>> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> good evening. thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis. our top story tonight out of the east bay where the stylist is under arrest tonight, accused of some disturbing crime conquer. police say the owner of chi hair salon committed several assault, including rape kron four's. dan thorn reports from concord. investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. >> police say committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. that's my reaction is just, you know, app. so absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye

was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children are kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> is still in custody on $250,000 bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron, 4 innings in berkeley. tensions are boiling over uc berkeley where pro-palestinian protesters >> have clashed with people there to support. israel are grant lodes is here in the

studio with more on the tent encampment on campus. it keeps growing. grant getting bigger and bigger. vicki and ken, these palestinian supporters say they've been negotiating directly with the university leaders, but the 2 sides have not come to an agreement that would end the occupation on campus. you see all the tents lined up among their demands. they want the university to financially divest from israeli interests, condemn what the israelis are doing to the people of gaza militarily. also, they want students and teachers at. cal to be allowed speak freely about the conflict without fear of punishment. as for the actual encampment outside sproul hall. well, things have been largely peaceful until last night when counter-protesters gotten israeli flags stolen from them leading to a fight. >> the person not from the site has signed a kind of approach to design a scoop in so students formed a line between the 2 groups tried try to keep tensions down. but still the person managed to

grab a israeli flag and touched on so there was a little scuffle as they fought to the fight. >> tensions couldn't be kept down. according to the uc police department and attempted robbery of a flag and physical assault happened just before 7 o'clock last night leading to 3 people getting injured. we reached out directly to the university about that israeli flag incident. in a statement they say police are currently investigating and they say they condemn violence of any kind between protesters and counter-protesters. ken and vicki, back to you. >> in southern california, this is what's left behind after police tore down encampment set up on ucla campus. they went in about 3 o'clock this morning. flash bangs and rubber they were seen all over social media. chp says that hundreds of people were arrested. that brings the nationwide total of arrest to more than 2000 since mid april. meantime, over 5,000 uc alumni from all 10

campuses has signed a letter pledging to stop donations asking university officials to divest from the u.s. military and from companies profiting from what they say, israel's oppression palestinians. amid the campus protests. >> republicans in sacramento are calling for the state to take action against university administrators who they say have not done enough to stop the violence. it's outrageous. >> and it's unacceptable that we've allowed this chaos to ensue over weeks. ministration didn't just allow this in some cases. i believe they've been complicit. you look at the the fencing barricade that they put out. you look at the latitude and the amount of damage they allowed these protesters to do, you know, have the right to spray paint buildings, break windows, damaged the the facilities. >> and hold other student. >> we just don't have that right.

>> republicans are demanding the state cut budget funding for administrators who stood by the protesters. all major democratic leaders have yet to provide a direct public response to the republican proposal. but governor gavin newsom's office did send us this statement saying, quote, the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend to inciting violence, vandalism or lawlessness on campus. those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions, including through criminal prosecution suspension or expulsion. stay kron 4 on air and online for the latest information on the campus protest. you can head to our website kron 4 dot com. happening now. westbound highway 37 between vallejo. >> and sonoma county is close to cruz say that they're going to be working on repairs and tell 4 o'clock in the morning. and we want to show you a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. 2 westbound lanes heading into the city will be closing up for repairs pretty soon. it starts at 11 o'clock.

less than an hour account. ran says they expect to reopen those lanes at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning. well, it has been such a nice weekend weather around the bay area, but things about to change. i think starting tomorrow. notice a change in the weather early on that you got your wake-up weather. is that patchy fog? >> likely to make a return to the bay area, at least along the coastline, mostly clear inside the bay and the valleys. temperatures going to be the 40's in the 50's. well, we're going to start to clear things out, though, early in those temperatures warming up in the bay and many of the valleys to, in fact, by the time we get to 10 o'clock, we'll see a lot of 60's across the board. but big changes are on the way. some rain. the forecast for the weekend. if your tenant, 10 forecast coming up the few minutes. >> the captain of the boat that caught fire near santa cruz island and killed. 34 people has been sentenced now to 4 years in prison. 70 year-old jerry boylan was sentenced for criminal negligence in the 2019 labor day. tragedy. prosecutors say that he failed to have sufficient fire drills and crew training. they also say that he did not fight the

flames or even attempt to rescue trapped victims. 33 passengers and one crew member were killed. boylan is set to serve his sentence in july. >> fast food workers at to oakland locations are on strike workers at pollo loco on international in 25th near the fruitvale bart station and the mcdonald's on 14th and jackson near lake merritt in a complaint to count osha employees describe seeing rats nibbling on pieces of bacon and hamburgers that are ready to serve customers. they claim their bosses have failed to protect workers and customers from hazardous conditions. new at 10 teachers in campbell are asking leaders of the campbell union high school district. 2. >> use funds to keep staff from leaving. they gather tonight at the district's board meeting and they say with the area's high cost of living and ongoing teacher shortage, the district simply can't afford to lose any more. educators. >> and so i can hope that the teacher can for the district

reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and their unwillingness to consider incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improved classes for english language learners. tonight was the first of 12 monthly block parties scheduled in san francisco. here's what it looked like tonight. they're called downtown first thursdays. >> and thousands of people were in attendance. second street was closed to vehicles from market to howard street. the event featured vendors concerts live music and a lot of people. >> the reason why this is important is because we need to get people to create new memories downtown, to remember how close it is and how easy it is to get there and how much there is to offer for folks.

>> the festivities wrapped up just a few minutes ago at 10 o'clock. >> cinco de mayo preparations are underway in the south bay where it's always a supercharged party there and san jose police are taking a different approach this time to the festivities after facing backlash last year, residents accuse department of not communicating road closures ahead of the event in 2023. law enforcement blocked off highway ramps near the parade because they felt that the event would lead to vandalism and to shot sideshows. many call the closures an example of cultural and racial bias. >> opportunity to talk to the public about some things that occurred last year that we want try remedy this year. we have a couple of closures that are going to curl. that includes only one freeway off ramp closure, which will be 6.88 king road will be on may 5th specifically for a parade. that decision do i did that. we have anticipated preplanned freeway road closures. >> departments going to be closing down. barack obama boulevard and west santa clara street for a car show from 09:00am to 04:00pm on may 4th

in oakland and suv was left on its side after police say someone shot at it causing the driver to crash. investigators say a mother was behind the wheel. she was taking her daughter to school this morning. >> when they're caught in the middle of some kind of crossfire near 98th and cherokee avenue. according to the woman's husband, she tried to drive away, but their suv was hit by another car in flipped. >> pretty scary. knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car e% while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off. >> the woman and her daughter managed to crawl away from their vehicle. they were taken to the hospital but are expected to be okay. police are investigating but so far have not identified any suspects or a motive. >> surveillance video from a residence in oakland. it shows a usps mail carrier being

robbed. take a look video taken near euclid avenue and adams street this afternoon shows the suspect taking office something and been the carrier going investigators are offering $150,000 for information leading to an arrest of the suspect. despite these recent incidents in oakland, the police department says that violent crime is actually going down. coming up at 10, 30, we're going to take a look at the new data. the department is releasing and what leaders in oakland say the city still needs to do to improve in san francisco. police are looking for the man who attacked 2 security guards near union square kron four's gayle ong talked to one of the victims. >> bodner alice is back to work a day after he was assaulted by this man captured on surveillance video. standing the >> and then days will be a car. and then. open the bill and boost me and then morales says the suspect then went

after his friend, a 78 year-old man and pushed him to the ground before getting back in his car and driving on. why do you think someone would do that? >> i don't because made plans talking about the best will in the eu and then >> they opened the door. morales says the suspect parked his car in front of their workplace. both men are security guards who have worked here for decades. the incident happened just before 10, 30 wednesday morning in the area of post and kearny streets near union square. i'm just glad to hear that he's okay. serious battle stopped by to check on morales after hearing about the incident. those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and attack on the front of people. we know both morales and bethel say they have not experienced any problems all working in the area over the years kind like being in the financial districts. there is. there's some interesting characters that wander by been the. >> just keep on wandering by. so it's it has been much of an issue. >> and police say this is an active investigation are still

determining if this was a hate crime. gayle ong kron. 4 news man is dead and 3 children taken to the hospital after a crash on the south san jose freeway. >> the chp says that the driver was speeding on. i-85 when he veered into the median and then struck the guardrail. the driver died at the scene. the children ages 8 for into were rushed to the hospital with minor injuries. investigators say the driver and the children are from east palo alto. new at 10 tonight. police in gilroy are looking for this woman who they say stole $1900 worth of products. >> from an ulta beauty store. if you recognize said actually, it's 2 different women look similar. if you recognize him, you're asked to call gilroy. police. >> free comic book day is this saturday at the annual event it was founded at a comic book store in concord. but as our kron four's philippe reports for us tonight this year, the event is kind of bittersweet

because it will be the stores last. >> the countdown to free comic book day will culminate with a big batch flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord saturday. it's may the 4th be with you. star wars so there may be some characters from a galaxy far, far away. will also be an emotional day for joe field and his loyal customers who have been shopping in his store since it opened 35 years ago. >> his lease is up at the end of the year and he has not been offered or renewal. we hope there isn't a closing date. we hope that there's more of a transition day and that's what we're working towards as field explores options to settle down at another store front. he is proud of what his business has brought to the community how the comic book event. he found 23 years ago has spread worldwide. >> andrew has been purchasing comic springfield, most his life jones. fantastic. and he does so much not even just for that story. and he does a lot for the local community as well. and although this

topping out may be the 50's and the 60's thrones win. and it's going to be a lot cooler this weekend out the door right now. look, at least they his you see couple patches of fog on the coastline. that was the start of the change days. the fog started to move back along the coast, getting idea that ridge of high pressure started weekend. and now we've been seeing that patchy fog out there right now. not a ton of the yet, but we'll see more of it, especially as we head toward tomorrow afternoon, brewing out in the middle of the civic. here it is. you've got your next cold front. >> cold system coming out of the gulf of alaska that will be dropping in going to change your weather drastically. >> as we head toward the weekend, too. so let's see if we can time it out for as we take you through the night tonight. i'm not a bad night. just a couple of patches of fog along the coastline overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. and should be a really nice day. i think for most folks inside the bay and the valleys, you're really looking at nice afternoon. just a little bit cooler. what it was today by tomorrow afternoon, though, that front starts to move a little bit closer. that's going help the deep in the marine layer. and i think we'll see more fog surging on shore by tomorrow evening. and then as we get to

tonight, authorities are now investigating the death of a mill valley teacher. >> who was arrested and charge with cyle a child crimes. police say michael smith was found floating yesterday in the water about 2 miles from drakes beach parking lot. they say smith was out surfing when he was washed to see smith worked for the mill valley school for about 6 years before he was put on administrative leave when he was arrested. tuesday was booked in jail into jail. but he had bailed out.

>> a second whistleblower who raised concerns about boeing has died. joshua dean worked as a quality auditor at spirit aerosystems, which company that builds parts for boeing. dean was reportedly in good health until about 2 weeks ago when he was admitted to the hospital from a severe infection. he died on tuesday in 2022. dean raised concerns about manufacturing safety on some boeing planes. he was fired last year and his staff comes a 2 months after boeing whistleblower john barnett died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> bay area officials are accusing tests of air quality violations that keep happening over and over. they say tesla is emitting harmful contaminants into the atmosphere that are coming from paint shop operations at its fremont facility. officials are asking tesla to come up with a plan to lower those emissions. >> next up, new data shows violent crime in oakland is

numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. wright was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies

up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city in the shape. that is it that that's bishop bob jackson with acts, gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is it's where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have you that the numbers could could skyrocket. james deadly, a criminal justice professor at san francisco state university and former san francisco police deputy chief says while data shows a downward trend now it doesn't predict the future. >> and that can be troubling. in the meantime, joe, she says

that they will continue to work hard and help oakland become better. >> we also realize that a large part of community safety is how people are feeling and what perception and so i would say that we a long way to go in both of those arenas to recess. stasio kron. 4 news. >> police are asking for help in finding a man they believe killed 2 people at a hotel in livermore. this is johnston, vasquez of oakland. they say that vazquez should be considered armed and dangerous. investigators tell us that that they found the man and a woman shot dead in a room at like he took in your 5.80 last saturday. they say vasquez new one of the victims. anyone with information is being asked to call livermore police residents on the peninsula will be able to exchange your guns for cash this weekend. the gun buyback is being planned >> south san at the saints tails superior court building. that's on mission road.

most of the money came from wealthy donors. whether time now as we get a live look at right now at the bay bridge. yes, some light on it, but not the bridge site said i'm going back to our we've got to wait a few more months. chief meteorologist storms karl is here with more. that's okay. might not able to see him anyway with the fog later on tonight. and the storm clouds rolling in for the weekend. but hey, we've got a big change coming our way. no getting around that. so far, though, it looks like your friday will be a pretty decent day outside. still, if you're traveling out about, you're going want to be aware of the storm system rolling on in really affecting specially headed up in the high country where the sierra nevada, they're going to by. a lot of snow show you that just a moment out the door right now, though, we are kind of quiet out. there is going to not much in the way of fog, at least to the golden gate bridge or some fog along the coastline. now, temperatures kind of take a little bit of a hit today as we cool down just a little bit, especially along the coastline just inside the bay. as we saw a high-pressure weekend enough to allow more of a sea breeze and some of

that fog to moving along the coast ill. it was nice, warm day inland. 79 in concord, 78 in santa rosa. 77 in little ore. beautiful. 75 in s jose. 65 degrees in san francisco. 68 in oakland. but overnight tonight we'll see mostly clear skies in the interior valleys. still, some patchy fog linger along the coastline tomorrow. a mixture of some fog and some sun. i think we may see the fog in the morning on the coastline. then that may dissipate only to really return in the afternoon and picking up a push inside the bay. then cool rain is going to roll on in as we head in towards saturday drying out by sunday. but that's a pretty impressive storm specially for this time of year. that's rolling in to the gulf of alaska that could be pushing on shore. you see here on a long-range models tomorrow. yes, should be a nice day outside high pressure just holding on long enough to keep that storm system well to the north, then that drops in overnight tomorrow night into saturday morning. and you can see all the snow up in the sierra nevada to behind that. a few leftover scattered showers in the afternoon on saturday. then we dry things out on sunday. but yeah, i

mean, we're talking about a significant storm specially in the high country, not just a few inches of snow. we could see as much as a foot of snow across some of the higher high speaks, maybe even more like 18 inches. so it's going to be a significant storm headed in that direction. if you're traveling that way, anywhere in the sierra nevada, be prepared not only for the snow but the very cold temperatures that are going to a company that storm. so all that being said, let's enjoy our friday. temperatures in the 60's in san francisco. cool on the coast. and with that fog really kind of building in late in the day inside the bay of find more sunshine, temperatures could be down just a little bit, but so comfortable. 71 amount you 70's and much of the south bay tomorrow afternoon, east bay, you may not make the 80's, but you'd be in the mid to upper 70's by tomorrow afternoon. 76 in walnut creek about 74 end up and 75 degrees in napa. so looking good for tomorrow. the weekend, the up here we go again. that rain rolling on in pretty good soaker on saturday. dry out on sunday. but staying way cool compared to what we've seen. temperatures topping out in the 50's and low 60's, then slowly warming up toward the middle of next week and the

san jose state library exhibit celebrating south asian culture. >> well, the region known as south asia makes up 7 different countries in the library. curator here at the king library at san jose state says she wanted to include the religions in the foods that make up each of these cultures. she wanted to also consults with families living here in the bay area who also have ties to those countries. that's really cool. yeah. so these 2 things are lincoln. yes, and this is also from sri lanka up into the immersive martin luther king library at san jose state university in may. >> and you'll find an exhibit quite like no other. i think that could be very montr of roy is a library in here and she curated this exhibit on the 5th floor. it's titled south asians. >> of silicon valley, afghanistan, bangladesh, nepal, india, pakistan, sri lanka. he's or nearly all the countries that make up the region of south asia, a region roy says needs more attention in the south bay. she says at least 20% of people who live in santa clara county are of

south asian origin and more than 60% of international san jose state students are-from south asia, but yet so many of them have struggled to find a voice to find themselves being represented well in mainstream what was born and raised in india. and she says having other south asians like herself in silicon valley added more reason for this project. these things help them feel more empowered. the real represented actual case at this exhibit, you'll find the sports the food know what to do signing and the religion sick man will never will never see them determines it's part of their faith. roy highlights the for south asian religion seen in the south bay islam hinduism. jane isn't and buddhism. what we really enjoyed in our experience of doing this research in this project welcoming each community was 2 market in fremont is run by these 2 brothers a lot. i mean, i've made from afghanistan to the united states because my son is.
