>> from the game early news station, you're watching morning team. >> good morning. thank you for joining us here at 10 o'clock. i'm james fletcher on this tuesday on this wednesday a first, by the way, first day of the month of may and looks like we've got all kinds of weather to talk about. good morning, john. yeah, it is a lot variety yet again for the new biden for the april brought a showers brought us nice and sunny days today is going to be one of those sunny days. but by saturday, we're back to the showers looking outside at the golden gate bridge. skies are beautiful and crystal clear up above. we don't have any fog at the coastline. we still do have some breezy conditions in a few spots, especially for solano county. still do have a wind advisory up there and into the central valley. temps are warming pretty quickly, brett, what you're getting close to 70 degrees. same up in vacaville. most of the rest of us still hanging out in the 60's later on today. it's going to be 70's to even a few low 80's making today. a

little warmer than yesterday was. i'll tell you all about that next chance of rainfall we've got still ahead, james. okay. looking forward to that. john, thank you. made while the big story this morning for north bay commuters, especially but for tourists in general, the fact that that golden gate ferry service between san francisco and sausalito, he's back up and running. it had been not running for a couple weeks now to fix some damage to the pier. but crawford's michael thomas is there live in sausalito with the good news for all those folks who want to take the ferry. michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right. it's not only been causing really havoc for those commuters, but also even business owners. tell me that they've seen a decline partially over the last 2 weeks. so they were excited about it. but take a look. we've got video from this morning. you can see that pier back on the 19th of april. essentially the golden gate ferry service closed between san francisco and sausalito was suspended because there was damage that was found during a routine checkup on the piers pylons.

now, officials close it out of an abundance of caution. but since then, contractors have fixed. the issue of the pier is ready for business. the ferry got here this morning at 705. and you can see in that video, people were already lined up and lots of commuters say it's cheaper instead of driving with the tolls and gas. but also to they say it's a community. take a listen. what they had to say. it's really peaceful, really clean. and it's just a great group of people on i just drove but it's not as nice a very. >> and you look at cost more to drive in. cash. probably does cost a little bit more. yeah. >> now we should be back out here live. you can see this is the view that they're talking about. they get to right on that water. every single morning. so all is well here in south toledo and that service of the ferry is back up and running as normal. the next ferry leaves here at 10. 55 arriving in san francisco

at 11. 25 james, i will send it back to you live in the studio. >> i think what court for entire this encampment and other cameras around the country across the world, that not about the university not about it is going get with the law. >> and so this is the other big story we're following this morning. pro-palestine demonstrations continuing at several colleges around the country, including here in the bay area. in fact, these are the tents that are now on the quad at san francisco state university the protesters say they're pushing the university and u.s. officials to disclose any expenditures the college may have with foreign investors. meanwhile, uc berkeley, more and more tents are being set up there as well as the encampment there. sproul plaza grows. now they are in their second week of this demonstration today. in fact, faculty and staff say they're planning to join the protest. that will be at noon. the protesters say they're calling on the university to

stop investing in companies that work with israel, especially if they're involved in making weapons of war. on the peninsula. at stanford university students there say they are concerned about disciplinary action coming from the school. students told us the school has sent them disciplinary letters for participating in these protests. >> it start off with 19 for out at like 2 or 3 more. can't exactly. remember who have letters from the office of community standards and are basically being put through their internal disciplinary process. the language is very lpvague. >> well, the protesters say they want a better understanding of exactly how they might be punished. we did reach out to stanford about what the ramifications might be. but so far haven't heard back. meanwhile, in the south bay today, students at santa clara university will be joining in on these protests as well. and they want to administrator ys to pressure the government to end military funding in israel. organizers of today's solitary demonstration. all are going to be meeting on campus at the

alameda lawn from 12 until 08:00pm. well, as campus protests escalate in other parts of the country, congress is threatening consequences. house republicans now, fact, are launching an investigation into federal funding for these universities. and they're pushing to pass new anti-semitism laws. washington correspondent hannah brandt has more on that part of the story. >> house leaders accuse university officials of failing to keep these protests under control. also saying they're not doing enough to protect jewish students. fireworks erupted at ucla and protesters clashed on campus across the country of colombia. new york police stormed university building to arrest dozens of protesters who have been occupying it. this thing is out of control from capitol hill. lawmakers are watching with concern and house speaker mike johnson warns of universities don't get the chaos under control. you will see congress respond unkind. you're going to see funding begin to dry up. you're going to every level of

accountability that we can muster. he says several house committees will investigate the protest and may decide to take away federal funding. and this week, congress is gearing up to vote on a bill to change the federal definition of anti-semitism under anti-discrimination law. the rampant anti-semitism. >> requires action by the federal government. congressman mike lawlor introduced the legislation and supporters say it would allow universities to crack down on harmful speech. this is not the free marketplace of ideas. >> this is open threats to jewish students because of their faith and who they are. but some worry it goes too far like congresswoman teresa ledger, fernandez, we're constitutionally bound to protect free speech. >> even more importantly, when it is speech with rich. we do not agree. and congressman pete aguilar prefers letting universities respond. they have guidance. they have they need to enforce those before congress. kate snow once. >> the white house as well. president biden does support

peaceful protests. he is concerned about antisemitism on campuses and he doesn't agree with protesters barricading themselves inside university buildings in washington. i'm hannah brandt. >> thank you, also in the news today, 450 homeless families in san francisco will soon receive financial help. they've all been chosen as part of a five-year pilot program funded by google and local nonprofits. half in this group will receive $1000 a month. the other half will receive about $50 a month. it's all part of the study aims to show that guaranteed basic income can work to combat poverty and homelessness. the payments will be distributed exclusively to families who are about to lose access to city funded housing subsidies. the program is actually part of a larger 1 billion dollar effort by google to increase the bay area's housing supply. in the east bay. the alameda county board of supervisors has voted to certify the results of the recall petition for district attorney pamela price. and this comes as the

state has launch d an investigation now into one of the groups behind the recall effort. price said in december her campaign team filed a complaint against that group claiming it didn't comply with certain laws that govern all political committees in the state. but this recall investigation could take several years to complete. and in the end, the penalties might range from a simple warning to fines. but of course, all of that would be moot if voters decide to recall price. in the meantime. well, now that recall signatures are certified. the board of supervisors has to set a date for the recall and kron four's. dan kerman walks us through the timeline of how that would work. >> this is a frivolous, fraudulent and road or only u.s. election campaign to recall da price. alameda county is at a re us but da price been in office. i have no trust in pamela price. >> ask me i am a victim's family. the problem is not pamela price. the problem is the people who are getting

locked the people who are using drugs. and are out the streets and they're creating all kinds of crime. now that the board is move forward to certify the results, they will hold another meeting on may 14th to set a recall election. >> the special election can be set 88 to 125 days in the future. alternatively, the recall can also take place during the november 5th general election, which would save the county a boatload of money. if the recall is successful in prices voted out of office, it will be up to the board of supervisors to appoint someone to take over the appointed da will serve 2 years until the next general election in november of 2026, whoever wins that election, we'll finish out prices term which runs until january of 2029. supervisors. no, the da pamela price believes the recall is illegal because the process did not follow the county's charter. in fact, one

and yeah, it's not looking so bad at all. we got the bay bridge down there. no fog not even talking a lot of haze courtesy of all that wind that has been pushing through the bay area. still got some of it present near the coastline around point raise 21 miles per hour. gusts. >> and we are seeing still a gale wind warning from point raise up the sonoma coast line through tomorrow morning. further inland, we actually do have a wind advisory in solano county as well as the central valley, 30, 40 miles per hour. gusts out that direction through 05:00pm today. much of the rest of us, especially the bayshore are not too terribly windy. and that just makes today altogether, the more enjoyable with a nice warm day ahead of us. just a strong northwesterly flow, that same northwesterly flow is going to usher in some big changes this weekend, which is going to be a big cool down and some rainfall on saturday. lot of our rain events this year been during the weekend. this weekend is no different. the bay area as well as the sierra going to see some wintry feeling precipitation. cool showers for the day and snow up in the sierra our bay area

forecast offering up anywhere between a 3rd to 3 quarters of an inch of rainfall. multiple inches of rain up and down the northern coast of the state and then we are talking snow up in the sierra the chance of over a foot of it on some of our mountain passes. do expect chain controls in effect on saturday. your travel days up there will be friday, especially early on. and then again on sunday. as for today, it's nothing wintry about it. a few 60's at the coastline. most of the rest of us will be in the 70's, including downtown san francisco. we'll be looking at even a couple of low 80's on the map today. this all together does make today just a little warmer than yesterday and with winds altogether being a little calmer for a lot of spots. it's not at all of that data be venturing out hayward enrichment at 74 degrees for your highs, concord, pittsburgh and vacaville are fairfield are actually going rise to 80 degrees today. vacaville getting close. santa rosa also close at 78 looking ahead tomorrow and friday. very similar. that cool down arrives saturday along with

those showers. james. >> thank you, john. 10, 18 is the time. and in the east bay and oakland bee keeper is frustrated after someone stole a colony of bees along with its queen. susan donoghue has lived in oakland for nearly 3 decades and she was hosting a honey tasting event in iraq ridge neighborhood saturday morning. she set up a table out front of her home. she had to be observation. hive on it. and when she went back into her home to grab the honey to bring out, she says that's when someone pulled up stole the bees. donahue says thieves not only stole from her, but they also stole a valuable experience for the kids who are coming by to learn more about him. >> and saying the kids come looking for that observation hive or to see the bees and then having explained to them. that they got stolen. and that somebody would steal. bees is really. disheartening to me. just getting tired cycle. we're not coming out of hand feeling really. and

representative policymakers. >> and donahue is a part of the alameda county beekeepers association. she says commercial bee colony theft happens in rural areas, but not here locally. donna, who filed a police report online but says she hasn't heard anything back yet. in the south bay. san jose lawmaker. wants to put an end to trafficking in the city council member bn don't wants to put phone numbers on posters inside a bathroom stalls and on bathroom mirrors in public restrooms. so the victims can call for help. if someone or someone can report suspected trafficking, similar signs can already be found at the san jose airport. and according to the south bay coalition to end human trafficking, trafficking represent 77% of human trafficking and more than 60% of trafficking victims in the nation. our girls, women or females identifying as youths of color. for your money this morning if you filed or filled

up your car lately, you've likely noticed it's not cheap at the gas station over the last month. in fact, average prices statewide have gone up by $0.44. state investigators say that oil companies are raking in profits while we feel the pain. 8 on wallace takes a look. >> there's urgent need to protect california consumers from price down. that's the message from time. milder director of the state's brand new oil watchdog agency known as the division of petroleum market oversight. since it's creation last summer, the division has been collecting data from the oil industry and working with the california energy commission to determine whether or not to annex some sort of penalty on oil companies if they are found to be taking part in price gouging. we are working to provide active oversight and to make sure that the market it's setting the prices that these are fair prices. milder says while it's too early in

the data collection process to conclude whether price gouging is taking place, he says he does have some early concerns. californians have been paying too much at the pump for too long between late march in late april, gas prices on average, increased by $0.44 in the state. but he says that the same time the price of crude oil in the market increased by just $0.3 while the industry margin, which is how much is made per gallon went up by $0.41 his conclusion. the recent price spikes really profits. thanks for industry. looking at the data, we're seeing some clear fronts. >> when prices at the pump went up over last month, it was because the oil industry profits but those in the oil industry say it's not as the scenes. the date is there. price gouging is not happening. 7 slagle is with the western states petroleum association representing oil industry stakeholders over the past month. >> there's a number of refineries that were off line maintenance. and when you refineries down supplies

shrink you know, any commodity when you have less supply the needed, the costs, you know, typically will go up. and that's probably a lot. what we saw his position is that the state should invest in more oil production to drive down costs. the city, california has been the last couple years implementing policy after policy that's meant in production in but in the end, what consumers care about, they care about higher costs and that is the path our state has its own and to the state conclude price gouging is taking place. the california energy commission would still need to determine what if any penalty. >> would be imposed reporting at the state capitol. eytan wallace kron. 4 news. thank you. wait on. it is 10, 23. and coming up on the kron 4 morning news. shocking video shows protesters violently clashing over night. >> at ucla will have the

10. 25 is the time. campbell business owner has pleaded guilty now to more than 1 million dollars in tax evasion. >> prosecutors say that excel behavioral services owner shane mike failed to pay taxes withheld from his employees. his business specializes in providing home care for people with disabilities. and as the boss, mike was responsible for withholding social security, medicare and income taxes from his staff's wages. investigators found it might never paid more than a million dollars in taxes to the irs and instead use that money to pay his personal expenses. mike is to be sentenced in september and faces up to 5 years in federal prison. for your health this morning, there's a recall of organic walnuts tied to an e-coli outbreak. those notes were sold in natural food co-op stores by hollister based

gibson farms incorporated. now the affected knots have an expiration date between may 20st and june, 7th of 2025. e-coli bacteria, as you may know, causes everything from severe stomach cramps to diarrhea and vomiting. symptoms start 3 to 4 days after consuming that contaminated food. the fda says multiple bay area stores have received these knots from stores in berkeley to santa rosa, san francisco. there's quite a list. fact, the fda has put a list together of the stores that may have received these walnuts on their website. so check that out. we're going to take a break. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news. the campaign to build a new california city. he's moving forward. we'll tell you what hap

>> we are back 10. 29 the time. let's start the half hour with a check of the weather as we're looking at the sunny skies here on this may 1st. >> welcome to the month of may, john. good morning. he made with such ease and we're looking at lots of sunshine out there across the bay area for your first day of the new month. >> that's not going to last, though, by this weekend. we are cooling things down really quickly. looking outside at downtown san francisco, a little bit of a breeze. it's definitely windier out towards the coastline and up in the county where we actually do have a wind advisory, vacaville and fairfield, some of our windiest of spots right now, temperatures are rising quickly under all that sunshine. san matteo at 67 currently fairfield in brentwood getting close to that 70 degree mark. now later on today, daytime highs will reach the 70's to even low 80's in a few spots. james.

10, 30 is the time crop or your local election headquarters and the recount in that highly contentious race for silicon valley, 16th congressional district is effectively. >> half over meeting in santa clara county has finished its part of the recount. san mateo county. now they say they have finished their recount, but the results won't be announced until later today. kron four's catherine heenan has a look. >> santa clara county voting officials say their recount shows evan low picked up 11 additional votes. joe, some indian gained 7 so low lead summit, ian, by 4 votes in santa clara county. but that does not answer the question of whether low one san mateo county still has more than a dozen challenge to ballots and official there told me they have finished counting them but won't announce the results until wednesday after campaign attorneys and others get a chance to review the numbers. meantime, sam liccardo published an opinion piece in

which he again rejects claims that he's behind the recount because a former staffer named jonathan padilla requested it. he says the fact that padilla is a supporter of mine is not remarkable. every independent expenditure committee in history has been created by a candidate supporter. i think cargo is doing the smart thing, which is. >> he's trying to get ahead of whatever the results are because someone is going to win. that was going to lose and going to lose made all probability trained, blame liccardo the fact and of the 3 person race. it's a 2 person michael yaki also agrees with lockhart was called for. >> automatic recounts in a close election which may have lessened the political drama. >> because you want to kind of get the politics out of this and just getting into the the issue of voter integrity and every vote counts. i would hope that the california legislature after this would mandate as a as a requirement in the california electoral process that automatic

recounts be available in united states house of representative races in the case of a tie as or as it was catherine hannah. >> kron. 4 news. 10. 32 is the time janitors in the bay area who work at california's largest office buildings and tech campuses are rallying today as their union contracts expired yesterday, thousands of janitors taken to the streets now in support of their union committee, which is at the moment negotiating what they say are excessive workloads in an industry that they claim abuse and exploit janitors based on their status. according to the department of industrial relations, one-third of janitors in california were injured on the job last year. if no resolution is reached, janitors say they may very well strike as early as may 7th. that's next tuesday. just are some sort of explosive or firework okay. just a firework

>> hey, guys, we've got to go. we've got to go. we've got to go. we've got to go that's the other big story we're following this morning. this at a los angeles where classes have been canceled and there's a heavy police presence this morning at ucla where violent clashes broke out overnight between dueling groups of protesters hours after the university declared a pro-palestinian encampment on leffel protesters attempted to take down metal barricades just before midnight. fireworks were set off as you saw and people could be seen throwing objects at each other. some were injured. some sprayed with bear spray during the fighting. ucla calls the protests and unlawful encampment. and here see how that's playing out. meanwhile, today, students from across the oakland unified school district plan, a walkout in solidarity with the protests happening. university campuses all for a free palestine, oakland tech high school will be one of those schools from around the district will participate. their walkout is

scheduled at noon today. they're going to have students and teachers speak about the events unfolding in gaza. in the south bay. a brothel was busted by police following a months long investigation where officers arrested a man for pimping and found 2 women inside of that home who they believe might be victims of human trafficking. from first jack moment has the story. 2 weeks ago. this house right here that's moving out was the site of a police raid where officers say they busted a commercial brothel. >> police say they've been looking at this home of 16th mnd saint james since november. tuesday evening, a moving dropped. the men here speak mandarin and tell me they were hired to move belongings out of here. they say they don't know anything about what happened here earlier in a broad week or 2 ago or use in its recently moved into the neighborhood and says a bunch of police officers showed up 11:00am several days ago busting what they say is a commercial brothel. >> disturbing details to shun who is a san jose state student.

>> for sure show. i mean, like any crime is a concern to but especially since i live like right across the street, police also arrested shoe chain the 53 year-old man now charged with pimping and pandering. they found 2 women living in the home who they say are possible human trafficking victims along with a bunch of cash and has been going off. hello, neighbor's of includes by say this has been going on for months. bound to have eye. it's been going off to fight 4th of july last year. anthony garcia has lived next door here all his life and says he's seen men come and go out of this house since last summer. just wants a life safety for my sister and my niece stuff. while the investigation is ongoing, garcia says now. >> he has some peace of mind until now that they're out here. i'm like a sign relief. in san jose. jack moment. kron 4 news. >> 10 36 is the time. and meantime, 50 former google employees now filing an official complaint against the company for unlawful

termination. it was 2 weeks ago that those employees were holding sit-in protests google offices in sunnyvale and new york. our cameras were at sunnyvale. we capture these images. the company, though, has fired them. they did that last week after finding out what their identities were the workers have since now filed a complaint saying google unlawfully retaliated against them. the protesters say they want their jobs back and they want google to allow workers to protest without retaliation. the dea has propose reclassifying cannabis from a schedule one drug to a schedule three-drug cannabis industry celebrated that huge news after the big announcement. the national cannabis association ceo said for years marijuana had been viewed federally is having no medicinal value whatsoever and higher potential for abuse. but this recent change in classification could be a huge game changer for companies and it could remove a problematic tax code. >> the marijuana businesses are unable to deduct things like to rent their payroll

marketing expenses, their compliance costs, the cost of the security cameras in their in their facilities. >> dispensary owners say that if the change does get approved, they'll be able to attract more investors freeing up capital and moving to a schedule. three-drug would put marijuana in the same class as tylenol. the proposal, though, still has to be reviewed by the white house. but the national cannabis association ceo predicts that the change could come before the november election. we'll see what happens. well, after years of delays, 16 17 year-olds in oakland and berkeley will finally get a chance to vote in school board elections. the alameda county board of supervisors voted tuesday to approve $113,000 in contract increases with the 3rd party election services company. and this would allow them to add 6 positions in the registrar of voters. office would also allow the county's elections officials to add the necessary software upgrades and you're around support for youth voting. so we'll see that. come on come online. well,

california forever. that group working to build a new utopian city in solano county has reached another milestone. they submitted enough signatures to qualify for the november ballot and kron four's tiffany justice has a look. >> the group says they have 7,000 more signatures than needed and they're confident all 20,000 signatures collected. we'll be verified. >> so i don't voters have made that first decision. and they have made loud and clear. over 20,000 to lionel residence have signed the petition. >> the campaign to build a new california city is moving for jan sramek. ceo of california forever says they are gaining the support of locals submitting more than 20,000 signatures tuesday to qualify the east. a homes, jobs in clean energy initiative for the november ballot. 7,000 signatures. more. >> than was required. for the 2000 signatures are required.

in as we work our way into saturday. so from the warm and calm 2, almost like clockwork. the weekend gets cool. cloudy and wet again was showers for the bay area expected friday night into saturday and snow up in the sierra mostly on saturday as well. we'll quickly drive back out into sunday after that. rainfall estimates anywhere between a 3rd to 3 quarters of an inch for the bay. several inches of rain for the north coast in for the sierra. we're going to be looking at or even upwards of a foot of snowfall at the very height of the sierra. and that could result in some chain controls specially on saturday. in the meantime, today, though, a beautiful day to venture outside. a lot of 60's to 70's in today's forecast into these daytime highs a little bit warmer than yesterday's noticeable in the south bay's you approach 80 degrees, mostly mid 70's for the east bay and a couple of spots like concord, pittsburgh and fairfield actually reaching 80 degrees today. so definitely getting warm, but not necessarily staying that
