>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> good morning. thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. it is tuesday. april 30th, i'm james fletcher in from harvey. and let's start with a check of the weather as we like to do first out of the gate. trouble standing by with a look at our forecast for this tuesday. good morning, john. good morning, james. we're looking at a pretty nice day ahead of us today. lots of sunshine in store across the bay area as we move into the afternoon. eventually. let's get a look outside right now in our view, from the east bay hills camera. usually a telltale sign of any sort of fog that is streamed its way through the golden gate. not really seeing a lot of that this morning. we do have some mid-level stratus that is hanging out right above the bay. currently now radar showing dry conditions and we are not seeing any chance of rainfall this morning for sure. futurecast winds does show a pretty steady sea breeze coming in from the coastline right now. elsewhere

in the bay area, though things are nice and calm. so that is definitely going to result a little fog at the coastline at some points this morning. temperatures are currently in the 40's to low 50's oakland and berkeley sitting at 49 degrees each while san francisco at 58 petaluma and santa rosa hanging out in the mid 40's right now. later on today, we will get to the 60's 70's for your daytime highs making for a pretty comfortable afternoon. i'll get to all those details as we go. michael thomas is in for traffic this morning. what's the latest on the roads? michael? hey, good morning, everyone. well, good news for this tuesday morning. we're not seeing too much confusion or congestion on those roads. >> taking a look at some drive times for you. those who are heading over towards the maze right now, crockett to them a 15 minute commute and it is all under 15 minutes from 8.80, from san leandro over to the maze along with castro valley to the me so good. taking a look at those bridges right now. the bay bridge does look good. it's a seven-minute commute over that. you can see no congestion. those metering lights are not on quite yet.

taking a look at the san mateo bridge, 8.80 to 1, 0, 1, 12 minutes. not bad. we will take a look at the richmond. sandra fell bridge. a seven-minute commute over that from tolls to 101. and lastly, that golden gate bridge is a 20 minute commute from 37 to the tolls. james, we'll send it over to you. all right, michael, thank you. 502, is the time and in the news will start in the south bay where in the wake of last week's fight between a man. >> and the san jose mayor's security detail which was all caught on camera. the police union is now calling on the city to give them a are more protection from force. dan kerman reports. >> doing it was last tuesday during a kron 4 interview with san jose mayor matt mahan. when an altercation erupted between this man. 35 year-old wesley pollard and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for the mayor. pollard was ultimately arrested and charged with felony resisting an officer by means of violence and misdemeanor battery and disturbing the peace. the incident went on for nearly 4 minutes before a

community member help subdue pollard. now in this letter, the san jose police officers association, he's calling on san jose's acting police chief and city manager to double the mayor's security detail. >> having only one officer's part of a security detail for ranking member of the city. i was not sufficient was unsafe. >> steve sisolak is president of the san jose police officers association. >> by doubling it increasing another officer. we feel nurse at eyes, another another set of readily available. definitely make everything safer going forward. >> in a statement, the san jose police department says it's reviewing the current procedures for the mayor's security detail. if they decide to bump up the number, it would not be unusual for a large city while san francisco police won't say how many officers are on mayor breed security detail. oakland police confirm the department generally provides to sworn officers for the security and protection of mayor thao. dan

kerman kron. 4 news. >> in the east bay, firefighters now battling a commercial fire in concord. fact, we've got some video courtesy of contra costa fire and this is the aereo sunset avenue and east street. you can see it's a pretty large fire now. luckily, this building is vacant. no reports of any injuries at the moment. but there are road closures there for sunset avenue, clayton road and east street. in fact, we're told these closures will likely last through the day. so expect heavy traffic in that area. the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. more developing news now. we have learned the names of the family killed in that fiery car crash last week in pleasanton as kron four's theresa stasi reports. investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of that crash. >> on monday, pleasant and police at the scene taking measurements and documenting other pertinent facts. there are more questions than answers right now as to what caused a fiery crash last wednesday night on foothill in

stone ridge road that killed a family of 4 notes and flowers along with parts left behind at the family's car now dot the landscape. police say that the family was apparently returning from the birthday party when for some reason, the electric car swerved and collided with a tree catching fire. >> right down the street from and their family, you know, like all rest of us and they have them. you know, he's seen him with their kids playing he writes, when i right my yeah, it's really and neighbor too upset to be on camera. talked with kron 4 news. >> go home this way. that was the next day. was pretty the names not being released to kron for news from the alameda county sheriff's department include. >> to run george 41 rowan george 13 and aaron george 9, the identity of the 4th victim, authorities say cannot be released yet. but sources

tell kron for news that was the wife rienzi george. to run worked in tech. he was with aruba and networking company for 11 years. in a statement, a spokesperson said, quote, we are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic accident to run was a valued alumnus of our hpe, aruba family, and our thoughts are with his family's loved ones at this devastating time, unquote. the boys ruin aaron attended pleasanton schools notes from their classmates. we're on a poster at the crash site. >> grief counselors have been called in to help children with the grieving process of losing a classmate in pleasanton theresa kron. 4 news. >> one of 4 children hit by car over the weekend remains in critical condition. that crash happened saturday evening on foothill and stevens creek boulevards. investigators say the driver of a pickup truck crashed into another car and then a power pole hitting the children who were on the sidewalk in. this is all in cupertino. they say

the victims are 4, 7, 8, and 11 years old. all 4 were taken to the hospital. investigators didn't say which of those 4 is in critical condition. the santa clara sheriff's office says the suspected driver was or the driver was suspected to be under the influence. in fact, that driver has been arrested and booked into the santa clara county jail. in san francisco. the sfmta now starting a new plan to enforce safe for parking. they say citations will be given to cars parked on sidewalks in bike lanes and in crosswalks, as of mta says their goal is not to punish people but to increase safety on city sidewalks and streets. meanwhile, in the north bay, the city of has started building a navigation center designed to tackle homelessness in that area. the city held a groundbreaking event yesterday. officials say that center will serve as a central hub for homeless people, providing them with vital services and shelter. it will offer about 125 beds. they'll have job training programs as well. anticipation

for that center right now is pretty high. >> so the community is very excited. i'm iran has community is really looking forward to this as we're going out and doing outreach to they're asking when is an opening, can we get? and we've had people reach out already hoping to get on wait lists and they're they're ready for it to be here. >> well, the navigation center is expected to be completed by december. well, new temporary housing also coming to san jose county supervisor. cindy chavez unveiled the project at the salvation army emmanuel house yesterday. the campus will be getting a complete makeover turning into about 112 temporary houses. mayor matt mahan was there as well and spoke about the importance of public private investment just like this. >> it's going to take all of us coming together with an all of the above approach from from the shelter to individual sleeping pods to more permanent long-term housing placements. we are using streamlining to our planning department thanks to state

legislation to move these projects forward with less red tape to do it faster to do it. more cost effectively. well, the county of santa clara will invest 4 million dollars into that project. >> happening today, state and local public health officials will join supervisor joel in to raise the alarm about the threat of hepatitis b in san francisco supervisor and guardiola has introduced a resolution to name a as tide is where month in san francisco at a press conference, he will call attention to the dire need of addressing rising rates of hepatitis b and c was also a call for expanding services and programs that the california department of public health and local nonprofits are doing to fight hepatitis. that press conference will be at city hall set to begin at 11 o'clock today. well, a man was found guilty for kidnapping that happened in 2008 and the 2015 attack. so investigators say both crimes happened in berkeley. they say keith kennard as barry approached a

teenager near berkeley high school, kidnapped and sexually assaulted her back in 2008. and then in 2015, they say he walked into a home and attacked a woman, but she fought back. investigators say justice was delayed in the 2008 case because the rape kit was not tested until 2014, 6 years after the crime. they say this resulted in asbury being allowed to roam free searching for more victims which resulted in that 2015 attacked and alameda county jury found as very guilty of both crimes. he's set to be sentenced in late may. april is the last fully funded month for a popular federal program that provides discounted internet to eligible americans. and that's raising concerns for thousands of bay area residents who rely on the affordable connectivity program. patrick may sick with oakland, undivided, which helped eligible people in the town. sign up, say that many people might not know that this program is coming to an end. >> we called 500 acp enrolled households here in oakland and

and we're back. 5.14, is that i'm here for things to know. santa rosa police say a man used sword while stealing an alcoholic drink from a restaurant on 4th street near old courthouse square sunday. they say they arrested the man after identifying him in surveillance video. personal data of millions of kaiser permanente. patients may have been leaked because of a data breach. kaiser officials say the leak may have happened when patients logged into kaiser's website or mobile apps. but they claim no user names, passwords or social security numbers or financial account information. credit card numbers likely transmitted. so that's hopefully some good news. the gardens of golden gate park is launching a new outdoor summer program just for kids who love being outdoors. garden camp

this view from mount tam, not a lot of mid-level stratus blocking this out this morning or marine level for that matter. we are seeing a little bit of that marine layer up and down the coastline, though we will have an onshore breeze that is going to keep our coastal areas on the cool side while the rest of us will enjoy some nice, comfortable 60's and 70's this afternoon, not quite reaching into the 80's just yet. for now, we are seeing a high pressure. ridge, as i mentioned, built up to the west of us. as of right now, this is blocking any lows from intruding our direction. but that does change this weekend as a low dives on into the day. it seems like clockwork that every weekend lately we've had a cool down in some showers and this saturday is going to be no different after what is a steady week with lots of sunshine. we do see another low dropping in from the north and west towards saturday. this is going to result in the potential of some showers as we make our way. she right there in the middle of your weekend plans. so we'll keep you updated as we do. get a little bit closer to that weekend. but as for now

anticipates saturday being a much cooler and potentially a bit of a weather, one, too. as for today, though, it's 60's in the city and 50's and 60's at the coast. that seabreeze in full effect today for the coastline 60's to 70's elsewhere in the bay area. and mike, i've been mentioning just a really comfortable feel hollow at 69 today. san jose. 72 for your daytime high. looking at some 70's as well for the inland east bay with 60's up and down the east bay shoreline, richmond dinner in debt. you'll be up to 70 while vallejo at 72 degrees. and santa rosa. at 75, tomorrow's temperatures will be a little bit warmer. we do have a few low 80's mid week in this forecast for wednesday and thursday for inland spots. after that, temperatures will back off and slide back down in the 60's at the warmest by the weekend as that low pressure dives in and drags in some cooler air along with that chance of showers on saturday but drying out quickly thereafter. michael. thanks, degrees. wow. haven't

seen that in quite sometime. well, good morning, everyone. and happy tuesday. >> the roads this morning at 5 o'clock are looking good as they normally do. taking a look at the antioch area. you can see it's a 15 minute commute from antioch to concord. those in the area. once you head over towards crockett, everything is clear from crockett to the maze. you're looking at a 16 minute commute. so not bad. those who are in walnut creek heading over towards 5.80. it's an 11 minute commute as you drive through or end in lafayette. no major delays. taking a look at the bay bridge right now. it's an 8 minute commute over that those metering lights are not on the normally get on at about 5.30. so just be aware of that. taking a look at drive times for those who are more inland livermore to dublin. it's an 11 minute commute, dublin to fremont 14 minute commute. san leandro to milpitas a 20 minute commute in milpitas to sunnyvale. only a 6 minute commute. taking a look at the san mateo bridge this morning. there is a wind advisory on that. so just be aware, as you're driving over that using both hands, noah eating or drinking this morning, we're breakfast when you're on that bridge. taking

a look in the south bay morgan hill to san jose, a 10 minute commute. and lastly that 101. we take a look from san jose to menlo park. it is a 28 minute commute. so all clear this morning, i will send it over to you, james. all right. thank you very much, michael. 5.19, the time in the east bay. police now investigating a solo crash that left one person dead in castro valley. >> monday at about 4.20, in the afternoon. the chp received a call of this crash that happened on paula mars road right near mile marker. 4 an early investigation shows that a black honda accord with 2 occupants was driving northbound when it left the road and crashed into a power pole that overturned the car into a tree. a juvenile passenger was pronounced dead at the scene the driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries. well, congress is trying to tackle anti-semitism with a new bill that could have major impacts on the protestslthat are happening right now at colleges across the country. supporters say the legislation would crack down on hate speech against jewish people. while opponents argue it goes

too far. washington correspondent hannah brandt joins us now live from dc with the latest on all of this. good morning, hannah. >> james, good morning. the building the bill rather is called the anti-semitism awareness act and it it would dramatically change the definition of antisemitism on the federal level, which could have some pretty important consequences. as the israel-hamas war plays out overseas, pro-palestinian protests on college campuses are capturing the attention of congress. it is long past time that congress act to protect jewish americans from the scourge of anti antisemitism on campuses. congressman russell fry says that's why he supports the anti-semitism awareness act. it would change federal anti-discrimination law to use the international holocaust remembrance. alliance's definition of anti-semitism, which would make certain language chance used at protests punishable by law. now more than ever, it is critical that the federal government's definition of anti-semitism.

>> is clear and uniform. congressman michael burgess says that would give the education department more authority. so universities are empowered to take appropriate and decisive steps. >> to keep students safe and respond. exercises of speaks with her so hostile. >> and discriminatory. but congressman jerry nadler argues the bill is too broad. this bill threatens to chill constitutionally protected speech. speech that is critical of israel alone does not constitute unlawful discrimination. instead, some democrats are pushing to pass the countering anti-semitism act, which would establish a national white house coordinator to combat antisemitism congresswoman mary scanlon called that legislation a much more bipartisan solution oriented useful bill. and congressman jim mcgovern agrees saying lawmakers need to come together on this. it is a mistake to not approach these issues with more unifying actions. >> in a split vote, lawmakers did decide to advance this

>> we're back at 5. 25 and in the east bay, pittsburgh, police say they've arrested several suspects now in connection with a recent string of catalytic converter thefts during their investigation. they say officers found items that could reveal where stolen converters were being sold. police believe this could unravel a network behind the staffs. officers didn't say

how many suspects there were, but we'll continue following the story. also happening today, the livermore police department is holding a catalytic converter at ching event with lost seat u.s. college again. ching is when catalytic converters are marked with a traceable id and that makes them harder to sell at least legally. the goal is to make catalytic converters less attractive to thieves and easier to trace if stolen cars can can begin lining up, starting at 8 o'clock on loop road. the last vehicle must be in line by 03:00pm. and you don't have to live in livermore, by the way, to take advantage of this. so there was suggestion you come on out. happening right now. today is national adopt a shelter pet day and one in 5 pets in the u.s. are currently homeless. according to a report done by mars. pet care, adopting a new pact will not only give you a loyal companion, but it could also help you form stronger bonds with the people around you. the report found 73% of pet

>> well, 5.c0, is the time. let's get a check of weather and traffic here at the half hour. we'll start with john trouble in the weather center. good morning, john. and good morning to you, james. today, we're starting off pretty clear for most areas skies out there looking good from the coast to our inland areas without a lot blocking out your view this morning, golden gate bridge right here. looking nice and clear from sutro tower looking down. we will be seeing a little fog up and down the coastline at times today. so do watch for that. for the most part, though, today is going to be another very mild one coastal breeze is in full effect for areas like santa rosa petaluma streaming right through the russian river into a few spots up north pacifica and half moon bay, a bit breezy as well. while the rest of us are nice and calm, temperatures

will rise pretty quickly. once the sun does eventually come up. right now, it's 40's and don't forget the extra layer this morning. berkley in novato city get staff at 50 degrees right now later today as that will be in the 60's with a lot of 70's along the bay shore as well as inland. michael. >> hey, good morning. everyone will take a look right now at our traffic. you can see nothing major, really happening overall in the bay area. but we'll take a look at some drive times. you can see right here if you're heading over towards 5.80, in the maze from crockett, it's a 60 minute commute. 11 minute commute from walnut creek to 5.80, castro valley to the maze. 14 minute commute. stanley and or to the maze. it's a 10 minute commute. a live look right now and our bay bridge. you can see it's only a 9 minute commute there. so nothing too major. taking a look at the san mateo bridge, 13 minute commute to get onto a look over at the richmond, sandra fell bridge. it's a 7

minute commute over that. and lastly, we'll take a look at r% that golden gate bridge. and you can see it's only 20 minute for that. i'll send it back to james. okay. time now is 5.31. >> and breaking news overnight. a massive fire has engulfed a commercial building in concord fact. nearby roads are closed as a result that could impact your morning commute. if you're in that area. kron four's will tran is live in concord with the very latest. we'll >> james, we are 7 and a half hours since the fire department arrived at the scene and they're not going anywhere because they are still dealing with the hot spots. you can see the latter fully extended shooting thousands of gallons of water down to the vacant building. we do know at one point the firefighters ran in, but it got so dangerous because they realize that the roof was about to collapse. and you can see there's the roof is gone. so they told everybody to get out. let me show you the video at this all went down.

probably even before 10 o'clock at night because the fire department said they got a late start because it's a vacant building. so there are no alarm systems inside to notify them. nobody inside to pick up the phone and call them. they believe this is a building that had plenty of squatters inside. it's a vacant building was known as park plaza. so when they arrived here, it was fully engulfed in flames. but they realize that maybe people were inside, which is why for a short window, it was safe enough to go in there. look for anybody. but then they realized it was simply too dangerous. so they ran out, raise their ladders and started shooting water down to the building. now that the flames had been knocked down, they were able to look through the building. you know, as best as they can. and they say they did not see anybody inside. so no injuries, no fatalities but the damage clearly done because this building has collapsed onto

itself. it had 3 stories. the bottom story was a garage and other 2 stories are office buildings vacant for quite some time. and because it was vacant, james, it was pretty much got it. and that allowed faster. had it been an occupied building with all the safety codes in sight. you can head out live right now. want to show you what's happening. this is at sunset and avenue just approximate maybe a couple of blocks away from the concord bart station. you can see the tracks to the left of your screen. trains are still going by. at one point there were that it would damage or effect at the very least the bar commute through this location. but it's not it was very smoky. some embers landed onto the tracks, but they have been cleared at this particular point. you can clearly see they still have their hands full despite not having the flames but inside

their hot spots. and once they knock all the hot spots out then and only then, will they go inside to find out the cause of this fire? back to you. >> interesting. okay. we'll thank you very much. we'll come back for more updates throughout the morning. it's 5.34 let's head to the east bay where police have arrested a man after attacked 2 people, including piedmont's police chief as kron four's tiffany justice reports that chief is now questioning why the man had been released from jail before serving his full sentence for kidnapping. significantly injured in an unprovoked attack. older gentleman and he had just gotten injuring a couple, my officers. and so it was at that point time, doesn't matter what think. you are. you know, we're in this we know we set up officer. my position would do the same thing. >> on monday, piedmont police chief jeremy bowers recounting attack on friday that had him face to face with a violent suspect around 4.20 in the afternoon. police were called to ace hardware on 12. 21

grand avenue after getting calls about an elderly man getting punched from behind. happened right inside of our front initially we thought it was a medical >> issue because there really wasn't anybody around. we had an elderly customer kind of walk through the door. >> appeared to kind of stop and clean as glasses. and a gentleman walked from outside right behind them. sucker punched him right into back of his head and knocked him out for quite a few minutes. store manager sean braga says the suspect 42 year-old willie gomer, ran back outside. >> and to the building next door, which is their garden center. that's where piedmont police caught up to gomer. she bowers says the suspect immediately initiated a physical confrontation >> attempted to were relegated to having to the on several occasions. in addition our oc spray pepper spray for lack better term. >> all of which proved to be ineffective on the suspect.

head into the city, everything is clear there. and lastly, we'll take a look at that golden gate bridge to 19 minute commute over it into san francisco. james, we'll send it back to michael. thank you. time now is 5.49 in the east bay. police now investigating 2 separate shootings that injured 2 people. >> the first shooting happened sunday night. it was just before 11 o'clock on 100th avenue, right near breed avenue. the second shooting happened just after 12, 30 monday morning. that was on 73rd avenue near holly street. investigators say the victim in both of these shootings were taken to nearby hospitals. anyone with information about either shooting is asked to contact police. well, a man used a sword to threaten a restaurant working in santa rosa. and here's a look at it. police say they were called to a business on 4th street writer, old courthouse square sunday and employee told officers that the man had threatened an employee with that sword that tk an alcoholic beverage and walked off. police arrested that suspect after identifying him on surveillance video.
