>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> we begin this morning with breaking news to san jose. police officers are in the hospital after getting shot late last night. police say the officers were investigating a disturbance on san ignacio avenue when they came in contact with the man

who they say shot at them. this happened just after 10, 30. they say 2 officers were hit while other officers shot that back at that man. police say they took the officers and the man to a hospital. the police department closed down roads to investigate this shooting. on san ignacio we know that it is closed from vernell road to great oaks boulevard and westbound bernal road is closed from monterey road to san ignacio avenue. we will continue to follow this developing story and bring you the latest developments as that information comes into our news room. but first, lets go ahead and move things over to our weather with john tripp. let's get a quick check on that weather page that. are looking at whether out there today that it's going to be fairly pleasant. >> it is definitely a day of change before the rainfall arrives tomorrow today. still holding on to those upper 70's, though, and still staying dry for another day. this is your view outside of pure 15 right now, not the

breezy this morning, a little bit of a breeze through that, though, and certainly not the foggiest. we are seeing some mid-level cloud cover that is sifted back through. so today is going to be mostly sunny to partly cloudy, depending on where you're at. as far as winds go. wind gusts at the coastline around 20 to 30 miles per hour. we are seeing some clear skies out there this morning. temperatures in the 50's not a bad way to start your friday. as of alluded to today is the last of these mild drier days before we get to a big cool down tomorrow amid some showers as well. so go ahead. get out there. enjoy this friday to the fullest as we move into tomorrow, things are going to be changing changing really quickly. michael thomas is standing by with a look at the roads. what's the latest out there? >> hey, good morning, everyone. 502. is your time. taking a look at roads right now. things are actually looking fairly good. taking a look at some drive times. you can see if you're heading over towards the maze. everything is under 20 minutes crockett to the maze. 15 minutes, walnut creek to 5, 8, 11 minutes. castro valley to the

maze 13 minutes and injured to the maze. 10 minutes taking a look at those bridge is the bay bridge right now. it's only an 8 minute commute into the city. keep in mind they were doing construction. that is just starting to get cleared up. so they may still be on the bay bridge as you're heading into the city, clearing up those cones. i know the car behind me this morning when i was coming in actually, bailey missed one of those cones. so keep that in mind. and taking a look right now at the san mateo bridge. it's a 12 minute commute over that the richmond, sandra fell bridge 7 minutes to get over that. and that golden gate bridge right now, it's a 20 minute commute. they were dealing with a collision on the southbound lanes as you're entering in towards the city. spbut that should be cleared up within the next 10 to 15 minutes. stephanie, i'll send it over to you. michael, thank you so much. >> in the east bay, a hair stylist was arrested and accused of disturbing crimes conquer. police say the owner of chi hair salon committed several assaults, including rape kron four's. dan thorn reports from conquer.

>> investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. police say who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. my reaction is just, you know, ab so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children are kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than

children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron, 4 news. >> in the north bay, a second lawsuit was filed against benicia unified claiming the district swept teacher abuse out accusations rather under the rug. now, this new lawsuit which is similar to the first one looks to hold the district accountable for its alleged negligent hiring. a former teacher, matthew shelton. the suit filed by 3 additional use claims the district failed to report shelton abuse of its students. the alleged abuse, rather and concealed his actions to protect the district's reputation. shelton is charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. he is due in court for a preliminary hearing on monday. civil litigation is not scheduled until september. mill valley

teacher arrested and charged with child crimes was found dead just one day later. police say 55 year-old michael smith worked for the mill valley school for about 6 years before he was put on administrative leave and arrested tuesday. he was booked into jail but was bailed out. then wednesday evening, smith was found floating in the water about 2 and a half miles away from the drakes beach parking lot. police say he was out surfing when he washed out to sea. but authorities are still investigating the cause of death. a man is dead after getting into a car crash on southbound highway 101, north of west side road in healdsburg yesterday afternoon, the california highway patrol says the driver veered to the right off the roadway went down an embankment and rolled. the chp says they found the man dead inside of the car. they say they don't know yet what caused the victim to drive off the road, but did say that the car was not traveling at a fast speed. developing news now, tensions boiling over at

u c berkeley where pro-palestinian protesters clashed with people there to support israel. the palestinian supporters say that they've been negotiating with the university, but the 2 sides have not come to an agreement that would end the occupation on campus among their demands. they want the university to financially divest from israeli interests and condemn what they say the israelis are doing to the people of gaza. they also want students and teachers to be allowed to speak freely about the conflict. as for the actual encampment itself, this is located outside of sproul hall on campus. thanks have largely been peaceful until wednesday night. when counter protesters say that they had an israeli flag stolen from them, which led up to a fight. >> person not from the site signed a kind of approach to design a scoop in so students formed a line between the 2 groups tried try to keep tensions numbers. still the person managed to grab a israeli flag and touched on so there was a little scuffle as they fought to the

>> the university of california police departments as an attempted robbery of a flag and physical assault happened just before 7 on wednesday night. that led to 3 people being injured. we reached out to the university about this in a statement they say officers are investigating and they condemned violence of any kind between demonstrators. meantime, more than 5,000 uc alumni from all 10 campuses signed a letter pledging to stop donations. the letter asked university officials to divest from the u.s. military and companies from what the organizers behind they're calling. this is israel's oppression of palestinians. the teachers and campbell are asking leaders of the campbell union high school district to use money to keep staff from leaving. teachers say with the area's high cost of living and ongoing teacher shortage, the district can't afford to lose any more teachers. >> and so i can hope that the teacher can for the district reverse the teacher people

were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improved classes for english language learners. we're learning more about 2 security guards, 106, tz or 60 years old, rather. and the other almost 80. and they were attacked in downtown san francisco wednesday morning. that was caught on camera just before 10, 30 near union square. watch this. >> this funding and then days will be a car. and then. the open that those most need and then we. >> 59 year-old bob or alice says the man shown in this video attacked him and went after his friend, a fellow

guard pushing him to the ground before getting back in his car and driving off and from the neighborhood stop by to check in on the victims after hearing about this incident. >> those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know. >> mirallas who is again, of course, shown in the video. he's one of the people being assaulted here. he says he has not experienced any problems while working in this area over the years. police say this is an active investigation and are still working to figure out. but this was a hate crime. in the east bay. police looking for help finding them and that they believe killed 2 people at a hotel in livermore. this is jan stun vasquez of oakland. they say that vazquez should be considered armed and dangerous. investigators tell us they found a man and woman shot dead in a room at the look into in near 5.80, last saturday. and they say that's because new one of the victims. take a good while.

preparations are underway in the south bay and san jose. police are taking a different approach to the festivities after facing some backlash last year. people accuse the department are a number of community members, rather accused the department of not communicating road closures ahead of the event in 2023, law enforcement blocked off highway ramps near the parade because they where we understand that they thought that the event would lead to vandalism and potential sideshows and many call many in the community called the closures and the reasons for them they they claim that it was cultural and racial bias. >> opportunity to talk to the public about some things that occurred last year that we want try remedy this year. we have a couple of closures that are going to curl. that includes only one freeway off ramp closure, which will be 6.88 king road will be on may 5th specifically for a parade. that is the situation i did that we have anticipated preplanned freeway road closures. >> the department plans to

close down barack obama boulevard and west santa clara street for a car show from 09:00am 04:00pm tomorrow. and that same day, the salsa festival is also happening, which is causing a one-lane closure of south market street surrounding plaza de cesar chavez from one to 09:00pm. still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, the local police department says violent crime is going down. >> we take a look at the new data released by the department and what city leaders say the city still leaders say the city still needs to improve on. i'm adding downy unstopables to my wash.

hear some interesting things to know. bay bridge lights are set to make a return early in spning 2025. illuminates the arts nonprofit behind those iconic lights. they say that the new light display will feature around 50,000 led zahn be visible from both sides of the bridge. is that pablo awarded seen as pizza. the city small business of the year award. the spanish south pizzeria is located on 23rd street and has been in business for more than 3 decades. plus it had been in chihuahua was found living under a round table. pizza novato a month ago. well, they finally been adopted by the owners of the store. they name hepher oni. it's a great name and the giants beat the red sox 3 to one yesterday. the giants start a new series on the road today playing the phillies. first pitch is at 3.40. all right. welcome back. thank you so much for joining us this morning. >> let's get another check of the weather with john shrable.

good morning, john. good morning, stephanie, great to have you here. this early for it start. we are looking outside at what is some relatively clear conditions right now and we are going to be looking at skies today that do stay dry tomorrow and not so much anymore. our next storm system is still well to the north of us. but you can clearly see that shield of cloud cover that center of low pressure is incurring some cooler air that pushes on in tomorrow and results in some dramatic changes can see the cold front diving in overnight tonight into tomorrow morning making for the last of our warm days today before our big cool down tomorrow. let's time it out for you. future cast does show consistently dry skies today. a gradual increase in cloud cover leading into the afternoon with partly to mostly cloudy skies into the early evening. still dry into our overnight hours tonight. but into tomorrow morning during pre-dawn hours, we'll start to see a few sprinkles here. and there. and then as the sun

comes up tomorrow, that rainfall really starts to dive in. most model runs at this point are super consistent that were most of us anyways around three-quarters of an inch of rainfall. this is going to be right on par with our averages for the entire month of may. so this is a fairly significant system to be talking for this time of year from the bay to the sierra. also, some snowfall up winter weather advisory goes into effect tomorrow morning at 11:00am for elevations above 5,000 feet in the sierra down through mammoth lakes, yosemite national park and up to lake tahoe as well. what's the impact here? what we are going to see. snow packed roadways, snow levels dropping as low as 5,000 feet anywhere between a half a foot to a foot of snowfall above 7,000 feet. and the very crest of the sierra could see isolated amounts even more than that at those very highest of elevations. so quite the switch up just around the corner. your first weekend of may is coming along with the wintry punch. today, though, your first friday of the new

month. not so bad. we do have daytime highs in the 60's to 70's. nobody's quite getting up to the 80 degree mark today. so a little cooler than yesterday, but not a huge drop just yet free month, sitting at 70 to dublin, 73, oakland and berkeley at 70 degrees. concord, among our warmer spots along with pittsburgh and fairfield at 78 vacaville. and didn't he each at 79? looking ahead, tomorrow's temperatures down in the low 60's at the warmest rainfall likely through the day sunday. we clear things out really quickly, but we stay cool. next week. temperatures very comfortable with 60's to 70's for your highs. >> thanks, john. and good morning, everyone. it is 5.18, taking a look at your roads right now. everything looks pretty good. for the most part. we're going to be some drive times very quickly here. livermore to dublin, 11 minutes, dublin to fremont. 14 minutes. san leandro to milpitas 20 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. 6 minutes taking a look over the antioch area. right now. it's only a 15

minute commute from antioch to concord. this is normally a congested area. even this early in the morning. so it looks good for friday. those who are using westbound 80 crockett to the maze only a 16 minute commute. once you are in that area, if you decide to turn off to that richmond center fell bridge. it's only 7 minute commute after that. and then if you are taking that bay bridge right now, it's a 9 minute commute into the city from the maze. those metering lights are not on quite yet. taking a look from dublin to fremont. it's a 14 minute commute there. and checking in on that san mateo bridge. you can see it's a 12 minute commute over that. so things look pretty good for the most part there. taking a quick look over in the south bay right now, morgan hill to san jose at 9 minutes and that 101. it is a total of the 28 minute commute from san jose to menlo park. i will send it back to stephanie for michael. thank developing news now amid the campus protests, republicans in sacramento are calling for the state to take action against university administrators. >> who they say have not done enough to stop the violence.

it's outrageous and it's unacceptable that we've allowed this chaos to ensue over weeks. ministration didn't just allow this. >> in some cases, i believe they've been complicit. you look at the the fencing barricades that they put out. you look at the latitude and the amount of damage they allowed these protesters to do, you know, have the right to spray paint buildings, break windows, damaged the the facilities. >> and hold other student. we just don't have that right >> republicans are demanding the state cut budget funding for administrators who have stood by the demonstrators. all major democratic leaders have yet to provide a direct public response to the republicans proposal. but governor gavin newsom's office did send us this statement saying, quote, the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend to inciting violence, vandalism or lawlessness on campus. those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions, including

through criminal prosecution suspension or expulsion. president joe biden is speaking out about the wave of protests also sweeping across the nation. police arresting now more than 2000 pro-palestinian protesters in recent weeks. our washington correspondent raquel martin joins us live now with more on how the president is handling all of this. good morning. will the president definitely trying to strike a balance on one hand? >> he acknowledges that protester a bedrock of the country, but is unequivocally condemning those turning to violence and vandalism. >> order must prevent president joe biden is hoping to simmer escalating protests across college campuses to right to protest but not the right to cause chaos in his first formal speech on the matter thursday, the president condemned those who turned to violence to voice their disapproval of israel's military campaign. in goes up, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and

graduations. not of this is a peaceful protest. but on capitol hill, republicans like missouri senator eric schmitt say the remarks come too late. it's despicable. took him a week to start talking about this. south dakota republican senator john thune says he wants the president to go further to protect jewish students who say they've been targeted since the start of the war frayed. >> to walk across their own campuses. this week the house passed legislation to expand the legal definition of anti-semitism. is a big win >> for jewish americans. >> new york republican congressman mike lawler who led the charge says doing so will help the department of education crackdown on allegations of jewish hate on campus. the bill passed with broad bipartisan support, but opponents including jewish democratic new york congressman jerry nadler, warren, the expanse of language could be weaponized speech. that is critical of israel alone. >> does not constitute unlawful discrimination.

letter carrier of their postal keys in the middle of the day. >> let's take a look at surveillance video of that incident happened just after 12:30pm, in the afternoon thursday on euclid avenue in oakland, at least 2 suspects approached the carrier as they were leaving a gated area where security camera shows the group forcibly stole that postal workers. keys. >> the u.s. postal inspection service is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction suspects. bay area, air quality officials are accusing tesla of air quality violations. they say tesla is emitting harmful contaminants into the air. the chemicals are coming from paint shop operations at tesla's fremont facility, according to authorities. now officials are seeking an abatement order to require tesla come up with a plan to lower emissions if it moves forward, the public will be able to attend a hearing and comment on those alleged violations. the city and

>> welcome back. 5.29 this friday morning. it's get another check of the weather for john shrable. good morning, john. hey, good morning staff and we are looking at a day today that it's not going to be bad in the least bit tomorrow. i will call that could be different. we see a much colder saturday and some rainfall just around the corner today. none of that just yet. we're looking at pier 15 right here. a modest breeze whipping through the golden gate right now, not talking a lot of fog this morning. so if you are taking to the roads getting that morning commute in not a lot to worry about definitely blustery winds still continues for the coast, though. and some pockets of fog, especially in the north bay coastline. temperatures are right now in the 40's to 50's alameda in hayward at 55 degrees. oakland in fremont at 53 while petaluma and santa rosa at 49 later on today. do look for to daytime highs

similar to yesterday's no 80's today, but still warm tomorrow. i will be calling it warm in the least bit talking all the changes this weekend. still ahead, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. it is 5.31. taking a look at your drive times right now. everything seems to be looking good for this friday morning crockett to the may 16 minutes. walnut creek to 5, 80 12 minutes. castro valley tummies 14 minutes. stanley under to the maze 10 minutes. so if you're still in bed, you could probably stay in bed for about another 5 minutes before you head out. once you get towards that mazen, you're trying to get over that bay bridge. right now. only going to be a 10 minute commute. you can see those metering lights are not on quite yet. normally they are by this time, a look at the san mateo bridge. 13 minutes. we are seeing a little bit of sluggishness go on there, but not too bad. look at the richmond. sandra fell bridge 7 minutes. and as you can see, there's no cars driving over that, right. and how lastly, a look at the golden gate bridge. it's a 19 minute commute into the city this morning. stephanie, i'll send it over to michael, thank you so much. breaking news

now, 2 police officers are in the hospital after being shot overnight in san jose. >> the officers were responding to a disturbance in the santa teresa neighborhood. kron four's will tran is live in san jose with the latest on this bill. what are you seeing? >> there is still a massive sea near where police officers still investigating. it appears it happened right behind me at the extended stay. america. that's where the focus seems to be. no. let me show you video of what went down at around 10, 30 last night. here's the latest update. you mentioned 2 officers were shot they were taken to 2 separate hospitals in san jose. we do know that one officer was treated for moderate injuries and released another with life-threatening injuries at this time. so they were responding to a disturbance call trying to talk to somebody when all of a sudden shots rang out. that's when the officers returned

fire altogether. 3 people were injured. 2 officers and one suspect. now, let me show you video of the hospitals that the officers were rushed into. we do know that one officer at this particular time, according to the san jose police department with life threatening injuries. the suspect also sustained injuries when the officers returned fire. that suspect is also in the hospital at this particular time. why that suspect opened fire on the officers in the first place that's still under investigation. this is all happening at the extended stay off of a burn all road and san ignacio avenue. so it is shut down this a huge shopping complex around this area and people are not allowed to go down this road, of course, until the officers finished with their investigation, we hope to hear more from the san jose police department has the morning moves on. but we're talking right now about 7 hours into the investigations.

so lots going on. they don't anticipate wrapping up anytime soon. but the good news, stephanie, those 2 officers, yes, they were hit by gunfire, but at least at this very moment, they are still alive with one officer actually released a short time back to you. >> all right. well, thank you so much for staying on top of this developing story for us. we appreciate it. an update now to a story we first brought you on the kron 4 morning news yesterday morning. some scary moments for a woman and her daughter who found themselves caught in the crossfire in oakland. and now police are working to find out what led to the shooting and one who is responsible for this. we spoke with the father and has been involved. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off. >> this happened near 98 and cherokee thursday morning near bishop o'dowd high school. the woman's husband tells us she tried to drive away from those

gunshots, but their suv was hit by another car and ended up flipping on its side. the woman her daughter managed to crawl away from their vehicle largely unharmed. they were taken to a hospital just as a precaution. investigators say police are investigating have but have so far not identified suspects or motive. anyone with information is asked to please get in touch with oakland police. and oakland is embracing some positive trends when it comes to crime, at least according to recent data from the police department which shows a violent crime has dropped kron four's stasio impacts that data and what still needs to be improved upon. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating. we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in

2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. rape was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless per team looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like. getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city and the shape that is it that

that's bishop bob jackson with acts, gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is is where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> so many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have you that the numbers could could skyrocket. james deadly, a criminal justice professor at san francisco state university and former san francisco police deputy chief says while data shows a downward trend now it doesn't predict the future. >> and that can be troubling. in the meantime, joe, she says that they will continue to work hard and help oakland become better. >> we also realize that a large part of community safety is how people are feeling and

what perception and so i would say that we a long way to go in both of those arenas to recess. stasio kron. 4 news. >> alameda police are warning residents about a scam targeting permit applicants. scammers they say are pretending to be city workers and calling victims to request payment for permit fees. these scammers say it is a required part of the process in order to process the victim's request. this city of alameda says that they never call applicants to request payments over the phone. police say it's important to never provide your personal information over the phone and to please get in touch with the city to verify and the calls that might seem questionable. the fire started inside a three-story building in san francisco's hill neighborhood yesterday morning. video shows flames shooting out of the roof of the residents on jackson street near leavenworth. officials say the fire started at around 8 o'clock. they say the building has a commercial space on the ground floor and

2 floors of residential units above it. no word on where the fire started yet. no major injuries. but officials say 2 neighbors reported having some breathing issues due to smoke. the cause is under investigation. well, for more than a year, the sparkling lights of this art installation on the bay bridge have been dark. this is previous video, but these lights will be turned back on in the organization behind them promises that that installation will be even better than before kron four's. catherine heenan brings us the latest on this. >> we think we can do this without being a driver distraction. actually think it might even increased driver attention. but but imagine coming into san francisco. have your friends into our cities reported the public art. that's 1.8 miles long. seen the city of san francisco open on the other side of it. we're very, very excited. >> the last time we saw ban davis, he was the guy officially turning the lights off. that was march of last year after more than a decade,

john. and good morning, everyone. taking a look right now at your roads. it is 5.48. their i am. >> take a look at some drive times you can see right now we're only seeing one major delay and that's on 8.80. it's a 24 minute commute from san leandro to milpitas. there's an accident near industrial parkway, but it should be cleared up in the next 15 to 20 minutes or so. but right now, livermore to dublin, 11 minutes, dublin to fremont 14 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. 6 minute taking a look at any act that morning commute. we always see congested still at 15 minutes to get to concord from there. so not too bad. westbound 80 right now. crockett to the maze. it's a 15 minute commute. once you get over to that means that shouldn't be too bad. and if you're turning off at the richmond, sandra fell bridge right now at 7 minute commute over that there's that bay bridge. you can see the sun slowly starting to come up 11 minutes to get into the city from the mazes. metering lights are on at this point and 8.80, as i mentioned, there is an accident near on the southbound lanes of industrial parkway. so keep
