krone 4 morning news. the pro-palestinian encampment at u c berkeley continues to grow. we're live on the campus this morning. >> and audit reveals why the city of oakland missed out on grant money that would have helped combat retail crime and assemblymember evan low advances to the november ballot after narrowly winning a recount in the race to replace anna eshoo with congress. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. it is what it says. a second. i'm james judge variable. excited to in for darya folsom and we're starting off with a check of the weather will get to the headlines in a minute. but the weather has been looking fantastic. sunrise has been looking great. i know i love the sunrise this morning been catching all the use of it as much as possible. and this one in particular from the bay bridge was really nice and bright earlier, still got that

golden glow out there. not all that breezy this morning, too. so if you want to get outside savor the morning, definitely a good one to do. so skies are clear this morning, but we will have the return of a little bit of fog tomorrow morning. so not quite as crystal clear for your friday. santa rosa, one of her breezier spots right now, vacaville up in the delta. still fairly breezy as well. that's going make for a cool wind chill and some of these spots with temperatures down in the 40's to 50's right now. dublin in fremont at 48 degrees. vacaville, you're fairly mild at 52 santa rosa actually at 59 degrees right now later on today, daytime highs in the 60's 70's to even some low 80's inland. i'll be talking tomorrow as warm weather and then a huge weekend cooldown. still ahead, michael thomas is in for a this morning. what's the latest on the road? >> hey, good morning, everyone. it's 701. we are seeing some delays on southbound 8.80. there's 2 accidents in the freeman area and i'll have details about that coming up at about 8.50, or 7.15, or so. but taking a look at some quick drive times if you're heading out this morning, you're heading

towards the maze. crockett to them is right now. it's a 26 minute commute. walnut creek to 5, 80 12 minutes. castro valley to the maze, 14 minutes and stanley and or to the maze 12 minute taking a look at that bay bridge. once you get to that area, it is stop and go traffic. 18 minutes to get into the city from the maze and a look at the san mateo fpbridge right now, 20 minutes into our on to the peninsula. i should say. we'll take a look at the richmond. sandra fell bridge 15 minutes there to get over that. and lastly, that golden gate bridge coming in at 22 minutes to get into the city. i'll send it back to 2 at the desk. >> all right. thank you very much, michael. to the time and are developing story this morning. protests on college campuses are growing across the country and here in the bay area as calls for a ceasefire in gaza continue to grow. yeah, some of even turned violent as law enforcement has been called to remove protesters. kron four's will tran is live at u c berkeley with the latest. good morning. well,

>> john, uc berkeley police officers have not moved in on the encampment here on campus. it is peaceful this morning. but how long that stays we just don't know, which is why we continuously cover this story. a different story, however, to the south. let's go to los angeles. and this is video that we got over the past hour. it was violent in the overnight hours after police officers told protesters for hours using their loudspeakers that unless they dispersed, they would be arrested. and then in the overnight hours, police officers in riot gear moved in. we just found out they did make arrests more than 100 people. you can see a long line of people arrested by police officers used using mutual aid only officers from ucla but chp officers as well. a big clash on campus and you can see all the trash that over ucla this morning. as far as what's going on while it

isn't just the police officers monitoring the situation, you better believe that governor gavin newsom, he knows full well. what's going on at universities in california. take a look at your screen. this is what he sent out his statement next over the past hour or so. he says as far as what happened at ucla, he says i condemn the violence at ucla last night. the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend to incite violence, vandalism or lawlessness on campus. those engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions, including through criminal prosecution suspension or expulsion as far as uc berkeley. let me show you some video of what's happening right now. the encampment continues to grow by the day. it's about 2 weeks old and that's that's probably plaza in front of sproul hall. they are there with their tents, reportedly moment. most of them are students. but some believe that a lot of people are coming from the outside.

but regardless police officers, i have seen they are walking through the encampment from time to time, but they have not moved in. they did move in yesterday last night when there was a slight skirmish between 2 groups injuring 2 people that the encampment still remains this morning. get a chance to talk to jewish students campus. they say while this goes on, they don't feel safe. >> scary. i to see what's going every person just stand and say no, need to speak each other, we need his side of the site. >> the protesters here, ucla or across the country, they pretty much have the same

demands that their universities acknowledge what they claim is genocide happening in gaza. and they also want the universities to stop doing business. was israeli companies, especially ones that manufacture weapons of war? we're monitoring the situation on campus uc berkeley. but as i mentioned, it is quiet for now with students coming in going. keep in mind, a lot of them are students. they claim and they're sleeping in the tense waking up. going to classes with finals next week and graduation couple of days right? well, thank you very much. >> in related news, we've got richmond city council members now agreeing to stop investing in companies that they believe are involved in israel's violations of palestinian rights. city leaders say that richmond will going forward divest from a list of companies including brand names you're aware airbnb, microsoft, motorola and others. last october, richmond city council members passed a

resolution that affirmed the city support and solidarity with the palestinian people of gaza. >> more than 1500 hotel workers and janitors marched the streets of downtown san francisco yesterday, demanding raises and better health care. the march started at union square and continue to market street where they blocked traffic in stop community service on geary street. union leaders say their current contract expires in august for 5,000 janitors and 10,000 hotel workers. workers say since the tells of scale back services and staffing. >> you know, corporations able to deal with and is down and they're able to do that by cutting staff and scving money so they they can conserve caused by doing that. whereas you know, as working people, i bill say the same our wednesday, the same. our groceries are going up, right? everything costs more. and we don't have a way of dealing pandemic out of the survive

and >> the union president says they're hoping negotiations go smoothly the summer and the strike won't even be necessary. fast-food workers in oakland plan to strike today to protest worker health and safety mcdonald's and help local employees say their stores have failed to protect workers and customers from hazardous conditions. and a formal complaint to cal osha employees describe seeing rats nibbling on pieces of bacon and hamburgers that are ready to serve the customers up to a local plans. their strike today at 3. well, mcdonald's plans their strike at 4.30, both at their respective locations in oakland. your local election headquarters and a big developments in the race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo after recount spanning 2 counties was completed. assemblyman evan low narrowly beat out santa clara county supervisor. joe, some indian who is now out of the running. it came down to low getting just 5 more votes than some indian. before that there was plenty of drama in recent weeks with lows

campaign trying to halt the recount. they blamed former san jose mayor sam liccardo, who finished in first place for indirectly asking for the recount to improve his chances which look hard tonight. so now low and ricardo will face off on the november ballot. some video issued some indian issued a statement congratulating both low in the cargo city and says he's not disappointed but not sad, saying that he had a wonderful run and enjoyed working with the community and engaging santa clara county. >> all right, 708, is the time of the city of oakland's auditor has report more than 30 pages long. >> detailing how and why the city missed out on millions of dollars of funding to tackle crime. kron four's terisa stasio has the story. >> and so that's what stuck out to to me is >> no real process guide. it buy a policy insistent on wednesday city auditor michael houston explaining his

department's findings. >> and analyzing why missed out on applying for the state's organized retail theft prevention grant program or rtp the state budget act of 2022. allocated 242 million dollars to support local law enforcement agencies such as opd to help prevent and respond to organized retail theft motor vehicle theft and cargo theft. the audit showed 38 separate oakland city officials were emailed alerting them of grant monies ranging from 6 million to 15 million dollars at stake months before the deadline. however, auditor houston said that his team discovered a process that was at times chaotic and in the end never successfully submitted the required documents. he adds, although various departments played a role, he says that the mayor could have made a difference in the final outcome. say the but half

>> and it's a size more of the direct leadership in making sure that the grant application process was carried out successfully. you need to make sure that someone is in charge. and we spent, example, during the great recession. >> a lot of effort getting every penny from the obama stimulus from washington. and we just made sure that every detail was covered. we did rehearsals about filing. we made sure our web sites were up and running. we didn't take any chances at all. >> dan lin time is a former oakland city administrator and a current uc berkeley professor. he says that his team was able to secure more than 100 million dollars in grants during his tenure on it or houston says bottom line, the city could do more to secure critical grants. >> develop and implement a citywide grant management policy provides prescriptive guidance, right including

>> and we're back 7.15, is the time. checking the forecast the quarter hour with beautiful skies behind it says has been all morning long. it's been really nice morning. this is those mornings that you like look outside you like what you to get out there. really kind chilly about a little bit later on today. we're going back to those warm temperatures, some 70's 80's for us yet again today. san jose, nothing but the sign overhead. now, james a little bit more haze on the horizon today. that high pressure is can a contributing to less than ideal air-quality for a few spots. overall, though, today is definitely a winner today and tomorrow. absolutely. great days to get outside. if you love the sunshine and warmth, not as windy at the coastline as it was yesterday, but windy enough that we do have some gale warnings, this mostly affecting northwesterly exposed beaches, especially up around point, raise where

we've seen are very windiest of conditions the past few days. now, futurecast does indicate today and tomorrow, lots of sunshine, little bit of marine layer, slipping back in tomorrow morning. after that, though, friday night into saturday. that's when our next cold front dyson and this is a cold area there. that's right. now centered upon the gulf of alaska. and it is going to come along and completely switch everything up for us from the warm and dry weather we've enjoyed lately to just some low 60's at the warmest come saturday. and you see here that rainfall that makes its way in and a lot of blew up in the sierra indicating some late season snow for them. we'll dry quickly into sunday, but stay cool for the last part of the weekend. now it's a model estimates are showing inch of rainfall on parts of the north coast like but they can pay and its close to an inch in areas like san francisco in half moon bay. we do see these totals coming through which a lot of models are indicating this will exceed your average monthly rainfall for may. so this is a pretty significant system right here, especially this late in the season. as

for that snow in the sierra couple feet at the very crest of the sierra. glad to see it. we need it. build up a little late season snow pack will likely mean chain controls in effect. come saturday, though, as for temperatures today, you'd never know. we have a wintery return with conquered in napa in the low 80's. lots of 70's for most of the rest of us tomorrow going to be similar. a few clouds as that marine layer to slip in the morning tomorrow, saturday. overall, very cloudy and very rainy for that matter, too, with temperatures as much as 20 degrees cooler than today. and tomorrow will be michael. >> thanks, john. good morning, everyone. it is 7.17, when it comes to traffic. things look ok, but we are seeing some delays on the southbound lanes of 8.80. and you can see there was 2 collisions that happened. ones already been cleared up. so we're seeing some residual delays that's at stevenson boulevard. and again, these are southbound lanes. but there's an accident that still active right now in fremont. and this right before stevenson ave a boulevard

excuse me and the left lane is currently blocked. so you can see that traffic starting to build up all the way towards even union city will keep an eye on and keep you updated about 7.30, right now. taking a look at some drive times livermore to dublin. 11 minutes, dublin to fremont. 24 minutes, san leandro to milpitas 50 minutes. and that's because of those accidents that we're seeing milpitas to sunnyvale. 8 minutes, a live look at that bay bridge. you can see it's stop and go traffic this morning as sun starts to rise 22 minutes into the city from the maze. taking a look at the richmond, sandra fell bridge to 14 minute commute over that. no major delays there. that san mateo bridge right now. 24 minute commute on to the peninsula. so that looks good for thursday morning. taking a look at some areas we normally see congested antioch to concord. 43 minutes, which is normal for this time of the morning. but we don't see any other delays there. taking a look at westbound 80 crockett to the maze. 27 minute commute. remember once you get to that may's onto that bay bridge, it's going to be about a 24 minute commute into the

>> and work at the port of oakland was canceled into anticipation of these protests. groups like the arab resource and organizing center claimed victory with a rally at the west oakland bart station yesterday afternoon. they say stopping the work keeps businesses at the port from making millions of dollars. they also say that money supports israel and its genocide in gaza. >> our eyes or laser focus and does the right and we're going to continue to show up with our from the universities to the port, to our government, to demand from israel to demand an to united states government and their support for israel's ongoing genocide of palestinians in gaza. >> groups also rallied outside of oakland city hall in support of workers rights and demanding a cease-fire in gaza. they say there's a connection between organized labor and standing up for social justice. in san francisco. youth activists now on their 3rd attempt to try to

lower the voting age to 16 so that they can participate in local elections. >> the idea is actually gaining some support this year among community leaders. youth commission members say that this measure is meant to increase engagement overall in local elections. >> we began at a time when young people are still in high school. i still at home and not able to have that support network and makes it much more likely that they're going to continue being boat ads and make it happen much. alliance. they have proven that they are ready to vote and they have the skills needed to vote. but that's the core cognition skills that they need. what the lived experiences that young people have, whether it's taking care of family, whether it's working up to 40 hours a week and paying taxes, they meet many of the threshold to be considered necessary in order to the voters. and they do have a direct stake in the outcome elections. >> so growing up. i been around a lot of youth organizers who are very in tuned their community, their

leading rallies regarding school safety, addressing assault and harassment in schools. and amongst and for lgbtq youth population. so they are very much in the front lines. >> well, similar measures failed to pass back in 2016. another one failed in low by a smaller margin. so there is gaining support over the years whether the measure will appear on this year's ballot is still being decided. the commission chair ewan barker plummer, says the decision to introduce the measure to the board of supervisors will be made some time here in the coming weeks. >> coming up on the kron 4 morning news. thousands are being dropped from their home realtors say this will impact

>> we're back at 7.25. in the north bay, an ambulance was stolen in santa rosa while paramedics were at the scene of a medical emergency. so let walk you through what happened. this was just before 8.45 last night. it was on 4th street. this is actually a photograph of the ambulance. the sonoma county fire district says that ambulance paramedic was with the patient while an emt was in the back of the ambulance. and that's when they say the patients suddenly ran to the ambulance, jumped in the driver's seat sped off with the emt. still in the back. police say they used spike strips ultimately to stop the ambulance. they eventually took that. patients slash suspect into custody. well, 10 people have been sighted in the north bay for overcharging customers for contract work as much as $50,000. in some cases, this

is a picture from one of the sting operations conducted by law enforcement up in marin and sonoma counties last month. officials say all of the people cited are unlicensed contractors. and according to the contractors, state license port, unlicensed contractors have a charge limit of $500, but obviously these people went way over that. >> 7.26. now and in the east bay, the original creator of free comic book day. officially hosting the event for the last time every year on may. 4th flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord celebrates free comic book day a day where you guessed it, free comics are given out to the public. the event was founded back in 2002 by the owner of the store, joe field and grew in popularity internationally to include 2000 other comic book stores. but even with the success, the store's future in concord is uncertain. fields says he is trying to find a new home for flying colors, but he's still isn't exactly sure where the final flying colors comics

overnight and look outside at what it's looking like downtown san francisco. not a cloud in the sky out there. beautiful, clear morning. now i'm expecting tomorrow a little bit of marine layer and fog to slip back in. we're seeing some of that forming upon the mendocino coast line right now. and that's likely to push our direction into the start of your friday tomorrow, winds breezy a step in santa rosa, a little breezy around half moon bay, too enough for some gale warnings to continue on our coastal areas. temperatures are in the 40's to 50's right now for most spots, livermore and free month. some of our cooler areas at 48 degrees right now. oakland, you're sitting at 51 currently later on today. we've got another day with some low 80's for inland areas. a lot of 70's along the bay shore, plenty of sunshine, pretty a bill today and tomorrow. after that, though, a wintery return this weekend, which i'll get to your full forecast. michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. it's 7.31. if you're heading out this morning and you're using 8.80, will those southbound lanes are little bit congested right now? we're

seeing some residual delays near the stevenson boulevard. and then before that in fremont, there's a traffic collision that's causing some commotion to the left. lane is currently blocked off and closed. and you can that backup even over towards the union city. officials with chp say they are working to try to get that cleared out. but if you're heading out this morning, keep that in mind. taking a look at the bay bridge right now. it's an 18 minute commute into the city. those metering lights are on. a look at the san mateo bridge. 25 minutes commute on to the peninsula. look at the richmond. sandra fell bridge. it's only a 14 minute commute over that which pretty normal for this time of the morning. and look at the golden gate bridge. well, it's a 30 minute commute into the city. i will send it back to you, too. >> michael, thank you. 7.32 is the time. and as we know, alameda county district attorney pamela price is one step closer to a recall election. the questions still outstanding is when that election will be. kron four's dan kerman talks with legal experts about prices prospects and how a lawsuit might affect the recall. >> so rivers are held pfizer

merck, his supervisor, all right, kirsten, yes, president island, yes. motion passes with alameda county supervisors voting to accept ballot signatures as certified by the registrar of voters. >> the attempt to recall district attorney pamela price moves forward, creating an ever more uncertain future for price. 61% of recalls nationwide in this time period resulted in removal, cost up 6% or so have resulted in resignation before the recall. so they are very successful as a rule. joshua spivak is a senior research fellow at berkeley laws, california constitution center. he says while recalls overall tend to be successful, it's more of a 50, 50 split in california. alameda county supervisor still have to decide whether to call a special election or let the recall happened during november's general election. spivak says that could impact

the outcome. they seem to survive better when it's a special election. in a statement prices, if a recall takes place, it should happen during the november general election. but she maintains the recall is illegal because the county registrar of voters didn't follow its own charter by allowing more than 10 days to count signatures and by allowing out of county residents to gather those signatures. but so far her campaign is not filed a lawsuit against the county. i will support this motion and hopes >> that occasion is filed. so he get clear direction its meeting tuesday. one supervisor hope the lawsuit would happen. so a judge could weigh in. but legal experts say even if that happens, it's unlikely prices campaign would be successful. i believe that the end of the judges unlikely to say that the board was wrong when it chose to follow state law rather county ordinances. alameda county supervisors will set a date

for the recall at a special meeting on may 14th. dan kerman kron. 4 news. thank you, dan. thousands of homeowners in orinda are set to lose their insurance when state farm ends its coverage this summer. now a lot of them are scrambling to find new insurers, state farm first announced in march that they would be dropping 72,000 property insurance policies in california, mainly in areas prone to wildfires. a realtor in orinda is recommending state farm customers to sign up for the california fair plan. this just a program is for california residents and businesses in urban and rural areas who can't get insurance through a regular insurance company. state farm customers orinda native david anderson says he's investigating his options. workers, as i'm learning about the california fair let's talk in august. they'll give us enough time to. >> can either. >> state department of insurance says the agency has experts ready to assist affected state farm customers.

>> well, union city police now are asking the community for their help in finding a teenage girl has been missing since wednesday. you see a picture over here. this is at least gonzales. she's 15 years old, stands about 4 feet. 8 inches tall. weighs about 120 pounds. she was last seen saturday at about 11 in the morning at james logan high school in union city. gonzales was believed to be wearing a black jordan brand sweatshirt and black jordan tennis shoes. anybody has any information about her whereabouts, please call 9-1-1. reach out. union city police department. sonoma-marin area rail transit system or smart for short has recorded a record breaking ridership. in the 18 agency's history. that's how big this is. smart reported more than 80,000 passengers just for the month of april. now, smart attributes these bigger numbers to the recent changes offering free rides to people under the age of 18 and over the age of 65 riders. this year have eliminated more than

17 million car driven miles. and the agency said, quote, smart offers a greener and more convenient way to travel and is connected communities helping economic development. 7.36. the time and on the peninsula. daily city toy store owner is now hoping that police can find them and took advantage of him and stole a toy with more than $200. so take a look at the surveillance video. the customer at this westlake shopping center toy store asked the owner to grab a toy from behind the counter when he does look. the customer runs off with a $200 toy that was there in front of them. that is what happened. so again, the owner is hoping the daly city police can find who this person is. we did reach out to the police department. haven't heard back yet. but if you recognize who this person is contact police. 7.37. now and from your local election headquarters. we continue our coverage of the top candidates. >> running for san francisco's mayor. yeah. and then a move in to sup aided by political

insiders. the board of supervisors president aaron peskin. >> announced his candidacy as we know and proper. stephanie lin had a chance to sat down with him and talk about why voters should vote for. ip>> san francisco aaron peskin is going to look like a caring city gets things candidate aaron peskin projecting confidence as he enters the race for mayor. i've stood up for safety, stood up against hate crimes. the president of the board of tested lawmaker entrenched in the rough and tumble world of city politics for more than 2 decades representing high-profile areas like chinatown, fishermen's, wharf, union square and the financial district. we need a neighborhood mayor with experience to rebuild our city. >> from the ground up. >> his past battles with sobriety now part of his campaign message. i know something about recovery of san francisco is going to recover. let's bring positivity to this i'm tired

of and in a race dominated by centrist democrats, jostling for the spotlight. could peskin is distinctly progressive stance, seized the attention of voters being progressive has really been about listening to and bringing governmental action to folks who need the government the most. we need a leader will fix our city for everyone. >> not one who are in it for the many. >> to please a wealthy outlining 18 policy proposals including increased police staffing, expanded red control and notably 15,000 new affordable homes using tax deferred financing. the city has a lot of luxury housing and the city has also been able to maintain singer as can see hotels for the poor service. but missing middle needs to be addressed. pushing back against critics who accuse him of blocking housing development. the ordinance is finally next item earlier this year. city supervisors passed

county firefighters are continuing the next phase. >> of a 3 million dollar project to stop future wildfires. it's called a fuel break break project where contra costa fire crews work to clear overgrown and dry vegetation to try to limit the spread of wildfires. work began in ross more and around sections of lafayette last july, the 3 million dollar project funded by cal fire is intended to save lives and property within 190 acre area. >> we're doing our preparedness before increased. fire season really kicks off. we're asking residents say make sure space is around the houses. >> this fuel break project will continue for the next few weeks. well, later this morning, president joe biden is expected to sign proclamations to expand to

national monuments here in california. one is for the san gabriel mountain mountains, national monument with an expansion of 110,000 acres. there. he's also expanding the parameters are the perimeters of the berryessa snow mountain national monument by 13,000 acres. both of these were originally designated by president barack obama. the administration has set a target of preserving 30% of american lands and waters by the year 2030, and exact time on when the proclamations will be signed. hasn't been released just yet. well, the department of water resources conducted its 5th snow survey of the season up at phillips station and a special guest. joining them. out there in the background. it's not every year that the dwr conduct snow surveys in may 9 out of the last 24 seasons haven't had enough snow coverage for that to happen. but this year there was the dwr measure, 2 inches of snow depth yesterday and one inch of water content, which is about 8% of average from a out there phillips

shows you that our next storm system isn't too far away. right now, the low that is dragging in this colder air is centered up in the gulf of alaska. that cold air plunges into the bay overnight from friday night into saturday morning and by saturday itself, widespread showers for the bay and snow up in the sierra nevada and at some fairly low elevations, especially considering what time of year we're talking now for the bay area. we could see upwards of an inch of snow on the north coast anywhere between 3 quarters of an inch to possibly even elsewhere. if we do see these numbers coming to fruition, this will in many cases exceed our average monthly rainfall for may in just one day. so this is a big system for sure. future cast of snowfall. total shows a couple of feet in the upper elevations of the sierra. if you're traveling on saturday, anticipate chain controls in effect. now we will be looking at today as a warm wind. a lot of 70's on the map. couple of low 80's as well for areas like conquered antioch and napa tomorrow could see

another 80 likely to be just a little bit cooler. a huge cool down into saturday only be in the low 60's and the warmest as that rain and mountain snow makes its way in michael. >> thanks, john. and good morning, everyone. it is 7.48. taking a look at the roads right now. we are seeing some delays over on 8.80, those southbound lanes. there was 2 accidents. both have actually been cleared up. but we're seeing a lot of residual delays. it's in the fremont area. one of them is in the stevenson boulevard. and then right before that. so keep that in mind if you're heading out because you are going to see some of those drive times be a little exaggerated to say the least. and you can see san leandro to milpitas. 49 minutes livermore to dublin, 60 minutes, dublin to fremont. 29 actually climbed up to 53 minutes. stanley under to milpitas and then milpitas to sunnyvale. 12 you're using 8.80, that southbound lanes. just keep that in mind. taking a look at the bay bridge right now. 19 minute commute from the maze over into the city. this metering lights are on richmond, sandra fell bridge.

it's a 14 minute commute right now. the san mateo bridge. it's a 25 minute commute on to the peninsula. things are moving smoothly there. taking a look over antioch area. if you're heading towards conquered, it's 45 minutes. there's no delays or anything there. that's just that normal morning traffic that we see westbound 80 crockett to the maze. 38 minute commute. you're using eastbound 80. there's actually 2 different there near the berkeley and richmond area. so keep that in mind. but those are getting cleared out within the next 15 minutes or so. according to chp. and lastly, taking a look at those in walnut creek heading over to 5.80. it is a 16 minute commute from there to fight. it will send it back to 2. >> all right, michael, thank you. 7 50's the time. and it's been one year since governor gavin newsom ordered the national guard and the highway patrol to step in and help san francisco crackdown on drug dealing in the tenderloin kron four's justine waltman breaks down to see if the numbers have made a difference. >> when this operation started

accidental overdose deaths in san francisco are up more than 40% between january and march of last year, 200 victims died from accidental overdoses, mostly from fentanyl and mostly in the tenderloin increased patrols in that neighborhood are apparently leading to more products being seized, but it might not be making much of a dent in death prevention. >> more than 42 pounds seized in the roughly 10 block radius. that is san francisco's tenderloin district. the governor's office and law enforcement agencies are celebrating what they consider to be a positive milestone in a public safety partnership. it was one year ago on may first 2023 when the governor authorized the california highway patrol and national guard to crack down on drug dealing in the city. their goal to target traffickers disrupt the dealers and sees the supply. since then, the joint task force has issued more than 6200 citations arrested. more

than 500 people recovered more than 100 stolen vehicles. and most importantly to their mission, captured nearly 700 poundseof fentanyl in total. that's enough to kill almost half the country. city leaders are praising the progress made in the first year of this partnership. police chief bill scott says the amount of fentanyl pulled off the street is, quote, unprecedented and that they're going to continue to crack down on dealing in the statement. district attorney brooke jenkins says, quote, the resources that the governor provided san francisco to ramp up our efforts to disrupt and dismantle open air drug markets has been invaluable working together. we're making a difference in the tenderloin drug conference cations maybe at unprecedented levels. however, when you look at drug overdose deaths, there's not much difference. this partnership program between agencies was initially announced just last year after san francisco announced accidental deaths from drug use went up 40% between
