at college campuses here in the bay area as the situation is also intensifying across the country. >> these demonstrations coinciding with today's may day labor rallies, the annual call to improve worker conditions and wages. thanks for joining us here on kron for news at 5. >> i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus throughout the day today. we have seen these rallies across the bay area. many of them are also calling for an end to the war in gaza. >> one is happening in oakland right now. kron four's dan thorn joining us live from that demonstration dam. >> yeah, well, we're out here at west oakland bart station, where the rally is just sort of wrapping up. but this was looked at as a victory -ally. there are some people that are still hanging out here in the reason why they're calling it a victory rally was plans were to have this group go over to the port of oakland and to stop the port of oakland from generating money that they say the united states uses to send to israel in what they call a

genocide that's going on in this group out here didn't have to go to the port of oakland because the port of oakland had closed off work to workers today. so again, they called a victory because they did, you know, they didn't have to go over but the group out here did organize. they had some union leaders. they had several other group leaders here speaking about the situation that's going on in some of them saying that it's important to understand that made a has a significant not only for workers, but also for the pro palestinian movement and the movement again, what they're calling it. genocide in gaza. they say that there is a connection between the movement that's happening right now. and also historically what has happened for union groups and for workers across this country, the average rent, the arab resource and organizing center was planning on having one of the big union leaders here earlier. they ended up getting stuck in traffic, but they will be sharing a statement with us about the situation that's going on. they also say of all the movements that have

been happening across the country college in front of businesses in cities is out showing that beginning to win this fight. they're beginning to win popular opinion by saying that what's going on in gaza is wrong. and again, these groups coming out here. they are planning to continue to march and to rally in till the cease-fire gets matt and the bombing stops >> in gaza and they say that they're not going to stop until it comes to that point. and they're hoping to put pressure on not only local cities but also on congress and ultimately the president united states stop backing israel in this we're, of course, going to keep you updated on what happens throughout the night. the plan right now, though, is to continue to rally here for a little bit longer. and then there may be some movement to some other locations, but a victory for them that they're calling because they're no longer having to go to the port of oakland, which had to close off to our workers today, which was probably an estimated loss of around 12 million dollars, they say

will not be going to israel. grab back to you. >> well, it does seem like it's peaceful out there. dan, thank you. we can't say it's peaceful in other areas having these demonstrations classes at ucla were canceled today after chaos erupted on the campus overnight. pro-palestinian protesters there clashing with counter-protesters, forcing the university to call in police in riot gear. it follows the chaotic scene at columbia university last night. nypd cleared out hamilton hall where protesters were barricaded inside about 300 protesters were arrested for weeks. now, demonstrators there have demanded the university divest from israeli linked companies. the nypd will maintain presence on campus until mid-may at columbia university here in the bay area. we're, of course, keeping an eye on the growing protests as well. kron four's rob nesbitt is live at u c berkeley tonight as more and more tense are being set up there. >> we'll check in with rob momentarily. first, though,

kron four's lezla gooden is at stanford where students demonstrating there say they're concerned about how the school might punish them. good evening, leslie. >> yes, good evening. it's been very peaceful here. very quiet throughout the day, students have been hosting workshops for each other, educate each other on what you do if they are possibly detain. and also they've gotten some support from faculty as well. and, you know, if you take a look right here, it's been like this for majority of the evening. very quiet and a little empty, too. and i did talk to several students who say that, you know, they want to remain this peaceful environment, but they want to make sure that their voices are being heard. and, you know, they say that they also have noticed increased security measures as well. they additional cameras around the encampment, but also police officers, security walking around, especially in the we'll have more information. we'll hear from

the students coming up at 6. back to you. all. plus thank you. >> meantime, students and faculty at santa clara university held their own protests and teach n today in solidarity with the palestinian demonstrations. we spoke with organizers who say they felt it was important for them to put the event together. >> we want to also call for change on campus in terms of having a university divest from any investments they have supporting the iowa. currently. we work closely with them to ensure that the goals of their activity could be met. at the same time, the university can ensure a safe environment given everything that's going on across the country. >> that protest there at santa clara will go until 8 o'clock tonight, the largest campus protest in the bay area is that uc berkeley where more than 100 tents are set up in front of sproul hall. so far, no one there has been arrested. however. >> jewish students we talked to say they have been are asked by some of the protesters in kron four's rob nesbitt joins us live in the

newsroom with more on that part of the story. rob, the protests at uc berkeley have also remained peaceful compared to what we have seen in other parts of the country. but talk to students in the jewish community and they'll say safety is not a priority for the university. >> with hundreds of tents as their backdrop, faculty and staff at uc berkeley joins student protesters wednesday. they're calling on the university to stop investing in companies that work with israel, especially they are involved in making weapons of war. spokesperson for the university dan mogulof says so far there have been no disruptions to operations and no violence. >> that every student no matter who they are. what they believe in. has a right to feel. respected. welcome in a true sense of belonging jewish students on campus tend to disagree saying their safety has not been a priority for several scary. >> i nathan. yeah. fa wears a star of david necklace with pride that says free palestine

protesters become hostile with him. >> once they realize he's to see what's going experiences like that on college campuses have gotten the attention of the jewish community relations council bay area ceo tyler gregory says non students are often fault for escalating tensions. >> asking uc berkeley not to allow them into encampments on campus. we also want to make sure that. >> threatening blocking violence. of course, intimidation, that those kind of tactics are banned and that those folks be removed as well. chicago. >> not much class time left that uc berkeley this week is a study week next week as finals with graduation scheduled for may. 11th reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. thank you, rob. cal, poly humboldt has decided to hold a

modified graduation ceremony after dozens of people. >> were arrested there while protesting the war. the ceremony will be held saturday. may 11th. the university has announced a hard closure of that campus until may 10th because of the protests. the cal state university system as a whole has responded to the demonstrations. officials say they do not intend to alter existing investment policies related to israel or the israel-hamas conflict saying, quote, csu investments provide a stable revenue stream that benefits our students and faculty and supports our critical campus facilities, scholarships and other key elements of our educational mission. the divestmen of this sort impinges on the academic freedom of our students and faculty and the unfettered exchange of ideas on our campuses. >> high school students also getting in on this at oakland, technical high school students walked out of class today protesting the conflict in

gaza, calling for a cease-fire. here's what one of the organizers had to say. >> we want to show solidarity with all the universities who have been, you know, putting their like putting themselves on the line and especially during final and we really want to like prioritize spreading education about this, especially as our institutions aren't doing anything. >> we did reach out to the oakland unified school district for comment this afternoon. but we have so far not heard back. >> richmond city council members have agreed to stop investing in companies they say are involved in israel's violations of palestinian rights council members passed the resolution last night. richmond will divest from an agreed upon list of companies, including airbnb, microsoft, motorola, among others. last october, richmond city council members passed a resolution affirming the city support and solidarity with the palestinian people of gaza and stay with kron 4 on air and

>> welcome back with the alameda county district attorney pamela price. one step closer to a recalled. the question remains, will it be a special election or will it be held during the november election? tonight, kron four's dan kerman spoke to legal experts about prices prospects and how lawsuit may affect the next steps to reverse or help >> pfizer, merck, his supervisor, all right, kirsten, yes, president island, yes. motion passes with alameda county supervisors voting to accept ballot signatures as certified by the registrar of voters. >> the attempt to recall district attorney pamela price moves forward, creating an ever more uncertain future for price. 61% of recalls nationwide in this time period resulted in removal, cost up 6% or so have resulted in

resignation before the recall. so they are very successful as a rule. joshua spivak is a senior research fellow at berkeley laws, california constitution center. he says while recalls overall tend to be successful, it's more of a 50, 50 split in california. alameda county supervisor still have to decide whether to call a special election or let the recall happened during november's general election. spivak says that could impact the outcome. they seem to survive better when it's a special election. in a statement prices, if a recall takes place, it should happen during the november general election. but she maintains the recall is illegal because the county registrar of voters didn't follow its own charter by allowing more than 10 days to count signatures and by allowing out of county residents to gather those signatures. but so far her campaign is not filed a lawsuit against the county. i will support this motion and hopes >> that occasion is filed. so he get clear direction its meeting tuesday. one

supervisor hope the lawsuit would happen. so a judge could weigh in. but legal experts say even if that happens, it's unlikely prices campaign would be successful. i believe that the end of the judges unlikely. >> to say that the board was wrong when it chose to follow state law rather county ordinances. >> alameda county supervisors will set a date for the recall. had a special meeting on may 14th. dan kerman kron. 4 news. lawsuit has been filed against the benicia unified school district. we first reported former teacher matthew shelton had been charged on 7 counts of molesting a child. now, a total of 5 students have come forward. attorneys say shelton worked in elementary schools for more than a decade in when accusations surfaced one school, shelton resigned and switch to another school. he's teaching credentials were not suspended until march of 2024,

the suit accuses the school district of negligent hiring and accuses the principle of sweeping students allegations under the rug because the principal was friends with teacher and his wife. >> rattlesnakes. that's the message from east bay park officials as warmer days returned to the bay area. park visitors are being reminded about rattlesnakes becoming more active as they emerge from their winter hibernation if you spot a rattlesnake while you're out and about officials say it's safest to just leave it alone, move away as quickly as possible. if you do get bitten by a rattlesnake, you are advised c% to remain calm. avoid running and get medical help immediately. of course, the weather is basically begging for people to get outside over the last several days conference. lawrence karnow is here with your forecast. hey, lauren certainly is nice and warm around. the bay area was out there for a high today. saw a lot of lizards know but >> you got to watch out for that. if you're headed for the outdoors, the reptiles like the warmer weather to we're going to see that again. i

think as we head toward tomorrow, it's going to be another beautiful day around the bay area. maybe a little breezy in spots, especially along the coastline. temperatures going to be very similar inland. you're talking 70's 80's should be some nice weather out there. looking good over san francisco. you have nice clear skies to see that breeze up above and the flags. but other than that, we're looking good all around tonight. and that's way it's going to stay at least for now temperature wise. how about this? 80 degrees in concord, 80 in santa rosa. 78 right now and warm in livermore 77 in san jose. 68 very pleasant, a little breezy into oakland and 65 degrees in san francisco. winds not as strong as last couple of days, but that's just a general sea breeze kicking in right now. that's not bad at all. in fact of those winds, 18, some 20 mile an hour gusts along the coastline. but that's about the worst of it. otherwise high pressure overhead have another frontal system that's kind of trying to drop over the top of that ridge. that may help just to kick up the winds. i think as we head toward tomorrow afternoon along the coastline. overall, though, hey, if you're stepping out tonight, what a nice evening get out there and enjoy, maybe go for a walk as

the temperatures staying very warm as you head into the evening hours numbers holding up in the 70's and many of the valleys, even inside the bay temperatures in the upper 60's that slowly cooling by about 8 o'clock tonight. but we're going to changes on the way. high pressure bringing us some nice weather tomorrow. by late in the day, though, we'll begin to see a little bit of a change along the coastline. that breeze will start to pick up. we're going to start to see a little patchy fog moving along the coastline. and that will be a sign of a change to start to lead us in toward the weekend. that's where we'll see a drastic change in our weather. back to some rain. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. holds 2. yeah, a lot colder. temperatures going to drop a good, maybe 10, maybe 20 degrees from what we've been enjoying these last couple of days. now. all right. yeah. can't wait to hear about it. okay. thanks, jack. >> households across the bay area are scheduled to be dropped by state farm insurance. this summer is one of the city's at the top of the list as kron four's gayle ong reports this insurance crisis isn't just impacting homeowners, but the real estate industry as well.

>> i think our government has to get involved. this is it's a problem. people need have insurance for their homes were burned or cold around is a realtor at coldwell banker realty basin a city at the top of the list of state farm customers scheduled to be dropped this summer. cold around is not only helping clients navigate the home insurance crisis. just got a text from my neighbor the other day. and he was one of the many homes that have been dropped by state farm by advised him to speak to a reputable broker locally and sorted out with him and get on the list for the fair plan before his termination. the fair plan is available to california residents and businesses in urban and rural areas who cannot obtain insurance to a regular insurance not freaking worry, but you know, state farm customer and they're going to need of. david anderson is also navigating home insurance coverage options for the booker says i'm learning about the california fair let's talk in august. they'll give us enough time to.

>> can anderson is not alone. i was not able to get it state farm. i was also turned down by geico. >> so i'm not really sure what to do. nicole bought a condo in oakland last year and is still searching for home insurance, know online and everything people are just asking, you know, who will ensure us? where can we get insurance? and i just don't know people who have single-family homes, you know, who don't have any coverage or safety. i'm not really sure what they're supposed to do. last month, state farm, the illinois based company and california's largest insurer cited soaring cost the increasing risk of natural disasters like wildfires and outdated regulations as reasons it won't renew the policies of thousands of homes back at coldwell banker realty colder. rome says while deals on homes are still being made. >> this home insurance crisis will impact the real estate market as insurance as a key requirement to carry a mortgage for a home. we have to make sure that the buyers are way or >> and get quotes before we go into contract. so that ideally

enforcement helping to put an end to contracting scams by going undercover to catch unlicensed contractors who are charging above the legal amount officials from marin and sonoma counties say they've cited 10 people in a one-day sting operation. alas months, according to the contractors, state license board, unlicensed contractors have a charge limit of $500. the people caught were charging as much as $15,000. fine for the misdemeanor can cost just as much to avoid falling victim to one of these scams. officials say you should always check for a license. in the east bay. >> about 4 and a half million dollars is going towards improving 2 miles of roads across pittsburgh. the pavement rehab plan will affect a half mile segment of loveridge road from highway for 2, the pittsburg, antioch highway, where west 10th street turns into east 14th street. these improvements are expected to take about 4 to 6

weeks with the majority of work being done overnight. construction will also affect 2 separate portions of east leeland road. crews will be working from bailey road to john henry johnson parkway and from crestview drive to railroad avenue. that project will pick up in a few weeks. >> the oakland ballers are moving forward with a 1.6 million dollar renovation of raimondi park. the official new home for the team city council approving the plan at last night's meeting. the ballers or the bees releasing these new renderings of that park today. executives say the team is eternally grateful to the city residents and fans who helped them make this possible. earlier today we spoke with co-founder brian carmel who shared what fans can expect when the park is finally complete. >> you know, we've got some murals that we're putting in place that are going to be done by local artists. there's going to be local food trucks and their own internal concessions to buy lots lots of different, great ballpark
