this all took place. police say again, at this point they're still monitoring the condition of that second officer. the

and myself, james fletcher beginning with that breaking news. 2 police officers shot after responding to a disturbance overnight in san jose. that's right. it happened in the santa teresa neighborhood. kron four's will tran is live in san jose with the latest on this. >> well, you've been following this story for us all morning long with the latest. >> 8 and a half hours into it and more officers actually coming to the scene. this is been shut down as the motel hotel. well, it's now a crime scene. let me step out of the way before i show you video that went down at around 10, 30 last night. let me give you live pictures coming from this location. so i will zoom in and it looks like the officers are focusing on 2 areas. you can see the front of the building, right? there are plenty of officers there. and then plenty of officers. let me just slide over a little bit here. and you can see officers in the parking lot right there. so they've been taking pictures
