the campus steps. there are. these are student demonstrators all demanding immediate cease-fire in gaza. thank you so much for joining us on kron. 4 news at 10. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne right now. there is a heavy police presence at ucla and unlawful assembly has been declared there and demonstrators have told to disperse, but >> many are staying put refusing to leave. you can see officers in riot gear earlier tonight surrounding the area where the group of students gathered. the response happening after a violent crash overnight last night between pro-palestinian demonstrators and counter protesters. oh, my god. this is the. chaotic scene that unfolded overnight. counter protesters throwing fireworks and bricks into encampments and even attacked pro-palestine demonstrators. at least 15 protesters here

were hurt. police showed up about 2 hours into the incident. but i didn't make any arrests. school officials canceled all classes today in response tonight, many ucla students, they are accusing the school and the city of not doing enough to keep them safe. >> during this entire period and what i was the police stood by. on sidelines and last as me and my fellow protesters, what maced were struck with heavy plastic cones were struck with rocks, were struck with batteries. i was struck with firecrackers heavy, heavy. our taylor. >> campus safety left within minutes. external security, the university hired for backup, watched films and laughed on the side as the immediate danger inflicted upon us escalated. >> here's another live picture, an aerial view from a chopper overhead ucla. lapd

has declared a tactical alert. meaning officers are on standby in case they're needed to deal with any violent situation that may develop there. la county sheriff's office also on the scene as well as the california highway patrol. you can see there is a large encampment on the campus. ellie police first home protesters dispersed just a couple of hours ago. about 8 o'clock tonight. >> meantime, here in the bay area, university campuses continue to see demonstrations for the people of gaza. the latest group to join the effort are students at santa clara university. our kron 4 noelle bellow joins us now live in the studio with a look at the protest that they held a day-long with other protests all across the bay. noelle. >> ken and vicki, for weeks, demonstrators across the country and here in the bay area have been demanding the universities divest from

israeli linked companies, students and faculty at santa clara university holding their own protest and teach. and today where a staff joined them. we spoke with organizers who say they felt it was important to put the event together and stand in solidarity, solidarity with palestinians. >> we want to also call for change on campus in terms of having a university divest from any investments they have supporting the iowa. currently. we work closely with them to ensure that the goals of their activity could be met. at the same time, the university can ensure a safe environment given everything that's going on across the country. >> as i mentioned, some faculty and staff joined those student protesters over at u c berkeley today as well. this is the largest demonstration in the bay area with more than 100 tents outside sproul hall. now a spokesperson for berkeley says there have been no disruptions operations and no violence. >> that every student no matter who they are. what they believe in. has a right to feel. respected. welcome in

the true sense of belonging. >> some jewish students, however, disagree. they say their safety has not been a priority for several months. tension on campus has gotten the attention of the bay area, jewish community relations council. the ceo says non students are often at fault for escalating situations there. and he's asking uc berkeley not to allow them on campus. meantime, it's been nearly a week since student protesters created an encampment at stanford university. overall students feel it's been peaceful, but some tell us the fear that could change one graduate student we spoke with says they have noticed additional security. >> new cameras for surveillance around the area that is supposed to be for free speech under i demand that is supposed increase safety. however, we face, we feel more and save when they come and they bring cops new to us. basically saying that this is their property and that we should leave. he says

happened multiple times during the morning. >> kron 4 did reach out to palo alto police who say they have not provided any assistance to to the university at this time. meantime, house lawmakers in dc are responding to the student protest movement by passing legislation to expand the definition of anti-semitism. it now goes to the senate if it's passed and signed into law, the bill would broaden the legal definition of anti-semitism to include the targeting of the state of israel. critics say the move would have a chilling effect on free speech throughout college campuses. can. >> all right. well, thank you. hundreds of protesters also marched in oakland kron four's dan thorn talked with organizers say today's rally. they consider to be a win. groups that this rally at the west oakland bart station claiming victory wednesday, businesses at the port of oakland canceled all work in anticipation of labor and

to us all along the immediate coastline, not much. and then well, see plenty of sunshine by 8 o'clock all across the board from the coast of the valley. as you can see, plenty of sun. the temperatures starting to warm up by 10, though those temperatures really start to kick it into gear. upper 60's into the valleys. you're talking mid to upper 60's in the bay. even 60's along the coast. more than 1500 hotel workers and janitors marched the streets of downtown san francisco demanding higher pay. >> and better health care. kron four's. sara stinson joins us now live from the city with details on that. sarah. >> hotel workers in janitors said they wanted to make a statement to their employers and that's what they did by marching on city streets, shutting block by block down and even marching by some of those downtown san francisco

who tells right as the evening commute was starting to pick up. >> hundreds of hotel workers and janitors march through downtown san francisco wednesday afternoon, demanding more from their employers. >> so power we show you we will show them that at this we united workers gathered at union square and marched down to market street, shutting down streets in suspending muni service on geary street. many held up signs that read one job should be enough. a lot of our folks work multiple jobs. they have to do. that is the tapia is the president of the union unite here local 2, she says since the pandemic, several hotels cut hours, we really believe that you should be able to work one job have to have the basic things that your having. you know, basically fair market >> current contracts are set

want to like prioritize spreading education about this, especially as our institutions aren't doing anything. >> we've reached out to oakland unified for a comment but have yet to hear back. >> 16 17 year-old in oakland and berkeley will finally get a chance to vote in school board the alameda county board of supervisors approved adding 6 positions in the registrar of voters office. the new staff will help to provide year-round support for youth voting in san francisco, youth activists are on their 3rd attempt to try to lower the voting age to 16 kron. grant lodes joins us now from the newsroom. >> after talking with members of the city's used commission grant. that's right, ken, the idea here is gaining support among community leaders to back another attempt to pass a measure that would grant. >> 16 year olds in san francisco, the right to vote in local elections. youth commission members. i talked to say the measure is meant to increase engagement overall in local elections.

>> we began at a time when young people are still in high school. i still at home and not able to i have that support network and makes it much more likely that they're going to continue being boat ads and make it happen. much family and their lots. they have proven that they are ready to vote and they have the skills needed to vote. but that's the core cognition skills that they need. what the lived experiences that young people have, whether it's taking care of family, whether it's working up to 40 hours a week and paying taxes, they meet many of the threshold to be considered necessary in order to the voters. and they do have a direct stake in the outcome elections. >> so growing up. i been around a lot of youth organizers who are very in tuned their community, their leading rallies regarding school safety, addressing assault and harassment in schools and amongst and for lgbtq youth population. so they are very much in the front lines.

>> the similar measures to lower the voting age failed to pass in 2016 and failed again. but by a smaller margin in 2020. so it would seem that this is gaining support. now, whether this measure will appear on this year's ballot in november is still being decided. the commission chair, the first person we heard from there, ewan barker plummer tells me the decision to introduce the measure to the board of supervisors in san francisco will be made soon in the coming weeks. we'll keep you posted there. ken and vicki, back to you. all right, we don't county da pamela price. one step closer. >> to a recall election. the question remains about when that election would be held. kron four's dan kerman talked with legal experts about prices prospects and how a lawsuit might affect the recall. >> supervisor pfizer merck, his supervisor, 10. all right, kirsten, yes, president island, yes.

>> motion with alameda county supervisors voting to accept ballot signatures as certified by the registrar of voters. the attempt to recall district attorney pamela price moves forward, creating an ever more uncertain future for price. 61% of recalls nationwide in this time period resulted in removal. cause an uptick, 6% or so. puzzle to resignation before the recall. so they are very successful as a rule. joshua spivak is a senior research fellow at berkeley laws, california constitution center. he says while recalls overall tend to be successful, it's more of a 50, 50 split in california. alameda county supervisor still have to decide whether to call a special election or let the recall happened during november's general election. spivak says that could impact the outcome. they seem to survive better when it's a special election. in a statement prices, if a recall takes place, it should happen during the november general election. but she maintains the recall is illegal because

the county registrar of voters didn't follow its own charter by allowing more than 10 days to count signatures and by allowing out of county residents to gather those signatures. but so far her campaign is not filed a lawsuit against the county. i will support this motion and hopes >> that occasion is filed. so he get clear direction its meeting tuesday. one supervisor hope the lawsuit would happen. so a judge could weigh in. but legal experts say even if that happens, it's unlikely prices campaign would be successful. i believe that at the end of the judges unlikely to say that the board was wrong when it chose to follow state law rather county ordinances. alameda county supervisors will set a date for the recall at a special meeting on may 14th. dan kerman kron. 4 news in contra costa county. firefighters are clearing overgrown and dry vegetation before the fire season kicks into full swing.

yes, our to do its work again overnight. tonight up, cool us down just a bit. and overall high pressure in control. but we've got a storm system just to the north here. that's going help to break down that ridge of high pressure just enough to bring back probably a little fog along the coastline by tomorrow afternoon. as that ridge starts to weaken somewhat. so tomorrow, i think late in the day, couple patches of fog creeping along the coastline will be a little bit more breezy out toward the beaches. still, it's going to be warm in the bay in the valleys, looking very nice as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. so, yeah, you're looking good out there. temperatures tomorrow. how about 77 degrees in san jose and sunny and bright all day long. not much in the way of cloud cover it all. oakland, 73 degrees, sunny and beautiful, too. and then along the coastline san francisco, kind of a split. you're gonna see temperatures there in the mid 60's. it will be sunny, but out toward the sunset probably going to see a couple patches of fog in the show late in the day along the coastline and it will be breezy toward the afternoon. we have a chance rain in the forecast who will talk more about that coming up with your 10 to 10. the few minutes that

go to loveshriners.org >> now at 10, 30, it's been one year since governor newsom ordered the national guard and the highway patrol to step in and help san francisco police crackdown on drug dealing in the tenderloin kron four's justine waltman breaks down the numbers to see if it's made a difference. >> when this operation started accidental overdose deaths in san francisco are up more than 40%. >> between january and march of last year, 200 victims died from accidental overdoses, mostly from fentanyl and mostly in the tenderloin

increased patrols in that neighborhood are apparently leading to more product being seized, but it might not be making much of a dent in death prevention. >> more than 42 pounds seized in the roughly 10 block radius. that is san francisco's tenderloin district. the governor's office and law enforcement agencies are celebrating what they consider to be a positive milestone in a public safety partnership. it was one year ago on may first 2023 when the governor authorized the california highway patrol and national guard to crack down on drug dealing in the city. their goal to target traffickers disrupt the dealers and sees the supply. since then, the joint task force has issued more than 6200 citations arrested. more than 500 people recovered more than 100 stolen vehicles. and most importantly to their mission, captured nearly 700 pounds of fentanyl in total. that's enough to kill almost

half the country. city leaders are praising the progress made in the first year of this partnership. police chief bill scott says the amount of fentanyl pulled off the street is, quote, unprecedented and that they're going to continue to crack down on dealing in the statement. district attorney brooke jenkins says, quote, the resources that the governor provided san francisco to ramp up our efforts to disrupt and dismantle open air drug markets has been invaluable working together. we're making a difference in the tenderloin drug conference cations maybe at unprecedented levels. however, when you look at drug overdose deaths, there's not much difference. this partnership program between agencies was initially announced just last year after san francisco announced accidental deaths from drug use went up 40% between january and march of 2023. in that period, 204 people died from an accidental overdose in san francisco. that's according to the medical examiner's office. compare that to the same period this

year. deaths are down, but not by much so far this year, there have been just 5 fewer deaths from accidental overdoses. the governor's office is also crediting the first year of this partnership for other significant crime statistic improvements in san francisco. >> for the 1st quarter of this year, property crime is down more than 30% and violent crime is down almost 15% in the newsroom. i'm justine waldman. kron. 4 news. >> the benicia unified school district is facing a lawsuit claiming the district swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. a former teacher matthew shelton has been charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. attorneys say shelton worked in elementary schools for more than a decade. and when accusations surfaced at one school, shelton resigned and switch to another school. the lawsuit accuses the district of negligent hiring and adds that the principal was allegedly friends with shelton and his wife.

>> homeowners are scrambling to try and find new insurance to protect their homes. after state farm announced that they're going to be dropping dem this summer. so many of those owners, they they live in the east bay. >> online and everything people are just asking, you know, who will ensure us? where can we get insurance? and i just don't know people who have single-family homes, you know, who don't have any coverage or safety. i'm not really sure whatmthey're supposed to do. >> state farm says it soaring costs, the increasing risk of wildfires plus outdated regulations are some of the reasons that it will not be renewing the policy. i policies of thousands of homes. the state department of insurance says the agency has experts ready to assist affected customers. realtors say this home insurance crisis well impact the real estate market has insurance is a key requirement to carry a mortgage for a home. whether as we take a live look outside quite tower in the dark there

the afternoon couple patches of fog along the coastline. friday. a few more clouds come in but staying dry. but you can see all that green mass coming in. and there you go. there's your saturday morning. the timing on this has moved up. that's usually a good sign that is coming pretty vigorous front as it moves on by 2. in fact, look at some of the forecast. rain just under an inch of rain in half moon bay, maybe about an inch in the santa cruz acosta ranges will get more than that. that is a pretty decent storm, especially for this time of year. all right, the door right now, we've got some fairly quiet conditions out across the bridge. it is clear out there as well. i think as we head toward tomorrow afternoon, a nice day, although these numbers going back up just a little bit, going to be a little more breezy along the coastline tomorrow that patchy fog likely to form too. inside the bay are looking good. temperatures warming up down the peninsula. 72 in redwood city, the south bay, lots of 70's by tomorrow afternoon. couple low 80's still well inland. the temperatures are going start to back off in spots, especially along the coastline and just inside the bay. so very comfortable temperatures running above the average for tomorrow. then we look at you can attend and

president aaron peskin announced his candidacy the progressive shaking up race. it's dominated by moderates. scrum for stephanie lynn sat down with peskin about why voters should trust him to lead the city. >> san francisco aaron peskin is going to look like a caring city gets things candidate aaron peskin projecting confidence as he enters the race for mayor. i've stood up for safety, stood up against hate crimes. the president of the board of tested lawmaker entrenched in the rough and tumble world of city politics for more than 2 decades representing high-profile areas like chinatown, fishermen's, wharf, union square and the financial district. we need a neighborhood mayor with experience to rebuild our city. >> from the ground up. >> his past battles with sobriety now part of his campaign message. i know something about recovery of san francisco is going to recover. let's bring positivity to this i'm tired

of and in a race dominated by centrist democrats, jostling for the spotlight. could peskin is distinctly progressive stance, seized the attention of voters being progressive has really been about listening to and bringing governmental action to folks who need the government the most. we need a leader will fix our city for everyone. >> not one who are in it for the many. >> to please a wealthy outlining 18 policy proposals including increased police staffing, expanded red control and notably 15,000 new affordable homes using tax deferred financing. the city has a lot of luxury housing and the city has also been able to maintain singer as can see hotels for the poor service. but missing middle needs to be addressed. pushing back against critics who accuse him of blocking housing development. the ordinance is finally next item earlier this year. city supervisors passed

haskins measure imposing density limits in several historic neighborhoods. our neighborhoods are the envy of people around the world. it's not a one size fits all solution on the fentanyl crisis. i support arresting anybody who deals fentanyl or other life-threatening drugs. drug users. on the other hand. >> need. >> surfaces. i asked him if he agreed with challenger mark farrell's promised to clear the city's homeless encampments in 6 months. false or fake promises. we need a place for those people to go because what happens in an encampment, sweet is people are pushed from one neighborhood to another. that is not a solution. a solution is 2000 shelter beds and i have a plan for that. the great ideas. but why were you able to achieve them as the president? the board of supervisor supervisors can pass laws but the captain of the team, the quarterback of the team in san francisco is mayor.
