is your look outside right now a tower which is under all the sunshine you could ever want. we're seeing that up and down the coast to tomorrow morning. i'm expecting a bit of a foggy start so hopefully you've enjoyed this nice clear start. we've had this morning, little blustery at the coastline, but most of us are actually fairly common at this point. temperatures are hovering right up next to that 70 degree, mark, if not getting there, brentwood, fairfield and vacaville or for spots in the 70's soon to be followed by most of the rest of us really daytime highs today will reach the low 80's at the warmest. i'll be breaking down this big weekend cooldown. and yet another chance of rain all still ahead. back to you. all right. thank you very much, john. let's get to that breaking news this morning. that fire that michael is talking about the broke out a short time ago in a building in san francisco's not hill neighborhood. right. kron four's. michael thomas is in the studio for us now with those breaking details. michael. >> hey, will you know this fire started at around 8 o'clock this morning. we've got video. take a look. this is near jackson and laden's worth street. this is video posted by the san francisco

fire department. >> it started around 8 o'clock this morning. and officials say that the muni buses being affected in this area. so keep that in mind as you head out, the fire is coming from the roof. so the department trying to get those flames down. they see right now there's no injuries, but they are continuing to battle this blaze. and when it comes the area, just try to stay away as best as you can. they say that they're finding a smoke and all levels of the building at the moment. next, investigators will try to figure out just exactly how the fire started. so as we get more information, we'll continue to keep you updated. but again, they do are are asking people to stay away from the leave in borth and jackson area. i'll send it back to 2. >> ok, thank you, happening right now, college students across the nation are protesting the war in gaza, as you've probably seen on the news, some of those demonstrations, unfortunately have turned violent here in the bay area. uc berkeley last night, there was a tussle between 2 groups which >> cause some people to be injured. now, the encampment

at berkeley is a couple of weeks old, but so far police officers are monitoring those demonstrators. they have not actually moved in and engaged with them. no. now president biden did speak earlier this morning regarding this ongoing situation at college campuses across the country. his remarks come as congress now debate a bill that would broaden. >> the definition of anti-semitism. yeah. washington correspondent trevor shirley brings us the latest. >> as president, i will always defend free speech and i will always be just a strong stand up for the rule of law. >> president joe biden spoke thursday following passage of the house bill codifying the definition of anti-semitism which sailed through the house wednesday night with overwhelming bipartisan support. and it's time for senator schumer. >> the highest ranking jewish official in the history of the united states to act. and to put this bill up for a vote in the senate. but it's unclear when that might happen. we haven't seen with the house sending us yet. >> the bill relies on a definition of anti-semitism

established by the international holocaust remembrance alliance. if passed, it would give the department of education more leeway to enforce anti-discrimination laws as college campus protests spread. this bill threatens to chill constitutionally protected speech. >> speech that is critical of israel alone does not constitute unlawful discrimination. opponents say the bill violates protesters, constitutional rights. others say the measure gives college administrators something they need at a critical moment. protest are nothing new. >> in our country, their constitutionally protected by the first amendment. but it's also very clear that these institutions can regulate the exercise of those first amendment rights based on time, manner and place restrictions. >> was trevor shirley reporting now to more breaking news here locally, there's apparently a major police activity near bishop o'dowd high school in oakland its right kron. four's will tran is live at the scene with the

latest on this for us will. good morning to you. right now. police officers are towing away the second vehicle involved in all of this. you can see the suv on its side. >> apparently that was a mother driving a couple of kids near bishop o'dowd. and this is about 800 feet literally from the high school and just going to this location, all of a sudden another car comes along and slams into it, pushing the car on its side and look at the damage. we do know that the people inside were rushed to the hospital just as a precaution, but they should be okay. this all went down. ashley at around 7.45. this morning near bishop o'dowd at 98 and cherokee. so apparently shots rang out near the high school. the driver of the suv, which i just showed you heard gunshots and actually tried to speed away for their safety and all of a sudden runs across the second vehicle causing both cars too. kyle

lied and actually other car could not even drive away from the scene. police officers came to this area. notice that this car here, this suv was on his side, saw the people inside at that time. apparently they had already managed to crawl away from their car, taken to the hospital. they looked into the second car and the driver at the very least could be some passengers. but the driver at the very least was not found. not sure of that car has anything to do with the gunfire. but the fact as the driver wasn't there and perhaps passengers, we're not there leads police to believe that possibly they had something to do with it. and as you can clearly see, the are getting ready to tow away this suv from the scene. i'm sure it will be looked at as evidence and look at this. bishop o'dowd is just right down the road and the accident happened right next to the fire department. the fire

to market street, shutting down streets in suspending muni service on geary street. many held up signs that read one job should be enough. a lot of our folks work multiple jobs. they have to do. that is the tapia is the president of the union unite here local she says since the pandemic, several hotels cut hours, we really believe that you should be able to work one job have to have the basic things that your having. you know, basically fair market >> current contracts are set to expire this summer for 5,000 janitors and 10,000 hotel workers in the bay area. contract negotiations are set to begin in august. many hotel workers say better health care is their top priority. when you have contract we need to have >> hackers is the main thing because i have my daughter will have a i do have problems

like by half. our pride >> up and i need medicine for union leaders say they will negotiate shuns the summer go well so that a strike is not necessary. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in san francisco. kron. 4 news. >> well, 10, 0, 7, is the time in the north bay. an ambulance was stolen in santa rosa while the paramedics were at the scene of a medical emergency. it happened just before 8.45 last night on 4th street, sonoma county fire says that this ambulance you see here, the paramedic was attending to a patient while the emt was in the back of the ambulance. and they say that is when for some reason, the patient jumped up, ran to the ambulance, hopped in the driver's seat and took off with the emt still inside. in the end, police used spike strips to stop the ambulance and took that person into custody. >> downtown francisco video captures a man assaulting 2 people, both elderly asian men. this happened around 10,

20 yesterday morning at her post in kearny street near union square. you can see in the surveillance video if you watch this year, the man in a blue t-shirt gets out of his car, shoves the first victim and then tries to kick them. the suspect then goes after the second victim and pushes him to the ground before getting back in his car and driving off. going to see that encounter with that second victim right there. police described the victims as a 59 year-old in a 78 year-old man. authorities say this is an active investigation and are still trying to figure out if it was a hate crime. >> well, the auditor for the city of oakland released a pretty hefty report detailing how the city missed out on millions of dollars in funding to tackle retail crime. a kron four's terisa stasio brings us more. >> and so that's what stuck out to to me is >> no real process. guided buy a policy insistent on wednesday city auditor michael

houston explaining his department's findings. >> and analyzing why missed out on applying for the state's organized retail theft prevention grant program or rtp the state budget act of 2022. allocated 242 million dollars to support local law enforcement agencies such as opd to help prevent and respond to organized retail theft motor vehicle theft and cargo theft. the audit showed 38 separate oakland city officials were emailed alerting them of grant monies ranging from 6 million to 15 million dollars at stake months before the deadline. however, auditor houston said that his team discovered a process that was at times chaotic and in the end, never successfully submitted the required documents. he adds, although various departments played a role, he says that the mayor could have made a difference in the final outcome. say the but half and

long. which is great. i guess we get one more day, john, before turn. i know i love that sunrise this morning didn't take it for granted tomorrow. likely to be a little bit of fog at the coastline. and then saturday, the raindrops indeed returning, which is going to help to keep those hillsides nice green and lush kind of like we're seeing right now from the east bay hills. now, we are going to be seeing today and tomorrow, just as warm as each other. little bit breezy at the coastline. that is definitely resulting in some gale warning still continuing something that we have been seeing along the coast as those regular wind gusts that will continue into the weekend. now we are seeing our next storm system up in the gulf of alaska right now drops in during a pre-dawn hours of saturday morning and results in a wet saturday for us snowy one up in the sierra nevada. pretty late winter precipitation for some of our upper elevation. neighbors. and for those of us in the bay with model runs coming to fruition of around an inch of rainfall for some coastal spots. we could actually

exceed monthly averages of rainfall for the whole month of may. just on one day's time on saturday. so that tells you how significant the system is compared to the usual this time of year. the sierra does see a couple feet of snowfall. this highest of elevations could result in some chain controls come saturday. so be ready to go for those wintery conditions. if you are heading up this weekend, temperatures in the 70's to low 80's for today's daytime highs. very similar to yesterday. got one more day of this tomorrow and then comes the cool down as much as 20 degrees cooler come saturday and even though sunday does stay cool, at least will be drying out for the last day of the weekend. back to you. john. thank you so much. in the east bay, the original creator of free comic book day officially host the event for the last time. >> every year on may, 4th flying colors, comics and other cool stuff. that's the name of the store in concord celebrates free comic book day a day where you guessed it, free comics are given out to the public. this event was

founded back in 2002 by the owner of the store, joe field. and it just grew in popularity internationally to include 2000 other comic book stores. but even with the success, the store's future in concord is uncertain. fields says he is trying to find a new home for flying colors, but he still isn't exactly sure where the final flying color comics free comic book day on saturday, we'll feature thousands of free comic books and special guest bobby rubio and accomplished animation artist who has worked for pixar. disney, nickelodeon and paramount. sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. love the people showing up the cost yesterday. >> all right. 10, 17 is the time. and in san francisco, youth activists are on their 3rd attempt now to try to lower the voting age to 16. so that teenagers have the right to vote in local elections. it's an idea that's been gaining support over the years among community leaders. youth commission members say that this measure is meant to increase engagement overall in local elections.

>> we began at a time when young people are still in high school. i still at home and not able to i have that support network and makes it much more likely that they're going to continue being boat ads and make it happen much a they have proven that they are ready to vote and they have the skills needed to vote. but that's the core cognition skills that they need. what the lived experiences that young people have, whether it's taking care of family, whether it's working up to 40 hours a week and paying taxes, they meet many of the threshold to be considered necessary in order to the voters. and they do have a direct stake in the outcome elections. >> so growing up. i been around a lot of youth organizers who are very in tuned their community, their leading rallies regarding school safety, addressing assault and harassment in schools. and amongst and for lgbtq youth population. so they are very much in the front lines.

>> well, similar measures failed to won in 2016. another in twenty-twenty, albeit by a smaller margin. whether the measure will appear on this year's ballot is still being decided. the commission chair ewan barker plummer, says that the decision to introduce the measure to the board of supervisors will likely be made in the coming weeks. so we'll keep you updated. >> well, this week marks the start of asian american and pacific islander heritage month and throughout this month of may, we highlight the bay area's diverse asian communities. yeah. at san jose state, there's an exhibit at the library that dives into south asia and pulls examples from families living right here in silicon valley. have come for jack moment with the story. well, the region known as south asia makes up 7 different countries in the library. curator here at the king library at san jose state says she wanted to include the religions in the foods that make up each of these cultures. she wanted to also consults with families living here in the bay area who also have ties to those countries. >> that's really cool.

>> yeah. so these 2 things are lincoln. yes, and this is also from sri lanka up into the immersive martin luther king library at san jose state university in may. and you'll find an exhibit quite like no other. i think that could be very montr of roy is a library in here and she curated this exhibit on the 5th floor. it's titled south asians. >> of silicon valley, afghanistan, bangladesh, nepal, india, pakistan, sri these are nearly all the countries that make up the region of south asia, a region roy says needs more attention in the south bay. she says at least 20% of people who live in santa clara county are of south asian origin and more than 60% of international san jose state students are from south asia, but yet so many of them have struggled to find a voice to find themselves being represented well in mainstream what was born and raised in india. and she says having other south asians like herself in silicon valley added more reason for this project. these things help them feel more empowered that

>> we are back at 10. 24 in the east bay. 2 people are seriously injured in a 3 vehicle crash in brentwood involving a suspected driver. this happened tuesday night right in front of the shops at fairview on balfour road. police say 26 year-old zachary rua was speeding in a pickup truck when he hit it. toyota camry. camera then hidden at honda suv. now rouse passenger suffered serious injuries, though he's expected to survive. meantime, the man driving a camry had to be airlifted to the hospital. also a serious injuries. the driver of the honda fortunately wasn't hurt. but rounds now been booked into county jail on suspicion of driving under the influence. meanwhile, in the north bay benicia unified now facing a lawsuit claiming the district's swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. a

former teacher named matthew shelton was charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. attorneys say he worked at elementary schools for more than a decade. and when accusations surfaced, one school show resigned and switch to another school. the lawsuit accuses the district of negligent hiring and adds that the principal was friends with shelton and his wife. a group of bipartisan senators is reintroducing a bill that would limit kids. social media use. it's called the kids off social media act. it was first proposed about a year ago. it would set the minimum age for online social media users to 13 years old and prevent platforms from feeding algorithmically boost to content to users under 17 and for all users under 18, it would need parental permission to use apps like tiktok and instagram and snap chat. however, opponents are concerned that the bill shifts responsibility of protectin children from tech companies to parents. in the east bay. the oakland ballers are moving

got a text from my neighbor the other day. and he was one of the many homes that have been dropped by state farm by advised him to speak to a reputable broker locally and sorted out with him and get on the list for the fair plan before his termination. the fair plan is available to california residents and businesses in urban and rural areas who cannot obtain insurance to a regular insurance not freaking out. i'm worried, but you know, state farm customer and opened a native david anderson is also navigating home insurance coverage options for the booker says i'm learning about the california fair let's talk in august. they'll give us enough time to. >> can anderson is not alone. i was not able to get through state farm. i was also turned down by geico. >> so i'm not really sure what to do. nicole bought a condo in oakland last year and is still searching for home insurance, know online and everything people are just asking, you know, who will ensure us? where can we get insurance? and i just don't know people who have single-family homes, you know,

eshoo after a recount spanning 2 counties was completed. assemblyman evan low narrowly beat a santa clara county sutervisor joe smitty and who is now out of the running? it came down to low getting just 5 more votes than submit ian. before that, there was plenty of drama and the recent weeks. and so we know that now low in the card will face off on the november ballot. smitten issued a statement so book congratulating both low in the car. do smitty and says he's disappointed. but looking forward to continuing to support his constituents in santa clara county. and park officials in the east, they are reminding visitors to be on the lookout for these guys. rattlesnakes when going outdoors. these animals are becoming more active as they emerge from winter hibernation. officials say if you happen to spot a rattlesnake, you want to leave it alone, move away as quickly as possible. if you do get bitten by a rattlesnake, make sure that you get medical help immediately.

>> union city police now asking for the community to help out and finding this teenage girl has been missing since wednesday. her name is anne elise gonzales. she's 15 years old, stands about 4 feet, 8 inches tall. weighs about 120 pounds. she was last seen yesterday about 11 in the morning at james logan high school in union city. she's believed had been wearing a black jordan brand shirt and black jordan, tennis shoes any information on where she might be. call 9-1-1, to reach out to the union city police department. well, sheriff's deputies have recovered a man's body now that appears to ground into fremont creek tuesday, east bay regional parks, employees actually reported this man near 3rd and else streets in fremont trying to cross the creek. they saw that he was struggling. and that's why they put the call out. multiple agencies responded from alameda county. they searched for hours and eventually they did find the body pronounced the man dead officials still investigating. but at this point, they say it

does not seem asithough there's any signs of trauma or foul play. 10. 35 the time 10 people have been sighted in the north bay for overcharging customers for contract work by as much as $15,000. this is a picture of one of the sting operations conducted by law enforcement in marin and sonoma counties last month. officials say all of the people cited are unlicensed contractors, which according to contractors, state license board, they're not allowed to charge more than $500 for a job. but in many cases they were charging well above that. >> a daly city toy store owner is hoping police find the man accused of stealing a toy worth more than $200. take a look at the surveillance video shared from the store. this is from the location in the westlake shopping center. it shows the thief asking the owner if he can take a look at the toy that's behind the counter. and as the owner turns around to get at them and then takes off with the $200 product, reached out to daly city police about this incident and will update you

once we hear back. >> okay. turn our attention to a developing story. the alameda county district attorney pamela price, as we know is one step closer to a recall election. as for when that recall election will take place that still unknown, right? well, kron four's dan kerman spoke with legal experts about prices prospects and how a lawsuit might affect the recall. >> so rivers or help pfizer, merck, his supervisor, 10. all right, kirsten, yes, president island, yes. motion with alameda county supervisors voting to accept ballot signatures as certified by the registrar of voters. >> the attempt to recall district attorney pamela price moves forward, creating an ever more uncertain future for price. 61% of recalls nationwide in this time period resulted in removal. cause uptick, 6% or so have resulted in resignation before the recall. so they are very

successful as a rule. joshua spivak is a senior research fellow at berkeley laws, california constitution center. he says while recalls overall tend to be successful, it's more of a 50, 50 split in california. alameda county supervisor still have to decide whether to call a special election or let the recall happened during november's general election. spivak says that could impact the outcome. they seem to survive better when it's a special election. in a statement prices, if a recall takes place, it should happen during the november general election. but she maintains the recall is illegal because the county registrar of voters didn't follow its own charter by allowing more than 10 days to count signatures and by allowing out of county residents to gather those signatures. but so far her campaign is not filed a lawsuit against the county. i will support this motion and hopes >> that occasion is filed. so he get clear direction its meeting tuesday. one supervisor hope the lawsuit would happen. so a judge could

weigh in. but legal experts say even if that happens, it's unlikely prices campaign would be successful. i believe that at the end of the judges unlikely to say that the board was wrong when it chose to follow state law rather county ordinances. alameda county supervisors will set a date for the recall at a special meeting on may 14th. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> well, 10 38 is a time. and in the south bay, san jose police are going to be taking a different approach to cinco de mayo festivities this year after getting a little bit of backlash over the low rider parade this year. the police are actually planning on cruising right along with their own car in the during cinco de mayo weekend. sunday's parade play pays homage as we know to the mexican roots and history of the san jose last year. law enforcement close some of the highway ramps near that event which lawmakers called racist and discriminatory for singling out mexican
