>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> tonight at 6, we are hearing from one of 2 security guards who was attacked while on the job in san francisco. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm ken wayne. this happened just before 10, 30 yesterday morning near union square kron four's gayle ong joins us here in the studio with the details. scale. >> ken and vicki, victims,

longtime security guards and that neighborhood, one of the men i spoke with says he never saw the suspect before. and this attack was unprovoked. san francisco police are searching for the suspect. >> bodner alice is back to work a day after he was assaulted by this man captured on surveillance video. funding >> and then days will be a car. and then. open the bill and then boost me and then morales says the suspect then went after his friend, a 78 year-old man and pushed him to the ground before getting back in his car and driving on. why do you think someone would do that? i don't because made plans talking about the best will in the eu. >> and then they opened the door. morales says the suspect parked his car in front of their workplace. both men are security guards who have worked here for decades. the incident happened just before 10, 30 wednesday morning in the area of post and kearny streets near union square. i'm just glad to hear that he's okay. serious battle stopped

by to check on morales after hearing about the incident. those really disturbing to see someone just jump out of their car and >> attack on the front of people. we know both morales and bethel say they have not experienced any problems all working in the area over the years kind like being in the financial districts. there is there are some interesting characters that wander by the. >> just keep on wondering by. so it's it hasn't been much of an issue. >> and police say this is still an active investigation and are still determining if this was a hate crime in the studio. gayle ong kron, 4 news. thank you, gayle. a concord hair stylists has been charged with sexually assaulting a child. >> and police say there may be more victims. police say 41 year-old she do assaulted the victim in his salon. chi hair salon on clayton road. vo is behind bars right now on a $275,000. bail anyone with more information is being asked to call concord police.

>> tensions are running high last night during uc berkeley's pro-palestinian protest. at least 2 people were hurt after an alleged aggravated assault in the encampment on the campus. our kron four's and lezla gooden reports now from cal berkeley tonight with more. >> yes, the pro cost encampment here at uc berkeley continues to grow and get more support from students and locals. here now, the student protesters tell me they are actively in negotiations with the university to talk about some of those them and they like to but while that was happening, some of those protesters were injured. >> uc berkeley's free palestine encampment continues to grow at this sproul plaza student protesters say they have been directly negotiating this week with berkeley administration on their demands. >> and in the silence on the genocide, it's to stop. and the 4th was a little more selfish locally facing and in the repression people who speak they're way too many

violence, do not any violence at all. he tells me their goal is to educate the student protesters and he believes they're not properly informed what the israeli government is doing would be shocked to find out that. >> the arab israelis are protected more than any other country in the world. lot of these students. attitudes, we're not be tolerated in palestinian territories. and we did reach out to the university regarding this incident between the 2 protesting groups and they say that police are currently investigating and they also condemn any violence at berkeley loves getting kron. 4 news. >> meantime, in southern california, this is what's left behind after police tore down encampment set up on ucla. ys campus there. they went in about 3 o'clock this morning. reports of flash bangs and rubber bullets were seen all over social media. chp says hundreds of people were arrested. some state lawmakers are now pushing for

>> he says they were able to crawl away the victims crawl away from that flipped truck. police say the woman and her daughter were taken to the hospital, but are expected to be ok, anyone who has any information about the shooting is asked to call oakland police. >> the captain of the conception dive boat has been sentenced now to 4 years in prison for the fiery deaths of 34 people who were aboard that scuba boat. 70 year-old jerry boylan has been sentenced for criminal negligence in the 2019 labor day tragedy near santa cruz island. prosecutors say that he failed to organize roving night patrols. sufficient fire drills and crew training. and they also say that he did not fight the flames or attempt to rescue trapped victims. 33 passengers and one crew member were killed. boylan was ordered to surrender to authorities and begin serving his sentence in july. are 4 zone forecast as we look outside live picture of san francisco on this warm

day. yeah, beautiful day out there, lawrence. what's going on? yes. starting to see some changes, though. and that change to appear along the coastline. >> the fog begin to roll back in and that's a sign that ridge of high pressure start to weaken just a bit. and that's a sign more things to come out toward half moon bay. right now you see some of the clouds outside as some of that fog hovering along the coastline right now, keeping you cool up toward the beaches. otherwise it was gorgeous. beautiful weather around the bay area today. again, numbers outside. right now, we're still looking at 75 a nice evening in concord. 73 in santa rosa. 72 just about perfect. little more. love more and san jose, very close, 70 degrees in san jose. 65 in oakland and 61 now some patchy fog trying to make its way to parts of san francisco. you can see right now that fog moving in the further south in the half. moon bay over on terror beach. more that on the way in the coming days as high pressure going to weaken somewhat. that's going allow for more of that fog and cloud cover creeping along the coastline. so we've got some cooler days ahead. much cooler. in fact, even a chance

of some rain on the way. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence. well, tonight is a first of 12 monthly block parties scheduled in san francisco. they're called downtown first thursdays and thousands are pre-registered to attend the street party. i started just about an hour ago on our kron four's rob nesbitt joins us live with the what inspired first thursdays. hey, it looks pretty crowded out there, rob. vicki, it's very crowded here. organizers got the idea from first fridays and oakland. they wanted to do the same thing here in san francisco. and this is the first first thursday for downtown san francisco. and it stretches all the way from market street behind down to howard. so they got second street blocked off. clearly we're good judging by this large crowd. >> by midday thursday, volunteers and city workers were busy closing down second street in san francisco and preparation for downtown first thursday, a monthly street

party to be held the first thursday of every month. and the idea of many you o. >> white is in san francisco have something that we're doing in our downtown that's that's us. that's uniquely the owner amenities and executive director of the city joy fund has organized live music. djs drag performances, martial arts and more for first thursday with the goal of attracting 10,000 people to downtown once a month. the reason why this is important is because we need to get people to create new memories downtown to remember how close it is and how easy it is to get there and how much there is to offer for folks. downtown business owners has spent the last few months preparing for first thursdays, including david scott mabry and michelle delaney who own one 11 minute gallery. they've seen other businesses close around their art gallery since the pandemic and hope the monthly street party is here to stay was working really hard to make really fun things happen everybody in the city and make the fun things happen that we are moved here for. >> so i want everybody to like get enjoy their city. first

your screen there. livermore police are asking for your help in finding this man. they say. >> killed 2 people inside a livermore hotel. police have identified him as 30 year-old johnston vasquez. the shooting happened on saturday at the laquinta inn on south front road near 5.80, they say that a man and a woman were found shot to death inside a room. police say that vazquez should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information is being asked to call livermore police. >> in the south bay man is dead and 3 children injured after a crash in south san jose. it happened last night on highway 85 south of kabul. road. the chp says the man was speeding when he veered into the median and hit a guardrail. he died at the scene. the 2 children or the children, rather ages 2, 4, and 8, 3 children suffered minor injuries. no word tonight on what exactly caused

the crash on the peninsula. there will be another gun buyback event in san mateo county on saturday. participants can exchange their guns for cash, $50 for a non-functioning gunna $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles and $200 for ghost guns. you can stop by anytime between 10:00am until 12 in the afternoon at 10, 50 mission road in south san francisco. for more than a year. the sparkling lights an art installation of the bay been turned off, leaving things looking a little. >> dark and lonely and we've got used to it. but the lights are coming back with promises. the project will be even bigger and better. kron four's. catherine heenan live in our newsroom with the details. we can't wait to see him back. people really did love those lights and it's been a 14 month since we've seen them. the co-founder of the nonprofit behind the project called eliminate. >> talk to kron today and his update will make a lot of people happy, including drivers. >> we think we%can do this

without being a driver distraction. actually think it might even increased driver attention. but but imagine coming into san francisco. have your friends into our cities reported the public art. that's 1.8 miles long. seen the city of san francisco open on the other side. we're very, very excited. >> the last time we saw ban davis, he was the guy officially turning the lights off. that was march of last year after more than a decade, the lights were basically warren out too expensive to maintain bringing them back has taken a lot of fundraising. the new lights will be more durable and more people will be able to see them. we're also gonna double the number of led so. >> we're still the western span in the northern edge of the bay bridge. but we're going to wrap around the table with a note on both sides so we can deliver a static equity around the bay. you know, really not just to the pet houses in san francisco, the north bay, but, you know, all the way down into the bay view, hopefully over the oakland, alameda berkeley, richmond and the new emerging neighborhoods of treasure

island and why the the new version will be called bay lights 3.60. >> if all goes well, they'll be up by march of 2025. >> a new design. a bigger show, but it will still take a lot of work. >> then we need to get up on the bridge and which is not easy to do as we as we take the old lights down, we'll put the new lights up in one big pass. we need to work with the traffic engineers to make sure that we're proposing is safe. and and then the artist needs to get up there and really spend as much time as he needs to program the lights and that she the level of beauty that i know that's already there, but he thinks he can take it even further. and then we'll have our grand lighting. >> the people behind the new lights did have to come up with 11 million dollars in donations to make it all happen. they've got all but the last half million, they say they expect to get that soon. they did not use any public money and they chose not to use sponsorships. most of the money came from wealthy donors. back to you. all right. thank you, catherine. looking forward to time now

for for the forecast as we get a live look at the bay bridge without the lights on because you could see him anyway. yeah, lawrence, a beautiful sight day or night. certainly is. but boy, love lights on their glove. they're going to come back and you know that next couple days is going to be interesting. we're going to see more clouds on the way in. >> well, a little fog out there to out toward the golden gate bridge. another one of those iconic bridges around the bay area looking good right now, although the fog begin to slip back in inside the golden gate, just a couple with some fog moving in right now. you see right there trying to come on in. we'll see more of that in the coming days. the pattern beginning to shift gears now. it looks like we're getting back to more wet weather pattern. so breezes kicked in. we've got some 2030 mile an hour gusts along the coastline in the san francisco in sfo, breezy elsewhere around the bay area. overall, though, we're getting ready for a big change in the pattern. and that's because we've got storm system that's approaching the coastline. the late season storm just making its way in the gulf of alaska starting to strengthen now. see the cold front out there. all the clouds. other got a way to go, though. and that means i think most your friday

looks pretty good, although begin to see a few more clouds. the temperatures are going to start to cool, too. alright, let's check out the forecast and you'll see as we head through time here tomorrow morning. we've got some patchy fog early on specially near the coastline as we head toward the afternoon, a few more clouds on the way. it's going to see the influence that front as it gets a little bit closer. probably should have the low cloud deck further on shore. then as we head in toward early on saturday morning. boy, we've got a nice little soaker out of this one. that one coming through early on saturday. so not a rainout for the whole day. i think by the afternoon that starts to clear out turning to more scattered showers. but it is going to be much, much cooler. we've seen temperatures running the 70's, the 80's. i think we're in the 50's in the 60's as we head in towards saturday and sunday is not going to be much warmer, although it should be mostly dry on sunday. but this is more like a winter type storm that is rolling in. so so much for that nice, sunny weather. we've got one more day and then it's gone well and then it will be back again. little comeback. yeah, there's no doubt about that. yes, just going to be couple of days here and then we'll get back into some warmer weather next week. all right. thank free

comic book day is celebrated worldwide and more than 2 decades ago, the annual event was founded at a comic book store in concord on saturday. flying colors. comics will distribute thousands of free comics. >> but as our kron four's philippe djegal reports tonight, you know, this year, the event is kind of bittersweet because it's going to be the last and its storied location. >> the countdown to free comic book day will culminate with a big batch flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord saturday. it's may the 4th be with you. star wars so there may be some characters from a galaxy far, far away. also be an emotional day for joe field and his loyal customers who have been shopping in his store since it opened 35 years ago. >> his lease is up at the end of the year and he has not been offered or renewal. we hope there isn't a closing date. we hope that there's more of a transition day and that's what we're working towards as field explores options to settle down at

this half hour, the city of oakland is seeing some positive trends when it comes to crime. >> the most recent oakland police statistics show that violent crime is actually dropped in several key categories. >> specifically homicides and assaults. proffers theresa has more now on what the city and community members are saying about it. all. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating where we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by n
