>> tonight at 5 30's, some scary moments as a woman and her daughter were caught in the crossfire of a shooting in oakland to now, police are working to try to find out why the shots were fired and by whom we spoke with the shaking up father a-d husband who showed up to help. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off.

>> this all happened near 98th and cherokee. see there. you saw the car on its side there. according to the woman's husband, she tried to drive away, but their suv was that hit by another car and flipped over the woman and her daughter managed to crawl away from the car. police are investigating, but so far have not identified any suspects nor a motive. anyone with info is asked to contact the oakland police department. by the way, the woman and her daughter are expected to be ok, physically. they were taken to the hospital just as a precaution. >> meantime, the city of oakland is embracing some positive trends when it comes to crime. the most recent oakland police statistics show violent crime has dropped in several key categories, specifically homicides and assaults are down compared with this same time last year, congress recessed osseo unpacks the numbers for us and examines what the city says is the reason behind the drop and what areas they do want to contince to improve upon.

>> i think it's definitely t o early for us to be celebrating where we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. wright was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like getting them on track, inspiring the behavioral changes needed to

prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies up 100 and 18%. so sad. >> to me to see my city in the shape. that is it that that's bishop bob jackson with acts, gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is it's where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have you that the numbers could could skyrocket. james deadly, a criminal justice professor at san francisco state university and former san francisco

police deputy chief says while data shows a downward trend now it doesn't predict the future. >> and that can be troubling. in the meantime, joe, she says that they will continue to work hard and help oakland become better. >> we also realize that a large part of community safety is how people are feeling and what perception and so i would say that we a long way to go in both of those arenas to recess. stasio kron. 4 news. >> livermore police are asking for help. they're trying to find a suspect who they believe is involved in a double murder. officers are currently looking for 30 year-old johnston, vasquez of oakland on saturday, police responded to a report of a shooting at the la cantina in on south front road when cops showed up, they found the bodies of a man and woman who had been shot in a room. it was determined. vasquez new one of the victims. officials say he hasn't caught and should be considered armed and dangerous. anyone with info on his whereabouts are asked to call livermore police.

>> man is dead and 3 children injured after a crash in south san jose. according to chp, the driver was speeding when he veered into the median and struck the guardrail. the driver died at the scene. the kids ages 8, 4, 2, years old were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the cause of the crash is being investigated. from coast to coast. a number of schools are now canceling classes and graduation ceremonies because of pro-palestine demonstrations and some cases these protests have gotten out of hand tonight. police body camera footage shows officers breaking through barriers that protesters set up at columbia university. >> the nypd descended on campus tuesday night to clear protesters inside and outside the building says toward the end of the footage, officers can be heard using a flash bang. authorities arrested 100 people there.

>> police also arrested dozens of protesters at washington university in st. louis, missouri video captured as steve to marry a 65 year-old history professor was being taken down by police officers. the university issued a statement saying a total of 100 people were arrested, including 23 students and at least 4 employees. 3 police officers were also injured. >> here in california, republicans in the legislature are calling for the state to take action against university administrators who these gop lawmakers say have simply not done enough to stop the violence, but that's not all. 8 on wallace spoke with the assembly and senate minority leaders about their message and shows how democrats are responding. >> well, republicans here in the legislature say they are outraged with what they've seen on campus and they believe the state can and should take more action. it's outrageous.

>> and it's unacceptable that we've allowed this chaos to ensue over weeks. someone minority leader james gallagher sharing that message about the protests and violence at college camauses across the country. >> and right here in the golden state during a press conference, gallagher and senate minority leader brian jones made clear they believe much of what's been taking place can and should have been stopped by university leaders. administration didn't just allow this in some cases. i believe they've been complicit. you look at the the fencing barricade that they put out. >> you look at the latitude and the amount of damage they allowed these protesters to do, you know, have the right to spray paint buildings, break windows, damaged the the facilities. >> and hold other >> we just don't have that right. he and his gop colleagues say college administrators who are found to have stood by were not properly stocked. campus violence should face disciplinary action specifically from a legislative standpoint. republicans are demanding the

state cut budget funding for those administrators and rescind cal grant taxpayer funded scholarships for students convicted of violating the law during the unrest. >> we should not be given cal grant money state money to students or a in other people's rights. we've had jewish students who fear for their lives going to that should not be the case on our university campuses. and there's got to be some accountability for that. these republicans say they have had private conversations and garnered some support behind the scenes from the democratic colleagues. but all major democratic leaders have yet to provide a direct public response to the republican proposal. >> governor gavin newsom's office directed us to his statement from wednesday saying the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend to inciting violence, vandalism or lawlessness on campus. those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions, including through criminal prosecution suspension or expulsion. lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis who serves on the csu board of trustees and

planning a little camping vacation. maybe just driving up the sierra nevada this weekend. we've got some serious amounts of snow headed to the high country. i know we but we've got this storm system developing off the coastline. it's a cold one come on the gulf of alaska to you can see the snow capped mountains as we look toward a 70 and half dome. beautiful out there right now. in fact, all across the sierra nevada, he still could see a lot of that snow across the high country as we've had a whole lot of snow over the last couple years. and then i snowpack developed again this year. so that's great news for our water resources and well even better. we're going to see more snow on top of that, of course, may not be so much fun if you're planning a little vacation up there and you get caught in it. so be prepared. a late season, very cold storm rolling into the high country with some gusty winds and it is going to drop the snow level all the way down to about 5,000 feet. that means you liked all. you're getting that snow all the way down the lake level. you can see 6, maybe 12 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. so maybe a foot of snow across the high

country. so travel delays. i think a real good unusually cold temperatures up there and gusty winds going to be ongoing troubles throughout that time. all right. here are the areas you can see chart shaded in purple and the advisory as we head through the sierra nevada, including the greater lake tahoe area. but all the way really down the sierra all the way mountain view, 70 valley as well. and so, yeah, especially the storm system to roll on in, of course, is the same storm that's going to bring some rain here. you see all the snow happening in the high country that continuing on sunday finally winding down and clearing out by monday. >> thank you, lawrence. happening now, public health and lgbtq+ groups are holding a rally in san francisco's city clinic on 7th street. they're protesting mayor breed's latest multimillion-dollar bond proposal. organizers say the 360 million dollars proposal cut critical public health priorities and focuses more on pet projects like downtown sidewalks and pound related traffic. and quote, if approved, it would be put on the ballot for the november

election. former san francisco democratic party chair a honey mahogany is stepping into the role as the city's director of the office of transgender initiatives. mahogany is a co-founder of the stud collective, a group formed to help save the soon to reopen lgbtq bar. the stud mayor breed says part of her work will be to serve the transgender community with outreach programs connecting with youth and to continue ongoing projects like transgender inclusion, training in the workforce. >> coming a one-on-one interview with san francisco supervisor. aaron peskin on his bid to become the city's next mayor.

deferred financing. the city has a lot of luxury housing and the city has also been able to maintain singer as can see hotels for the poor service. but missing middle needs to be addressed. pushing back against critics who accuse him of blocking housing development. the ordinance is finally next item earlier this year. city supervisors passed haskins measure imposing density limits in several historic neighborhoods. our neighborhoods are the envy of people around the world. it's not a one size fits all solution on the fentanyl crisis. i support arresting anybody who deals fentanyl or other. >> life-threatening drugs. drug users. on the other hand. >> need. >> surfaces. i asked him if he agreed with challenger mark farrell's promised to clear the city's homeless encampments in 6 months. false or fake promises. we need a place for those people to go because what happens in an encampment, sweet is people

of flirting with the coastline overall. we'll see a little more that overnight tonight and tomorrow morning tomorrow be a mixture of some fog and some sunshine around the bay area. just a little bit cooler. and then this weekend have a cold rain kind of rolls in on saturday drying out by sunday. it is a beautiful, 70 degrees in mount view right now. 68 in oakland, 70 in the battle. 72 in calistoga and 75 degrees still sunny in santa rosa changes, though, in the works. we do have a storm system off the coast line that's going to be rolling into bringing with it. that chance of rain you'll see here on the model as we get toward tomorrow afternoon. still perched off the coastline. tomorrow is going to be dry late tomorrow night into saturday morning. there you go. that rain moving in. some gusty winds on the backside of that system to the tapering off, maybe a scattered light shower early in the morning. before you get up on sunday, then we dry things out. then things are looking good after that as we head in toward next week, at least for the middle of the week. anyway, temperature-wise in the 60's in the san francisco along the coastline. you'll find those temperatures cooler 50's out toward the beaches and plan on a couple of patches of fog along the coastline. again,

developing throughout the day. you start out couple patches the morning, probably some clearing and then seeing that fog roll back in temperatures as you make your way inside the peninsular going warm up just a little bit. but boy, you get the amount you nice day. 71 degrees the south, a very enjoyable temperatures a little bit above the average. 73 in campbell, 74 in cupertino and 72 for our friends in sunnyvale, east bay, probably going to back off from those 80's for tomorrow afternoon. but going to be close about 78 in livermore, 76 degrees in dublin, 70 in hayward and about 70 degrees in berkeley. so really some nice weather out there around the bay area for friday. things would you know, as we get towards the weekend. that's kind of been the setup. but go back and look at all the weekends, we've had rain this year, it's been a and we're going to see it again. looks like on saturday that looks like a pretty good soaker. may be some rain amounts, maybe% upwards of about an inch of rain. so we're not talking just about a few hundreds. i mean, if you've got some plans, especially in the morning on saturday, you better plan being wet. >> like early morning or like right 8. >> i-10 o'clock if you're

his former place of living andy and jessica wiener horn are the owners of that same round table pizza where he was found. they have now welcomed him into their home. >> he's he's great time as as a rescue animal rate high. so cute in and, you know, healthy ready yet to loved by families that are living underneath job you want in the marines, you base. it was great, too, to rescue him clean them out and getting ready to be fostered and then adopted. >> pepperoni now goes by pepperoni, excited to be a little bit more traditional pepperoni also has 2 siblings to play with now at home is homecoming was also celebrated with a pepperoni pizza party at that round. taking >> and yeah, it's very cute. he looks happy. >> that those dogs the well. >> i was going to say, i don't know how good pizzas for a pop, but, you they think it's good. yeah.
