9:00 am
>> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at know, and the big stories that we're working on this morning. police are looking for whoever killed a woman in san jose. downtown will have the details. meanwhile, tensions are rising on college campuses across the country. >> calling for an end to the war between israel and hamas
9:01 am
were going to be live at the campus of uc berkeley. and a's fans are still calling for the owner to sell. we're going to have the latest on their demonstration in sacramento. good morning. i'm daria and i'm james. we'll get to those stories in a minute. but as always want to check the weather first, a live look outside beautiful shot of coit tower any way. just sunshine. i day james and darya. good morning. good morning, everybody. it looks like the fog also took the day off as well. nice clear skies work in this magic here. we even saw that at the coast. not going to provide a lot of warmth the coast to still be a bit on the chilly side. the other factor working here, those onshore winds, major drivers that low up in the northwest. it's going to be around for other 2 days or so as it kind of the partial see little warming happening even inland. this is a look at the winds are kind of variable right now. but the tendency is northerly and northwest and westerly. more importantly, there's a beauty shot of the east bay shoreline. look at that beautiful bay blue bay and blue skies temperature check. we're already at 62 for antioch. most readings in the mid to upper 50's at that. 59
9:02 am
san jose will do about 57 for san francisco fift 69 rather 1 o'clock. 4 o'clock at 72 and get ready for some lower 80's. going to do that by the latter portion of the week, james. all right. from temperatures traffic. a quick check of the roads this morning. and you can see we're getting better and better conditions here at the bay bridge toll plaza finally see an end to the back up there with a the commute beginning to thin out here. as you make youruway into san francisco. just 17 minutes. >> to get across the bay bridge, the san mateo bridge. look at that westbound. 92 lot of big gaps between the cars. you're driving at the limit across the span. just 19 minutes across the water. the richmond, sandra fell bridge that drive time dropping to just single digits. now, 9 minutes to get from richmond out towards marion county and then our last check for you. the golden gate bridge, the iconic golden gate bridge. we're drive times are live just north of 20 minutes to get nevada down into san francisco. you can see here the ride on the golden gate bridge itself. he's fairly
9:03 am
thin traffic moving at the limit. >> time now is 902. and the developing story that we're covering this morning as the students who are protesting at u c berkeley, they've been camped out now in their second week now calling for a cease-fire in gaza. we've got kron four's will tran out at the campus this morning with a look at conditions will. >> the protest is going on. meanwhile, the students are heading to class. they are looking to learn something from their professors. meanwhile, the tents behind me, the people inside there hoping to teach not just their professors, but the entire university about relations between israel and palestine. they are pro palestine here. let me show you video. not just of this quarter of this is just a sliver of it. but around the corner, you dozens of tents. they've been here for about 2 weeks now. and there's a huge banner that is hanging from sproul hall and
9:04 am
you can see a list of their demands. another demand that they have is for this, particularly the university to acknowledge that what's going on to the palestinians. it's called genocide, according to them. this is not happening. just here, of course, happening at many universities across the country, including stanford, which is across the bay is they are demanding that the university's be transparent to cut ties with companies that do business with israel, especially if a manufacturer war weapons. got a chance to talk to a lot of people this morning, including somebody up from los angeles inking about transferring here. she walked by the encampment. here's what she had to say. think that there's different ways to help. i don't necessarily think that you have to pitch a tent, although that is an option. i thought about it last night. >> but i'm sure that they need food and that they need water and that they need a place to maybe shower and come back. so
9:05 am
whatever i could do to help, i would. >> so you said that you might even think about joining them. if this continues after you yeah, i would see how i can help. there have been hundreds across the country, but mostly the protests have been peaceful, not a lot of damage. >> uc berkeley, that's it's the epicenter of the campus. and i mentioned that because this is where they get the most attention. also, right next to me, our police officers and the police department. they are here just in case they are needed. and i have to tell you, i saw police officers walking through the encampment, looking at what's going on, but not one time get the 2 groups, the officers or the protesters interact. >> all right. thanks a lot. we'll and actually we're seeing this happening campuses all across the country. so we want to take a look at some of the video of the other protests that are going on
9:06 am
with students demanding that you're never cities that they go to cut their ties to israel. you can see big demonstrations in some cases shouting matches. you can see here some more shouting. there been a lot of chance. and then there's been some confrontations, too, with police. there have been some situations where hundreds of students have been arrested and in some cases here, you can see that police in riot gear in some cases, at least one case. usc we know has already canceled their main graduation ceremony because of the protests that have been happening there. another developing story we're talking about is what happened at sfo. another united flight had to be diverted because of a mechanical issue. it didn't take off from sfo, but that's where it landed. as you can see here yesterday is just a live shot of the airport. it took off yesterday from sacramento and they were headed to denver when there was some kind of mechanical issue. it was a boeing 7.37. that had to land. they won't say exactly what the issue was. just that it wasn't an
9:07 am
emergency landing, but the pilots made a regular landing because of that issue touching down with 160 people safely transferring them to another aircraft and they made it on to their destination of denver. about 2 hours later. in the south bay. at least 2 people were injured in santa clara county. the sheriff's patrol says that a patrol car collide with another vehicle in san jose on commodore drive and king road. and it was around 12:30pm, in the afternoon yesterday. there are number of street closures because of this. the injuries were just minor. it's not clear exactly what happened. all we know that and a sheriff's officer patrol car was involved in that crash. >> well, sadly, a woman were shot and killed near downtown san jose. and police now are still looking for a suspect this morning. it happened in the area of north 4th and east saint james streets friday night. about 9 o'clock. police say the victim was found in the street. the shooter family ran from the scene. so they're
9:08 am
looking for that person this morning. neighbors say they did hear multiple gunshots, although at first they didn't know was gunshots. sounded like firecrackers. but they say police were on the scene investigating to about 6 in the morning on saturday. this is the city's 12 nomicide of the year. now to an update, story we brought you lake there last tuesday. the naacp now reacting to this incident in which a man attacked san jose mayor matt mahan. ys. >> assigned police officer kron 4 was interviewing the mayor on the sidewalk when this man since identified as 35 year-old wesley pollard stopped to confront the mayor and his staff. well, that's when the officer stepped in and told pollard that they were recording an interview and asked him to move along in response, holder became confrontational. as you can see, this video ended up attacking the officer in response to what happened, though, the san jose silicon valley naacp released a statement questioning the officers, de-escalation training. their statement reads in part, quote, the
9:09 am
officer involved in the altercation did not clearly identify himself as a law enforcement officer. and it appears that there was no legal basis for instructing the pedestrian to move from his location in a public space. the pedestrians reaction should have been met with a more measured response from the officer considering the circumstances. >> as fans over the weekend taking their protest against the team owner for the a's to west sacramento because that's where they are. is there going to be playing for free until there are a las vegas stadium is bill and these fans are upset about that deal. >> i mean, how is sacramento kings, mansfield, if if if another owner came about and say, hey, we'll let you play here for free. i mean, that's what he's doing. like, yeah, you might be moving. john fisher is the 3 years. but you're also moving in the summer of sell the summer boycott. these fans are passionate and you think we're just going to go away because? it's an hour and a half away.
9:10 am
>> in some cases you move in other cases you close after 27 years in business. there's a candy shop in timber on. >> that has to shut its doors. the owner says the rent was increased to a point that they not to run without this candy it's a destination for the kids to come downtown and get candy. this is kind of sad to see that like a child and never is going away. the shop is a sweet childhood memory for the owner to cam heartbroken. and i really am i, you know. this is been half of my life 16 years. jenny torres grew up in temple run and work to the candy store in high school in 2015 when the original owners wanted to
9:11 am
sell, she left her job as a teacher and bought it at just 24 years old. i close up that night and i was a business tourists. as in the last 9 years, she's experienced the ups and downs of running a business in a seasonal tourist town. >> during the pandemic, you know, i moved heaven and earth to to stay here keep profitable and keep paying the rent. i never miss a payment. torres says she was trying to renew her lease on main street. but when her landlord hiked the rent 60%, she says she made the difficult decision to close. once. i realize that they weren't really willing to negotiate. i haven't had a broker talk to them. then i realized that it was just going. i was suarez says this has other small businesses on main worried about being pushed out to their nervous having one in the street, the such a high rate would cause their regular rate skyrocket. you know, as word got out about the closure, the support came flooding in from the community. a lot of people
9:12 am
came and asked me what i needed, what i wanted. people offer to invest. people offer to, you know, pay the rent. a gofundme page was set up to save the candy shop. it's raised more than $6,000. tourists hopes one day she can open up the shop and a new location. but for now, it's farewell. assuming ever met has been coming to say goodbye to the candy look at that smile. i we're going to take away the smiles. torres is hoping to keep this sweet tradition alive by opening up another candy store somewhere else in town. >> with a different landlord, we reached out to her current not hear back in time for this report. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in timber kron. 4 news. >> well, still ahead on the kron 4 morning news, california's lieutenant governor says she is closely watching the case regarding fans on on house sleeping outdoors. tell you what she says could happen if the supreme court sides with the city.
9:13 am
9:14 am
9:15 am
>> that's 9.14, and it is sunny, really nice in the bay area. clear blue skies out there. dave, good morning. smooth sailing. good morning, james and our good morning, everybody. well saying smooth sailing. don't forget the winds will be with us. a good strong clip later today, east bay shoreline. there you have the sun joining us there. nicely blue bay blue skies all in tandem and driving the winds for the next 48 hours or so is the slow up in the northwest here? for the most part, we're not going to see much the way of intrusion of cloud cover. maybe some high clouds potentially. but back to those winds, even the general idea, it's mostly the coast that's going to be the heaviest impacted here. there's a little bit of pop that happens inland, but you don't actually get your winds until we get to middle of the
9:16 am
week. those are offshore winds. repositioning of this high. then that's going to give us a warm spell for wednesday. but more importantly, thursday and into friday. so got mostly sunny and mild with that cool breeze at work that you feel a little bit inland to keeping those numbers down just a bit because we get to about 80 by wednesday and we stay with that towards the end of the week. but by the weekend, it's a shock factor. again, you know, you shave off 15 degrees. more cloud cover winds will come with this. the question is about rain. so we put in showers question mark for this to see how the models come together with that. they've been trending drier, but we do it. that's going to hold there. but it's going to be that 60's in spots that are looking at 80's come the middle of the week. 65 san francisco will do about 74 oakland, 72 san jose. the bigger board, you see some middle 70's off to the east bay and a hodgepodge. meanwhile, up towards the north. so next couple of days, it's 70's get to about 80 or so come wednesday. there's your beautiful sunshine and half moon bay have warned that
9:17 am
extended forecast coming up in a bit. james. >> all right. thank you very much. daytime has 9.16, and time to talk winners and losers in a moment after we some quick bridge checks for you this morning where the golden gate bridge is looking pretty sharp as well. we make their way southbound on one on one. we're also looking at the richmond, sandra fell bridge where the toll plaza there shows a drive time of only 8 minutes to get from the east bay side to the north bay, the san mateo bridge also looking good. 15 minutes times get better and better with traffic speeding long here on westbound. 92. and then our final stop for you. the bay bridge where it's only 17 minutes to get from the macarthur maze into san francisco. >> time to talk winners and losers. as our financial expert rob black morning route. so i know that the some financials are coming up. apple, mcdonald's, coke and amazon. i think i own a little amazon. but to tell it's a set it and forget it so how are how are they expected to do? >> i amazon and they're
9:18 am
expected to do a nice last week, alphabet came out with google's numbers. and they raised their dividend. amazon hasn't created bennett given yet. so a lot of people expect it move stocks higher. so congrats on owning that. i own amazon as well. 4 out of 5 companies have surpassed earnings expectations. this quarter. so it's it's a nice quarter so far. this is the busiest week of the earnings season, which happens 4 times a year. apple comes out thursday, amazon on tuesday. there's a to to be watching and we have a fed meeting that wraps up tuesday wraps up on wednesday. so we're going to press conference. nothing is expected to happen. other theory about what could happen and when. >> ok, my ears always perk up. when you talk about travel stories and in this case, it's venice and i guess you would need to pay an entry fee. how are they going to work this logistically and how much would the fe? >> i don't know logistics of it, but it's about 5 eur and ultimately a lot of city just
9:19 am
get over run with tourists during the summer. and this is the first big city in the world to announce an admittance fee for visitors. it's tough city to get into the canals and such, i believe, and trying to stop the people that want to eat, pray and love for one day. only versus spending more time there. a of money as a city because tourists are kind of route and that kind of trash the place. so i get the idea i'm dying to see how it's executed. yeah, or if they put it like in a fee. >> and a percentage of your hotel bill or if there's a gate. i mean, there's all kinds of. >> yeah, i can't vision how they figure that out. i also didn't understand how you to work because i didn't realize, you know, i know commercials on tv. they make a lot of money. but wow, youtube is pulling in money. >> companies like with 60 minutes. they put their programming on youtube couple days after on the it's pulling in about 8 billion dollars in
9:20 am
advertising in the last 90 days. that's just the 1st quarter saying by 4 quarters. look at about 32 billion dollars in as little ads that run prior to your spot or you can pay 15, $16 a month and not get the commercials youtube for something that was one silly dog videos. it's it's a pretty big financial network. not time. and the whole model is different. now. >> the nfl draft. i'm surprised. i mean, i know people love watching football games, but to watch the draft that just surprise me that such big numbers. >> 775,000 fans actually went and then even watched on tv that's for detroit flint 160 million dollars and hotels bars and restaurants. next year's draft is going to be done at in green bay, which i don't think they do 75,000 people. that's a teeny tiny town behalf all of the town, so to speak. so i else it ended in a couple times this weekend. i don't know why forty-niners. they drafted a lot receivers, which can i
9:21 am
don't know why. yeah. >> i like i think here's what i like to see the jumping for joy. i like to see a call kids because they're so young, yea, with their families. and then i think there's sort of like a, you know, you watch curling in the olympics. you just want to i look a little >> for teams like the jets who are always bad, the dream dies day of the draft. so you get hope is eternal until after the draft and then reality sets in. so 40 years. we have a good year this year. i think the draft or the receivers, the record so they can pay receivers. alaska's pretty is about to make a lot more money as a quarterback. okay. let's ut since we did nfl nba. >> because there's also a new model. when i play here, they side with the network. i get that like espn. but when the if they would sign with amazon, what does that mean? >> amazon is worth 2 trillion dollars. so basically nba, their tv deal lapsed last month. so they had to deal with tnt and with espn for 26 billion for 9 years. now
9:22 am
they're starting to negotiate the final terms with prime video. amazon prime and with espn. but prime video's get regular season games in the postseason i'm pretty significant. so the nba wanted streamer. ultimately chose not. apple didn't use google they didn't use nbc and the steal the state with the s p n. and espn's going about 80 games down from 100 and there get the exclusive rights to finals on abc 8 to 10 year deal. it looks like in the wnba it could be packaged both with amazon prime. and espn with the steel. so pretty thursday night football on amazon. it's been kind of clunky but yet we tune in. we watch it we're a nation of 11 are live sports and i think this is a coup for amazon. pull this off, getting into the nba. very good. we've come full circle and talking about now. we'll be waiting for those amazon numbers today. all right. thanks a lot, rob. >> thanks and taking a look at rob contact information because a lot of people have
9:23 am
questions or suggestions for what rob should cover answer and you can go ahead and e-mail him directly at robert, rob black dot com or reach him on facebook or acts.
9:24 am
9:25 am
>> we are back. time now is 9. 24 and in oakland, the restaurant horn barbecue is officially back open after they have that devastating wildfire fans across the bay area came out to support its new downtown location. take a listen. >> the fire took a lot out of us. you know, i mean, those are flash and location actually celebrate. not 3 years there and then be able to open back up the bill to serve barbecue. what it's
9:26 am
about still bringing about family and li feel from the old the new just be a great heart. you know, the community makes me emotional, man. i'm just grateful people showing up supporting us. >> as a lot of people did. yeah. so there are a few things that survived the fire. you're looking at a couple of on your screen. one was the michelin on award and the american for a flag that was gifted to the chef by a texas pit master. so those are on display at the new location on 8th and broadway. so head out there. if you want to enjoy some good barbecue. all right. they're opening and asia sf has officially closed the nightclub. >> known for hosting dinner cabaret performances for of transgender dancers has been open for 26 years in the south of market neighborhood san francisco, the owner still hopes to provide pop-up performances to keep the legacy of asia sf going. but the permanent place is now permanently closed. peace
9:27 am
plaza renovations are now underway in san francisco's japantown. it was a groundbreaking you see here over the weekend assembly member phil ting says it's important to invest in api communities. he says that this is a step in a toning for forcing japanese americans out of this neighborhood in the past. and mayor breed was there as well as former house speaker nancy pelosi. also all in attendance. >> all right. we're going to take a break here 9.26. up next on the kron. 4 morning news. thousands of students in san jose showed off their engineering skills at a conference. we're going to hear about how this is all helping them with life skills helping them with life skills take with them going forward.
9:28 am
my late father-in-law lit up a room, but his vision dimmed with age. he had amd.
9:29 am
i didn't know it then, but it can progress to ga, an advanced form of the disease. his struggle with vision loss from amd made me want to help you see warning signs of ga, like: hazy or blurred vision, so it's hard to see fine details, colors that appear dull or washed out, or trouble with low light that makes driving at night a real challenge. if you think you have ga, don't wait. treatments are available. ask a retina specialist about fda-approved treatments for ga and go to gawontwait.com
9:30 am

9:31 am
for comparison, we're kind of close, but we're trailing a little bit up in the north bay. if you'll notice a couple degrees ahead across the east bay and south bay. 69 at 1 o'clock by forward to about 72 and looking ahead, got mid 70's for their part of the weekend. by wednesday. we're looking at about 18. alright, easy riser. james. all right. let's check the traffic real quick here. and it keeps getting better and better. every time we come back to the bay bridge shot. 16 minutes to get from oakland to san francisco. >> all looks great here at the toll plaza. you're not waiting too long to get through the gates. the san mateo bridge westbound 90 to know. you can see for yourself in the shot. traffic moving at the limit. just 14 minutes to get across the bay. the richmond, sandra fell bridge. hardly any traffic here on west bound 5.80, as you make your way from richmond out to sandra fell and then lastly, we have the golden gate bridge where the southbound 1, 1, writes been real nice all morning long. just 20 minutes to get from 37 down to the if only they could engineer a convertible that didn't get my hair, you know, ruined, right. so here's what i would like i
9:32 am
would like. and as we're talking about this engineering story, this is perfuct as these kids could do it. >> i would like a car that like would let the sun in. it wouldn't get me tan. yeah. it would mess up my hair. can some kind of a vehicle like that? maybe one of these kids can do exactly that when they get bigger the for 37 years, thousands of students been coming. >> to northern california to participate in this downtown san jose. basically, if the competition to showcase their and they do new kinds of products, new kinds of vehicles, you name it, they can invent it. >> let's check out what they did this year. >> over 500 teams of students from around 144 different schools from the bay area. and northern california joined together here downtown san jose for the 37th annual tech challenged. but the tech projects they're working go back months. >> we're means the end of the school year. but for these kids. >> really, fun. >> challenging the 37th annual
