more about the family killed in that fiery crash in pleasanton. and dozens of firefighters working now to contain a massive fire at a commercial building in concord. we are live there with details. >> from the bay station. you're watching kron. and news. >> thanks for joining us here on kron for news at noon. i'm just and we're going to start with that massive fire that burned a commercial building in concord nearby. roads are closed is impacting the commute for drivers right now. kron 4 s charles clifford is live in concord with details on this fire and the aftermath. thanks for joining us. >> well, good afternoon. yeah, this was a very dramatic scene late last night. look across the street there. you can see crews are in the process of cleaning up that building right over there. 3 stories pretty much a total loss of garage on the ground floor. some retailers are also some apartment units on the top. there is completely destroyedm good news today. nobody

injured, but this is going to impact traffic in the area throughout the day. >> late monday evening, fire broke out in this vacant three-story building at the intersection of clayton road and park street in concord, which is just across the street from concord bart station. according to contra costa county fire. there were no active fire alarms or smoke detectors inside the building which allowed the flames to grow unchecked until a passerby noticed smoke and called 9-1-1. when there's system alarm in place. >> we only get the call a good citizen lets us know. >> when fire crews arrived on scene, they searched the building, recognize no one was inside with defensive because i was going to be a safer way to fight the fire. the fire eventually grew to a second alarm. the roof also collapsed, but crews were able to contain the blaze by about one tuesday morning. they were also able to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings in the nearby bart station was not impacted. crews are now keeping an eye on the building to make sure the fire doesn't kick back up

again. they're still going to be a few hot we're monitoring, but the fire is out at this stage or just do a mop up making sure those hot spots don't reignite the exact cause of this fire is still under investigation. all right, back live now contra costa county fire says that they're going to be here throughout the afternoon. there could be some road closures and delays. if you're in the area of the concord bart station. but for now in the east bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> charles, thank you. and crews right now are clearing up a car fire in the bay bridge. the chp says this car caught on fire earlier this morning. smoke could be seen rising from the sky from the bridge. officials say that a quote, fully engulfed vehicle fire was blocking several lanes on highway 80 westbound west of treasure island and 2 lanes have reopened. 2 others are remaining closed right now. drivers are being advised to expect some delays. this is a live look here at the toll plaza. i should try to figure out a different way to get

into the city. if you're trying to use the bay bridge, you can see the backup here at the toll plaza because the fire was heading into san francisco. currently, there's no estimate into would not all those lanes are going to reopen, but we could see what's going on here after that fire will keep you posted right here at noon. and staying in the east bay. police are investigating 2 separate shootings that injured 2 people. the first shooting happened sunday night just before 11 100th avenue near breed avenue. the second shooting happened just after 12, 30 monday morning on 73rd avenue near holly street. investigators say the victim in both of these shootings did go to nearby hospitals. but anyone with information about either should contact police. the fair political practices commission has opened an investigation into the efforts to recall district attorney pamela price. the fppc has notified price that they are investigating the reviving the bay area political action committee fund for that

family of 4 notes and flowers along with parts left behind at the family's car now dot the landscape. police say that the family was apparently returning from the birthday party when for some reason, the electric car swerved and collided with a tree catching fire. >> right down the street from and their family, you know, like all rest of this and they have them. you know, he's seen him with their kids playing and he writes, when i right my yeah, it's really and neighbor too upset to be on camera. talked with kron 4 news. >> go home this way. that was the next day. was pretty the names not being released to kron for news from the alameda county sheriff's department include. >> to run george 41 rowan george 13 and aaron george 9, the identity of the 4th victim, authorities say cannot be released yet. but sources tell kron for news that it was

notice at the moment. at least we're not too terribly breezy. we are going to see that change as we get into the afternoon. but right now we've got 50's in san francisco in half moon bay. again, this is just like yesterday and we're heading into the upper 60's in spots like concord, santa rosa, san jose are inland spots looking to get into the 70's today. i mentioned wind is not too bad right now. having said that, we are going to see it pick up as we go throughout the afternoon. much like we did yesterday. you can see those breezy conditions out at the coast. >> about 15 miles per hour right now in san francisco in 18 at half moon bay. but let's check out some of the buoys that are sitting just a little bit offshore. you can see where some of these wind gusts are getting way up there. and in fact, it's a very hazardous time to be voting today because of this. so they are going to dealing with gale force winds out. if you head out of the bay itself. so another breezy afternoon, those strongest gusts will be at the coast yet again today. and that is onshore wind. but by wednesday, we're actually going to see an offshore push for some of our inland spots. and in fact, those of you in solano and yolo counties, going to be under a wind advisory for that. talk about

that a little bit later in the show. but let's talk about the highs today. they're going to be lovely again, looking out for those mid to even potentially upper 70's and sun spot like antioch, about 77 about 62 in san francisco. so a nice day on tap. we do have that warm-up on the way and a slight chance of rain for the weekend. yes, we do. i'll have all that in your seven-day forecast. >> turning now to some national news as a house committee has passed a bill that would codify the definition of anti-semitism. it's a bipartisan measure, even as some in congress say it threatens free speech. our washington correspondent trevor shirley is in dc with more. >> this bill coming as pro-palestinian protests continue to spring up on college campuses all across the country, which some jewish students say threatens their safety. >> now more than ever, it is critical that the federal government's definition of anti-semitism is clear and uniform in a 74 vote monday, the house rules committee passing a bill codifying the

definition of anti-semitism. >> as defined by the international holocaust remembrance alliance, potentially adding that definition to title 6 of the 1964 civil rights act. congress must clearly define antisemitism. so universities are empowered to take appropriate and decisive steps to keep students safe. but with campus protests spreading some lawmakers arguing this bill may have unintended side effects. this bill threatens to chill constitutionally protected speech speech that is critical of israel alone does not constitute unlawful discrimination to get federal funds, colleges and universities must comply with title 6 lawmakers supportive of the bill say it gives schools clear language defining the line between free speech and language not protected by the constitution. the school siege to protect jewish americans. if they don't, don't deserve tax dollars. others arguing the bill would simply make the country's current divisions even worse. this bill

have arrested a man after he attacked 2 people, including piedmont's police chief called for us. tiffany justice reports the chief. >> is now questioning why the man have been released from jail before serving his full sentence for kidnapping. significantly injured in an unprovoked attack. older gentleman and he had just gotten injuring a couple, my officers. and so it was at that point time, it's doesn't matter what think. you are. you know, we're in this we know we set up officer. my position would do the same thing. >> on monday, piedmont police

chief jeremy bowers recounting attack on friday that had him face to face with a violent suspect around 4.20 in the afternoon. police were called to ace hardware on 12. 21 grand avenue after getting calls about an elderly man getting punched from behind. happened right inside of our front initially we thought it was a medical >> issue because there really wasn't anybody around. we had an elderly customer kind of walk through the door. >> appeared to kind of stop and clean as glasses. and a gentleman walked from outside right behind them. sucker punched him right into the back of his head and knocked him out for quite a few minutes. storm manager sean braga says the suspect 42 year-old willie gomer ran back outside. >> and to the building next door, which is their garden center. that's where piedmont police caught up to gomer. she bowers says the suspect immediately initiated a physical confrontation >> attempted to were relegated

obviously is always going to be higher because you're kind of out closer to the ocean. having said that, we are going to see this pick up again as we get into the afternoon. but meanwhile, we've got this gorgeous sunshine out there yet again today. beautiful right now in san francisco. it's all about the high pressure that's protecting us right now. you can see the jet that to the north of kind of shoots any weather to the north of us as well. you see some showers up there in parts of oregon and washington state. but we're looking good. and the marine layer has just been a whole lot of nothing is 12 morning, which is been really nice to see that sunshine so early temperatures right now, san jose about 67. so we are warming up in a spot like dublin, flirting with that 70 degree mark now sitting at 69 62 in berkeley that 60 in downtown san francisco and can see santa rosa about 67 fairfield's made it up to that 70 degree mark already. so what that means is a nice day ahead. but a little bit breezy if you're headed out sea. the oakland a's tonight throwing out that first pitch at 6.40 about 65 degrees. but look out for that breeze. about 10 to 15 miles from the west say no. if you sit up higher tenderly, catch that wind over there. if you're down lower a little bit, you get protected from

it. and if we stick with oakland and take a look at temperature trends today, nice day out their hive at 67 omorrow going into the mid 70's. you can see we say well above average through friday, but then notice we get to saturday. we drop down to 62 degrees. and the reason for that is that that high pressure will start to break down some taking you through to about friday night. start to see a little front tracking arross here. now. models are still a little iffy on exactly what's going to go down. but you can see today getting a little more bullish bringing a little rain our way. and you do see a little scare snow there, too. regardless of how much rain we get because those models can waffle back and forth a little bit a few days before we get towards this system. it's going to knock those temperatures down big time. so there we are above average wednesday, thursday, friday and then we come rolling down the hill. you can see we recover on sunday and you know, dry out and have a nice day there. temperatures will start to rebound as we get into next week. thank you, kyle. in the south bay, the san jose police union is calling on the city to give

mayor matt mahan more protection and this is coming after last week's altercation between a man and the mayor's security detail. >> kron four's dan kerman reports. >> doing an interview. it was last tuesday during a kron 4 interview with san jose mayor matt mahan. when an altercation erupted between this man. 35 year-old wesley pollard and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for the mayor. pollard was ultimately arrested and charged with felony resisting an officer by means of violence and misdemeanor battery and disturbing the peace. the incident went on for nearly 4 minutes before a community member helped subdue pollard. now in this letter, the san jose police officers association, he's calling on san jose's acting police chief and city manager to double the mayor's security detail. >> having only one officer's part of a security detail for high ranking member of the city. i was not sufficient was unsafe. >> steve sisolak is president of the san jose police

health this afternoon. a new study shows so-called burnout from our jobs can cause emotional and mental consequences by the age of 50. >> data recorded by the national long to to survey of youth show that people who work extra hours and get less sleep more likely to have depression and poor health. by the time they turn 50, however, for many simply just walking away from a job is not always the solution. experts suggest checking in on your mental health often. and remember to take regular

breaks from work. they also recommend getting a self care routine more than three-quarters of american workers say they have experienced burnout in their workplace. and forget those past studies that said a drink or 2 can benefit your health. there's new research now that could change guidelines and how much alcohol is too much. the study shows just one standard drink of alcohol which equals a 12 ounce beer or 5 ounce glass of wine can lead to negative health effects. the cdc says consuming any alcohol can increase the risk of cancer because the body breaks it down into a chemical which damages celss and prevents them from making repairs. some doctors also advise against older research that is suggesting possible benefits to moderate drinking. no more recent study. it suggests that actually there really isn't any level of alcohol consumption that is considered beneficial well wide. it's really important to have strategies for mitigating risk

and >> minimizing alcohol use. >> the united kingdom, france, denmark, there are among the countries investigating the benefits of consuming less alcohol or ireland. well, require cancer warning labels on alcohol bottles starting in 2026. and here in the u.s. the cdc recommends community strategies such as increasing alcohol taxes and restricting hours of sales in order to limit excessive alcohol use. for your money this afternoon. if you have not booked a summer vacation yet you might want to get get going this. if you have a trip coming up in august, the travel site. expedia says august is a less busy time for tourists. they say travelers can save up to $265 on round-trip airfare for that month compared to the last week of june. that's when average fare start to peak. they also suggest flying out on a monday for international flights or tuesday for domestic trips because it could save you some money compared to the more popular days of thursday and friday.

bus has been taking passengers across the golden gate bridge. but everything should be back up and running by tomorrow. and california is now going into the pharmaceutical business to combat the ongoing drug crisis as kron four's rob nesbitt reports, governor gavin newsom says the state will begin selling its own generic version of narcan. >> on monday, governor gavin newsom announced that his administration has secured a cal rx branded over-the-counter naloxone for $24. a pack. that's how much the state will pay. but doctor mark galli from california, health and human services says most of the twin packs used to reverse an overdose will cost consumers. nothing in san francisco. you picked one of many harm reduction or substance use disorder service providers. >> public health clinics, some of the commercial clinics will provide narcan to make it available. free of charge. the goal with the program, according to governor newsom's

households in estimated 27,000 of those are in oakland. new temporary housing is coming to san jose county supervisor. cindy chavez unveiled this project at the salvation army emmanuel house yesterday. that facility currently houses and 88 beds, sober living environment. the goal is set for to expand to 112 beds and then add some temporary housing on the property. mayor matt mahan was there and spoke about the importance of joint public-private investments like this. >> it's going to take all of us coming together with an all of the above approach from from the shelter to individual sleeping pods to more permanent long-term housing placements. we are using streamlining to our planning department thanks to state legislation to move these projects forward with less red tape to do it faster to do it. more cost effectively. >> the county of santa clara will invest 4 million dollars into this project. the city of san francisco will slow down

its plans for a traffic safety project in the city's west portal neighborhood. this is a group of business owners and neighbors spoke out against the plans that included a number of changes to westport are portal avenue. you love a street lenox way in clermont boulevard in response to these concerns, the city agreed to a more thoughtful planning process that will include input from the soon to be formed, welcoming west portal committee. in the north. right now, the city of la has started building a navigation center that's designed to tackle homelessness in the area. the city held a groundbreaking event yesterday. officials say the city and that the center's going to serve as a central hub for homeless people, providing them with vital services and shelter. it will offer 125 beds job training programs and more anticipation for this is high. >> community is very excited. iran has community is really looking forward to this as we're going out and doing outreach to they're asking when is an opening, when can we get? and we've had people

reach out already hoping to get on wait lists and they're they're ready for it to be here. >> the navigation center is expected to be done by december. a new antitrust lawsuit claims that 6 major hotel chains here in the bay area colluded together to fix prices using artificial intelligence. the suit is targeting the hotel chain's listed here on the screen and some others. they're also all clients have minnesota base, integrated decisions and systems incorporated. and san francisco based institute incorporated these companies partnered to create ai software, the collected information about each hotel, chains rooms, availability, pricing and other data. the lawsuit claims the ai algorithm then compared all that data and recommended what each hotel should charge for its rooms to maximize profits, which the lawsuit argues is the definition of price fixing the antitrust. a class action lawsuit was filed in federal court in san francisco last week. we're going to keep our eye on this developing story.

kind of changes a little bit. so wanted to just take a second to talk about this. not just because i love showing these pictures of the sierra. we have this beautiful lake and we have the gorgeous snowcapped mountains here. looking diamond peak and over the next couple of days, they, too, were going to see just some beautiful weather, right? lots of sunshine, a really lovely. but we get towards the weekend just as we're looking out for a chance. and it is just a chance of ra see we're starting to get some wild fluctuations in model showing some serious snow. now i am not married to that. i can tell you that that can change drastically between now and when we get towards saturday. having said that, i do think it is worth kind of mentioning that if you're headed to the sierra this weekend, you want to keep an eye on that weather because the timing for anything would be saturday afternoon through sunday morning. road conditions could be affected if the snow levels were to lower. now, they may very well stay very high and this won't be a big issue, but just a heads up that you're going want to stay aware as you head into the weekend if this year is in your plans. and then, of course, here in the bay area, we're going to be keeping an

eye out because we're looking out for a chance of rain in the models. are rocks also fluctuating a little bit on that as to how much and exactly what it would be. so kind of an interesting weather week as we wrap up this month and head into day back to you. turning now to some national news in the u.s. marshals task force is conducting an investigation in north carolina. >> after 4 officers were shot and killed while serving a felony warrant. 4 other law enforcement officers were hurt in this 3 hour long standoff at a charlotte home on monday. they say officers fired back at the suspect, killing him in his front yard. u.s. marshals say a second person also fired at officers from inside the home. and that's when armored vehicle smashed into the home, tearing it apart. >> battle over 100 gunshots. it sounded like 3? >> police say a woman and her and and a 17 year-old boy were found in that home. after the standoff. there were both detained a high powered rifle was also spout inside of the

home. authorities confirm one of those killed was a u.s. marshal. 2 of the others for state corrections officers. recent college grads are the target of a new online job scam. a wall street journal report is saying fake recruiters are using information they find online to claim an educator recommended a student for a job opening. the report says the scammers gain access into a professor's email or create a similar one in order attract those soon-to-be graduates to applying. and once the student applies for this fake job, the scammers can steal their identity or their bank information. the federal trade commission issued a warning earlier this month telling students be cautious of texts or emails that asked them to download any app to conduct a job interview. the u.s. is now facing a vet shortage, a report by mars veterinary health estimates. we will need an additional 55,000 vets by 2030, to meet the demand for animal care and it would take

30 years of graduates to meet the industry's needs for vet techs over the next decade. the first thing that the study points out is simply that more and more people are becoming pet owners creating a supply demand issue and expensive to become a vet in order to meet the demand of all this free patients. it's 4 years of college than another 4 years of vet school and more. if you want to have a specialty, many take on a lot of student loan debt in order to do this. but paying for school isn't the only issue either. it's also hard to get in. >> but it is not the case that that schools are going wanting for students. they have way more applicants than they can accommodate. and in fact, you probably heard this the saying it's hard to get into that school. that medical school. >> so this a veterinary health institute is also saying even with the new graduates over the next decade, a shortage of 24,000 companion animal vets is expected by 2030. they are suggesting that vet schools work to train up more vet tech so they can help with the.

watch what happens here as we get into tomorrow morning. notice an offshore wind, more of a northerly component happens and we relent a little bit at the coast and then this is my favorite part. they both start happening at the same time. this is wednesday afternoon. we're going to get that onshore push kind of battling that offshore push. what that means is we're going to be breezy throughout this weekend even taking you into thursday. here you see again, kind of some pretty pronounced onshore wind. so the breeze is going to stick with us as we go throughout the week right now, you see the flag start to pick up a little bit there here by the golden gate bridge outside of that, we've got some really nice temperatures today. we're going to warm up even more tomorrow. but you can see we are sitting in the upper 60's in spots like san jose, concord, santa rosa right now, 50's still in san francisco half moon bay. sunshine is on our side. absolutely beautiful. not just here, but throughout the state of california. high pressure shooting anything over the top of us and keeping us protected. so what does that mean? it means tonight we get another clear yet breezy evening where we're going to see some really nice conditions, minimal, if any
