to impact businesses while repair work at the terminals going so slow and supporters of the man who started a fight with the police officer in san jose are now calling for the officer. investigation will explain. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> well, good morning. thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news at 05:00am. i'm here for reyna harvey, james fletcher. we've dave spahr stand by the weather center with a check of our forecast on this monday morning. let's see what the week holds in store a day. a good morning, james. good morning. all quick check sfo. no delays going on this morning. fairly clear skies going on overnight, which is the typical marine layer near the coast in the bay a bit. >> yes, there's another system kind of agitating up to the north. all it's going to do is just delay the warming trend we see. so it's going to really be the 2nd half of the week are really going to feel it pretty much of the 70 story going on for most of those inland valleys. it looks like for the next few days. onshore winds, though you're going to feel it along the coast of this is what the current

readings are. little bit variable going on, but they will continue their trend on shore. so that means a chilly breeze, even lots of sun at the coast and keeping those numbers in the 50's and also hasten a little bit the climb in live in terms of temperatures not too bad. start for the day right now. 55 for antioch, a chilly 49 for livermore 50's light up the east bay shoreline with 53 for santa rosa. we're mostly ahead of where we were this time from yesterday with a couple pockets. they're trailing a degree or so. but it's pretty nice. soft landing for today. 55 by 09:00am. we'll do about 66 at high noon. looking for those inland readings reaching again to the 70's today through the middle of the week before the warm-up gets here, checking bay area, bridges change was going on. all right. thank you very well, so far so good. we've got nice light traffic here at the bay bridge. that's our first camera stop for you this morning. the toll plaza camera showing hardly any traffic making its way through the toll gate. so just 8 minutes to get from oakland into san francisco at the moment, the san mateo bridge is looking good as well as we monitor the westbound 90 to ride from

hayward out to foster city 12 minutes to cross the bay at that spot to the north. the richmond, sandra fell bridge. also looking nice and light west bound 5.80, traffic moving. well, 7 minutes to get into marin county and then our final stop this morning, the golden gate bridge where traffic on southbound 1, 1, looking pretty thin as commuters are making that drive from 37 to the toll plaza in just 19 minutes. more weather and traffic in a minute now. lets get to the headlines this morning. we're in the north bay after 27 years in business, the iconic candy store on main street in timber on is closing the owner says a major rate hike is forcing her to close up shop kron four's. sara stinson spoke with customers and the owner about what this means for the town. >> after nearly 3 decades of providing sweet treats the candy store on main street in tehran is closing. the store was packed with people sunday trying to get their favorite candies one last time. iran is not to run without this candy it's a destination for the

kids to come downtown and get candy. this is kind of sad to see that like a child and never is going away. the shop is a sweet childhood memory for the owner to cam heartbroken. and i really am i you this is been half of my life 16 years. jenny torres grew up in temple run and work to the candy store in high school in 2015 when the original owners wanted to sell, she left her job as a teacher and bought it at just 24 years old. i close up that night and i was a business tourists. as in the last 9 years, she's experienced the ups nd downs of running a business in a seasonal tourist town. during the pandemic. you know, i moved heaven and earth to to stay here and keep profitable and keep paying the rent. i never miss a payment. torres says she was trying to renew her lease on main street. but when her landlord hiked the rent 60%, she says she made the difficult decision to close. once. i realize that they weren't really willing to negotiate. i haven't had a broker talk to

them. then i realized that it was just going. i was suarez says this has other small businesses on main worried about being pushed out to their nervous having one in the street, the such a high rate would cause their regular rate skyrocket. you know, as word got out about the closure, the support came flooding in from the community. a lot of people came and asked me what i needed, what i wanted. people offer to invest. people offer to, you know, pay the rent. a gofundme page was set up to save the candy shop. it's raised more than $6,000. tourists hopes one day she can open up the shop and a new location. but for now, it's farewell. assuming ever met has been coming to say goodbye to the candy look at that smile. i we're going to take away the smiles. torres is hoping to keep this sweet tradition alive by opening up another candy store somewhere else in town. >> with a different landlord, we reached out to her current landlord, but we did not hear back in time for this report.

>> i'm sara stinson reporting in timber kron. 4 news. >> asia sf has officially turned out the lights. the nightclub was known for hosting dinner cabaret performances with transgender dancers. they were open for the past. 26 years in the soma neighborhood in san francisco, the owner says they hope to continue doing pop-up performances to keep the legacy of asia sf. well, turning to more developing news out of sfo are another united plane had to be diverted because of a mechanical issue. the flight from sacramento, the denver landed safely at sfo yesterday, but it's unclear exactly what that mechanical issue was. all we know is it was boeing 7.37. aircraft, more than 160 people were on board. spokesperson for united said the emergency was never declared and those passengers were put on a different aircraft in that plane landed in denver about 2 hours after the scheduled time. in the south bay. at least 2 people hurt when a santa clara county sheriff's patrol car collided

with another vehicle in san jose. police say it happened on commodore drive and king road just after 12, 30 yesterday afternoon. they say the crash caused a number of street closures. all passengers had minor injuries. it's not clear exactly what caused the accident, but we have reached out to the sheriff's office for comment. haven't heard back yet, but let you know when we do. a woman was shot and killed near downtown san jose. and police are still looking for a suspect. it happened in the area of north 4th and east saint james street. this was friday night 9 o'clock. police say the victim was found in the street. they say the shooter ran from the scene. neighbors in the area tell us they did hear multiple gunshots sounded like firecrackers to them at first they say officers were on scene until 6 o'clock in the morning on saturday. this is the city's 12th homicide of the year. now to an update on a story we first brought you last tuesday. the naacp is reacting to the incident in which a man

>> attacks and as a mayor, matt mahan assigned police officer kron 4 was interviewing the mayor when wesley pollard grew hostile towards the mayor and his staff and the officer stepped in between that person and the mayor. now in response to the incident, the san jose silicon valley naacp chapter released a statement questioning the officers, de-escalation training. it reads in part, quote, the officer involved in the altercation did not clearly identify himself as a law enforcement officer. and it appears that there was no legal basis for instructing the pedestrian to move from his location in a public space. the pedestrians reaction, although stating a warning should have been met with a more measured response from the officer considering the circumstances and quote. oakland a's fans continue protesting the team's move to

west sacramento next season they showed up in sacramento ahead of the rivercats game over the weekend. and you can see what they were chanting. they told us clearly how they feel about the relocation. >> i mean, how is sacramento kings, mansfield, if if if another owner came about and say, hey, we'll let you play here for free. i mean, that's what he's doing. like, yeah, you might be moving. john fisher is the 3 years. but you're also moving in the summer of sell the summer boycott. these fans are passionate and you think we're just going to go away because? it's an hour and a half away. >> well, meantime, there is a petition to remove the a's new play by play announcer jenny cavnar is the first woman in mlb history to serve as the club's primary voice in the petition. they say the main reason is comments that she made back in 2021. about the a's and vegas. the petition says that they're calling for her to be removed immediately. well, saturday marks one year since banko brown was killed outside of a walgreens in san francisco security video from

last april shows what happened. the private security guard involved claims that brown was shoplifting during the confrontation. michael and wayne anthony shot brown as he tried to leave the business a second time. the da's office did not try anthony because he argued self-defense claiming brown allegedly threatened to stab him. brown was later found to be unarmed. walgreens. the guard and the company that employed that guards were all fined. brown, a black transgender man was an housed at the time and a volunteer organization for young women's freedom center. the center issued a statement saturday writing in part, quote, bancos life was worth so much more than what it was taken for in the face of adversity. he was resilient and courageous. he fearlessly fought for the rights and dignity of trans people. police arrested 2 minors accused of carjacking and robbing a person in vallejo. police say that victim was sitting in his car right near halladay street and cassidy

street. this was tuesday night when a man apparently walked up with a weapon. the robert drove off in the dodge avenger. 2 days later, officers say they spotted that stolen car. they said the that ensued ended in berkeley after the driver crashed into another vehicle. police say 2 people then ran out of that car and across the highway before police ultimately arrested him. the miners were booked into the salon county juvenile detention facility. wow. culled businesses right now taking a hit as the sausalito ferry remains closed for commuters. the closures are now into their second week after inspection found that one of the pier pilings was damaged at the ferry terminal. very spokesperson says they can only work during low tide. so repairs may take some time. people living in sausalito say this is a big loss, not just for their town, but for anyone who might want to visit. >> i think everybody's businesses affected. 15 or more per cent. people that

visit san francisco, one of the things they have to do while they're in san francisco's take a ferry boat to sausalito and spend a day here in the in the magic kingdom. and that's what this is. >> the goldyn gate ferry is hoping to have the sausalito service back%up and running by some time next week. and while repairs are being made, a transit buses taking passengers across the golden gate bridge. >> still ahead on the kron 4 morning news and make a wish foundation celebrates 40 years here in the bay area. we're going hear the impact that organization has had on families that it supported over those years. plus, california's lieutenant governor says she is closely watching the case regarding fans on on house sleeping outdoors for going to see what she says could happen if the supreme court sides with supreme court sides with cities.

here are 4 things to know. a celebration of life is being planned for glide co-founder reverend cecil williams. wyden says the ceremony will be held sunday. may 12th at 01:00pm glide church on ellis street. williams died last monday at the age of 94. the annual library is closing tomorrow to have its roof repaired. that work is scheduled to take 6 weeks with the library reopening on june. 11th. meanwhile, the giants beat the pirates 3 to 2 yesterday. the judge will be on the road tomorrow playing the red sox in boston. first pitch set for 4.10, and the a's beat the orioles. 76 yesterday, they'll start a new series against the pirates tonight with first pitch at 6.40. well, as we

50's off towards the east. 49 livermore up to the north, a hodgepodge of 50's and 40's. 53 san francisco. 54 san jose. it is the onshore winds. that is little bit of a climate control that makes it kind of artificially cold really at the coast with the 50's able with the sunshine all day today and we'll keep those numbers inland down a little bit. as you can see those numbers getting up to the 20's a bit with that gusts going on readings again remaining into the 70's. it looks like today tomorrow really all the way until about wednesday or so. we'll start to but better warm-up to see the winds still hanging around on tuesday as well. so let's break it down for you today for early into the week. it's mostly sunny mild, a cool breeze with that 70 ish around the bay and then we get to around 80 inland by wednesday, late in the week. let's keep that trend going here with lower 80's expected warm and sunny. then this weekend that's interesting to see a system dropping south. that means cloud cover, colder temperatures and all but a shower question. mark, not exactly sure that's going to come together or not. we know the 60's inland are coming

back and that's going to be a big shocker from where we're going to be in the latter portion of the week. so it's going to be very much like spring where each day is going to be a little different. 65 san francisco, 70 for oakland. 72 for san jose. the wider board here show you some middle 70's going on far east and up to the north bay into the lower 70's. again, we're not seeing the jump in temperatures because those chilly winds keeping those numbers down as you see at the coast, 57 half moon bay, checking bay area bridges. what's going on, mister james. all right. well, so far, so good. nice and light. we're going to start with the bay bridge toll plaza where westbound 80 commute. >> from the macarthur maze to fremont street in san francisco's just running 8 minutes right now. no slow down at the toll gate whatsoever. we're also looking at traffic moving at the limit on the san mateo bridge westbound 92 from 8.80, up to 1, 1, on the peninsula moving just fine. 13 minutes to cross that distance. the richmond, sandra fell bridge looking good to just 8 minutes to get from the toll plaza out to 101 in the north bay. and as for the north bay, it looks like we're looking at a smooth

commute so far on southbound 1, one, the commute direction into san francisco from marin county. it's actually taken in 19 minutes to get from nevada down to the toll plaza there on the south side of the span, more weather and traffic in a minute. but let's get back to the headlines this morning and on the peninsula. san mateo deputies have arrested a man accused of taking a child the same day she was reported kidnapping, kidnapped. so deputy say a woman approached them outside of their headquarters on north fair oaks saturday afternoon to report that her 4 year-old daughter was taken from her by the child's father. they say the man's car was spotted driving down el camino real. he was taken into custody and the child was returned unharmed shortly after that report. well, a number of cars engulfed in flames across san francisco's tenderloin district yesterday morning. here's some video of fire crews say 4 cars. >> we're on fired about 5 in the morning. video from the citizen app shows one of the areas near van ness and hickory and rowe streets. they say the other fires broke out

on jones and eddie in the area of a hate and octavia and market streets. no injuries were reported. the cause of the fires are still under investigation. happening today. bay area rapper mistah fab is hosting an event giving educators the opportunity to address and share coping strategies for mental health. the motion of emotion is inviting men of color who work in education to generation our to a generation thrive in oakland for hour conversation about emotional intelligence. the event is free. the event kicks off at 5.30, tonight. well, san francisco has one of the biggest reading groups through the program. one city, one book. and this year, the san francisco public library shows the chinese groove by catherine mob. it follows a teen who moved from china to san francisco. the chinese groove is the unspoken connection among fellow immigrants. as together they navigate a new reality and this saturday mall will be

giving a talk at the main library about the book, the san francisco library also hosted the kickoff event for the api heritage month, which starts on wednesday. well, across the u.s. anti war, protests on college campuses are causing controversy. lawmakers are split in their reactions to the demonstrations and their views on how to handle them. we have washington correspondent hannah brandt. joining us now live from dc with more on the story. anna. >> james, good morning. these protests really range from march's to encampments. and we're seeing a lot of emotion from the students as they express their views on this global conflict. >> scenes like this are playing out all over american college campuses with students clashing over the israel-hamas war since the great american value to to protest. but i don't believe living in a pup tent >> us is really helpful on the

hill sunday. senator john fetterman raised concerns about the protests and on nbc's meet the press. senator mitch mcconnell called the situation dangerous. there's also anti-semitism. >> just completely unacceptable. many students are demanding their universities cut ties with israel and senator bernie sanders told cnn the raising legitimate concerns about the death toll palestinians and the humanitarian crisis in gaza. when you make those charges that is not anti semitic. >> that is a reality on fox news. senator chris murphy said he supports students demonstrating peacefully. 95 1% of the young people who are on these campuses are there because they believe there's a fundamental injustice being perpetrated. senator jd vance as well. students do have a right to protest. do not have the right to set up tent cities on our public spaces in turn our cities in the garbage dumps, that that is what i think we should not allow some college campuses have use law enforcement to break up the protests and hundreds have been arrested. but senator tim kaine warned against

escalating the response. the national guard going to college campuses, kent state and elsewhere did not end well. >> and i think that would be a very, very bad idea. >> some of the protests are threatening to disrupt the college graduation ceremonies that are scheduled that many of these college campuses with at least one already having to be canceled. james, back to you. all right, hannah, thank you very much. it is 5.22, and we'll be live at u c berkeley, by the way, where students continue to protest that war between israel. >> and hamas in the meantime, southwest ceo is hinting at an end to the airlines open seating policy. the ceo says it's too early to explain specifics but customer preferences regarding cabin seating is what they're looking into as they try to move forward. the ceo also adding that consumer preferences have changed southwest has collaborated on the ceo's comments, but some travel experts say it's all about money. >> if they change their

time now is 5.26. and amid the ongoing home insurance crisis here in california, allstate says it would resume writing new policies if regulators. >> allowed them to raise rates. all state stop writing new homeowner policies in 2022. citing wildfire risk here in the golden state. it's one of several insurers who either paused new policies or set strict financial loss caps. the all state official, i should say. but the allstate officially heard from says that if state regulators allow the company to charge higher rates based on natural disaster risk, well, then they would return to writing new policies here in california. april is world wish month and make-a-wish greater bay area is celebrating 40 years in the region. the organization held a reunion in san jose for families who have their wishes granted over the years. families like veronica johnson, her 2 year-old son was granted a wish before passing away in 2000. his wish was to see mickey mouse.

let's get a check of the weather here at the half hour. we've got dave spahr with on monday. outlook will see with the weak hasn't scored a today. well, good morning, james. good morning. all. let's check out your temperatures right now as we speak. that's not bad with the clear skies and all. >> 50's already in the east bay, a chilly 49 for livermore up north. mixture of 50's and 40's 50 for half moon bay. and 48 for a redwood city. pretty close to yesterday's numbers give or take each side of that. a little warmer, a little cooler than yesterday. pretty much the same. and the pattern is the same to know. we are getting a little bit of minor influence from the slow up north in terms of that onshore wind. that will be around for the next couple of days. and that we even keep the inland temperatures down from where they're going to be later for the warm-up this week. sfo, no delays going on up that way. might have some construction delays. minor. 45 minutes or so later. here's when tracker for you. kind of variable winds for now. but generally speaking, the readings are pretty light well inland again, being felt mostly at the coast. and that will be the case today. 55 at

student protests continue at u c berkeley as many rally to call for a cease-fire in gaza. the protest is now entering its second weekend. kron four's will tran is standing by live at the campus this morning with a look at how things stand. good morning. will. >> how things stand is exactly how they stood last week. you can see some of the tents over my right shoulder, james, and they're sleeping right now altogether, about 70 tents at sprawl. plus, an sprawl hall. they are being closely watched by the police officers. but so far it has been peaceful. let me show you the other protests that have been happening across the country at about 80 universities. many of them have probably never met each other. but the stand in solidarity at uc berkeley. they're demanding many things including uc berkeley acknowledge that what's going on in palestine right now is genocide. they also have other demands that say that the universities and this is pretty much common place at all of the protests across the

country that their universities cut ties with companies that do business with israel as well as manufacture weapons. they will continue doing this. and for the most part, it has been peaceful. there have been hundreds of arrests where police officers have moved in. but we have not seen any widespread violence at uc berkeley at stanford or at the other universities. keep in mind, this will continue indefinitely. these we've seen protesters, of course, where people are career people where middle-aged and they come out and protest. but that universities predominantly james, they are being done by students who sleep in the tense in the overnight hours and then go to class. keep in mind the graduation. it's just a few weeks away, but they have 2 things in mind. obviously, their classes as well as world events. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. well, it's 5.34 in san

francisco. a man has been sentenced now to 10 years in prison for promising to pay an fbi agent $50,000 to murder his acts. allen guy, son was in a years long legal battle over custody of his 2 children with his ex-wife officers or officials say that his original plan was to bribe immigration agents to deport his ex to her home country. they say he then plotted to kill her. this happened back in 2022. when the sun met with an undercover fbi agent and 2 associates or i should say on 2 occasions, the sun wired a total of $23,000 to an fbi undercover bank account in san francisco. police arrested a homeless man accused of attacking 2 people, including piedmont's police chief. it started friday at ace hardware on grand avenue in piedmont. police say they received a call about an elderly man being hit from behind. the suspect identified as or gomer ran next door. police say gomer looked like he might be under the influence of drugs. they say he attacked officers

and that's when police pepper sprayed and tased him. but they say eventually broke into a home and threaten the resident. police say he then ran outside was confronted by piedmont's police chief jeremy bowers. they say comer managed to get into bowers police car bowers and tried to keep the man from driving off by approaching him from the opposite side of the car. and that's when the chief was attacked. was ultimately arrested on several charges. new video shows a helicopter rescue at state park. san mateo county. firefighters say they helped an injured hiker. get home safely. can see the airlift here. they used a truck a tv to find the hiker and then had to lift him through the trees to get him to safety. in the south bay. for 37 years, thousands of students around northern california came come to downtown san jose to show off their engineering skills. it's called the tech challenge. and this year's event brought in 2000 students to the
