across the bay area, james has been super pleasant past few days. you'd never know that we're in for quite the weekend. switch up a little bit breezy still on the coastline enough for some gale warnings up along the north coast of the watch for that. as for current temperatures, we're already back up in the 60's for spots like brentwood, pittsburgh, as well as vacaville and san mateo. so definitely warming on the quicker side of things under all that sunshine we've been seeing little breezy at sfo, but plenty of sunshine overhead. some 70's and 80's later on today. just like we had yesterday, i'll be talking everything you've got to know for the rest of this week and the weekend forecast. still ahead, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. it is 801 taking a look at your roads this morning. things are starting to clear up. we saw some congestion earlier but not too bad right now. you can see crockett to the maze. 41 minute there is a walnut creek to 5, 80 16 minutes. castro valley to the maze. 28 minutes and the answer to the maze. 21 minutes. once you get over towards that may's near that

bay bridge, it's going to take you 16 minutes to get across into the city. those metering lights are on the san mateo bridge. 23 minute commute on to the peninsula. taking a look up north of richmond. sandra fell bridge 14 minute commute. there and taking a look at the golden gate bridge. it is a 39 minute commute into the city. i will send it back to to the desk. >> all right. thank you very much, michael. 81 is the time. our developing news this morning. protests on college campuses continue to grow across the country, including here in the bay area. they're all calling for a cease-fire in gaza. yes, some of even turned violent says law enforcement has been called to remove protesters. kron four's will tran is live this morning at u c berkeley with the latest out there. good morning. well, >> the rna, james and john, they want peace in the middle east, but yet there was violence in the overnight hours in america and more specifically in our state in los angeles. as far as uc berkeley's concern, i just went by the encampment and it is quiet this morning. police officers are not moving in.

not disturbing. the protesters. that was not the case in the overnight hours in los angeles. here's video coming out of ucla with the protesters. they were told for hours by police officers to disperse using their loud speakers. and then finally, at some point, they said enough was enough. and that's when the police officers using mutual aid moved in and made the arrests. we understand that more than 100 people have been arrested. there was a clash between many protesters and police officers. those who did not fight back. they fought back in a different way. they locked arms to make sure that would be harder for police officers to ultimately make the arrests. now, let me show you a statement from governor gavin newsom. he is watching what's going on, of course. and he made a statement concerning ucla. so take a look at your screen. this is what he >> center acts about. 6 o'clock this morning. he said i condemn the violence at ucla

last night. the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend to incline dinged excuse inciting violence, vandalism or campus. >> those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions, including through criminal prosecution suspension or expulsion as far as uc berkeley. let me show you video of the encampment. it seems to be pretty much the same size of the past couple of days, not growing any bigger, but not growing. any smaller. last night. there was a brief skirmish between 2 groups where understand that at least a couple of people were injured, forcing police officers to move into help deal with the skirmish skirmish. but you still remains long as it remains. >> jewish students we talked to this morning say they don't feel safe. >> kerry? i to see what's

going every person just stand and say no, need to speak each other, we need his side of the site. >> so the encampment at u c berkeley, not here. you can see the sign right behind me. kids are going to campus. this is actually happening at sproul plaza. sproul hall right next to the police station. i mean, literally right next to the police station. so officers can pounce on it. if anything should happen. but so far there's no need that protesters here very much like the same as protesters in los angeles and across the country. they are demanding that their respective universities acknowledge what they claim is genocide happening in gaza as well. as for the universities stop doing business is skews me. don't stop doing business.

than 1500 hotel workers and janitors marched in the streets of downtown san francisco yesterday. demanding raises and better health care. the march started at union square and continue down market street where they blocked traffic can stop muni service on geary. union leaders say their current contract expires in august for 5,000 janitors and 10,000 hotel workers. workers say that since the pandemic hotels have scaled back services and staffing. >> you know, corporations able to deal with and is down and they're able to do that by cutting staff and saving money so they make it cause doing that. whereas you know, as working people, i bill say the same our wednesday, the same. our groceries are going up, right? everything costs more. and we don't have a way of dealing pandemic out of the survive. and >> the union president says they are hoping that negotiations go smoothly this summer and that a strike will be avoided and see what happens.

>> in the north bay, an ambulance was stolen in santa rosa while paramedics were on the scene of a medical emergency. it happened just before 08:45pm last night on 4th street, the sonoma county fire district says the ambulance paramedic was with the patients. while an emt was in the back of the ambulance. that's when they say the patient suddenly got up. ran to the ambulance, jumped in the driver's seat and sped off with the other. emt still in the back, police say they use spike strips to stop the ambulance before taking the suspect into custody. >> well, the city of oakland's auditor has released. actually. we've got live looks from washington. the president making comments now on these campus protest. let's listen 2 fundamental american principle security. the first right to free speech. and for people to peacefully assemble make their voices heard. second, it's the rule of law. both must be upheld. we are not enough art.

her nation where we silence people or squash dissent. the american people are heard, in fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition how americans respond to consequential issues. but but neither are we a lawless country civil society and order must prevail. throughout our history. we've often face moments like this because we are big, diverse, free thinking and freedom loving nation. and moments like this, there are always those who rushed and a score political points. but this isn't a moment for politics. small for clark. so let me be clear. peaceful protest in america. violent protest is not protected. peaceful protest she gets along. violence occurs, destroying property is not a peaceful protest against the law. vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of

classes and graduations. none of this is a peaceful protest threatening people, intimidating people he's telling for people is not peaceful protest. it's against the law. the senate is essential to democracy, but the senate must never lead to disorder or to deny the rights of others so students can finish the semester and their college education. space. a matter of fairness, it's a matter of what's right. there's a right to protest but not the right to cause chaos. people have the right to get education right to getting a degree. right to walk across campus safely without fear of being attacked. let's be clear about this as well. should be no place in any campus. no place in america for anti-semitism or threats of violence against jewish students. there's no place for hate speech. our violence of any kind, whether it's anti-semitism, some a phobia

discrimination against arab-americans. are palestinian americans simply wrong? there's no place for racism in america. so wrong. it's un-american. i understand people have strong feelings of deep convictions in america. we respect right and protect a right for them to express but it doesn't mean anything goes. it needs to be done without violence without destruction without hate and within the law. you know, make no mistake as president, i will always defend free speech and i will always be just a strong stand up for the rule of law. that's my responsibility. you the american people. my obligation of the constitution. thank you very much. >> can set own policies and we know. >> thank you. president using the national guard unit in

>> all right. we are back coming up on 8.15 here with a live look outside behind us showing coit tower. kinda hard to make out in the shop. but it's brilliant out. there. it is. gorgeous skies this morning. james had a nice sunrise earlier on this morning. i was really pretty enjoying it from here in the studio. a look outside at the golden gate bridge right now. really clear out there and not quite as windy as it was the past couple of days. >> tomorrow morning, i'm expecting the return of fog to some of the coastline. so enjoy these clear skies this morning. radar shows those crystal clear conditions, marine layer fog still pushed well away from the shoreline. we are seeing some of it up along the mendocino coast little bit breezy still enough for some gale warnings up in down the coast itself. now we are going to be looking at a big switch up just around the corner right now. the low that we're talking about is centered up in the gulf of alaska. but that cold front dives in friday night into saturday morning that along with a big cool down and some

rainfall for the bay, especially midday on saturday. look at all the blew up in the sierra. that is your snowfall and another good snow maker in the sierra. most of this on saturday before clearing back out on sunday. now a lot of rainfall models are indicating we could see up to an inch along the north bay coast and anywhere between 3 quarters of an inch to an inch elsewhere. now, if we do achieve numbers like this, we will be exceeding month-long rainfall averages for may in just the course of a few hours. so that tells you how unseasonably late this system really is. snowfall in the sierra looking pretty impressive as well as potential of a few feet of snowfall. the very highest of elevations anticipate some chain controls into saturday. high temperatures today are going to be the 70's for most areas, concord, antioch, in napa, each in the low 80's for your daytime highs. so still a warm one today. tomorrow, a few clouds here and there temperatures likely to be one to 2 degrees cooler tomorrow, but a full 20 degrees cooler into saturday for some inland

spots as that cold air and rain settles in. michael thomas is in for a this morning with a look at the roads. what's going on up there? >> hey, good morning, everyone. 8.16, is the time. taking a look right now at the roads. we're seeing a little bit of congestion but nothing too major. if you're on 8.80, that's going to be the biggest one. they're dealing with some residual delays, san leandro to milpitas. 49 there was some accidents in that area, dublin to fremont. 33 minutes milpitas to sonny bill. 10 minutes livermore to dublin 14 minutes. so not too bad. that bay bridge still stop and go per usual. 9 o'clock is normally when it starts to clear up. we're looking at a 19 minute commute from the maze into the city. taking a look at the richmond, sandra fell bridge to 13 minute commute and the san mateo bridge. well, that's only a 24 minute commute right now on to the peninsula. taking a look at some hot spots like antioch. right now. it's a 38 minute commute from antioch over to concord. so not too bad this morning, westbound 80 also looking good. 36 minute from crockett to the maze.

those eastbound lanes on 80. they are dealing with an accident in berkeley. and you can see that congestion there that is starting to get cleared up. so hopefully by 8.30, it will be completely gone. taking a look at walnut creek to 5 ats 16 minute commute and checking in with the south bay this morning, morgan hill to san jose. 13 minutes that 101. it's about an hour. so commute from san jose to menlo park. send it back to 2 at the so much, michael. it's 8.17, now and in the east bay. >> the original creator of free comic book day will officially be hosting the event for possibly the last time every year on may. 4th flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord celebrates free comic book day a day where you guessed it, free comics are given out to the public. the event was founded back in 2002 by the owner of the store. joe field and grew in popularity internationally to include 2000 other comic book stores. but even with the success of the store's future in concord

is uncertain. fields says he is trying to find a new home for flying colors, but he doesn't know exactly where that will be. the final flying color comic books, free comic book day on saturday will feature thousands of free comic books and special guest bobby rubio and accomplish animation artists whose work for pixar, disney, nickelodeon and paramount. kron. 4 is your local election headquarters and a big development in the race to replace congresswoman. and as you after a recount spanning 2 counties was completed. assemblyman evan low narrowly beat out santa claragcounty supervisor. joe, some indian who is now out of the running. it came down to low getting just 5 more votes than some indian. before that there was plenty drama in recent weeks with lows campaign trying to halt the recount. they blamed former san jose mayor sam liccardo who finished first in the race for indirectly asking for the recount to improve his chances which look denied. so now low and with a will face off on

the november ballot. some indian issued a statement congratulating both low in the cargo city and says he's disappointed but not sad saying he has wonderful work to keep him engaged in santa clara county. >> well, the city of oakland's auditor has released a pretty sick reports, 30 pages in length. yeah, this is detailing how and why the city missed out on millions of dollars in funding to tackle crime. kron four's terisa stasio has the full story. >> and so that's what stuck out to to me is >> no process. guided buy a policy insistent on wednesday city auditor michael houston explaining his department's findings. >> and analyzing why missed out on applying for the state's organized retail theft prevention grant program or rtp the state budget act of 2022. allocated 242 million dollars to support local law

enforcement agencies such as opd to help prevent and respond to organized retail theft motor vehicle theft and cargo theft. the audit showed 38 separate oakland city officials were emailed alerting them of grant monies ranging from 6 million to 15 million dollars at stake months before the deadline. however, auditor houston said that his team discovered a process that was at times chaotic and in the end never successfully submitted the required documents. he adds, although various departments played a role, he says that the mayor could have made a difference in the final outcome. say the but half >> and it's a size more of the direct leadership in making sure that the grant application process was carried out successfully. you need to make sure that someone is in charge. and we spent, example, during the great

recession. >> a lot of effort getting every penny from the obama stimulus from washington. and we just made sure that every detail was covered. we did rehearsals about filing. we make sure our web sites were up and running. we didn't take any chances at all. >> dan lin time is a former oakland city administrator and a current uc berkeley professor. he says that his team was able to secure more than 100 million dollars in grants during his tenure on it or houston says bottom line, the city could do more to secure critical grants. >> develop and implement a citywide grant management policy provides prescriptive guidance, including delineation of roles and response to the audit. mayor sheng thao center sunday mail saying that she takes ultimate responsibility for the failure to secure the grant monies and >> in the meantime, has been working hard to secure more funding to tackle crime in the

police say 26 year-old zachary rao was speeding in a pickup truck when he hit a toyota camry. that camry then hit a honda suv. rouse passenger suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. meantime, the man driving the camry was airlifted to the hospital, also with serious injuries. the driver of the honda was not hurt. brown was booked into jail county jail on suspicion of driving under the influence. in the north bay. benicia unified is facing a lawsuit claiming the district swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. a former teacher named matthew shelton was charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. attorneys say shelton worked in elementary schools for more than a decade when accusations surfaced at one school, shelton resigned and switch to another school. the lawsuit accuses the district of negligent hiring and adds that the principal was friends with shelton and his wife. well, a ipartisan senators is reintroducing a bill that

8.30, is the time with a check of the weather here at the half hour. looks great outside. yeah. it doesn't look bad at all. we've enjoyed the little bit of a cool, but definitely sunday morning. so far. >> and looking outside right now and then different at the moment. quite hour. still looks nice and bright. little bit of a breeze sifting through the golden gate and up and down the coastline, but not as windy as what we had seen yesterday. one of our breezy spots in santa rosa around 29 miles per hour for your wind has been relentlessly breezy up on the north coast, especially temperatures right now are in the 50's to low 60's gradually rising throughout the course of the morning. and now that the sun is getting a little bit higher, we'll see those temperatures rising even quicker eventually taking us right back to the 70's and even low 80's by this afternoon. it's another warm one tomorrow as well before a big weekend. cooldown, which i'll break down for you. still to come, michael. >> hey, good morning. everyone

will taking a look at the roads right now. not too checking in on some drive times. those who are heading out this morning to the maze from crockett. 34 minute commute walnut creek to 5, 80 17 minutes. castro valley to east. 31 minutes. stanley and or to the maze. 26 minutes. once you get over towards that maze to get into the city to 14 minute commute over the bay bridge this morning. taking a look at the san mateo bridge. 23 minutes on to the peninsula. there is a disabled car. once you get closer towards a peninsula on the right hand side. so keep that in mind. taking a look at the richmond. sandra fell bridge right now. it's a 17 minute commute over that. you can see that stop and go traffic checking in with the golden gate bridge. it is a 33 minute commute into the city this morning send it back to 2 of the thank you. it's a 31 and a big story. we're following thousands of homeowners in a rented now set to lose their insurance when state farm and its coverage of the summer. yeah. and now they're all scrambling. all these homeowners to find a new insurer. >> this insurance crisis is impacting the real estate

industry as well. kron four's gayle ong reports. i think our government has to get involved. >> this is it's a problem. people need have insurance for their homes were burned or cold around is a realtor at coldwell banker realty basin a city at the top of the list of state farm customers scheduled to be dropped this summer. cold around is not only helping clients navigate the home insurance crisis. just got a text from my neighbor the other day. and he was one of the many homes that have been dropped by state farm by advised him to speak to a reputable broker locally and sorted out with him and get on the list for the fair plan before his termination. the fair plan is available to california residents and businesses in urban and rural areas who cannot obtain insurance to a regular insurance not freaking out. i'm worried, but you know, state farm customer and opened a native david anderson is also navigating home insurance coverage options for the booker says i'm learning about the california fair let's talk in august. they'll give us

into contract. so that ideally before we go into contract so that they know what they're getting into. meantime, the state department of insurance says the agency has experts ready to assist affected state farm customers. >> reporting in orinda gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> in contra costa county firefighters are continuing the next phase of a 3 million dollar project to stop future wildfires. it's called a fuel break project and where contra costa fire crews are working to clear overgrown and dry vegetation just to try to the spread of any wildfires. should they break out? work began in ross more than around sections of lafayette last july. the 3 million dollar project is funded by cal fire and it's intended to save lives and property within 190 acre area. >> preparedness before increased. fire season really kicks out. we're asking residents say make sure space is around the houses.

>> near the fuel break project will continue for the next few weeks. we'll see them out there doing that. >> park they are reminding visitors to be on the lookout for these rattlesnakes when heading out there, they're becoming more active as they emerge from their winter hibernation. officials say if you spot one, leave it alone and move away as quickly as possible. now, if you do get bitten by a rattlesnake, remain calm, avoid running and absolutely seek medical help immediately. >> union city police are asking for the community to help them find a teenage girl that's been missing since wednesday. and elise gonzalez is 15, 4 feet, 8 inches tall and around 120 pounds. she was last seen yesterday at 11:00am at james logan high school in union city. gonzales was believed to be wearing a black jordan brand sweatshirt and black jordan tennis shoes. if anyone has any information, please call 9-1-1 or reach out to the union city police department. sheriffs recovered

a man's body who appeared to have drowned in a fremont creek tuesday, east bay regional parks. employees reported a man near 3rd and i streets in fremont trying to cross the streak and was seen struggling in the current multiple agencies from alameda county responded to the report after hours of searching, authorities were able to find the body and pronounced the man dead. officials are still investigating but say there does not seem to be any signs of trauma or foul play. 10 people have been cited now the north bay for overcharging customers for contract work. >> by as much as $15,000. in some cases, this is pictures. so one of the sting operations conducted by law enforcement up in marin and sonoma counties last month. officials say all of the people cited are unlicensed contractors. according to the contractors, state license board, unlicensed contractors, half a charged wind about $500. but everybody they arrested stretching way more than that. daly city toy store owner is hoping police can find them and took advantage of him and

stole a toy worth more than $200. so this is surveillance video that the store posted its from their location at the westlake shopping center. and you watch the thief asks the owner. if you can see a toy from behind the counter and the owner walks back to get it. and that's when the thief grabs that expensive toy off of the counter in front of just runs off. we did reach out to daly city police about what happened. we haven't heard back. but the store owner want you to call police. if you recognize who this person is. well, with alameda county district attorney pamela price, now, one step closer to a recall. the question that remains is when will that recall election be held kron four's? dan kerman talked with legal experts about prices prospects. >> and how a lawsuit might affect the recall. >> supervisor pfizer merck, his supervisor, 10. all right, kirsten, yes, president island, yes. >> motion passes with alameda

county supervisors voting to accept ballot signatures as certified by the registrar of voters. the attempt to recall district attorney pamela price moves forward, creating an ever more uncertain future for price. 61% of recalls nationwide in this time period resulted in removal cost up 6% or so have resulted in resignation before the recall. so they are very successful as a rule. joshua spivak is a senior research fellow at berkeley laws, california constitution center. he says while recalls overall tend to be successful, it's more of a 50, 50 split in california. alameda county supervisor still have to decide whether to call a special election or let the recall happened during november's general election. spivak says that could impact the outcome. they seem to survive better when it's a special election. in a statement prices, if a recall takes place, it should happen during the november general election. but she maintains the recall is illegal because the county registrar of voters didn't follow its own charter

by allowing more than 10 days to count signatures and by allowing out of county residents to gather those signatures. but so far her campaign is not filed a lawsuit against the county. i will support this motion and hopes >> that occasion is filed. so he get clear direction its meeting tuesday. one supervisor hope the lawsuit would happen. so a judge could weigh in. but legal experts say even if that happens, it's unlikely prices campaign would be successful. i believe that the end of the judges unlikely to say that the board was wrong when it chose to follow state law rather county ordinances. alameda county supervisors will set a date for the recall at a special meeting on may 14th. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> all 39 is the time in the south bay, san jose. police are going to be taking a different approach to cinco de mayo festivities this year after they received some backlash last year. so this

warning on the coastline. this is mostly affecting northwesterly, expose beaches, especially as we're seeing the strongest winds on those points. now, futurecast shows our next storm system. right now it's centered up in the gulf of alaska. this cold weather maker is moving its way down our direction starting friday night into saturday. it will come along with some very decent rainfall totals considering how late in the year we are. most of this occurs on saturday and has gone by sunday. also some low elevation snowfall in the sierra. now a lot of model runs are indicating the almost an inch of rainfall for parts of the bay area. if this happens, this is going to be whole long. total of rainfall in just a matter of a day on rainfall for most areas, it is only three-quarters of an inch to an inch. so that is saying something about how big the system is for this time of year. future cast of snowfall totals in the sierra is showing the potential of upwards of a foot if not 2 feet at the crest of the sierra expect chain controls

says she wanted to include the religions in the foods that make up each of these cultures. she wanted to also consults with families living here in the bay area who also have ties to those countries. >> that's really cool. yeah. so these 2 things are lincoln. yes, and this is also from sri lanka up into the immersive martin luther king library at san jose state university in may. >> and you'll find an exhibit quite like no other. i think that could be very montr of roy is a library in here and she curated this exhibit on the 5th floor. it's titled south asians. >> of silicon valley, afghanistan, bangladesh, nepal, india, pakistan, sri lanka. he's or nearly all the countries that make up the region of south asia, a region roy says needs more attention in the south bay. she says at least 20% of people who live in santa clara county are of south asian origin and more than 60% of international san jose state students are from south asia, but yet so many of them have struggled to find a voice to find themselves being
