with us tonight on kron. 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. our top story tonight is out of the east bay where a hairstylist is under arrest, accused of disturbing crimes occurred. police say the owner of chi hair salon committed several assaults, including rape. >> kron four's dan thorn reports now from concord. investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. >> police say who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. my reaction is just, you know, app. so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his

styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children are kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> tensions have boiled over at u c berkeley where pro-palestinian protesters have clashed with people there to support israel. these palestinian supporters say they have been negotiating with the university, but the 2 sides just have not been able to come to an agreement. they

would end the occupation on campus among their demands. they want the university to financially divest from israeli interests, condemn what the israeli military has been doing to the people of gaza. also, they want students and teachers to be allowed to speak freely about the conflict without fear of punishment. as for the actual encampment outside sproul hall. well, things have been largely peaceful, at least until last night when counter-protesters showed up and they had an israeli flag stolen from them leading to a fight. >> person not from the site signed a kind of approach to design a scoop in so students formed a line between the 2 groups tried try to keep tensions down. but still the person managed to grab a israeli flag and touched on so there was a little scuffle as they fought to the fight. >> according to the university of california police department and attempted robbery of a flag and physical salt did occur just before 7 o'clock last night leading to 3 people being injured. we

reached out to the school for comment about the situation. in a statement, they say police are currently investigating the incident and they condemn any violence of any kind between protesters and counter-protesters. >> meantime, in southern california, this is what's left behind after police tore down the encampment set up on ucla is campus stay went in around 3 o'clock this morning. reports of flash bangs and rubber bullets. we're seeing all over social media, at least 200 people were arrested overnight at ucla. that brings the nationwide total of arrests connected to college campus demonstrations to more than 2000 since mid april. chaotic scenes playing out early this morning with officers in riot gear there, ucla workers cleaning up the encampment having to haul away sheets of plywood used to build a barricade. also sweeping trash from graffiti, covered steps. meantime, more than 5,000 uc alumni from all

10 campuses have signed a letter pledging to stop donations asking university officials to divest from the u.s. military and companies profiting from what they say is israel's oppression of palestinians and stay with kron 4 on air and online for the latest info. >> on the israel-hamas war from campus, protests to the war itself. and the latest on the hostages you can head to our website kron 4 dot com. >> happening now, westbound highway 37 between the lay and sonoma county is closed tonight. crews say they're going to be working on some repairs to the road until about 4 o'clock tomorrow morning. >> better get those repairs done now because the dry weather we've been experiencing is only going to be with us another day or so before things start to change. as we look live here at the bay bridge toll plaza and 2 westbound lanes are closed for some emergency repairs there on the bay bridge. caltrans says those lanes will reopen

tomorrow morning. but as you mentioned, like any work that needs to be done needs to be done. >> ah, by tomorrow, because, lawrence, as getting a little rain, yeah. get back to the rain and much colder temperatures around the bay area. the temperatures maybe drop a good 10, maybe 20 degrees from what we've been experiencing the last couple of days and it's been such a nice week of weather, but now we're starting to see some changes. some little fog moving along the coastline, looking out toward the golden gate bridge. you can see down the left-hand part of your screen. some of that fog beginning to creep on shore. and that's a sign that ridge of high pressure beginning to weaken a little bit more of a sea breeze kicking in. so we've got more of that on the way. the temperatures around the bay area right now generally in the 50's, even some mid 60's still pretty mild in concord for this time of night. but what changes are in the works. the seabreeze kicking in, of course, a little fog along the coastline today that help to cool down the temperatures a little bit. but even a bigger change on the horizon. there's your next cold front coming right out of the gulf of alaska. so that contains with that not only cold air, but a lot of moisture is going to tap a little some tropical moisture roll on shore. so as we head

through the day tomorrow, starting out with some sunshine in most spots except the coastlines fog. then the cloud cover really going to ramp up late in the day. you can see a lot of fog moving on shore should be a dry day. but after that, everything changes for the weekend. we'll have that weekend forecast. coming up the few minutes. sounds good. thank you, lawrence. new tonight at 10 o'clock or 11, we should say teachers in campbell. are asking leaders of the campbell union high school district to keep funds or to use funds to keep staff from leaving. they gathered tonight at the district's board meeting. they say the area's high cost of living and ongoing teacher shortage. the district simply can't afford to lose any more teachers. >> hope that the teacher can for the district reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary

and their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improves classes for english language learners. >> tonight was the first of 12 monthly block parties scheduled in san francisco. they're called downtown first thursdays. thousands were in attendance tonight. as you can see here, it was packed second street closed to vehicles from market to howard this evening. the event featured vendors live music and a whole lot of people. >> the reason why this is important is because we need to get people to create new memories downtown, to remember how close it is and how easy it is to get there and how much there is to offer for folks. >> the festivities wrapped up around 10 o'clock this evening. cinco de mayo preparations are underway in the south bay and san jose. police are taking a different approach to the festivities after. >> facing backlash last year, lots of people accused the

department of not communicating road closures ahead of cinco de mayo last year, law enforcement blocked off highway ramps near the parade because the police department felt the event would lead to vandalism and sideshows. many people called the closures in the reasons for them an example of cultural and racial bias. opportunity to talk to the public. >> about some things that occurred last year that we want try remedy this year. we have a couple of closures that are going to curl. that includes only one freeway off ramp closure, which will be 6.88 king road will be on may 5th specifically for a parade. that is the situation to other than that, we have anticipated preplanned freeway road closures. >> the department will be closing down barack obama boulevard and west santa clara street for a car show from 09:00am to 04:00pm on may 4th. that is saturday and taking place that same day. >> is this also festival that event is forcing a one-lane closure of south market street

years in prison. 70 year-old jerry boylan was sentence for criminal negligence in that 2019 labor day tragedy. prosecutors say he failed to have sufficient fire drills and crew training. they also say he did not try to fight the flames or attempt to rescue those trapped victims. 33 passengers and one crew member were killed. boylan is set to begin serving his sentence in july. >> today we're learning more about 2 security guards, one almost 60, the other, almost 80 who were attacked in downtown san francisco yesterday morning. the attack was caught on camera just before 10, 30 near union square. >> this funding and then days will be a and then. open the bill and in most and then we. >> 59 year-old bob morales says thh suspect attacked him, then went after his friend and fellow security guard. a 78 year-old pushing him to the ground before got back in his car and drove off man who is

from the neighborhood stop by to check on them after hearing about the incident. >> those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know. >> both morales sen the bethel say they have not experienced any problems while working in the area over the years. police say this is still an active investigation. they're trying to determine if this was a hate crime. >> scary moments as a woman and her daughter found themselves caught in the crossfire in oakland. now police are working to find out what led to this shooting and who's responsible. we spoke with the shaking up father and husband. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off. >> it all happened near 98th and cherokee this morning. according to the woman's husband, she tried to drive

away, but their suv was hit by another car and flipped on its side. the woman and her daughter managed to crawl out from their vehicle virtually unharmed. they were taken to the hospital just as a precaution. police are investigating but have so far not identified any suspects or motive. anyone with information is asked to contact oakland pd. >> 2 people robbed a letter carrier of their postal keys in the middle of the day happened just after 12, 30 today on euclid avenue in oakland. at least 2 suspects approached the carrier as they were exiting a gated area and forcibly stole the keys. the u.s. postal inspection service is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for info that leads to an arrest and conviction of the people responsible. >> a man is dead. 3 children recovering tonight after a crash on a south san jose freeway. chp says the driver was speeding on state route. 85 last night when he veered into the median and struck the guardrail. the driver died at

the scene. those kids ages 8, 4, 2, were taken to the hospital with just minor injuries. investigators say the driver and the kids are from east palo alto. >> valley teacher arrested and charged with child crimes has been found dead. now just the couple days later, police say 55 year-old michael smith worked for the mill valley school district for about 6 years before he was put on administrative leave and arrested tuesday, he was booked into jail but bailed out. then last night smith was found floating in the water about 2 and a half miles away from the drakes beach parking lot. police say he gone out surfing when he washed out to sea. but authorities are still investigating his exact cause of death. >> air quality officials are accusing tesla of persistent air quality violations. they say tesla's emitting harmful contaminants into the atmosphere. the chemicals are coming from pay chop

now. this is a pretty impressive front, especially for this time of year. just developing now and approaching california. so going to be a nice soaker out there. we'll see that rain coming in. not tomorrow, though. looks like a nice day for tomorrow. those clouds will be on the increase late in the day. and then here comes all that green mass rolling on in. and that's that rain pushing in the bay area and we'll see some pretty heavy rainfall, i think through the morning hours and then drying out a little bit toward the afternoon to turning more scattered showers, a much cooler temperatures all around the bay area. how about rain amounts? yeah, we're going to get close to maybe an inch of rain even in the urban areas that is very, very impressive for this time of year above average for the entire month, you'll see higher amounts across some of the coastal ranges. as far the advisories for snow. yeah, we're looking at that this weekend. if you're traveling in the high country, but you better be prepared, we're going to not only a few inches of snow. we're talking maybe a foot of snow, maybe even higher than that across some of the higher mountain peaks temperatures tomorrow generally cool along the coastline. you see those numbers running the 50's out toward the beaches. warmer as you make your way down the peninsula. temperatures warming up in the 70's in some

spots, especially in the south bay. but over the next couple days yet, here we go. what a drastic change in temperatures. rain on saturday drying out on cinco de mayo. then warmer weather. middle of next week. >> thank you, lawrence. for more than a year now, the sparkling lights of the bay bridge have been turned off due to broken strands and not enough funding to fix them. but the organization behind the art installations as the lights are coming back and when they do the co-founder of eliminate says they'll be even brighter than before. >> we're also going to double the number of led so we're still the western span and the northern edge of the bay bridge. but we're going to wrap around the table with a note on both sides so we can deliver a static equity around the bay. you know, really not just to the pet houses in san francisco, the north bay, but, you know, all the way down into the bay view, hopefully over the oakland, alameda berkeley, richmond and the new emerging neighborhoods of treasure island and why the eye? >> if all goes well, they will be up by march of next year. eliminate says it is close to reaching 11 million dollars in
