the tragedy near uc santa barbara now being felt closer to home as we learn that three of those victims were from right here in the bay area. this as a community continues to cope following a deadly rampage that left seven people dead. >> it really shook us from the core. from the inside out. we can't believe it happened here. good evening everyone i'm

heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. we have information of the victims, they were george chen and cheng yuan hong. both of them roommates of the suspect. all of them from the university of santa barbara. about 200 people attended the service to mourn, sing and pray. the priest said that he had received expressions of sympathy and support from parishes all over the country. local and federal law enforcement officers searched the home of the killer's parents today. agents carried out a box from the father's home in woodland hills but they would not comment about what they found. >> we have live team coverage now. ktvu's azmith smith is in the south bay where she spoke to friends of those killed. >> we begin in isle of vista

roommate or just visiting the apartment. azmith smith, ktvu news. one of the surviving victims is from alamo. this photo of nick pasacho giving a thumbs up sign. he told cnn police said he flew 50 feet. he added this is so crazy. >> and friends say they had not seen his you tube video. rogers convinced the deputies he was okay. roger's parents had alerted authorities their son had posted violent threats on you tube. congress is now starting to weigh in on the isle of vista massacre and how to prevent other shootings. >> i hope, i seriously support

is 38-year-old steven rutlidge. rutlidge broke both of his legs. after a sleepy driver slammed into him during a traffic stop. as ktvu's noelle roger tells us, the driver had just come from a casino. >> reporter: through traffic, backed up all day by a crash on 101 and todd road this morning. when the driver of this suv veered off the freeway and hit a chp cruiser stopped on the shoulder. >> the officer was looking inside at his computer screen when he was struck. >> reporter: hit with such force the back of the chp car accordon, barely recognizable, investigators spent hours collecting evidence and reconstructing the crash which happened just after the chp officer pulled over this man. >> i hear a big loud crash. >> reporter: the impact broke

the officers legs and catapulted him into his cruiser as it skidded. the man who was about to get a ticket was playing lifesaver. >> i had to think fast. i grabbed him. i started pulling him out. >> reporter: the witness said he heard the suv driver, rachel garres said she fell asleep at the wheel. >> i -- i think she came from the casino, late night, passing out. >> reporter: investigators don't believe alcohol was involved. that car was driving at highway speeds. all things considered this could have been a lot worse. >> all in all, you know, we don't feel lucky as a department right now, but we are. >> reporter: the law requires people to pull over when you

see an emergency vehicle pulled over. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. freemont police say they've identified a person of interest. family members found the body. the woman is married but her husband was not at home when they arrived. police would only say the person of interest is a man. police say the house is home to a number of extended family members but none of them reported hearing or seeing anything out of ordinary. >> they've been you know obviously grieving, as anybody would expect. but they've been nothing but cooperative with us. >> the coroner has not released the name of a 39-year-old woman and a cause of death has yet to be determined. it is every parent's worse nightmare. losing a child.

bay area police are continuing a weekend crack down on drivers under the influence. san francisco police tell ktvu news that they stopped more than 300 drivers last night at a checkpoint in the ingleside. santa clara authorities arrested 21 people friday night and last night. chp officers arrested 136 people in the area during that same period. two of those dui arrests were made in hayward. one driver crashed into a utility pole and fire hydrant. another hit a police car on the scene. christien kafton tells us the first driver may also face child endangerment charges.

>> california highway patrol says it all startedded at 12:45 this morning when a ford pickup truck veered off the road and left destruction in its path. >> for unknown reasons the pickup continued and collided into a telephone pole followed by a fire hydrant. >> reporter: no one was seriously injured in the crash. after a short investigation officered arrested the driver for driving under the influence. compounding the danger the woman and two children who had been in the truck. officers say the driver faces additional child endangerment charges. while the officers investigated that incident they say another drive cruising near the scene made a u turn that nearly clipped a police cruiser. they say that led to a second traffic stop. >> at that time that vehicle almost collided with our patrol cars. our units did make a stop on that vehicle which led to the driver of that vehicle being arrested for the suspicion of driving under the influence.

>> crews spent the day replacing utility poles and repairing the damage. the arrests they made out here were just two of 147 so far this memorial day weekend. unfortunately there's already been two fatal dui accidents. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 two news. that big improvement job is right on schedule. that's the word from caltrans as they continue to work on the seismic project. the work has closed down a two mile stretch this weekend. >> a lot of thought goes into determining when we're going to do these closures. we try to minimize the impact to the motoring public. >> reporter: caltrans notes the roadway is about 50 years old and is due for some new hinges. today crews poured concrete for a new hinged system which allows for expansion during an earthquake.

hundreds of people took to the streets of salinas today in a peaceful protest calling for respect, dignity and justice after two men were killed by police this month. >> today's demonstration included prayers and aztec dancers. it was in stark contrast to a protest earlier this week that turned violent. that protest followed this surveillance video. medilla went into a woman's yard, exposed himself and took a pair of clippers. >> he deserves justice, respect and dignity because that's the kind of person he was. everybody sees, hears what they say bad about him. >> reporter: on may 9, salinas police killed osmond hernandez

after he was reportedly chasing shoppers with a knife. police have defended their actions saying their actions felt threatened in both cases. it is all hands on deck for bay area law enforcement on the water this memorial day weekend. and today, we went along to see the step up approach to try to keep people safe. >> rivers, lakes, the ocean all looks great this time of year but the waters can be dangerous. cristina rendon joined deputies for an up close look for efforts to try to prevent tragedies this holiday weekend. >> reporter: with the proper gear -- >> we have a rule if you're on our boat you wear life jackets. >> reporter: ktvu boarded a board with the contra costa county patrol unit. educating as many people as possible about boat safety. >> it's a pretty well known

fact that the majority of people don't know the rules at all. >> you add alcohol to that mix and that's the bad decision making that create the fatalities. >> reporter: authorities will be out here all weekend to make sure everyone has life vests and a flotation device that's coast guard approved. the people in this stranded boat go through a safety inspection. >> it's very easy. just like driving a car. >> reporter: but unlike a car, you need safety. >> in this case there's no requirement to pass a test. just so you understand you're going to stop and technically you can get a ticket. >> reporter: the warnings will only last for so long before they start writing citations,

santa rosa 96 degrees. widespread 90s toward concord, fairfield, antioch and livermore. oakland not as warm but still nice. the cooler spots right near the immediate coastline. pacifica topped out 64 degrees. on the satellite we still have mostly clear skies. what a warmed us up more of a northernly breeze kicking in. here's an inspection of the satellite. we had relatively clear skies out there across the bay area. here's our forecast model. we'll put this into motion. if you can see coming up the fog increases over the next few hours and by 6:00 and 7:00. a fog bank approaching the coastline. we'll have an impact on the the temperatures. that's coming up right after 10:35. >> thank you, mark. you can follow mark and the rest of our ktvu weather team.

south bay democrats and long time state lawmaker varcancelos has died at the age of 82. after 30 years, he spent eight more years in the state senate. he was known as a visionary and advocate for the disadvantaged. jim beal of san jose released a statement saying that vascaneclo was the conscious of the legislature and a one of a kind politician. cascanselo died at his home yesterday. and a close call off the coast. how rescuers today helped bring these stranded kite sufferers back to shore. it's

police release video of the deadly moment a gunman opened fire at a jewish museum in brussels. a nationwide search is on for that shooter. security has been stepped up at jewish sites all over belgium. police say they believe the gunman acted alone and they are concerned he could strike again. pope francis made an unexpected entry into middle east politics today. he invited israeli and palestinian leaders to a prayer summit at the vatican and called for a two state solution to the ongoing conflict. this is the second day of the pope's three day trip to the middle east where he led mass in a crowded major square. he also made a surprise stop at the security barrier that separates bethlehem from jerusalem. there he got out of his car and

wants to give back to the community has been hiding money all over san francisco and is now planning to take the campaign nationwide. an anonymous person using the twitter handle of hidden cash has been leaving money inside envelopes in strange places then he tweets clues on how to find it. people who have found the cash have been posting pictures of it. according to the bold italic website this person claims to have made a lot of money in san francisco real estate and wants to share the wealth. hidden cash says on twitter that next weekend the game spreads out to los angeles. i love all of these money give away stories, remember the big tipper. yeah. all right. i wonder if it's the same person. could be. a bay area nonprofit offering support to parents as they say goodbye to their sick children. >> it's really sad, it's really traumatic but there's so much beauty too. >> the new help offered

a shooting in oakland left one man dead inside a home. the adult male was shot in an apartment this morning on nicolle avenue near fruitvale avenue. a group of people went back to that apartment after a night out. and at one point they started arguing and someone pulled out a gun. police say the people in that group then left, and they found the man in his late 20s dead there at the scene. there's no word tonight of any arrests. a sudden shift in the wind turned into a rescue effort for some kite boarders today.

the coast guard was called out to help the kite boarders. one kite boarder said the wind died then shifted offshore and when that happened everybody started drifting downwind. >> i was lucky enough and ended up? a beach downwind. but it was struggling. it's awesome to have the fire department out here helping everyone. >> this man says that he has never seen the need to get rescue crews out here. and that tippedly when wind shifts down you have time to land. and the george mark children's house is getting a big financial boost thanks to

the past few frames. that will approach our coastline over the next, over the next six to 12 hours out there. right now and basically all night long we had more of a northerly breeze. that really warmed us up for today but that will be changing for tomorrow. outside right now though it is warm out is there. take a look at these numbers 10:00, or 10:38 something like that, 73 degrees. and antioch still reporting 77. san jose checking in 62 degrees. for tonight we do have this mostly clear skies here is our live camera look and out toward the bay bridge out there and the winds really not too strong out there on the bay waters. for tomorrow for memorial day patchy morning fog. and temperatures near 90 degrees. break down that forecast for tomorrow. for the coast, that will probably be the biggest change for tomorrow. partly sunny skies.

sunny and warm in the 70s. and 87 to 90 degrees. but everybody cools off most areas cool off compared to today's highs. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning. lots of 50s out there. mostly clear skies. some patchy fog bumps up near the coast line. there's some cloud here to the north. we think of the hottest day of the weekend and the most significant cooling expected tuesday and wednesday. as the weather system moves in to the north for the time frame. once again showing you patchy frog regrouping just offshore. 7:00 tomorrow morning. and then into the afternoon hours a big temperature range we're thinking 60s for the beaches. lots of 80s in the warmest locations approaching 90 degrees by 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. still pretty warm numbers out toward santa rosa, fairfield and vacaville. san rafael 73 degrees.
