memorials are forming at the site where six people were killed eight others wounded. this memorial is where shots were fired killing a man. a pe -- memorial is scheduled for tomorrow. >> all were young students. three were from the bay area. roger killed them in his dorm room. and the last victim was a 20- year-old man who was at a deli. >> he refused to take his anti psychotic medication. the gunman posted his video hours before the rampage saying his so called day of retribution was about to

me. >> reporter: authorities say at the hands of elliot roger the, these victim's lives were cut short. among the victims wong a teaching assistant for the rainbow school. >> i heard nothing but good things about the victim. >> reporter: a leland high school graduate and counselor for the summer camp in san jose. >> just a wonderful boy. he was involved in the community, they tried to help people. >> reporter: a fremont christian school graduate. neighbors trying to console grief stricken parents. >> i know they were very sad and they were in mourning. so i think this entire neighborhood just kind of our hearts go goes out to the kid especially. >> reporter: all with promising young futures.

according to plan. workers have been working on i80. work is still being done. ken any chance the road could open sooner than that. there is a chance here is what we know. he says he can guarantee that i80 will open by tomorrow morning, if it opens early that will not happen before midnight at the earliest. the work crews ready to stack up those traffic cones are on hand. they will close i80 to replace

nation's fallen military men and women on this memorial day. president obama layed a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. the president said everything this nation holds precious was made possible by those who gave their all. while he did not specifically mention the scandal at the department of veterans affairs he did say the country had to do more. >> these americans have fulfilled their duty, they ask nothing more than the country does ours now and for years to come. and at the ceremony, this 3-year-old boy. his father died before this

little boy was even born. like a woman you're about to meet from sonoma who just wanted to say thank you. >> reporter: the memorial day procession into san francisco's precidio ended with a sea of white tombstones. this ceremony was focused on the veteran war. >> i just thought it would be like world war ii when you were welcomed. >> reporter: today's ceremony helped heal some painful memories. >> it was heartwarming for me. >> reporter: visitors here found other ways to pay

we have developing news right now of evacuation orders in mariposa county because of an out of control wildfire. about 200 homes on lake mcclure are threatened. that fire was first reported at 3:30 in the afternoon and is now about 500 acres. the hunters fire started at hunter's road but spread quickly in the dry foothills. calfire is fighting it on the ground and has had to stop the air attacks because of darkness. right now there's no containment. eight people were displaced because of an apartment fire. this is video of the scene. the fire which went to two alarms was reported shortly after 8:00 tonight. there are no reports of any injuries the cause of this fire is unknown. a celebration tonight of a life that was cut short. a high school student from rohnert park would have turned 18 but she was killed earlier

this month in a car accident. friends and family gathered to mark her birthday. the high school senior was killed on may 6th when the car she was in hit a tree and flipped over. tonight family and friends tried to comfort each other and they remember all the joy that ashley had brought into their lives. an injuried chp officer is rerecovering. officer rutlidge made a traffic stop. that's when a third vehicle drifted on to the shoulder and slammed right into the back of his car. the woman driving that third car said she had fallen asleep. people have been sending the officer get well notes on facebook and doctors expect him to make a full recovery. >> he is under great care. he's being well taken care of. he has his family with him and he's expected to make a full recovery. >> reporter: the chp says this accident demonstrates how dangerous it is to stop on the

shoulder. officers say you should never do so unless you're car is completely broken down. as for the driver of that vehicle that hit rutlidge she is not facing any charges. new at 10:00 tonight, the debate over the fate of a memorial on this memorial day. there are questions about that site. for years now thousands of crosses you have probably seen them have lined a lafayette hillside to honor the fallen from the iraq war. now there's talk about taking them down. jana katsuyama there's questions about this site, it faces an uncertain future. >> reporter: it has become such a landmark that now it's creating new controversy about what to do with all these crosses here on the hillside.

as the sun went down, the crosses on the hill stood almost as witnesses for each soul killed. >> and tonight people gathered to remember them. >> he was killed in an ambush attack in afghanistan on november 9, 2007 at the age of 23. >> reporter: gold star mom roxanne landoven lost her son. she is one that came out here to spend some time with the cross. >> i love it. to me it's a sacred place. i think it's a way to memorialize all those who lost their lives. >> reporter: at tonight's vigil she talked about the time john's daughter zoey first saw the hill. >> we reached the bottom of the hill and zoe turned to me and asked me, mimi why are there so

many crosses. it was so heart wrenching. >> reporter: creating a heated controversy over what the crosses meant. >> i made this cross. >> reporter: for heatley it was a protest. >> it was a protest against forgetting. whether you support the war or against the war we didn't want these troops to be forgotten. >> reporter: now some crosses are worn down to bare wood but the hill has taken on its own life. a reflection of people from different background. >> it remind you that someone is there. and the memory. >> reporter: many don't want the crosses to come down as the troops return home. >> i would like to see it stay. because i think it's very beautiful. >> reporter: the memorial's founder says he's already met with the land's owner and is ready to speak about creating a

hot embers sparked a fire. a battalion chief told us the fire season is about five weeks early because of the drought. and that embers from the dry brush kept jumping the containment line. he also said there's a known homeless encampment at the fire site but at this point the fire is still under investigation. a man is accused of strangling his wife in free phopbt -- fremont and is due in court tomorrow. police released this booking picture of singh. he was tracked down in milpitas

hours after investigators say he left home with his passport. police were called to royal palm drive yesterday morning after family members discovered the body of anita sidhill. evidences suggest she was likely strangled and that si ng has confessed to the crime. as ktvu's cristina rendon, the victims had just left a concert in near by concord and police are turning to cell phone records for clues. >> reporter: bullets went off like fireworks in this walnut creek street. he opened fire on a man and woman inside a white mercedes bends -- benz. >> it has never happened. it's very unusual for something like that to go on. we were very surprised.

>> reporter: the couple had just left a concert. the mass gunman pulled up next to the couple's car and opened fire. then he got out of his car and kept shooting. the 23-year-old woman is out of the hospital but the 36-year- old man is in critical condition. investigators were going through cell phone records to figure out why the gunman targeted the couple. >> it looks like they may have known each other or there may be some connection there. we're not too sure about that right now. it doesn't appear to be any kind of random type act where it's a random drive by shooting. >> reporter: investigators plan to review footage. despite the unusual shooting homeowners say they won't let one crime rattle their peace of mind. >> i think it's still pretty safe. i think it was fairly random. >> it will not change how i feel about the area or what i do. >> reporter: the gunman was last seen driving toward concord in a light colored sedan. possibly a honda. police really need to talk to more witnesses they're asking

from serious injuries. >> reporter: we're at san ramon valley high school where the young man played varsity water polo and is well liked in this community. lori york says that athergy and her son played water polo with her son since in high school. >> we were very competitive. we had a great team. and so he's one of mine. you know he's one of our boys. >> reporter: at around 6'4", york says nick was a phenomenal swimmer and known as the king of the backstroke. beyond his athletic achievements he was a great guy. >> he is polite, goofy, silly one of the playful ones. >> reporter: roger struck smith during the rampage in santa

barbara was upsetting. >> it was very bad. >> reporter: york says she texted with nick and has spoken do his mother. >> he broke the right leg below the knee then he shattered the left leg. so there's not like one leg that's not damaged. >> reporter: despite his injuries, york says nick is in good spirits. he is a freshman at the university of the pacific where he's also on the water polo team. i spoke to his coach earlier. >> he's a hard working kid, has a lot of fun and keeps the team upbeat. very talented athlete. >> reporter: as a mother york says her heart goes to nick and his long road to recovery. >> he's going to have to have a lot of rehabilitation. that bothers me a lot. it bothers me that there's other families that have to deal with the death of their

families. >> reporter: smith says that york's family is looking forward to have him come home for his recovery. monitoring social media for threats is a growing field. one company called geo listening works for schools. they look for key words and then let schools know if there's a threat. >> no school district can filter through all of the information that's out there. in an effective manner. >> reporter: then it's up to school administrators to have an action plan and try to get help for that individual. in the case of the gunman in santa barbara his family was alerted to the video and tried to intervene. unfortunately they were too late. people are also asking whether laura's law could have

helped prevent the tragedy. laura's law is named after 19- year-old laura wilcox who was killed 13 year ago by a mentally ill man who refused treatment. state law requires each county to approve its own program. the issue will go before voters in san francisco in the fall but city leaders may act before then. stay with ktvu for the very latest. we'll keep you updated in all of the our newscasts. we're also posting updates on face book and on twitter. it's easy money for a man who has made millions and wants to give some of it again. this man says he has given away $5,000 with no plans to stop. ktvu's allie rasmu spoke to this mysterious man, he tells her why he is doing it and where he wants to take this scheme. >> kind of came up here.

a wildfire in alaska has

now burned 250 square miles. the funny river fire as it's called has forced the evacuation of about 1,000 homes. firefighters are hoping the forecast for rain tomorrow is accurate. fires are fairly common in alaska. but it's early for that and this year has been unusually warm and dry. this has just been one of several wildfires in alaska. rescue teams were unable to find any trace of hikers missing. the slide is several hundred feet deep. it came down yesterday from mesa. the men were checking a clogged irrigation pipe when it happened. a top nigerian military official says he knows where missing girls are located but

people to see memorial day as more than a four day weekend or a day to bar-be-que. >> reporter: he said it's a time to help those struggling after is service to their country. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. veterans were honored during a memorial day celebration on the uss hornet museum in alameda today. there was also a special guest at the ceremony. captain chin is a decorated civilian pilot who is credited with saving u.s. military personnel during world war ii. organizers of today's events say chen turned 101 years old today. more backlash against sea world in san diego this time in the form of vandalism. you will see here someone scrolled graffiti on the exit sign for sea world. but it's unclear just who is

responsible for defacing that sign. most of the bay area in the clear right now. the wind still a factor. they really picked up late this afternoon into the evening hours. still gusty winds especially at the coast and around the bay. as far as stronger winds, you can see 55 miles per hour. mount diablo and sfo wind gusts to 45 miles per hour. 30-miles-an-hour in san francisco. there's the fog hugging the coast of southern california. some patchy fog will redevelop just off the coast and push. and with that, that's going to cool off the entire bay area. so in fact, earlier today we had patchy fog developing to the west of the golden gate bridge. so temperatures tomorrow that strengthening sea breeze. they'll come down four to 8 degrees from today's high. a bit cooler that will be the headline as we head into your
