san francisco is hoping to inject new life into the city. could the key be hiding in the nightlife? good evening. i'm ama daetz mayor, london breed says the number of venues opening is on the rise, but bar owners tell us there are still major struggles. abc seven news reporter j.r stone went out to hear more about the new push to turn up the nighttime options. jr well, there is excitement over business openings ummah. >> but the concern is this a bar owner told me the people just aren't there yet, referring to those in the city. they have to be enticed to come back and experience the city a musician like this chris klaus at san francisco's white rabbit. you could see the crowd will often come new bars like zhuzh near california and polk, is one of nearly 150 new businesses that opened in march in san francisco. >> we believe in the city, and we know that things are going to

turn around, and we have faith that this is one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. >> in fact, the city of san francisco is cutting some of the red tape. bar owners tell me city leaders have yanked five grand entertainment license fees for new businesses in their first year, and made those easier to get by rezoning certain areas from residential to commercial, meaning djs at those venues can now play until 2 a.m. instead of 11 p.m. >> as of this week, we have dj seven nights a week and enticing people to come to the city or go to venues like this is what was talked about monday at the sf nightlife and entertainment summit. >> travel experts saying that people are now coming to san francisco because they want to come, not because they have to come. juges aaron paul says sales have been down 30 to 50% at his other establishment, and bar owner friends of his are feeling it even worse. but he's still optimistic. like city officials, i truly believe that nightlife will actually be the

engine that that brings our city uh- back. >> i think it will be the main engine. >> the comptroller's office recently reported a jump in new restaurants and bars opening in our city, with 99 new businesses opening in february and 147 new businesses opening in march. >> san francisco's comeback is underway, and it is entertainment and culturally powered. >> you watch fox news and like there, like they show people shooting up in the tenderloin and you're like, you know, that does happen. but that's not our whole city. it's actually pretty. it's still beautiful. and there's a lot of us living here that love it and get some positive vibes back night markets offering food, fun and drinks have become very popular in different neighborhoods of san francisco. >> the east cut neighborhood here in the city is set to have their night market this thursday, may 2nd, from 5 to 10 p.m. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> all right, j.r, thank you so

much. pro-palestinian protests are still developing on college campuses across the country tonight. police in virginia are using riot shields and pepper spray as they move in on a new encampment. and we're watching another tense police standoff unfold right now at the university of utah. in the last hour, officers ordered the crowd there to disperse. that protest formed this morning, and now the university says students aren't allowed to camp overnight on campus. the protest at virginia commonwealth university in richmond also started this morning. and tonight, officers are tearing it down. the university says the protest was violent and violated policies, with final exams about to begin at new york's columbia university, the student newspaper reports. protesters are now barricading inside an academic building. the university started suspending students who refused to leave their outdoor encampment by the university's deadline, and cornell university is also suspending students who refuse to move their protest to another location. >> these repulsive scare tactics

mean nothing compared to the deaths of over 34,000 palestinians, protesters are demanding their universities divest from weapons manufacturing companies and other businesses that support israel. >> many are also calling for a permanent cease fire in the israel-hamas war. u.s. officials are asking for even a temporary pause in the fighting. >> the only thing standing between the people of gaza and a cease fire is hamas. >> us secretary of state antony blinken says israel's latest proposal for a temporary cease fire to release hamas hostages is generous. but blinken says israel still must do more to get more humanitarian aid into gaza. demonstrations on bay area college campuses have remained relatively peaceful thus far, and new encampments are being set up by the day. since the cancellation of the valedictorian speech at usc, more than a dozen prominent universities in california have seen pro-palestinian encampments set up on campus. abc seven news

south bay reporter lauren martinez is following the latest with these movements in the bay area. lauren >> ummat. just today, students at san francisco state and sac state launched their own pro-palestinian encampments. and while demonstrations on northern california campuses have been calm, certain signs and words at these demonstrations have raised some concern. students at san francisco state are the latest to join pro-palestinian demonstrations in encampment went up monday at sonoma state. tents went up on campus friday and rallies were held throughout the weekend. protesters tell us their calls to action are not meant to make jewish students feel unsafe. a lot of us here are working class students, and we're realizing that this is a time for using institutional power to help those who can't, who don't have a voice. on monday, sonoma state president mike lee released a statement

addressing that while the demonstrations have been peaceful, there are signs of anti-semitism. unfortunately, some of the messages written in chalk on the sidewalk in front of the encampment are disturbing. they're anti-semitic wording has no place at sonoma state or anywhere else. respect and tolerance are practiced. therefore, those messages will be removed. >> we're expecting a lot these days on our campuses where we're more seen as businesses than as entities to teach, professor of communication at cal state east bay lonnie brooks would like to see these protests be sites of more shared dialog, because i think that the encampments kind of play into a polarization often of our opinions. i think there's an opportunity here to bring dialog among both sides, rather than who can uh- out, noise. the other at stanford university, their encampment heads into their fifth night on monday. >> larry diamond, director of

the center on democracy, moderated a forum with speaker doctor salam fayyad, former prime minister of the palestinian authority. >> problem is, sometimes people get fixated over one element of something and to the to, to, to the extent of saying, you know, if this is true, then everything else must be must be false. and that's where you really get into difficulty. >> fayyad answered questions on the nationwide campus protest and the history of conflict. israel and palestine share more difficult to settle conflicts you know there than it is elsewhere, for sure. >> not impossible. >> and tonight, the san francisco police officers association said officers have been heading up to cal poly humboldt to help csu police ensure everyone's safety during these demonstrations. the campus newspaper there reports. police arrived at the encampment around ten tonight warning of unlawful assembly. live in san jose lauren martinez, abc seven news.

believe it or not, we are talking about the possibility of rain for the first weekend of may. i'll be back with a closer look as to why it's not a done deal yet. ama all right, we'll check back. >> thank you. sandhya, now to your voice. your vote. robert f kennedy junior says he's qualified for the ballot in california. the campaign filed paperwork with the secretary of state today, but the petition signatures will still need to be verified. and kennedy's running mate is nicole shanahan, a bay area lawyer from the tech industry. their ticket is backed by the american independent party. governor newsom will visit the vatican in a few weeks to talk about the fight against climate change. the governor is expected to address the pope and other world leaders at a conference. climate change was also a focus of the governor's visit to china last october. his trip ended with an agreement that california and china would work together to cut greenhouse gas emissions. governor newsom's predecessor also made a climate focused trip to the vatican back

in 2017. then governor jerry brown gave a scathing speech on the trump administration's climate policies. the news of governor newsom's visit comes just a few days after a big boost for electric vehicles. in our state, he says. there's now one ev fast charging station for every five gas stations in california. it helps that evs made by ford and rivian can now also use tesla chargers. there are more than 100,000 public chargers across california, but the state's energy commission estimates we will need 2 million ev chargers chargers rather, by 2035. the oakland school for the arts hosted its first annual artist impact awards, celebrating local creatives, a big nod to the netflix show euphoria. oakland native zendaya was one of the recipients, though she couldn't make it tonight. and then they awarded the late angus cloud and asylum, along with zendaya, cloud's mother was there to accept on his behalf. >> honor loved his town, he

charlotte, north carolina tonight. a fourth officer has now died from his injuries. hours ago, the president gave his condolences to those impacted. this afternoon, a task force of u.s. marshals was attempting to serve two warrants. when police say a man opened fire from inside a home, schools were put on lockdown. helicopters circled above, and swat teams surrounded the house. a officers were hit, shots fired, an officer possibly one down. >> correction two down. subjects barricaded himself. >> we were at the track and we could hear a lot of gunshots. >> they used one of our bedrooms, set up a us marshal sniper in just to get a point. >> investigators say the man eventually came out of his home armed with a gun. police shot and killed him. two others inside the house were taken in for questioning. a medical device company will pay more than $1 billion to settle lawsuits over defective sleep apnea machines. philips has recalled more than 5 million of its cpap machines over the last three years. it's one of the

biggest medical device, recalls ever. the foam inside them can break down, causing users to inhale fumes and tiny particles as they sleep. philips hasn't admitted any fault. the company also reached a deal with the us government earlier this month to change how it builds the breathing machines in the future . in the east bay, a baby bandit is wanted for the theft of a hive of honey bees. on saturday, a thief swiped a colony kept by an urban beekeeper in oakland's rockridge neighborhood. it happened when she went inside her house for a moment during a public honey tasting. she was hosting someone stole a colony with more than 15,000 live honey bees and their queen. >> i lost a colony and it was very heartbreaking to see the children that day coming to check out the bees and they didn't get to do that. they they learned about theft. >> beekeeper susan donahue says the bees are probably dying because whoever took the hive wasn't a beekeeper. she feels

certain this urban bee heist was a drive by crime of opportunity. it's a close call for a hugely popular competition in pacifica. the annual dog surfing championship will be coming back again this august, but tonight we're learning it was very nearly wiped out. abc seven news reporter tim johns is following the story of the rough surf and the community push to keep the event going strong. >> over the past eight years, the annual dog surfing competition in pacifica has become a favorite event for people around the world. scheduled to take place in summer this year was almost called off after organizers say the spiraling cost of doing business in the bay area saw their expenses rise more than 100% in recent years. >> some of the costs are permitting fees. some of the costs are for additional expenses that we are required to do, like porta potties, for example, and dumpsters. >> as a.k. crump works with taste tv, the company that puts

the competition on, he says in order to offset some of those costs, the organization created a gofundme. it's been so successful that crump says the contest has been saved. welcome news to many, including santa cruz resident steve trotter and his dog rosie. >> rosie started surfing at about eight months old, first when she was seven. she started out on a stand up paddle board and then after that we went to surf some little small waves in santa cruz. and then we've just been surfing ever since. >> rosie has participated in the event for the last two years, and steve says he was upset when he heard it might have been canceled. >> it's a neat chance to for people to see what you can do with the dog, what the dogs capable of and the bond that people have that surf with their dog. it's really amazing. >> beyond the good feelings, steve says the competition also supports good causes. each dog competing comes with an entrance fee, all of which supports local animal charities and experience. steve believes benefits everyone involved. >> there's a lot of camaraderie.

the biggest thing you're going to notice is once again, the winds will be ramping up. it is going to be strongest not in the morning, but it will be gusty along the coastline in the morning. winds pick up over 40 miles an hour for the afternoon and that windy pattern stays with us, but inland areas are breezy. it's not terribly windy there. noontime wednesday the wind starts to pick up around solano county and it will remain breezy going into the following day, so just keep that in mind if you have any loose furniture around in the backyard, you might want to tie it down 30 to 50 on your temperatures. windy coast side clear start tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at upper 50s to the mid 70s. pretty nice looking day in terms of brightness. now here we're going to fast forward to the weekend. the gfs model is really bringing in a strong trough with widespread wet weather sierra snow. i mean this is just crazy for early may. and then we look at the european model and it's not quite as wet. let's just say it's actually causing this trough to break down a bit. and so we're not seeing as much
