area. meanwhile, the sausalito ferry back in service today after damaged the pier has been fixed. we're live at the terminal. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at no. >> good morning and thanks waking up with us on wednesday. i'm darya and i'm james and what a wednesday it is the first day of may. we've got another bomb who skies and sunshine and then in the first week of may may be snow and rain. you'd never know it. looking outside today through friday. >> with gorgeous conditions out there, it's beautiful start to the new month until saturday gets here. and then the rain that the mountain snowfall and just generally a big cool down in temperatures. we're sitting this morning from mount tam. it is nothing but the sun. and you also notice not too hazy out there. we can. i think the wind for that yesterday was a blustery day at the coastline. still a little breezy towards the coast, although it's really
9:01 am
vacaville and fairfield, which have been the windiest this morning with the wind advisory up in solano county. temperatures are currently starting to rise back in the low 60's san jose hayward, san mateo in concord, each right at 60 degrees or just above it. now, vacaville up to 65 in later today. we are going to be looking at some 70's and even a few low 80's under all that sunshine. now, i will be breaking down this weekend's opportunity of rain and mountain snow. still to come in your full forecast, back to all right. thanks a lot. let's take a look at the traffic. >> and right now, wow, it's just everybody's cleared out of the bay bridge. so all you see is a sunshine and no traffic, which is quite nice. a 15 minute breezy right into san francisco over the san mateo bridge. it's been so sluggish earlier this morning is getting much better. 26 minutes now for westbound 92 on the right hand side. so still a little bit slow, much better than it was in the last hour, the richmond, sandra fell bridge is really just 11 minutes now. a little - bit of a lineup here to get through the toll plaza and
9:02 am
then through where it is better as well because from novato down to the golden gate bridge had been doubled to drive. time now is just 30 minutes. it was above 40 minutes before. so that's an easy ride. 2, by the time you get to the golden gate bridge, the only thing that hurt us up and that looking in that shot to see if i could see a ferry from sausalito making its way to san francisco can see the shot. but >> they are running again this morning. that's the good news. the golden gate ferry service between the city of sausalito is a backup in operational after what? 2 weeks of the ye. because there was damage to the peer they had to fix tha . crawford's michael thomas. >> has been live all morning long watching riders hapa board. good morning. >> hey, good morning, everyone. you know, daria, that's one of the common things that i've heard people say this morning. they didn't want to pay those tolls. they would rather pay to get on the ferry. and this varies been out for at least 2 weeks. but take a look. we've got video up on your screen, as you mentioned, that peer they were fixing the pylons on it. they're doing a routine inspection back on april 19th. that's when they found that
9:03 am
there was a small discrepancies. so out of an abundance of caution, they actually closed it down and they had contractors come in, fix that issue. and this morning the pair was finally ready and open for business. chatted with numerous people who were gathering here this morning, a few dozen at 7 and more at 8 o'clock. again, all who say really, they've been waiting for this moment because one they enjoy riding the ferry, but also they say it's a lot more cost-effective. take a listen. >> drive-in car, unfortunately. and how much of that cost him? you got a lot. >> very much. so. like community experience, i mean, every day. so when did you find out that it was going to back this morning? >> actually, just walking down here. >> and, you know, to add to what he was saying, he's not the only person. there was a few people who are here to actually get a bus ticket from one of the machines. and then they saw that the ferry was actually working again. so it's at that point that they got onto that ferry. but during this time that it was down, people are having to use
9:04 am
that golden gate bus to get over the golden gate bridge and take it in. one woman tells me it took about 2 hours and she says normally takes about 45 minutes to get across that water and back out here live, i'm sure you can see that beauty behind me, san francisco. so who would like to see that as they drive in? so the next very leaving is around 10. 45 this morning. but you'll hear more from some of the commuters who came at about 9 o'clock this morning. i'll send it back to and a huge deal for the businesses inside. so, you know, as well, tourists give a lot of money to sausalito. they'll be back. thank you. >> i think what court for entire world this encampment and other cameras around the country across the world, that not about the university not about it is lot. >> and there you hear some of the arguments that the demonstrators are protesting against the pro-palestinian demonstrators. here are several college campuses nationwide. tense now cover
9:05 am
the quad at san francisco state university. the protesters say they are pushing the university and u.s. officials to disclose what expenditures colleges have with foreign investors. yeah. and we have seen the protests growing as well over uc berkeley hears that cal campus and more tents are now set up around sproul plaza. >> this is now in its second week. and today, faculty and staff plan to join in the demonstration at noon. they are calling on the university to divest from israel. so any company that works with israel that rather than not have financial ties to? we're also monitoring what's going on at stamford because we have seen students camped out there as well. and we've also heard from students who say that they got letters from the university threatening disciplinary action for their protest. >> it start off with 19 for out at like 2 or 3 more. can't exactly. remember who have letters from the office of community standards and are basically being put through their internal disciplinary process. the language is very vague.
9:06 am
>> the more clarification we did contact the school asking how they might be punished for what you know, further the situation of these letters and stanford didn't give us any comment back yet. so we're waiting. >> well, in the south bay today, students at santa clara university will be joining in on these protests. they want administrators to pressure the government to end any military funding they may have to israel. organizers of today's solidarity demonstration are asking people to gather on campus at alameda lawn be there from noon until 08:00pm. and as we're seeing more and more demonstrations on campuses around the bay and across the country. >> congress is looking at what to do specifically federal funding for the universities. and then what about the jewish students in and he's anti semitism? yeah, they're pushing anti semitism laws to be passed. washington correspondent hannah brandt following that part of the story. >> house leaders accuse university officials of failing to keep the protests under control and they say not enough is being done to
9:07 am
protect jewish students. firewtrks erupted at ucla and protesters clashed on campus >> across the country of colombia, new york police stormed university building to arrest dozens of protesters who have been occupying it. this thing is out of control from capitol hill. lawmakers are watching with concern and house speaker mike johnson warns of universities don't get the chaos under control. you will see congress respond unkind. you're going to see funding begin to dry up. you're going to every level of accountability that we can muster. he says several house committees will investigate the protest and may decide to take away federal funding. and this week, congress is gearing up to vote on a bill to change the federal definition of anti-semitism under anti-discrimination law. the rampant anti-semitism. requires action by the federal government. congressman mike lawlor introduced the legislation and supporters say it would allow universities to crack down on harmful speech. this is not the free marketplace of ideas. >> this is open threats to
9:08 am
jewish students because of their faith and who they are. but some worry it goes too far like congresswoman teresa ledger, fernandez, we're constitutionally bound to protect. >> free speech, even more importantly, when it is speech with rich. we do not agree. and congressman pete aguilar prefers letting universities respond. they have guidance. they have they need to enforce those before congress. kate snow once the white house as well, president biden does support peaceful protests. he is concerned about antisemitism on campus and doesn't agree with protesters occupying university buildings. >> in washington, i'm hannah brandt. >> hanna, thank you. and we'll continue following that story an other news this morning. 450 homeless families in san francisco will soon receive financial help. they've been chosen as part of a five-year pilot program funded by google and local nonprofits. half of those in this program will receive $1000 a month. the other half will receive $50 a
