this half hour, the city of oakland is seeing some positive trends when it comes to crime. >> the most recent oakland police statistics show that violent crime is actually dropped in several key categories. >> specifically homicides and assaults. proffers theresa has more now on what the city and community members are saying about it. all. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating where we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and

assault with firearms dropped 21%. wright was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like an enforcement but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like getting them on track. inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city in the shape that is is that that's bishop bob jackson with acts. gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the

data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is it's where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have you that the numbers could could skyrocket. james deadly, a criminal justice professor at san francisco state university and former san francisco police deputy chief says while data shows a downward trend now it doesn't predict the future. >> and that can be troubling. in the meantime, joe, she says that they will continue to work hard and help oakland become better. >> we also realize that a large part of community safety is how people are feeling and what perception and so i would say that we a long way to go in both of those arenas. theresa kron, 4 news.

>> mill valley teacher who was arrested and charged for child crimes was found dead. a day later. police say 55 year-old michael smith was found floating in the water about 2 and a half miles from the drakes beach parking lot. this was around 5.30, yesterday evening. police say smith was out surfing when he was washed out to sea. smith worked for the mill valley school for about 6 years before he was put on administrative leave when he was arrested on tuesday, he was booked into jail but had bailed out. authorities are now investigating his cause of death. >> at the campus protests across california, republican state lawmakers are calling for action against university administrators. gop lawmakers say have not done enough to stop the violence. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace has reaction from democratic state lawmakers. >> well, republicans here in the legislature say they are outraged with what they've seen on campus and they

believe the state can and should take more it's outrageous. >> and it's unacceptable that we've allowed this chaos to ensue over weeks. someone minority leader james gallagher sharing that message about the protests and violence and college campuses across the country. >> and right here in the golden state during a press conference, gallagher and senate minority leader brian jones made clear that they believe much of what's been taking place can and should have been stopped by university leaders. administration didn't just allow this in some cases. i believe they've been complicit. you look at the the fencing barricade that they put out. >> you look at the latitude and the amount of damage they allowed these protesters to do, you know, have the right to spray paint buildings, break windows, damaged the the >> and hold other student. we just don't have that right. he and his gop colleagues say college administrators who are found to have stood by were not properly stocked. campus

violence should face disciplinary action. >> specifically from a legislative standpoint, republicans are demanding the state cut budget funding for those administrators and rescind cal grant taxpayer funded scholarships for students convicted of violating the law during the unrest. >> we should not be given cal grant money state money to students or a in other people's rights. we've had jewish students who fear for their lives going to crops, but should not be the case on our university campuses. and there's got to be some accountability for that. these republicans say they have had private conversations and garnered some support behind the scenes from the democratic colleagues. but all major democratic leaders have yet to provide a direct public response to the republican proposal. >> governor gavin newsom's office directed us to his statement from wednesday saying the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend to inciting violence, vandalism or lawlessness on campus. those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions, including through criminal

prosecution suspension or expulsion. lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis who serves on the csu board of trustees and uc board of regents said people may disagree with israel's foreign policy but calling for destruction is unacceptable. it's time to end the chaos on our campuses. get our students back in school and join together with one voice to call for a return of the hostages and an end to the violence in gaza. the west bank and israel. and we reached out to the uc and cal state university system for comment but did not hear back as of news time reporting at the state capitol. a tom wallace kron. 4 news. >> bay area, air quality officials are accusing tesla of air quality violations that keep happening over and over. they say tesla's emitting harmful contaminants into the atmosphere. they're coming from paint shop operations at its fremont facility. officials are seeking an abatement order that would require tesla to come up with a plan to lower emissions. moves forward. the public will be able to attend the hearing

level dropping down to 5,000 feet. so that means the lake level you're likely to get some snow there. so be prepared for that. then you get upwards of 7,000 we're talking 6, maybe 12 inches of snow, maybe even more than that across some of the higher peaks. so i think if you're headed up there specially on saturday and sunday, there's a possibility some travel delays up there, unusually cold temperatures to go along with that and some gusty winds over 50 miles per hour across some of the mountain. crest. well, here we go. here's latest advisories you can see along the western of the sierra nevada, including the greater lake tahoe area that continues downward in the mammoth lakes areas. well, yosemite valley watch out. likely going to see some snow across those areas to looks pretty impressive as it starts to come onshore. this the same system that's likely to bring some rain. the bay area should be a dry day tomorrow if you want to get up there. but then after that, that cold snow moves in kind of picking up throughout the day on saturday, continuing as we head in towards sunday, then start to dry out after that. but boy, that's going to be a lot of snowy start to add it all up in. here we go. pretty impressive totals as we get through the weekend. maybe

week marks the start of asian american and pacific islander heritage month throughout the month of may. we're going highlight the bay area's diverse asian communities at san jose state and exhibit at the library is celebrating south asian culture. first, jack molmud reports. well, the region known as south asia makes up 7 different countries in the library. curator here at the king library at san jose state says she wanted to include the religions in the foods that make up each of these cultures. she wanted to also consults with families living here in the bay area who also have ties to those countries. >> that's really cool. yeah. so these 2 things are lincoln. yes, and this is also from sri lanka up into the immersive martin luther king library at san jose state university in may. >> and you'll find an exhibit quite like no other. i think that could be very montr of roy is a library in here and she curated this exhibit on the 5th floor. it's titled south asians. >> of silicon valley, afghanistan, bangladesh,

nepal, india, pakistan, sri lanka. these are nearly all the countries that make up the region of south asia, a region roy says needs more attention in the south bay. she says at least 20% of people who live in sonta clara county are of south asian origin and more than 60% of international san jose state students are from south asia, but yet so many of them have struggled to find a voice to find themselves being represented well in mainstream what was born and raised in india. and she says having other south asians like herself in silicon valley added more reason for this project. these things help them feel more empowered that we are represented actual case at this exhibit, you'll find the sports the food know what to do signing and the religion sick man will never will never see them determines it's part of their faith. roy highlights the for south asian religion seen in the south bay islam hinduism. jane isn't and buddhism. what we really enjoyed in our experience of doing this research in this project was how welcoming each
