center of the investigation is the sedative, xanax. >> reporter: dea agents guns in hand and white protected suits. we can't show you their faces but they were everywhere. >> wild. what's going on now? >> reporter: this is exclusive video of a massive drug operation ripped apart in concord. >> it's large. i can't go in to specific details but it goes beyond the bay area. >> reporter: agent goldberg says it goes international. inside office units number 2 and 4 on solano way, barrels of drugs, drug making ingredients, and drug making equipment. >> did you notice anything suspicious? >> no, not at all. very quiet. >> reporter: i can't -- >> i can't go in to details but it's been going on a number of months. >> reporter: what they've found here, tens of thousands of pills, xanax, not even being pushed from out of here but being made here. >> i'm not surprised. >> reporter: he says he's worked at the industrial park for 18 years. he saw nothing out of the ordinary but he said

his neighbor did see a number of individuals. >> my neighbor said he saw they were over there for 24 hours a day and that seemed kind of strange for around here. >> we found something in every place. >> reporter: agent goldberg said seven people were arrested and after the eight-month long investigation, multiple law enforcement agencies were executed including in pleasant hill, areas of vacaville, unincorporated contra costa county. >> it's a constant battle. we feel really good about our efforts to try to reduce the amount of drugs on the streets available for our teens and young adults. >> reporter: units 2 and 4 are blank. the seven suspects arrested are expected to be in federal court in oakland tomorrow morning. all the details related to the charges including estimated value of the drugs remain under seal. san francisco firefighters are now in trouble in connection with the crash in which a former firefighter is accused of driving a fire truck while

drunk. surveillance video will show you here taken last june shows the ladder truck hitting ting a motorcyclist on the street. the suspensions range from 10 to 30 days. the firefighters' union tells us the suspended firefighters were only following protocol after the crash. >> we're rather stunned at these suspensions bought what you have here are a bunch of men and women faced with a difficult situation and they did the best they could. >> former firefighter michael quinn resigned after the crash and is facing three felony dui charges. a major freeway interchange remains shut down in vallejo because of a brush fire. the fire was reported about 5:45 p.m. all the ramps were shut down while fire crews attacked the vegetation fire. between the closures and drifting smoke, the fire caused pretty serious backups. a sig alert remains in

effect for that area. a vigil is happening right now to remember poet maya angelou. many people thought of her as the conscious of america. this is a live picture from kaiser park in oakland has people gather at remember the monument to reflect on how her words touched their lives. maya angelou passed away today in north carolina. she was 86 years old. many accomplishments, she was a poet, novelist, actress, and recipient of the presidential medal of freedom. maya angelou first achieved fame from her 1969 memoir "i know why the caged bird sings." her literary agent said angelou had been frail for some time and had heart problems. the world is remembering the literary icon, you may not know that she broke barriers here in the bay area under a different name long before she was known as maya angelou. rob roth tells us about her san francisco roots and talks to her son who lives

in oakland. >> reporter: with a real bearing after a poor upbringing, maya angelou was an author and is poet with a voice powerful enough to inspire. perhaps the most famous moment was when president bill clinton asked her to recite a poem at his 1993 inauguration. >> lift your eyes upon this daybreaking for you. give birth again to the dream. >> reporter: as a teenager she moved to san francisco from arkansas. that's her in this 1945 washington high school yearbook picture. her name was marguerite johnson. she became the first african american female conductor. >> i had a cap with a bill. and i had a money changer and i wore a uniform. i said, step up, please. >> reporter: we spoke with angelou's son, guy johnson, who lives in oakland. he told us what she did when he misbehaved.

>> she'd say, would a person who has any conscious do something like this? >> reporter: he told us what he'd miss most about his mother. >> her love. and the ability to call her. i saved her last message on my phone and i'm never taking it off. >> reporter: reverend cecil williams and his wife janice knew her well. >> i married her. >> couple of times. barbara headed back to class today in the aftermath of the deadly killing spree less than a week ago. many are still struggling with the tragedy. 22-year-old elliot rogers shot and stabbed six students to death and took his own life during friday's killing spree. a show of support for the victims in the attack is set to take place in about one hour on the uc berkeley campus. the isla vista rampage is further fueling the debate over gun control mental health assistance. the investigation found that in a series of mass shootings, the gunmen were identified with mental illness but did not get effective treatment. national alliance on mental illness says that's the biggest problem they get on their help line. >> don't know where to go. the main thing is people feel completely alone. >> a bill proposed in congress would reform the nation's mental

health system. it calls for training on law enforcement how to better identify mental illness. now to the east bay where gun violence is an issue in one city. 90% of the killings involve a firearm. paul chambers live in richmond where you've learned what officererize doing to get guns off the streets. >> officers say they can get as many as 400 firearms off the streets in richmond. they believe the more off the street, the safer the community. >> reporter: for eight years now sergeant eric smith worked in the homicide unit. he said in 90% of the crimes, a firearm is used. >> having these guns recovered definitely makes me feel better and we know they're not going to be used in another crime. >> reporter: inside 2,000 firearms are stored, down from 5,000 just seven years ago. this wall filled with bins all containing guns. the other wall, dozens of boxes with

rifles inside. officers say all the firearms were used in crimes still under investigation, some dating back to crimes committed in the 60s. >> our office often encounters people who have guns. guns are used in a lot of crimes here in richmond. >> once richmond police confiscate the guns, it stays in one of these bins until it's clear. from there it ends up right here. the weapons in the yellow bin will be melted. police destroy anywhere from 500 to 800 firearms each year. as officers work to make the community safer, removing the firearms from the streets seems to be lowering the number of gun-related crimes. in 2011, 26 people were killed in richmond. that number dropped to 18 in 2012, 16 last year. >> there's been a decrease in violent crimes citywide which is a good thing. gun violence is down as well. one gun crime is too many. >> richmond police say the district attorney's office and the people right here in

richmond help get those guns off the streets. live in richmond, paul chambers, ktvu 2 news. no suspects in the deadly shooting of a man at a crowded gas station. a second man was wounded in last night's shooting. witnesses tell ktvu another man was struck in the foot by a stray bullet and is expected to survive. the victim's name has not yet been released. health officials are reporting more illnesses linked to foster farm chickens since the salmonella out break began more than a year ago. the centers for disease control says another 50 people have become sick. the total is 574 people. the national resource s council says the government must step in and it filed suit to ban certain antibiotics. they blame the overuse of antibiotics for development of salmonella strains resistant to antibiotics. it says 80% of all antibiotics sales are for livestock. >> the problem comes in when

new information on the story of the hero cat that chased off the dog. we're learning the labrador-chow mix was euthanized. the boy needed stitches on his leg. the video of the attack was released by the family of the little boy. the cat named tara even threw out the first pitch at a baseball game. it appears it's back to square one for the search for malaysia airlines flight 370. cnn is quoting a u.s. navy official who says they don't believe the pings came from the black box flight recorders. the pings sent teams searching 329 square miles of the southern indian ocean. it's possible the pings came from the drone submersibles being used or the ship. a short time ago a u.s. navy spokesman said dismissing the pings was speculative and premature. veterans affairs

investigators have substantiated serious conditions at the va hospital in phoenix, arizona. according to an interim report released today, the report shows veterans in phoenix waited an average of 115 days for their first appointment. three months longer than the hospital reported. in addition, investigators say they found 1700 vets waiting for medical care but who were not on an official waiting list. 42 va facilities are under investigation for possible abuse of scheduling practices. the ymca of silicon valley failed to properly supervise an aide accused of molesting four young girls. that's what a lawsuit filed today by one of the little girl's families claims. nicholas has pleaded not guilty to child molestation charges. the civil suit said the ymca violated state law by allowing him to be left alone with children and that it failed to insure he only worked under the direct supervision of a

qualified teacher. >> larimay had been given access to young kids, basically doing what he wanted to do with them without any supervision what so ever. >> the suit seeks unspecified damages. the ymca says it has not yet seen the suit and denies to comment. apple today announced it has agreed to buy beats music and beats electronics but at a trimmed down price. apple will pay $3 billion for the two companies. it's the most expensive acquisition in apple's history. the cupertino company reduced the price from $3.2 billion over concerns of the streaming music service which has only 11,000 subscribers. it was founded by dr. dre and jimmy ivy and initially to improve the sound quality of apple ipods. he's the man behind a social media scavenger hunt sensation and sat down with us for an interview.

alllie rasmus spoke to the man behind the twitter account. >> reporter: when we walk through the park lot with a man named hidden cash, not a single person noticed him taping up this envelope with money. >> you can see a caffeinated mermaid from here. >> reporter: 5 minutes after tweeting out a clue, carlos from san jose had the envelope and extra cash. >> $225. >> reporter: even after carlos and the envelope were long gone, the treasure hunters kept coming. >> this is exciting. a treasure hunt to me is like really exciting, gives me something to do. >> reporter: they had no idea the man who left the cash here had blended back in to the crowd. >> i thought it was going to be a local san francisco thing. it's obviously become a worldwide phenomenon. >> reporter: the man behind the hidden treasure hunt said the past week has been a whirlwind. he started the project thursday night and less than a week later he has thousands of followers on

twitter. none of people here got the money but just about everyone left smiling. >> are you disappointed? >> no , there's more. there's more. we've still got all day. >> how fun is it? >> is fun. it's exciting. we need this . >> reporter: hidden cash said he made his money in real estate investments. we checked and he does work in the industry. he said his online scavenger hunts are for the game to go global. >> it can't be just about me as one person. it has to become some kind of movement whether it's a nonprofit foundation or social movement or idea, i hope to harness it for good. >> reporter: hidden cash wants the treasure hunts to remain fun and civil. he said if people start becoming rude or violent

while searching, he'll stop them. we were live on the air this morning when you see a man spotted one of the hidden cash envelopes in san jose. the happy man is alex doxie. he just found $135 in that envelope that was taped to a fire hydrant. he told us he plans to take his wife out to dinner with all that cash. so happy. if you're headed out to dinner, out for a walk, tonight is the night to do it. >> what would you do if you won? >> $135 probably pay bills. >> weather outside looking pretty good as far as continuing with the mild temperatures, mid 80s in the warm spots, 70s around the bay, and breezy at the coast. windy out there today. here's the satellite loop. no fog coast side. without fog it's kind of nice on the coast. except for the wind. on the great highway the winds are howling out there, 25, 30

so far millions as rare coins are being auctioned off. the man handling the sales estimates the value of the coins to be $11 million. the gold coins date from 1847 to 1894. they came from the san francisco mint. the couple plans to donate some of the money for the restoration of the san francisco mint. two students from the bay area are competing in the sprips national spelly -- scripps national spelling bee. one of only 46 students out of 11 million who made it to the semifinals.
