now at five developing news in the south bay. two police officers shot while responding to a call. the suspect also shot. we're live where the investigation is happening right now, and a much calmer night on college campuses across the country. >> after a violent week. we now know thousands have been arrested. president biden's message to protesters a group of uc alumni siding with pro-palestinian protesters, and they're using their checkbooks as collateral. >> the petition to withhold donations now circulating, and the new partnership with police bringing a cinco de mayo celebration back to the south bay. good morning. it is friday, may 3rd. >> we want to begin with a check of our weather. we know it's going to be a rainy weekend. >> yeah, a little bit on saturday. not the whole weekend, but today will still get that gorgeous sunshine. those warm temperatures, a live look outside the exploratorium camera this morning. we do have some

patchy fog out there. areas like half moon bay, even hayward reporting a little bit of cloud cover this morning. so we do have a shallow marine layer to begin the day. it's just an indication that we have cooler changes on the way. take a look at temperatures. right now we're basically in the 40s and low 50s out there as we start our day. so it's one of those mornings again, we have our typical chill. you'll need your jacket, but we'll warm up nicely this afternoon. here's a look at how your day shapes up. we have a little bit of cloud cover this morning, giving way to full sunshine throughout the day. it is a little bit of a cooler afternoon. yesterday was the peak of our warm spell. now we'll see temperatures gradually in the 50s along the coast 70s around the bay shoreline close to 80 inland. so it's a nice day today. a little bit of a breeze. it's dry today, but that will change as we head into the weekend. saturday morning it is a level one on the abc seven storm impact scale for rain. some brief downpours up to an inch of rain is possible, so we'll take a closer look at the timeline of the storm coming up in about eight minutes, guys. >> all right. thank you. drew,

as you're waking up this morning, we want to get you updated on a shooting that injured two police officers in the south bay last night. it went down on san ignacio avenue in san jose. santa teresa neighborhood. the suspect was also injured. abc seven news reporter lena howland is near where the shooting happened in south san jose. and lena, what's happening out there right now? >> well, amanda, we do know that two san jose police officers were shot while responding to a disturbance call here somewhere in the area off of san ignacio avenue and bernal road. now, if you take a look right behind me here, you can see there is still a police presence here in the lucky parking lot. we're also seeing several roads shut down in this area. now we know that san jose police say this all happened right around 1030 last night, just off of san ignacio avenue. while investigating a disturbance call. they say officers made contact with a male suspect who shot at them, hitting two officers. we're told the officers returned fire and the suspect was taken into

custody shortly after. the suspect and both officers were also taken to a nearby hospitals overnight. san jose police officers were seen waiting inside of the ambulance entrance at regional medical hospital with several patrol cars parked outside. at this point in time, it's still not clear what prompted the disturbance call in the first place, and we are still waiting to hear an update on the condition of both officers involved. keep in mind there are still multiple road closures in place at this hour. police are asking everyone to avoid this area again. this is around san ignacio avenue avenue and bernal road for now. reporting live in san jose. lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. this morning there is relative calm across the country. after a week of tense and sometimes violent protests on college campuses, police are still moving in on protesters less than two hours ago, nypd started moving in to clear out an encampment at nyu. the university requested that

assistance from the police department to break up what school officials are calling an illegal encampment. encampments at other universities are being dismantled after police arrived. gloria, we're learning that thousands of protesters have been arrested. >> reggie, last night was so different from what we saw unfolding earlier this week, including the scene yesterday morning at ucla, where 130 people were arrested after two nights of violent confrontations with police. and according to new data compiled by the associated press, more than 2100 people have been arrested in pro-palestinian demonstrations nationwide since april 18th. while last night was much more calm, protests are still happening across the country. police say that they detained a driver in portland who briefly accelerated toward some protesters at portland state. demonstrators there started to form encampments on that campus yesterday. the nypd now says at one of its officers accidentally

discharged their firearm during the takeover at columbia university on tuesday. nobody was hurt. the bullet hit a wall. the white house says. second gentleman doug emhoff spoke with jewish students and hillel leaders about the claims of anti-semitism that they're seeing at various universities. president biden addressed the protests at campuses around the country, expressing his support while also condemning those infringing on the rights of others. >> we are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent. the american people are heard. in fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition of how americans respond to consequential issues. but dissent must never lead to disorder or to denying the rights of others. so students can finish the semester and their college education. >> and the president also took the time yesterday to condemn islamophobia, anti-semitism, and discrimination against arab americans. amanda. >> all right. thanks so much,

gloria. and we're learning more about an incident at the pro-palestinian encampment at uc berkeley. we told you about this yesterday morning. a fight started wednesday evening after someone grabbed an israeli flag out of the hands of a counter-protester people at the encampment say no one knows the man who did it, and his actions do not reflect their intentions. >> we have a long and storied history in california of student protests and i support their right to protest. it's also so important for our college campuses to be safe places for everyone. >> members of the group, students supporting israel, say the man who had his flag stolen is named ilan. they released a statement saying the act forcefully pulled alon into the violent mob, where he was beaten by two men, punched in the back of the neck and in the face several times. the event was nothing short of terrifying and has definitely resulted in physical and mental distress. protesters say they don't plan to leave even when this semester

ends. next week. pressure is growing from alumni demanding the uc system divest from companies with ties to israel. many are vowing to withhold donations until uc leaders divest. this letter was sent to uc regents in january. it now has more than 5000 signatures from alumni, many people signing their support. just in the past week. they specifically want the uc system to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. >> we have weapons companies that are directly benefiting and profiting, lockheed martin, elbit, boeing, grumman, raytheon. >> the university of california says it won't divest from israel. the office of the president issued a statement saying, quote, the university of california has consistently opposed calls for boycott against the and divestment from israel. while the university affirms the right of our community members to express diverse viewpoints, a boycott of this sort impinges on the academic freedom of our students and faculty, and the unfettered

it's nice to see a lot of the stores that i see in some of the, the other events and. yeah, it's a good time. the food smells great. >> san franciscans need to remember that we are great at throwing a party and celebrating getting people back to downtown. >> district six supervisor matt dorsey believes the city is on its way to bringing the downtown back from the pandemic. >> hopefully, this is the kind of thing that makes people who are have the option of working from home and commuting want to come downtown, and that's good for our downtown businesses. >> even if people are coming downtown for work, they leave as soon as it's done, so it's fun to actually have something nearby for like all the coworkers or friends to meet up and enjoy time together. >> i have little slimline versions of them right here, and for business owners, it's a welcome sight. i mean, these events are great. i love seeing all the people coming out. i mean, they're expecting 10,000 people tonight. that's amazing. on a thursday, the packed street offering a glimpse of what could be, i like, be able to see the

energy and kind of the vision of like what it would look like if everyone did come back. san francisco, in my mind, is hope. san francisco's changed. and so, you know, we're going through a transition period. but all that means is that it's an opportunity for new stuff to bloom. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> i'm glad to see a lot of people showed up. that is great. and the weather was great. there are at least two more night markets coming up. bhangra and beats takes over downtown at battery street and clay street. that is next friday, may 10th. there are additional dates at that location in the fall, and the city is also planning another sunset night market, which was super popular. that's going to be held this summer. and that is not all. before last night's first thursday event, more than 200 employees from five of san francisco's biggest companies downtown helped volunteers to clean up nearby streets. several months ago. executives from gap, levi's, visa, wells fargo and chase formed a coalition to revitalize the city, and now they're seeing their work in action. >> this is our home, and people take care of their homes. and so we want to ensure that the

neighborhoods that our employees are living and working in, the places where people are coming to visiting, are, are gleaming. >> with all that said, we are still seeing the city struggle to get workers to return downtown. according to early data from real estate brokerage cbre, the city's office vacancy rate recently set a record high at more than 36. >> 511 the accuweather forecast, showing you we get one more really nice day around here with lots of sunshine before rain returns for the weekend. high pressure is still in control right now, but you can see off to our north and west. this is a cold front that's going to sink south early tomorrow morning and bring some rain back into the forecast, but today, no issues with wet weather will break it down by the region's coast. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures in the 50s around the bay shoreline a little cooler than yesterday, upper 60s to lower 70s and inland will stay in the 70s for daytime highs. any friday night plans you'll notice clear skies

early on, giving way to cloud cover, building in ahead of that front. but all day today and all night tonight, we do remain dry, so no threat of wet weather. it's tomorrow morning. we do bring in the abc seven storm impact scale. it's a level one in the morning for rain. briefly heavy at times in the morning. will create some slick roads. the winds pick up a bit with the frontal passage and rainfall for most anywhere from a half of an inch to an inch for most areas. and on average, that's how much rain we typically see for the entire month. so we'll likely see a month's worth of may rain out of this one storm. let's take a look at the timeline. this is saturday and you can see there's this period between about 6 a.m. and noon where those rain chances are really elevated after about noon, those rain chances really drop off and we'll actually see the sunshine come back out tomorrow afternoon. and a dry back half of the weekend. we'll talk much more about the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you drew. $1 billion artificial intelligence company is leaving san francisco still

to help find the people who robbed a postal worker in oakland. this is the latest in a concerning trend of postal worker robberies in the bay area. so this went down yesterday afternoon. you can see the postal worker exiting a building on euclid avenue in the adams point neighborhood. that's when a person appears and robs the worker. wow. post office officials say at least two people were involved in this robbery. and so far, no one's been arrested. new developments on the fire that destroyed the ultra popular horn barbecue in oakland. investigators say they

are treating this case as an arson. the fire department believes evidence found at the scene indicates the fire was intentionally set. they say the investigation is ongoing, as is the search for suspects. the barbecue spot on mandela parkway closed after the fire in november last week, horn's owners reopened in a shared space with their other restaurant on eighth street. >> and if you're looking forward to celebrating cinco de mayo this weekend, san jose could be your spot to do it. there will be two parades and a big community festival. the city is getting ready for this year's celebrations, and there will be at least one big change. last year, police closed streets and freeway exits, making it very hard to get to celebrations, especially the lowrider parade. many called the move racist and discriminatory. this year, however, in an effort to mend fences, spd will participate in the parade. this is the second year for the parade since the city lifted a ban on cruising before the ban. >> after the ban, we've always wanted people to come down here, but to celebrate and do so

safely, so as we've seen in years past, we've had an increase in sideshow activity in some of our parking lots and some of our streets. and as we have in years past, we will employ a zero tolerance on any type of criminal behavior. we will have additional resources out on the streets. >> there will still be some road closures for safety reasons, but this year, police will focus enforcement on alcohol related incidents. the cinco de mayo parade gets underway at 9 a.m. sunday, starting at city hall. the lowrider parade starts at ten along king road and the big festival is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at plaza de cesar chavez, san jose state engineering students are showing off cars they created from scratch. >> spark racing creates brand new, fully electric formula c and baja style vehicles, with the goal of competing against other universities from organize the organizing the program. welding, driving, racing. the entire thing is 100% student run. >> it's unlike anything else you get to do in college, and that's kind of the value of c and baja and formula like is you're

weird street fair is being postponed because of the rain expected this weekend. the annual event that includes music, costumes and characters was scheduled to happen tomorrow. the theme would have been star weird day. may the 4th be with you because tomorrow is may 4th. according to the how weird eventbrite listing, people are entitled to a refund if the event is postponed. organizers have not announced what the refund process will look like, and if you had plans to go to richmond and san pablo popular cinco de mayo event this weekend, that event is being postponed to the cinco de mayo peace and unity parade is being pushed back until september because of the rain. tomorrow >> i feel like we feel like everybody being like, really? but the thing is, if you have plans, if you can push them to sunday, you'll be totally fine. it's just a small portion of our weekend. we will be dealing with rain, but it will be briefly heavy at times tomorrow morning. here's a live look from our san jose camera. the accuweather headlines today. beautiful, sunny above average. with those

temperatures. it's saturday morning that wet, windy and colder weather moves in here, but it is a fast moving front. sunday. the sunshine is back, dry skies prevail and it will be a nice end to the weekend. here's a look at today's forecast as we go inland, we'll see a lot of sunshine temperatures in the 70s around the bay shoreline. a bit cooler today compared to yesterday, upper 60s to the lower 70s, and along the coast will be in and out of the clouds today with temperatures in the 50s overnight. tonight after midnight, we'll start to see some rain move into the north bay. temperatures are chilly in the 30s and 40s as that cold front approaches on the storm impact scale saturday morning. it is a level one light storm for rain. brief downpours at times. so here's future weather as we go hour by hour. saturday morning, 530 you can see the rain is focused first in the north bay. by about 8:09 a.m. we have this line of heavier showers. that's the bright yellow and orange you see on your screen. moving through parts of the north bay, the

city, the east bay approaching the south bay. by noon, much of the rain is focused in the south bay, but we're beginning to see the back edge of the steadier rain exiting the north bay. and as we head into the afternoon on saturday, sunshine does break out. the steady rain moves out and that will lead to a bright sunday. look at sunday. the clouds get ripped apart. we turn dry for the second half of the weekend, but we will see a decent amount of rain for a may storm. rainfall totals between half of an inch and an inch of rain coming our way tomorrow morning. snow is coming to the sierra as well. we have a winter weather advisory in effect. there we could see up to a foot of snow tomorrow through early sunday. so the weekend preview saturday is wet, sunday is dry both days though temperatures are below average. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. warm today, wet tomorrow, dry on sunday and then next week we a big time warming trend above average by thursday, widespread 70s and 80s around the region. guys all right. >> looking forward to it. thanks, joe. >> coming up, the seven things

>> hey, reggie. that's right. just about 20 minutes ago, san jose police posted an update confirming that one of the two officers that was shot while responding to a disturbance call here last night has already been treated and released from the hospital. police say the second officer injured in this shooting is still in the hospital this morning, with life threatening injuries. we're told he is still considered to be in critical condition this morning, according to san jose police, officers were responding to a disturbance call in this neighborhood off of san ignacio avenue and bernal road right around 1030 last night. while investigating that call, they say officers made contact with a male suspect who shot at them, hitting two officers. we're told that's when the officers returned fire and the suspect was taken into custody shortly after, the suspect and both officers were taken in nearby hospitals overnight, san jose police officers were seen waiting inside of the ambulance

are now being replicated on college campuses overseas, including here in sydney, australia. >> i wish, solidarity to all of the fellow student activists who've been involved in this fight world over. >> back here at home, police in new york say nearly 300 people were arrested at columbia and city college. half of them were not affiliated with the schools. perry russom, abc news, washington an update from usc this morning about graduation plans after the university canceled its main stage commencement ceremony because of protests. >> gloria, they're now doing something called a graduation celebration on. >> yes, reggie. that's what usc is calling it. the university announced it will now host a trojan family graduate celebration. it's happening next week at the la coliseum. but not all students may be able to attend usc also sent out an email last night warning student protesters. it says those who have been arrested for criminal trespassing would be referred to the university's disciplinary process, which could result in expulsion. usc's commencement

around the bay shoreline. we'll find those numbers in the upper 60s. so a little bit cooler today compared to yesterday, but still a pleasant afternoon and then along the coast we'll be in and out of the cloud cover today , a little breezy. those temperatures in the upper 50s for daytime highs. then we bring in the storm impact scale. and it's a level one here that we're focusing on tomorrow morning. that's when the bulk of the rain is going to come. we'll have some brief downpours at times. the biggest impact is going to be some slick roads. the winds will be gusty at times, and rainfall between half of an inch and an inch, and that's typically how much rain we see over the entire month. so this is a pretty decent storm when we're talking about may cold fronts. here's a look at the rain chances tomorrow. we're focusing on the six hour window between 6 a.m. and noon. that is when your rain chances are elevated. that is, when the front moves through. behind that front, the rain chances really dip off in the afternoon, but sunday is looking spectacular. we'll take a full look at the
