scathing review from the oakland auditor. why mayor sheng thao is accused of showing poor leadership. station. >> he's calling for news 2. >> thank you for joining us here on kron for to i'm justine waldman. our top story is the response in the united states to the war between israel and hamas from coast to coast universities across the country are becoming overrun by protest encampments with several going to the point of civil unrest, law enforcement officers had to forcibly clear some of the encampments. in new york city. police arrested about 300 protesters on the campuses of columbia university and city college of new york. officers in riot gear moved in last night to clear out the encampments. the nypd also breached colombia's hamilton hall, which was taken over by protesters yesterday

and for weeks these pro-palestine demonstrators who are their have demanded that their universities divest from israeli links companies. the nypd will maintain its presence on campus until mid-may. and overnight york officers took down a palestinian flag that could raise on the campus flagpole. there and american flag that had been taken down was once again put back up. in the capital. protesters at tulane university in new orleans was cleared. at least 14 people. they're arrested officers for 3 law enforcement agencies moved in after ordering the group today spurs. the university said in a statement that the encampment was an unlawful demonstration. >> sort explosive or firework okay. just a firework >> hey, guys, we've got to go. we've got to go. we've got to go. we've got to go now. >> so a heavy police presence

today, a ucla after violent clashes broke out overnight there between groups of protesters hours after the university declared a pro-palestine encampment unlawful protesters attempting to take down barricades just before midnight fireworks as we saw set off there, people could be seen throwing objects at each other and here in the bay area, the protests are growing. students at santa clara university are now calling for a stop to the war in gaza. they also other demands. we'll turn now to kron four's to justice who is live at the school with the latest there. thanks for joining us. >> i just seen this protest last teach and started around 12, 15 this morning. you can see many of the students still on the long right behind us along with a few faculty members are being told by sun organizers. they plan on holding several events throughout the day, ending everything around 08:00pm tonight. >> we wanted to put on. >> and educational teaching on campus. we want to also call for change on campus in terms of having a university divest from any investments they have

supporting the iowa currently students and faculty at santa clara university holding a protest and teach in on the alameda law on wednesday, students here at the university and college campuses across the nation holding protests in solidarity with palestinians. we spoke with organizers who say they felt it was important for them to put this event together. >> and that the aim to have peaceful protest. >> our biggest also calling for a cease-fire and raising awareness on campus. so that students know to call contact local wraps. get involved, educate themselves in the history. and that is all we can ask for a cease-fire, cease-fire as well as making sure that we're not investing actively supporting this genocide. >> the protest is expected to last until 08:00pm. tonight the university releasing a statement that reads, quote, as an educational institution, the santa clara university respects and supports the rights of all members of our campus community together to express their viewpoints in deeply health concerns. we also are committed to ensuring the safety of all on our campus be being classrooms,

residence halls, attending a protest or engaging in cocula killer activities. teen rosenberger vice provost for student life at santa clara university says soon organizers have been working with the university to ensure a peaceful event. we have been very positive relationship with our student leaders, as they were planning this event. we work closely with them to ensure that the goals of their activity could be met. at the same time, the university can ensure a safe. >> environment given everything that's going on across the country. we have been out here all morning long and i have seen security out here overseeing everything after speaking with soon organizers along with the university. >> they tell me their top priority is safety for everyone in that scene. organizers have had several conversations with the university as well. reporting live to justice kron. 4 news. >> tiffany, thank you. and cal poly humboldt will hold a modified commencement ceremony. this is coming after

dozens of people were arrested while protesting the war in gaza. the ceremony will be held on saturday. may 10th. the university has announced a hard closure of campus until may 10th because of the protest. crews are currently cleaning up after the occupation. did some graffiti. they're also trying to clean up some garbage. the cal state university system says it does not intend to alter existing investment policies related to israel or the israel-hamas conflict. the university system releasing a statement that reads in part csu investments, providera stable revenue stream that benefits our students and faculty and supports our critical campus facilities, scholarships and other key elements of our educational mission, divestment of this work impinges on the academic freedom of our students and faculty and the unfettered exchange of ideas on our campuses. now to the penn slower students are demonstrating at stanford university. they say they're concerned about disciplinary

action from the school. now students are saying that the school sent them disciplinary letters for participating in the protests. but it's unclear how they might be punished. we did reach out to stanford to find out more about what those actions might be we get a response will let you know. and that uc berkeley, more and more tents are being set up as the encampment at sproul plaza grows. it's now in its second week today, faculty and staff are planning on joining in on the protests. the protesters say they're calling on the university to stop investing in companies that work with israel, especially if they're involved in making weapons of war. the demonstrations met with some counter protest, some uc berkeley students showing their support for israel. abbas saying that the encampment and its rhetoric is making them feel unsafe. the outcry for a cease-fire. gaza continues now as it spills over into high schools in the east bay, students participating in the walkout. kron 4 charles clifford has the latest from oakland. well,

here in oakland on wednesday, hundreds of students walked out of class here at oakland, technical high school to protest the war in costa. now these students rallied outside of campus. >> on wednesday afternoon, they are upset about the conflict in gaza between hamas and israel. they are calling for a cease-fire. i talked to one of the organizers of this event. he says that they've been watching what's happening at college campuses across the country and that they wanted to show solidarity with those protests. we want to show solidarity with all the universities who have been. >> you know, putting their like. >> putting themselves on the line and especially during final >> and we really want to like prioritize spreading education about this, especially as our institutions aren't doing anything. now we did reach out to the oakland unified school district for comment on wednesday afternoon. we have so far not heard back from in the east bay, charles clifford kron. 4 news. >> outside of schools, there are rallies and marches

planned across the bay area today for made a video from the citizens app showing one marks that happened just a couple hours ago in the mission. >> it did show some solid area of palestine. we see people are holding up the flag. hundreds of demonstrators from immigrant rights groups, including worker and antiwar organizations walking from the 24 street bart station to city hall in san francisco. they're demanding investments in communities, not war. this is scheduled to last until about now. but people are still being advised th stay away from the area. they want to run into some delays. also an overwhelming majority of americans support israel and its war against hamas. that's according to a new harvard caps, harris poll. the poll showed a stark divide based on age group. in response to this question, 85% of those people who are 45 to 54 support israel. 3 quarters of those. 35 to 44 also said the same. 64% of those. 25 to 34 57% of

people 18 to 24 said that they support israel. the poll also found 61% of people who took the poll support a cease-fire only after conditions are met 39% support an unconditional cease-fire. stay with us here on kron 4 on air on and online for the latest information on israel and its war with hamas from the campus protest. also the latest on the hostages. you can get all those updates on our website. kron 4 dot com. we're talking about our forecast now. it's a beautiful day in the bay weather-wise. our meteorologist kyla grogan is here now with details. it's still a kind of windy out there, but we're warming up little breezy out there. but this is the difference in temperatures from 24 hours ago to now. so you can see where anywhere from about 2 to 7, even 9 degrees warmer in mountain view. so that is to say >> that the warm-up is right on cue. but also on cue as the afternoon breeze that is kicking we have kind of couple places that are getting a little breezy right now. but let's start with temperatures

and you can see where santa rosa has already jumped up to 78 degrees, followed very closely behind by livermore 77 san francisco at 61. and you can see happening bay about 57 degrees. so obviously we are warming up. as i mentioned, the breeze is picking up. you see a bit of an onshore flow here in san francisco are up to 21 miles per hour. but notice over in fairfield. we've got more of a northerly flow and they are actually under a wind advisory through 5 o'clock today for some of that offshore wind. but also we've got just the blue skies in the high pressure kind of protecting us. that's allowing us to warm up right now. so this is going to be story for the next couple of days before we see a very big pattern change in our weather before tonight. another evening of those lovely, clear skies and some of those breezy conditions. temperatures relatively mild. there you can see about 46 to 52 degrees and then after today we have another day of this. then friday, then friday night, that's when things are going to change. we're going to start to see some of the clouds are going to move in and that will be the big pattern change because not only will we go from, you

>> the city of oakland is facing some new criticism after an audit revealed widespread lapses were to blame for the failure to secure a grant to fight crime. >> the city auditor's has just released this extensive 37 page report detailing how and why the city missed out on millions of dollars. of theresa stasi has been digging into this report. she joins us now live from the newsroom with some of the findings. and it was not so kind to the mayor. >> now, it was not high. the report lays out a very critical examination of what went wrong. it also points to the mayor saying a lack of leadership contributed to the city, botching the process to get these critical funds to fight crime. >> found that there was problems with interdepartmental intricate part, mental communication

project and minute that lack of 5. >> the leaders on wednesday city auditor michael houston explaining his department's findings and analyzing why missed out on applying for the state's organized retail theft prevention grant program or rtp the state budget act of 2022. allocated 242 million dollars to support local law enforcement agencies such as opd to help prevent and respond to organized retail theft motor vehicle theft and cargo theft. the audit showed 38 separate oakland city officials were emailed alerting them of grant monies ranging from 6 million to 15 million dollars at stake months before the deadline. however, auditor houston said that his team discovered a process that was at times chaotic and in the end never

successfully submitted the required documents. no one. >> took charts. i think that's actually the lake which we even used an audit take charge to make sure key deliverables are even identify with the key deliverables work right. and then like obviously set times lines for those and assign specific people to those. >> auditor, houston says bottom line, the city should make grants a higher priority moving forward. he says they have put forth these recommendations develop and implement a citywide grant management policy provides prescriptive guidance, right including that delineation of roles. >> and that reflects best practices so that no matter who's around, who's acting interim capacity or who might just be brand new in the city that there's some real strong guidance for them to follow so

that we have a consistent. and hopefully successful grant application process. >> kron 4 reached out to the mayor's office for comment as well as opd. the city council president who is also identified as playing a major role in the failure to secure funds but have not received in response to the auditors report coming up on kron, 4 news at 3 o'clock. i talked with a former city administrator who help secure millions for the city about his take on why there was such an epic failure, citywide back to just 8. >> theresa, we'll see you at 3. thank you. today is may day the first day of the month when workers rights are celebrated and demonstrations all around the globe. joining us now to discuss the significance of this day as cal state east bay professor, amir barbara, thanks so much for joining us here. professor, thank you so much for having me. it's a pleasure. so how did may first become known as international day for workers? >> well, a day in america originated from the 8 hour

workday movement in 19 th-century chicago. what became known as the haymarket affair in 18. 86 actually there was a peaceful protest in support of workers rights to move from a 16 hour work day to an 8 hour workday. that was the largest demand of the day. and during that time a bomb was that through the peaceful protest into chaos and violence and led to several deaths civilians and police officers. and that became a symbol for the labor movement struggle for fair treatment and sparked the establishment of international workers celebrated on may first globally, though we don't formally recognize it as a federal holiday here in the united states. that's where it began. >> and we do recognize labor day, though, as a federal holiday for workers rights. how come a day doesn't get that same love. >> well, here in the u.s. we celebrate labor day in september and distinct from the rest of the on these may

day celebrations. and that's largely due to the historical and political reasons. >> of the time in that day and in particular, in the 60's, there a little cool concerns. lie leaders at the time made labor day's association with socialist and communist movements. >> and that had ideological implications for united states during the cold war era. and so the united states government establish labor day in september. and both the u.s. and canada, we celebrate labor in september for that reason. historically. >> and so how is this day? how it's celebrated are honored to recognize changed 18. 86 until now. >> you know, i think that made historic ul ties to workers, rights and solidarity more and more in today's day and age intersected with some of their protest war and impacts that we're seeing even today across the city across oakland and san francisco today we're

seeing protests that are aligned with a pro-palestinian movement. for example. and we saw that back in the sixties as well opposing the vietnam war, for example, advocating for peace on a global scale. and lot of that is organizers and collaborators of the between labor unions and peace organizations recognize the impact of international happenings and even the impact of war on workers rights and livelihood. so it's really become a advocacy, social justice and solidarity for a common experience that all of us as laborers as workers have across the bow. so traditional may day gatherings. >> they're sometimes they made a pole dance where there's like the ribbons and people walk around. how did that a part of this? >> in the a day goes back european holidays, marking the first day of spring. and so that's part of how we came to some of the celebrations with

firefighters are continuing the next phase of a 3 million dollar project to stop wildfires. >> and as kron 4 to call reports as the temperatures rise. so to some other risks. >> and crew, 12 sets fire to vegetation piled up along the 13 mile shaded fuel break in ross. more pretty small piles by 6 hunter costa county fire protection district assistant chief chris popkin says the prescribed burn is eliminating piles. the hand crew could not reach with a chipper. the 3 million dollar project funded by cal fire is intended to save lives and property within 190 acre area gives us anchor point placed to try and

certainly some warmth out there and some blue skies as we take a live look here at half moon bay, you can see some people out kind of enjoying this weather. there are a little cooler at half moon bay. having said that, we are going to warm up a little bit there as well as we get into thursday and friday, but not quite as much as we're going to see in our inland spots in spots around the bay. it won't be until saturday that that really takes a turn. let me show you in the kind of bigger picture here, how this works out as we get into tomorrow. we stay really nice thursday into friday. then friday night, we start to see some cloud cover rolling in here to front tracking through and that front not only bring some rain to the bay area, but also a little snow to the sierra. and that's kind of wild at this time of year. but you can see there by saturday night looks like it's going to be pretty involved. looks like the snow levels will start up at about 7,000 feet in the lower on sunday to about 4,000 feet. so something to keep an eye on. if you're headed in that direction of tahoe this weekend, make sure you are checking the weather reports. i'll be back in a bit with your seven-day forecast. kyla. thank you. there are some major developments in the

effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price. >> in a unanimous vote, alameda county supervisors have accepted the registrar of voters certification that enough legal petition signatures were gathered to force a recall election. the board will now meet on may 14th to set a date for the recall. a special election can be set around 100 days in the future and the recall can take place during me november 5th general election, which could save the county some money. this vote coming after 3 hours of public comment. >> this is a frivolous, fraudulent and road or only u.s. election campaign to recall da price. alameda county is at a re us but da price been in office. i have no trust in pamela price. >> ask me i am a victim's family. the problem is not pamela price. the problem is the people who are getting locked the people who are using drugs. and are out the streets and they're creating

all kinds of crime. >> if the recall is successful in prices, voted out of office will be up to the board of supervisors to appoint someone to take over the appointed da will serve until the next general election in november of 2026. price believes the recall was illegal because the county did not follow the process that is set forth in the charter. and a very bizarre theft in oakland after bee keeper says someone stole her colony of 15,000 bees and its queen. susan downey us lift an open for nearly 3 decades. she was hosting a honey tasting event in her rockridge neighborhood on saturday morning. she set up a table with the beehive on it and then went back inside of her home to go get the honey. and that's when she says someone came and stole the bees. >> donahue says that the u.s. not only stole from her, but also an experience from kids. >> and then the kids come looking for that observation hive or to see the bees and

then having explained to them. that they got stolen. and that somebody would steal. these is really. disheartening to me. just getting tired the cycle. we're not coming out of hand feeling really and represented policymakers. >> donahue is part of the alameda county beekeepers association. she filed a police report online, but so far has not heard anything back. california has the highest rates of car thefts in the nation. that's according to a study from the insurance information institute. the san francisco oakland, berkeley area ranked 8th for metro areas with the highest rates of car theft nationwide. the report states that san francisco, oakland and berkeley, that area experienced nearly 700 thefts for every 100,000 residents last year. bakersfield was the only other california metro area to make the top 10 list.

the national highway traffic safety administration says a car is stolen. every 32 seconds in the u.s.. a brothel was busted in san jose following a monthsplong investigation. police say that they arrested a man for pimping and they say they found 2 women at that home. that they believe were victims of human trafficking kron four's jack moment has the details. 2 weeks ago. this house right here that's moving out was the site of a police raid where officers say they busted a commercial brothel. >> police say they've been looking at this home of 16th and saint james since november. tuesday evening, a moving truck. the men here speak mandarin and tell me they were hired to move belongings out of here. they say they don't know anything about what happened here earlier in april week or 2 ago or use in its recently moved into the neighborhood and says a bunch of police officers showed up 11:00am several days ago busting what they say is a commercial brothel. >> disturbing details to shun who is a san jose state

student. >> for sure, show. i mean, like any crime is a concern to me. but especially since i live like right across the street, police also arrested shoe chain the 53 year-old man now charged with pimping and pandering. they found 2 women living in the home who they say are possible human trafficking victims along with a bunch of cash and has been going off. hello, neighbor's within. close by say this has been going on for months. bound to have eye. it's been going off to fight for july last year. anthony garcia has lived next door here all his life and says he's seen men come and go out of this house since last summer. just wants a life safety for my sister, my niece stuff. and while the investigation is ongoing, garcia says now he has some peace of mind until now that they're out here loved like a sign relief. in san jose. jack moment. kron 4 news. >> u.s. secretary of state antony blinken is in israel today. he met with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in jerusalem.

secretary blinken is pushing for a ceasefire in gaza after nearly 7 months of the war between israel and hamas. he says it's time for an agreement between both sides that would free hostages being held by hamas. he says that any deal that the u.s. is going to support between israel and hamas must include food, medicine and water into gaza. the meantime, united airlines says its daily flights from newark, new jersey to tel aviv will remain canceled until may 9th. this is coming after the airline completed a, quote, safety assessment due to the ongoing violence in the middle east. and antiwar protests on college campuses continue to escalate with some clashes turning violent and then congress. the house is planning to vote no on the bill. some lawmakers say will curb anti-semitism and get these protests under control. our washington correspondent maddie beer-temple has the latest from dc. >> the house is expected to vote on this bill soon. it adds a definition of anti-semitism to federal

iscrimination law. and while these clashes playout on campus, they're also happening in congress. >> this was the scene at ucla tuesday night. fireworks went off and ambulances were at the ready as protesters clash over the war in gaza in congress. some lawmakers say it's out of control. this has got to stop. republicans want to crack down on what they say is blatant anti-semitism. texas senator john cornyn says this conduct goes beyond free speech. the line between protesting in writing, he's been crossed. some democrats, though, praised the pro-palestine protesters. sometimes it's with our young people. michigan congresswoman, rashida tlaib said they should be protected students. constitutional rights doesn't end when they enter your campus grounds. the white house defended the right to peacefully protest forcibly taking over. >> a building is not peaceful. it's just not as division is play out in the secretary of state. antony blinken is in israel meeting with leaders.

practical solutions, usc's main commencement ceremony remains canceled. however, 47 smaller commencement ceremonies will take place across the campus later on this month. in honor of the upcoming missing and murdered or in a missing or murdered indigenous peoples day on may 5th today, tribal leaders and community members from across california took to the state capitol to honor that occasion. those on hand called the legislature to take action in response to what they call a crisis fake facing indigenous communities. according to the u.s. department, roughly 4200 nationwide cases of murdered and missing indigenous people remain unsolved and more than 80% of indigenous men and women say they have experienced violence in their lifetime. we grew up. >> with the missing and murdered indigenous people around us. this is generations and generations now, actually, what's going on is that

so it's it's definitely going to be a sprint to get to june 4th, but we're going to get done in time. so we're getting to see now what is, quote, you're full and final vision for your new home are showing some of those images to walk us through a little bit about. >> what this park is going to look like, what fans can expect. sure. so, you know, our by is essentially 48 block around the baseball game and that's what it's going to feel like and also our design principle is essentially to embrace the space. i think that's what we've done. you know, we've turned a public park into a ballpark really quickly with the help of the community. >> that's built by oakland. and that i think is what it's going to feel like when you're in the park. you know, we've got some murals that we're putting in place that are going to be done by local artists. there's going to be local food trucks and their own internal concessions to buy lots of lots of different, great ballpark food it's going to be it's going to be a good time. i think that's really what we're going for. we want to feel like a big love letter to a planned and a place for
